Ebony Shade.

Alex turned her eyes over the sheet of paper left for her on the desk. Pulling her long hair into a loose knot, she tapped her scarred fingers over the name with a little frown on her lips. There was no way someone could have that name - twice. "So she is real," the Italian murmured with a vaguely awed tone, "and she's a Guardian." It looked like she was going to have her chance to meet-and-greet after all! Granted, she still felt bad for not having shared greetings or thanked her for the party before, but...better late than never?

Slipping her small hoodie off her bare shoulders - even the cool weather hadn't weaseled her out of her tank tops yet - she picked up a pen and began to fill out Ebony's paperwork. Alex had found, in her limited experience, that getting the paperwork done ahead of time generally didn't hurt when the gawking over Raevans began.

Newborns always excited the demon. This one was born in the same month as him, so it - correction, she, Alex had said - was already earning brownie points in his book. His blue eyes were lit with an inner fire that the hallway lights couldn't have possibly provided, a gleeful grin displaying his perfect white teeth and slightly sharpened canines against tan skin. If he thought about it, he might have found it odd that people always found that grin, set beneath an inverted pentagram, to be so inviting. Then again, the Raevan always found people odd, so perhaps it wouldn't ever come to light.

Zul floated in front of the door, knocking before letting himself in. As usual, the demon kept his back turned to allow the new Raevan time to see him and his movements, bone framed wings flapping in idle excitement as he closed the door behind himself. A gloved hand remained on the handle and lever, and schooling his grin into something more friendly and curious, he turned to see his momentary companion.

From her claimed spot in the back of the room, steely gray orbs had watched the Baphomet the entire time he'd slowly entered, measuring him for whether he posed a threat or not. Since her emergence, the black clad newborn hadn't been too happy about where she was. Nothing was familiar at all and the area was too cold for her liking, making her sluggish and tired which only added to her sour perception of this place. She had wanted to leave, but found her path blocked by others of whom were also unfamiliar. This one though...he was like her if only for the likeness of the trailing ribbon for a bottom half. Like his eyes, the rest of him held this air of sharp coldness, but beyond it the female felt something akin to a memory, something warm and comforting. That part is what drew her closer to him then. Cautiously, she swayed towards the other.

And just as the Serpent was working slow, Ebony found herself dragging her feet as she approached the laboratory. She'd done everything she could think of to delay her return here after receiving the message about the birth of her Raevan, but true to nature there was never enough to do to hinder the future from becoming the present. Every step she took towards the building's entrance felt like she was gathering lead in her boots while her heart thumped uneasily against her chest, sounding both too loud and too fast in her ears. What if the Raevan didn't like her? What if it remembered what she'd done to it? What if it attacked her without warning?

She paused before the glass doors, a refection of bewildered panic staring back at her now. She wasn't ready for this! Not now, maybe not ever! She should just head back home right this minute and pretend she'd never heard of the words Raevans or Lab 305. And that's what she would have done had the Brit not spied someone at the service desk. Since she'd seen them, it was highly likely they'd seen her as well. She couldn't just leave now, it was too late. Or was it? The woman sighed and walked inside.

She had seen the woman at the doors, but it wasn't unusual for people to peek in. Alex even routinely cleaned the glass doors, as most folk liked to press their sweaty brows and hands against the glass, as if it would help them see better. Surprise lit her features briefly as the woman entered and she got a good look at her - they could have been cousins! But that meant...this must be...

"Ebony Shade?" she called, a grin forming on her face. "I have got to say, you're the first person to come in here looking like you'd rather not come in at all." A jaunty dark brow lifted, putting her hands on her hips in a playful manner. "I'm Alex. I uh, I actually went to your party but didn't get a chance to seek you out after the issue with Sevilin. So..." The woman walked around the desk, extending one of her hands as she approached Ebony. "Nice to meet you, and a way belated thanks!"

The first thing that caught him was her eyes. Zul was immediately taken with the smoky grey orbs that stared at him so mistrustingly, and twice as fascinated by the black scales. He had those too, only they were sunset orange and on his back - he'd never seen any others with anything like it. She had no horns and he wasn't sure what to make of her wings, but that all seemed rather unimportant in that moment. "I am Zul," he finally remembered to say, his voice full of smoke and interest. "You are..." he trailed off, struck dumb as she moved towards him.

And wow, did she ever move! He'd never, ever seen anything move quite like the newborn was, and he was instantly locked on her in a similar way that he'd been locked on Dayo. It was the way a hunter watched prey, except like Dayo, this female was not prey - she was also a hunter. Instinctively - and perhaps not wisely - he extended one of his hands to her, to shake, to grab...to do something, but his mind hadn't quite told him what to do. If it was heat she was seeking, she would be rewarded - Zul was often much warmer than the average human, even warmer in the cool-kept Lab.

The purple haired woman frowned slight at Alex's initial response. She wasn't upset by what the other had said, just upset with her face betraying the emotions she had fought so hard to disguise before getting to the desk. At her own defeat, Ebony gave a small sigh and nodded, taking the offered hand in a strong, professional shake. "Yes, I'm sorry I'm just...nervous I guess." Her silver eyes shifted from side to side in search for any signs of another approaching. She didn't want to be caught off guard by the new Raevan at all if she could help it. "I'm glad you enjoyed the party, though I am sorry it had to end on such a sour note. You were the one who took Sevilin to the hospital right? I do hope he's doing better now, but I can't say I hold the same regard for his guardian." The Brit made no attempt at hiding the distaste she now held for the wayward shaman.

The younger Frei's dark head tilted to the side as she watched him further, or more precisely his mouth. Like those other beings, the one with different lower halves that seemed to ground them to the floor, this kin creature made sounds like they had. And yet, she still couldn't understand. How frustrating! When he extended a hand to her then, the serpent blinked for perhaps the first time since her birth. Curious, but also with obvious careful intent, the female Raevan drew even closer and lightly touched her similar appendage to his. It was warm, very warm! She had to have more! Having no concept of personal space or manners, the snake moved to wrap herself to him, pressing her cold cheek to his chest. She sighed contently and smiled, that was much better. This place wasn't so bad after all she guessed.

"Nervous," Alex echoed, although the word was stated more in surprise than as a question. She nodded at the part about the Sevilin, although the grin that lit her face about We`rika was as bright and cheery as summer. "I think I just met my new best friend," she joked with a touch of laughter, "I like you already. But - yes, Sevvie...he'll be okay, as well as he can be." Given the mutual agreement over the water Frei's Guardian, it wasn't hard to piece together what would keep Sevilin from being well.

The Italian crinkled her nose before chuckling, lifting up a clipboard and putting the contract on it, handing it over to Ebony with a pen. "Lets not let talk of that ruin the day, huh? She's in the back, with Zul - ah, that's my charge - and after I get your name on there, we'll move on to happier things." Alex gave Ebony the standard information about the paper - how it detailed the fel essence and soul, gender of the Raevan and had a spot for the name, although she didn't have to fill that out yet, and more importantly, how she was agreeing to take care of the Basilisk Frei to the best of her capabilities.

It was too easy to joke about that with the shaman as well, and so, Alex left it alone.

The demon drew in a sharp breath of surprise as he suddenly found the female wrapped up around him. It wasn't the wrapping up part that had surprised him, but rather, the cold. Zul rarely ever felt temperature differences, but perhaps because the source of the cold was on a Raevan, he could feel it - like a distant tickle of smoke on the senses, he could feel a strange type of tingling at where her skin touched his.

"You're cold," he murmured in his musty voice, resting his arms around her (mindful of those odd wings) and warming his own body temperature a bit more. The Frei inhaled, adding in an appreciative voice, "You smell good." For some reason, she had the scent of smoke in the winter air, something not quite sharp but clear and pleasant to him. Zul briefly wondered who this one's Guardian would be; namely, if their house would be warm enough to suit the cool-skinned femme.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:32 pm

Just as the Italian had been surprised by her saying she was nervous, Ebony was slightly shocked at hearing Alex say she liked her right off the bat. It wasn't often, actually it was almost altogether unheard of for her to hear anyone say they liked her so immediately. From what she could garner from past experience, people took her to be something like an acquired taste. You didn't like her initially, but in due time you grew into it.

Accepting the clipboard and pen with a nod of agreement, the violet vixen took a quick moment to ponder curiously about this woman. If she remembered correctly, she was seeing Aphismet, so it sounded more plausible when she thought of it like that. The white haired chef was one of those people quick to accepting her despite her harshness and it only made sense that he would find another with like tastes. She had wanted to say something to that affect when she got side-tracked, "Wait, she? It's a female?" Ebony didn't know why this surprised her like it did, it wasn't like she knew what gender the Raevan would be either way, yet somehow she had pictured a male. Maybe it was because she'd had more contact with that gender type of their kind as opposed to the other.

The new girl felt when the other's skin flared up a few more notches, something she appreciated very much. It wasn't long before her cold form quickly warmed due to their close embrace. She took her chance to peer up at him with those smokey orbs and flashed him a gracious smile, her only way of communicating her thanks to him then. Though she could not understand his words, she did however understand his actions and she knew she could trust him now.

The woman laughed happily, nodding. "So says the contract. I haven't seen her myself, I like to let the Guardians see their charges first." Alex smiled kindly, sticking her hands in her pockets to keep from fidgeting and worrying Ebony any further. Once the contract was signed, they could go see her, and she was certain by now that she was more excited than the Guardian this time!

She bounced a few times on her heels as she offered, "LuLu was the last female to be born. I bet she'll be very beautiful - but don't worry, Zul is a gentleman with the newborns." It was probably best to leave out that it seemed her Frei was male-orientated; no need to give the purple-haired (?! Alex noted the hair with appreciation, apparently having missed the more stunning appearance by the other woman's hesitant body language) a severe shock to the system now! It was flustering enough to first see them - and she knew that from experience. "Before you go, though, I'll give you my card in case you have any questions," Alex offered empathetically, remembering Josh and how uncertain he had seemed to be at first, "about anything. I'm always happy to help."

Indeed, the gentleman-demon was doing all he could for the newborn's comfort, even if it did mean he found the rather attractive female nestled in his arms. The mesmorizing eyes caught his again, and he couldn't help but grin in a sideways manner as she smiled at him. Zul was beginning to want to keep this one, too! "You have very beautiful eyes, like a storm, or smoke," he commented more to himself than her, eyes turning over her face. She didn't seem as...fragile as Vyn, or as timid as LuLu. No, this one seemed to have a strength beneath her scaled features, and even if she was gentle as she was now, there was still a taste of something like cold steel beneath. He liked it.

Lifting one his arms, he pointed to himself, and said clearly, "Zoo-ll." He made a show of pointing at himself again a few more times, tapping himself on the shoulder, repeating his name. If she wasn't chatty, he at least wanted her to know who he was. "Zul," he murmured again, before lowering his arm back around her partially formed body to keep her warm yet. "I am Zul and I am very pleased to meet you, Stormy." The Guardian would discover her name, but for now, the nickname of endearment would do. Or so he hoped.

The frei was silent as Hazeline drove the both of them down to the Lab. Hazeline sighed. It was not like she enjoyed forcing the white frei to recall his instance of bloodlust but the checkup had to be done to ensure that the frei was healthy and well and….not in any tendency to bite someone.

Xiu shifted his wings and stared blankly from the passenger side of the car. So…he was going to have a checkup, huh? True, Alex had called and mentioned that it was required to ensure that he was healthy but…Xiu knew that his sudden shift in diet and subsequent change because of it had probably sparked the interest of the inner scientist; of both Dr. Kyou and (to a certain extent) Alex. Xiu wondered if Hazeline shared the same feelings of curiosity. She, after all, was a person of science as well, right? Although admittedly, Hazeline was more of a plant sort of person…

The small car came to a halt in one of the parking lots allocated for the lab and Xiu, in a rather reluctant manner, followed his guardian.

“There’s nothing to worry about alright?” said Hazeline trying to sound positive. “Alex says that it’s just a regular checkup. Everyone goes for regular checkups now and then,”

“Yes,” replied out of politeness.

“Besides, your teeth, eyes and rune have returned to normal,” said Hazeline, scrapping the bottom of her conversation pot for something to cheer her charge. “That’s good, isn’t it,”

“Yes, it is. I am glad,” said Xiu, also scrapping the end of his conversation pot for a reply. He wanted time to think, to organize, to settle down… The Hungry Ghost Festival had only ended a month ago and it had; to put it simply; left quite an impression on the white frei. He was, of course, glad that the fangs had gone and was definitely pleased to see his rune and eyes change back to the colour that they originally were.

However, Xiu could not help but feel that despite his outward appearance, there were just some things that could not be erased. Like the memory of this Lab for one….

“Hello?” called out Hazeline as she entered the Lab’s entrance. “We are here for the checkup; as agreed,”

Oh, so she hadn't seen her Raevan yet either? That was very courteous of her, something Ebony could admire in the woman. Her violet head simply nodded to the rest, only half listening as the terms came crashing her back to the reality of things. Her Raevan...her Raevan. It seemed so surreal, not possible. A kin to a daydream where you knew you were dreaming yet because you were on the edge of it, couldn't grasp it. It...she wouldn't be her's until the Brit could see her. Until then, she wouldn't be real.

It was possible now that Alex's excitement was transferring some to Ebony, if only by minute scales, but the shadow of doubtfulness that had hung over the female as she'd entered the building earlier was slowly ebbing. In a quick flourish of movement, her elegant scrawl read her name at the bottom of the contract and she was already handing the pen and clipboard back to the Italian while also accepting the card. "Yes...I suppose you can never be too careful. Thank you Alex. I'll be sure to keep it with me at all times."

There was a moment of silence before Ebony opened her mouth to suggest it was time to see her Raevan when another pair came into the Lab then, another woman and a Raevan she had not seen prior. She couldn't help thinking how...white he was! That is to say, the Brit couldn't believe how the Frei managed to keep his light appearance so pristine. If it were her, the snowy fabrics would have already been tainted by some smudge of whose origins were unknown.

While Zul spoke, the new Frei nestled her head back against his delightfully warm chest. He didn't know it, or perhaps he did, but the Baphomet held a tinge of smoke in his scent as well. She couldn't help, but inhale deep. The delicious smell made her mouth water, but there was no food around, just the tempting scent of it. Oh well, at least there was heat, so food could wait. The serpent was content were she was and didn't want to go anywhere now. She was unaware that she would have to move soon and Zul would eventually have to let her go, taking her warmth with him.

"Wonderful!" she remarked with glee, accepting the contract and relinquishing the card, quickly moving to the opposite side of the desk to put it in a file. Alex flashed Ebony a quick smile as she did so, the excitement beginning to increase now that the time was here! "My pleasure. All the Raevans are--

"Hazeline! Xiu!" Alex rounded the desk again, giving Ebony an apologetic, 'just a moment!' glance before jogging the short distance towards the new twosome. Her hands sought out Xiu's, trying to restrain herself - and immediately failing, grinning ear to ear and wrapping him up in a chaste, affectionate hug. "Hey Xiu, how are you feeling sweetie?" She returned to holding his hands, green eyes lit with joy; he looked so much better! She turned to the Guardian, freeing the Raevan's hands and extending her own to Hazeline. "So nice to see you again. I'm going to give him the preliminary check up, if that's okay. Kyou is in his office though if you'd prefer. Oh!"

With her greetings aside, she stepped back and indicated the purple-haired femme. "This is Ebony Shade," she couldn't help but introduce her by her full name, it was so cool, "she's here to pick up her Raevan! Ebony, this is Hazeline and Xiu." Alex looked between the three for a moment before quipping, "Well, let's go see her, Ebony! She's in the examination room I'll need for Xiu anyway, and Xiu is a wonderful friend to make so soon." There was no doubt in her mind that Xiu wouldn't be friends with anyone.

The exciteable nature of the woman was taking over, and not giving any of them much room for protest or agreement, she winked at Ebony as she began to make her way down the hallway, flipping on the lights as she went. The Italian paused in front of one of the doors, giving a polite knock before opening it. Alex's green eyes remained on Ebony, however, true to her word that she would not see the other's Raevan before her.

Zul would have easily been content to remain as such for the day; it was, to him, completely without intent other than to keep the scaled-femme warm and to breathe in her cold, smoky scent. The demon had a strange type of attachment to the newborns, especially the females, although he didn't quite seem to pick up on it yet. He was possessive, protective, and had he been as young as he was with LuLu and Josh, he might have very well told Ebony that she couldn't have her.

The knock disturbed his peace, long ears having heard the footsteps long before. He gave a small, disgruntled sound before carefully floating away from the door and taking the Basilisk with him, rather unwilling yet to release her. Perhaps some of his youth still clung to him, as he wasn't too keen on letting anyone near the female in his arms until he felt it would be okay to do so. "Time to meet," he remarked in a low tone, one hand smoothing over her leather-clad back in reassurance, even as his brilliant blue eyes waited judgementally against his woman for the new Guardian to appear.

"Hazeline! Xiu!"

Blue eyes turned to the direction of the voice and Xiu immediately found himself within the embrace of the Italian woman. Stone grey wings flared as Xiu sought to think of something to say. Ever since that…event the Frei had not seen Alex and this gave Xiu troubling thoughts that the woman was merely putting on a brave front. The hug however, dispelled all such thoughts and the frei smiled; a genuine smile at the Italian woman. However, before the frei had much time to reply, the human whirlwind that was Alex was already introducing another human to them. Xiu gave the other a scrutinizing glance with one of the first thoughts to hit him was whether her hair was naturally purple of was it dyed that way.

Then there was all that talk about picking up a newborn. Xiu’s attention was sufficiently caught now and the frei’s gaze shifted from mere curiosity to that of thoughtful judging. Was this human suitable as a guardian? Perhaps; she had the look of a strong character about her. The white frei gave the purple haired woman a polite nod. “A pleasure to meet you, Miss Ebony,” said Xiu softly before his gaze shifted to Alex once again. The energy driven woman had already made her way towards one of the doors and Xiu, out of courtesy, hung back at a respectful distance. The meeting of a Guardian and a Raevan for the first time was an important one and Xiu; although eager, knew that it was right and proper that Ebony should be the first to see her new raevan. Then, an amusing thought struck him “Hazeline, has it been…a whole year already?” asked Xiu with quiet awe.

“It’s nice to see you, again as well,” replied Hazeline with a smile as she took the other’s hand. “And either way’s fine with me, Alex. If Dr. Kyou’s busy, there’s no reason to bother him is there?”

“And, nice to meet you, Ebony,” said Hazeline as she extended her hand to the Brit. “It must be exciting, meeting your raevan for the first time,”

The attention was then turned to Alex who stood excitedly before a door and like Xiu, Hazeline hung back. “Yes, astonishing isn’t it Xiu?” said Hazeline with a smile at her charge. “You aren’t the young one of the family now,”

A bemused smile spread across her lips as Ebony realized she was already starting to see why Aphismet like Alex as much as he did. Just from these first few moments of knowing the woman, she could see how passionate and dedicated to the Lab the woman was. And she seemed to care a great deal for the Raevans, all of them not just her own, that smothering maternal affection she'd embraced Xiu with right then being absolute proof to that.

Her smile widen by a few more degrees at Xiu. He certainly was polite and she liked that she didn't need to prompt him (nor his guardian) into calling her Ebony instead of Miss Shade like most tended to do. She was all for a show of respect, but she always fond it far too formal to be called such when it wasn't business related or such. Following after Alex, Ebony exchanged a quick handshake with Hazeline, "Pleasure to meet you as well Xiu, Hazeline." There was the smallest of hesitation before she answered the other guardian's remark. "Um, yes...exciting." 'And utterly nerve-wracking...' she thought to herself.

The Brit paused before the open door, squared her shoulders and took a deep breath. 'Everything will be fine...' was the running mantra in her mind then as she slowly entered the room and finally laid eyes upon her Raevan. At first Ebony was at a lose for words. Was she seeing things or was it some sort of horrible joke? Those silver eyes, that long black hair pulled up into a similar style and skin almost the same tone if not a few degrees lighter than her own...if Ebony didn't know better, she would have thought she was looking at herself in Raevan form. It was a bit disorienting and very very weird to say the least.

The Basilisk tilted her head in question to Zul as he glided them closer to the other end of the room. Where were they going? Somewhere warmer perhaps? The prospect of such a thing was enough to keep the dark girl complacent for the moment. Yet, suddenly her hopes were dashed when one of those bipeds showed up between them and the exit. There also seemed to be others just beyond her as well.

With a worried look, the new Frei shrunk back into her warm companion and searched his face for answers. What was going on? Who were these people and what did they want? So many questions, if only she could vocalize them so he could understand. Oh what a time to be a mute!

A nod returned Hazeline's words. "We'll get you in and out so you guys can get about your day." Alex's green eyes slid beyond the woman to Xiu, giving him a knowing wink. Something suddenly felt off - the sudden silence, as it were - and she gave Ebony a concerned glance. Usually there was a...a sigh, or a gasp, or a sound. The woman was something like statue, the look on her face appearing to be something that wasn't often there. Was the Raevan hiding?

Curious, Alex peered into the room, and was first captured by the hard blue stare of her own charge. She blinked at him a few times before lowering her gaze to the black hair at his chest, her mind taking several moments to piece together just what she was looking at. She caught a quick glimpse of the female's profile, and immediately understood Ebony's silence. "Woah," she breathed, entering the room and making a small motion for Hazeline and Xiu to do the same; she didn't think leaving the door open would be wise, with how the newborn was looking at Zul. "What are the odds, huh?" she spoke softly under her breath to Ebony.

The demon felt the female press closer, prompting his eyes to shift from Alex to Ebony. The same shock that his woman was showing surfaced on his own face, unblinkingly staring at the human for several moments. Realizing that he was holding the femme just a bit more tightly, his arms eased and he tore his gaze from the new Guardian to the Frei. Zul's lips returned to their previous smile, lifting a hand to push some of her hair from her face. "You'll be okay," he murmured in his smoky voice, "I promise."

He didn't immediately see Xiu or Hazeline just then, and as such, he lifted his attention again to Ebony. "I am Zul," he greeted her with a incline of his head. "She's cold. Is your home warm?" It probably wasn't the most important question in the world, but it was just then; the demon didn't need much more reason than that. His bone wings unfurled from his back, giving a few, lazy beats to keep them both stable.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:04 pm

At Alex’s indication, both Hazeline and her charge came forward; with Xiu showing apparent interest in how the newborn was like. The frei did not fail to notice the shocked silence and this made him curious. Folding his wings neatly behind his back, Xiu ushered Hazeline forward and settled for floating a little higher and peering above the heads of the three woman. What he saw was…unexpected to say the least. “Zul?” called out Xiu confusedly before his blue eyes slid downwards towards the figure pressed against Zul’s bare body.

“Oh….,” said Xiu softly, instantly taking in the similarities between the human and raevan.

Almost like twins thought Hazeline, stunned into silence as well. Was it coincidence or was it…the soul had been that of a lost twin or something? Hazeline was aware of reading that human souls were not allowed but the similarities were…astounding. Brown eyes flickered from the raevan to its guardian, waiting to see what would happen.

She was too stunned to notice or even reply to Alex when she'd walked up next to her. The violet haired female was even less aware of the others joining them in the room or even Zul who was directly in her line of sight. All she saw was that ashen Raevan who mirrored the same look of confusion as her guardian at that moment. There were so many emotions and thoughts crashing about in her head then as she tried to bring the words to her lips. Yes, what were the chances? What did this all mean?

It was Alex's charge who snapped Ebony out of her silent stupor with his directness. Her eyes finally raised to see him in full and was amazed at what she saw. He was...well for lack of a better word, he was glorious! Such a chaotic appearance and yet he was perfectly elegant and calm in his speech. It took her a few more minutes to finally compose herself and answer the unusual question. "Uh ello...yes, it's winter?" Ebony hadn't meant for that to sound like a question, but she desperately moved forward to hopefully redeem herself before it was too late. "The fireplace is kept roaring nearly round the clock at this time of year. She will be kept very warm."

If Zul had tightened his hold on her, the younger Frei wouldn't have acknowledged it, her attention solely on his face expectantly. The words that left his mouth were soft and soothing even if little of it was lost in translation. His light, reassuring touch helped to convey their meaning further though and the smokey femme smiled in gratitude for her friend. Finally she turned to face the others and smiled at them as well. If the Baphomet said it was okay, then she had no reason to doubt his judgement.
