A fledgling has disappeared from his parents nest, and naturally they are very distraught about it. The two Deep Woods Sentinels, a teacher and a crafter, demands an investigation of the disappearance and seems to expect elite involvement. To avoid making more fuss than needed the sergeant overseeing this particular area is going to send a small team to see if they can find anything.

---

"Best case scenario the chick is just hiding," he said during the briefing, obviously not thinking too highly of the parents, "But falling out of the nest, or trying to fly and crashing to the ground are also possibilities to consider. That's why you are here Falchior."

The mist Sergeant surveyed the two Sentinels and seemed pleased with what he saw. It took a mist to do the job right, and this lad looked just about right for the task at hand.

"Pinewood is in charge of course," he said, nodding towards the Wildtype Private, "Check the surroundings and any leads the parents might have. Dismissed."

Specific details: The Herald will play the NPC Private and the parents. You can assume that Pinewood and Falchior are closing in on the parent's territory when the RP starts. Depending on how it plays out there is a risk of injury in this scenario.

If a Sentinel could get... used... to the ground, Falchior supposed he was. At least in his own territory, where he lived and worked. But what he'd be facing today was strange ground, and he couldn't begin to stress to himself the importance of the utmost in caution. After all, his job was gathering mushrooms, not wayward fledglings. He felt bad for the missing child, he really did, even though he knew he should probably be angry that the fledgling was taking up the elites' time like this... or rather, the fledgling's mother and father. Honestly, Falchior would rather face the ground than angry, nervous parents. He knew a thing or two about just how overprotective and yet inattentive parents could be, and privately agreed with the Sergeant who'd assigned them this case. Hopefully, the fledgling was hiding, maybe to get his parents' attention for some reason or other. But whatever had happened, they'd be understandably upset, and an upset mother was a dangerous lady. And what was he? Just a big Mist gatherer with a large lizard. They wouldn't like it if he proposed that their darling child was hiding from them, no siree. And if he was on the ground...

Falchior really didn't want to think about that. Being that the ground was his primary workplace, he was quite familiar with all manner of nasty things that lived down there. Sentinels were made for the air and trees, not for the turf, and the ground-dwelling beasts were well aware of that. Now, more than ever, was he thankful for Ro. He could feel the Waral shifting in his otherwise empty pack, and he flexed his muscles, trying to nudge his companion. The lizard would be very nice to have while on strange ground; an extra pair of eyes would be a gift from Noctus, and the reptile's hairtrigger bite and ability to cause some serious hurt when threatened would be useful if, gods forbid, anything should happen down there.

But he had an Elite with him, and Private Pinewood was well-trained for this sort of situation, and everything would turn out for the best. They'd find the little Deep Woods, and he'd be returned to the loving bosom of his family. Just keep telling yourself that, Falc. Don't wanna choke up. Not in front of an Elite. Focus on finding and promise yourself what you'll find will be a-ok, right as can be. And... get the one with the chevrons to talk to the parents. As they began their descent into the territory, he looked edgeways at the Elite, attempting to focus on flight and on his request. "Pinewood, sir," he said, tension in his voice, "will you ask the questions? You're the Elite, and they'll respect you right away. And... they'll be really upset. I mean, if they're anything like my parents were, this is going to be traumatic for them, to say the least." Was he babbling? He wasn't sure. "I think an official talking to them might make things... slightly better." If it was his child who was lost, he'd probably rather talk to an Elite, after all. Elites got things done, after all. Not Gatherers.

Pinewood didn't seem very phased by the situation at all, and if he noticed any nervous vibes from Falchior he was kind enough not to comment on it. He turned his head slightly toward the Gatherer as they flew, listening without interrupting.

"First time, huh?" Pinewood asked with a hint of a smile on his beak when Falchior was done, "No worries, I'll talk to them and then we'll take it from there."

And with that he announced their presence with a very official sounding hoot that was soon answered by a hoot from the centre of the territory. They were welcomed to enter, obviously, but it was clear that the one answering was not in the best of moods. It didn't look much better when they landed in the tree where the parents perched. The female looked agitated and downright angry and her mate just wasn't much better off even if he looked more worried than angry.

"Took you long enough," she greeted them impatiently. "Wildwood has been gone since early tonight. Tell them about that nasty character, Hickory. He might have taken her!"

"Pleased to meet you Ma'am," Pinewood said, interrupting the rant as kindly as he could, "And you too Sir. I'm Pinewood and this is my colleague Falchior."

"The elites are here now, dear," the male said, sleeking down more the more his mate puffed up in anger, "They'll handle it. It's good to see you Pinewood and Falchior. I'm Hickory and this is my mate Truffle."

"I'm sorry we had to meet you under these conditions, sir, ma'am," Falchior said with a bob of his head as he assessed the situation. He almost had to stifle a laugh; Truffle reminded him very much of his own mother, though he supposed all mothers were protective of their chicks. But perhaps this was a good omen; after all, his life's work involved finding truffles, and maybe he'd have luck finding a truffle's offspring. As he stepped back, a thought flickered through his mind.

Hickory. I've never heard of him, but I'm not in this part of the forest often. It seems odd that a sentinel would kidnap a fledgling, though. Why would anybody do that? And it would be incredibly difficult; fledglings are living things, not dead like a squirrel, and they're pretty heavy. It would be hard to pick one up and smuggle it out of its parents' territory without anybody hearing. Unless the parents were gone someplace...

However, he kept his concerns to himself. If he'd thought of it, the elite certainly would have, and would ask the questions with much more tact than he could be trusted to use. As the elite began talking to the couple, Falchior looked down and attempted to see the ground. What little could be seen through the trees looked fairly normal; dropped feathers, bits of tiny animal bone, some decent-quality fungal growth, a large patch of lichen that looked usable... nothing to indicate that a fledgling had fallen this way. Of course, further investigation would be needed; this was just one patch. But this was the patch nearest the nest, so it was probably unlikely that the fledgling had actually taken a tumble here. Perhaps he'd been trying to fly, and fell a bit further? The parents' insight would probably be the most helpful indication of where to look... and what to look for.

Pinewood kept a professional smile on his beak but he kept tapping his perch with his talons while he listened. Thoughtfully or impatiently? It was hard to know what went on in his head while he listened to the worried parents.

"Well," Hickory started, giving his mate a sidelong glace, "There was this Minder named Moonstone, and we felt he didn't quite fulfil the needs of our daughter."

Truffle nodded as her mate spoke, but she seemed to be too impatient to let him finish before butting in again, and from the looks of it Hickory was used to this behaviour.

"That nasty piece of work was not good enough and I told him as much," Truffle interrupted, "We're not taking her back to that enclave as long as he is there."

Hickory fluffed his feathers in a way that could only be described as nervous and preened an errant feather on his mates shoulder to calm her down.

"Erm, yes," he continued, "We had a bit of an argument and we believe he might have kidnapped her."

"He can't have had a pure lineage either," Truffle muttered to herself. "They just don't understand the old families. We should have just found someone responsible to come and watch her here."

"I see, I see," Pinewood said and kept tapping his talons, "We will look into this, but first my colleague will check the surroundings for any clues. Meanwhile we can chat a bit about when and where you last saw your daughter and any other leads you can think of. Anything at all. We will keep all possibilities open."

Pinewood met Falchior's gaze and nodded towards the ground. While he hadn't openly disagreed with the parents it looked as if he wanted the gatherer to go along with the plan they had discussed with the Sergeant earlier. To look around below and see if there were any signs of a fledgling, or a crash landing.

OOC instructions: Roll a 6 sided dice in your next post, the Herald will let you know if you find anything and what you find (via PM or in the next post). If you want to you can roll first and edit in your response when you know what you find. It's up to you how you want to do it. You will probably make at least a few searches/rolls.
