The den was empty for now, as everyone was off doing their duties, or off playing under the watchful eye of another Shepard. And that left Codail sitting there, smiling sadly. Her little ones were all grown now...and hey would all be choosing dens of their own. Hopefully nearby. She wanted her family to always be close. She wasn't sure she could stand to have it be anything but. She would always see them as her babies...but another part of her knew they were adults now, and she would have to let go of them, give them room to spread their wings.
She sighed and placed a paw on an old painting in the cave and smiled. Well...it was old and new. Because lined up near her knee-level were old berry-juice pawprints, courtesy of her little ones and her sister's first litter. And below them, in fresh new juice, were the pawprints of her latest nieces and nephews. She carefully ran her paw over the prints she knew belonged to her own...had it really been so long ago that their paws were so small? It was just yesterday to her...

User ImageCaide was coming home from a long sift of border watching. Lately, he'd been coming to this den later and later because he worked, then went to see Chache. When he did come home, it was late at night and everyone was usually asleep. Today, however, Chache was busy, so he came straight home to relax and soak up the silence. He didn't even remember if he told his mother about Chache, but he was going to if she asked.

Poking his head in the cave, he smiled when he saw his mother and shuffled in behind er, being quiet, wanting to do noting more tan to sneak up behind her and rested his big head on his mother's own. "Why are you all alone in the den? Where's Dagda?"

Codail started a bit, but calmed quickly. "Well...a surprise to see you home so early, dearheart." She smiled. "He's off doing his duties, as you were. Everyone else...is other places. On shift, or playing under another Shepard's eyes..." She took her paw off the wall of the den. "I had some time to myself, so...I thought I might reminisce." She turned to nuzzle her son's neck. "You've all gotten so big. You've even outstripped me!" And she was no small lioness.
"So...not visiting your lady tonight?" She smiled knowingly. There had to be a lady in his life, for him to usually come home so late, and be so...well, happy. She wasn't sure she'd ever seen her son so happy with life. Of course...she hadn't MET said lady yet. She wanted to though.

When his mother mentioned his lady friend, the boy couldn't keep the happy grin off of his face. "She's busy. Keeping eye on three of our cousins," he said with a firm nod. Carefully he nuzzled back into her neck and licked the tips of her ears before flopping on the floor. "Mmn... I've got something to talk to you about. Chache is her name.. and we're thinking about... getting our own den. Starting a family. Of course, you'd meet her. But...I'd have to talk for her. She's deaf and ....we found a way of communicating."

"Ah~ Nice to know she's already met some of the family then!" She laid down across from Caide, with a little more dignity. "That's a cute name. And I was expecting something like this soon." She chuckled. "You've all grown...so I can't very well expect you to stay in this den forever." She blinked at the fact Chache was deaf. Well now...someone who balanced out her curious son rather well! "I don't mind, I'll still love meeting her. That you talk for her...I think is a sweet thing. It just proves your bond is deep."

The goofy grin was back as his mother seemed excited to meet his Chache. Maybe this would go a lot better than he planned, just so long as everyone wasn't trying to meet her all at once. Chuckling to himself, Caide rested against her and gave a deep, rumbling purr, one that would probably vibrate her just a bit.

"So...... I might be the first to make you a grandmother," he said casually, wondering how she'd take that. He'd learned how to make his inquisitiveness less known. You say things instead of asking questions now. Unless you had to ask, that's what he usually did.

A....grandmother? Codail purred back at her son, more than happy. "If that happens, I'll certainly have no objections!" Ooooh! Grandcubs! She was starting to get on in her years, and the thought of little grandcubs...it was a comforting, exciting one, rather than something to dread like many her age did. Thoughts of little ones curled around her on a cold night to listen to Grandma's tales of the world outside and the things she'd seen...
It brought a smile to her that was anything but sad or depressed or self-pitying. A grandma!

It was a comfort to know that his mother didn't dread getting old like most females did. The purr made him chuckle and yawn widely, his own purr never stopping. Caide's tangerine eyes focusesd on his mother for a moment and smiled. "You'll be having more babies yourself, won't you? Aunt did. Most of the time you two do everything together. Even had cubs together, didn't you?" He cocked his head to the side at thought.

When Caide first met his aunt and her horde, he didn't know what to think about all of them! His family sure did have a lot of males, he noticed. But his oldest female cousin was just like a boy in a lot of ways. The thought of her made Caide laugh out loud and shake his head. "Pretty soon, there won't be enough room in our pride for all of your line, mom."

Codail blinked...then nodded. "Yes. I think...I would like more cubs." And...there was a high chance she would have them. It was just a matter of time. "My cubs will be a little younger than your aunts though. I...have a father in mind, but he's very much a gentleman." Dagda was a sweetheart...but sometimes he was too gentle and slow with his courting. She would need to prod him a bit.

Codail chuckled. "Ah...we are a large, large family. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I love each and every member of it. Even your uncle's odd 'brother'."

Of course Caide knew who his mother was talking about; it wasn't hard to figure out since she was with Dagda. He nodded at that and pondered something. How many more siblings could he have? He already had quite a few, and enough cousins to last him a life time, but siblings? Maybe they'd get lucky and have more girls.

"Maybe one day, he'll take the initiative, mom. But be patient, hm? Isn't that what you taught me?"

The seer nodded. "Yes. I'll be patient with him. But...I do need to remind him that I've healed from my past losses." She looked to the little pawprints on the den wall again. "Perhaps...when you have little ones, we can add their pawprints alongside you and your cousins'?"

Caide nodded a bit and chuckled, stretching out happily. He moved over to the little paw prints and put his big paw on one of the prints that was probably not his. "Mom, how could I ever have been that small?" Caide asked with a grin and a wink. With his current size, it was a wonder!

Codail couldn't help but laugh merrily. "Oh...once upon a time, SOOOO long ago, you were even SMALLER than that." She grinned and nudged her son's shoulder with her nose. "Why...You were barely bigger than my paw, oh great Ghost." What sort of mother would she be if she didn't tease her son a little?

This lion knew when he was being teased. Laughing a bit more, he smirked and bumped up against her before heading out of the den. "Ok, old lady. You need your rest, don't you?" He said, laughter in his voice. It had gotten deep and rough sounding, but smooth. Like silk on sandpaper. "I'm going to do one more round before I call it a night. I love you, mom."
