Hmpf.
Hmpf.

The day barely started and it was already turning out to be one of those days. One of those days where nothing was going to happen as planned and it was just going to drag on and on and on. Oh well, maybe it was for the better, since the stallion's days have been blissfully perfect thus far, it was about time to have just one of those days.

A break from his beautiful girl was a definite need and she seemed to have no problem granting him it, but what felt like half a day alone was only an hour or so. Had Bairn fallen in love with her that much? He knew they were destined to be in love, she had agreed to be with him, but what he hadn't expected was that he'd find her perfect.

More perfect than anything he could of ever wanted and why the hell would he have wanted a day away from her? Bairn's heart ached for the (hour) he didn't get to see his mate, but she told him to go away and he wasn't going to give up a manly day to himself. Perhaps he'd find a stallion or two that he met in the past and catch up? Heck, maybe he'd run into a family member? Eh, it was probably best he not run into anyone today.

It was Bairn's day and no one was allowed to ruin it!!

Ha! He doubted that statement would last very long. Every time he declared a day to himself it was interrupted by something....why should today be any different?

Walking through the clearing, the (very old) stallion sighed to himself. Ack, it was only a matter of time until someone found him. Then he'd get wrapped up in talking to them and his whole day would be gone.

Hmpf. Hmpf. Hmpf. Hmpf.

Thump, thump, thump...

The day had begun as miserably as it still was, and would be till he could hopefully get some sleep. His eyes hurt. His brain hurt. His heart hurt. His head was starting to hurt, but as he continued to headbutt the tree as his he was mentally challenged and stuck in at repetative cycle...it was only a matter of time till it really hurt.

He had to shake the image of Abattie and that....that stallion from his mind. The one which called to the darkness inside, coaxing him to release the inner demon...

No.

Abattie was happy with this stallion, he could see it in the way she hummed merrily as they strode with a skip in her step...how her eyes lit up if she saw something move amongst the shadows...

...And how she looked right through him or worse, pictured him as that stallion when they conversed.

Soon, they would become an item, and she would not require his protection or company and surely would no longer be welcome around. He would once again be alone to fufill his duty here, and somehow that feeling created the worst feeling in his gut. Although short, his time with Abattie had been insightful, comforting and a valuable learning asset to his mission.

...but with these teachings...he knew he also enjoyed her company.

Pausing for a moment as the fur on his forehead dented this way and that showing the scratches he was receiving from the bark. Shadow knew it was more than that, why else would be so combat ineffective right now? He held feelings for her, feelings he was wishing he didn't have nor feel towards her...if he said anything about it she wouldn't be happy since she had another.

Shadow was thinking too much, feeling too much. It was times like these that he began to understand why the scientists failed to teach him anything like this....as it really was becoming a burden. One which was affecting his day to day duties.

Closing his eyes with a pained expression, one rarely seen, he dropped his head back against the tree trunk before continuing his routine.

Thump, thump, thump...

What the...?

Seriously?

As Bairn kept walking, he found himself nearing a strange...no, very strange stallion actually headbutting a tree. Not once, not twice but over and over and over. What was he thinking? A huge smile ran across the tan stallion's face as he watched for a little bit longer, not saying a word.

Whatever the reason for this stallion's insane action, it probably wasn't worth it. Or maybe it was worth it! Ah!! That's it! This young stallion was probably having female problems, that's definitely enough alone to bang your head against a tree for hours.

Poor guy.

At least he had the smarts enough to bang his head on a tree and not jump off a cliff, Bairn thought of doing that multiple times when Astia left him. But what good would ending his life do? Upset his parents, that's what it would do...and that was the last thing he wanted.

And at many times Bairn found himself kicking a stone or the like. Why was it common knowledge that physical pain would rid the body of emotional and mental pain? To a logical thinker that would seem well, illogical so why did everyone do it? Being the hypocrite that he was, Bairn titled this fellow stallion as an idiot, a fool who knew not how to help himself.

Good thing he was there to save the day! Ha! Like always.....

"Aye, boy! You may want to stop doing that, it may feel good now, ridding yourself of your....problems, but you'll have a killer headache in the morning and believe me, no problem is worth that." He smirked mockingly at the black stallion and walked over to his side.

"So what is it? What's her name?"

This could lead to a very interesting conversation, although Bairn wasn't technically in the mood to help a fellow stallion with any problem, let alone ones that involved being with a mare....but something was telling him to interfere. Hell, it was just another typical day ruined by some other idiot anyways, why not play along?

Besides......he'd love to have a great story to come back and tell Corine about. How he saved a young fool from practically murdering himself! Ha! He'd be a hero in her eyes!!

At the first sound of a voice in such close proximity the poor stallion froze and tensed, when had he ever allowed someone so close to him without first spotting them, assessing the their threat level and then chosing wether to be seen or not. No...he was definately ineffective as a combat unit. They might as well ship him back to base and put him in the storage bunker.

If the voice didn't have a kind sound behind the words, Shadow could have already been dead before he knew someone was even there.

Turning around as he spotted the older stallion, immediately he turned into a position of rank and authority...and much like a soldier, his posture stiffened and was rid of all traces of slacking or ill posture.

"I am trained and equipt to handle physical pain and channel it in a productive and beneficial manner, Sir. Yet mental and emotion pain is foreign and I am having trouble escaping this greivance." Shadow said calmly, yet despite his formal stance and manners it was clear to see he was nervous internally to be talking to someone about feelings other than Abattie.

Slightly taken back by his proverbial hit on the nail to his problems, Shadow quickly asessed the situation and he needed someone to talk to who wasn't well, the problem. His eyes drifted down for a moment, before darting up to mett Bairn's as he explained, his words fast and obviously outside the normal realm of conversation.

"My mission has been compromised, sir. The objective was to experience and live life as a final request from a dear friend, to stow away on a ship headed to new lands. Upon arrival to these lands I had met a local mare, whom through introduction and various conversations had risen in rank to friend. She is a very insightful mare who has been a mentor to me on the subject of emotions and feelings and local traditions of courtship and life. We've been together for a few days, as information like this is crutial for my mission, sir."

Maybe he understood all the soldier jabber, but it was clear to see he faultered a bit as he continued.

"From explanation....I have felt things, and can comprehend what they are. It has changed me in ways I cannot explain...but an obstacle...no. An enemy has in turn jeapordized my mission, and I am certian this stallions fraternization with her will soon jeapordize the well being of my friend. I cannot sleep, I cannot think and I cannot function knowing that he is with her and I can't do or say a thing. I have not seen her so happy, and she has told me this is what she's been dreaming of."

Closing his eyes for a moment and looking to his hooves, Shadow knew he could not be romantic like this stallion...he had no chance to win her affections.

"Her name is Abattie, sir." Little did he know to whom he was actually talking to, or he might have rethought telling her name.

Since when did he provoke such a reaction? Bairn grinned halfheartedly at the younger stallion as he stiffened up...was he expecting a fight? Ha! Like he'd ever get a fight out of Bairn. Well hell, at least he looked big and strong enough still....or this guy wouldn't have protected his ground the way he did.

Way to go ego-booster! But that was a later topic as Shadow dove head first into a story, one which Bairn had no clue how to respond to at first...

"Sounds understandable, son. Emotions can be a hard thing to channel, especially for us stallions. It's much more a mare's job, but it's no need to beat yourself over the head for it." He couldn't take it, right now it seemed as though Shadow was digging himself a whole in Bairn's eyes, making himself out to be even a bigger fool. But before he continued with any more snarky remarks, he let Shadow finish.

Seems like this guy had way more on his plate than he could handle.

"So you want to feel things and she's helping you. Alright." He grinned again, no wonder this guy was insane, he was not born and raised on these lands. Wasn't there an episode that took place long ago where the white-skinned two-leggers visited here? Yes, there had to have been....some of their horses were left behind. Could he be one of their horses? If so, they definitely talked funny.

But again, later discussion.

"And so now you've fallen for this mare but someone else got to her before you and she's fallen for the other stallion. The simple answer is that you are in love with this mare. You need to tell her how you fe-!!!!!!!!"

"Attie?" The tan stallion almost dropped to his knees at his words. His Attie? His pride and joy, the one thing in life he never regretted doing? "Um...." Bairn stuttered, sounding very close to a silly young colt trying to be tough. "Is she, uh....golden yellow, with the prettiest brown hair you've ever seen? Spots in the middle of her back...?"

He just wanted to make sure, he didn't want to assume anything in case there was another Abattie out there in the world. But Bairn couldn't help think that idea was impossible, and especially considering this stallion told him she was a master in the emotion-department, yes....definitely her.

His daughter had found love? His daughter? No way! Ha! The mare that chases each and every stallion she sees, even for a second? Hmm, he'd never thought the day would come-!

Hey wait a second, his daughter! Bairn blinked and registered the entire situation. A stallion was out there right now, with his daughter doing god knows what with her and he was standing here talking to this fool?! Ack! This fool was even in love with her! Curse the day he ever had children, really....they were such a hassle. "Abattie, hmm. Well, you literally could not have stumbled across a better soquili to talk to about this, or perhaps for your sake, a worse. Allow me to introduce myself, good sir....my name is Bairn and Abattie is, my daughter."

He grinned a wickedly vicious grin, oh boy messing with him was going to be a blast. It wasn't as though Bairn was mad at the fact that he was in love with her or that she was with someone else....she was old enough to make her own decisions....just amused that he found out this way. "So our Attie, she loves this other guy? Are you sure? Do not assume something because that's how you perceive it."'

Hm, if only Kiefer was here to join in the conversation. God knows that kid was protective of his sister, more-so than Bairn. Very....amusing. After all these years of chasing anything with legs she found a friend who, probably unwillingly fell in love with her and she doesn't even realize it...off with another guy.

"Oh, and do tell me what this enemy is like."

In...Love.

Shadow...in love with Abattie? It was something difficult to register, like being handed a life sentence or suicide mission....you knew it in the back or your mind yet to see or hear it sounded so surreal. It wasn't how Abattie explained love at all if that was the case and he'd need a review about it when he next would see her. He didn't feel that fluttering in his heart, the nervousness of even thinking about the person he was supposedly in love with....

Right now it just was a horridly jumbled mess of confusion, hurt, and anger. Nothing how love was supposed to be.

"Love might be a strong word from what i've been informed about it sir, but it wouldn't be wise to relay my emotions to her..." Why did it look like he'd just swallowed a poisonous spider? How was he aware of the nickname she used?

"Yes, Sir. A pelt with hues of the very sun in the sky, medium lengthed hair with brown colouration much.....like.....yours...." As if like clockwork he did a detailed double take of the stallion before him as he spoke, and indeed it was moment before he said what he began to fear he would that made the stallion begin to sweat nervously.

He was talking to not just a stranger....he was talking to Abattie's Father and essentially just telling him he had emotional feelings for his kin. It was like speaking with such informality to a Sargeant when one was actually talking to a General. Feeling the temperature in his face rise dramatically, he shifted under the nervousness which had doubled in size like wildfire.

"I....ah...Well, did not report she loved him, Sir. From what she was explained of love and her dream of happiness of romantic encounteres with one stallion who would become her mate for her life...It is my belief that she very well could be heading in such direction with this stallion as we speak sir!" He gulped hard, clearly unnerved by this turn of events.

If he hadn't learned to much about emotions, this would have been much, much easier.

"This stallion is a formidable enemy, one who is nocturnal in nature due to his pure black colouring. He is of no species i've seen, with horns and wings large and like a bat. There is a presence around him that is deceiving, yet I can see through it as I feel nothing but dread about his motives. I am affirmative that Abattie does not sense this or she would not be so willing to fraternize with the enemy..."

Abattie....gods he wished she was safe right now.

Had this been any other moment, with any other stallion...talking about any other mare, Bairn would have been on board talking about the whole love situation. He had, after all, done it twice...so technically he could be a master at this game. There were so many different ways of falling in love, so many different ways of expressing it....

The list goes on and on.

And Bairn could tell this stallion needed a few extra lessons in that department...but alas, this was most certainly not the time to discuss those issues. "Love comes in so many different forms, boy, you never can tell which until you admit it to yourself."

Bairn listened as the stallion before him described his precious pride-and-joy. He pictured her, standing there with the pair of them, after all this time....just smiling. She would have been there, with Shadow, grinning from ear to ear, staring at both her father and her friend. She would have been so happy to introduce them to one another! It made the old stallion sad to find out of a friend of his daughters before she was able to do anything about it. It mad him sad that she wasn't the one talking to him.

But Shadow was a friend, he could tell that much. And a friend of Abatties' was a whole hell of a lot better than a stranger. "You need not worry, boy...I'm not as tough as I let on." He chuckled.

Ack! He listened to the stallion further. It sounded very much like something his poor, dear Abattie was capable of doing. Falling for the first stallion to look her way. It saddened Bairn even further to think that this stallion that Shadow spoke of could be using her to get whatever he could out of her. She was too...too kind to see that in someone....too naive, too desperate. She wouldn't see it coming; if this stallion pushed her aside after he was done with her...

He sounded...he sounded like a Kalona! Or...a sort of creature similar to that. How could....how could Abattie fancy such a beast? Oh, wait! Bairn quickly smiled to himself....this was Abattie they were talking about....she'd fall for anything...! "He sounds...eerie. However, in my experience, boy, one must never assume something of another...." He trailed off...boy was he being a hypocrite! Perhaps the reason was to comfort not only Shadow, but himself as well. Attie, running off with a beast? It just didn't seem right!

"Erm....my apologizes..." Bairn paused for a moment and looked at Shadow directly in the eyes. He could tell that this stallion truly and honestly cared for the sun-kissed mare, whether it was friendship or something more could go either way...but he cared. He wanted what was best for Abattie...and his particular stallion wasn't that.

"So what do you propose we do?" The question seemed illogical and anti-climatic, given everything that had just taken place, but Bairn could not formulate a better response. Shadow had said nothing about trying to help her....only that it was bothering him. And if he was bothering him so much, why wasn't he with her now?

"I do not know much of what I am feeling now a days, there is so much going on and Abattie has yet to explain such things to me." Lord, it made him sound like such a robot, but in reality it wasn't so far fetched from the truth. He wasn't supposed to be feeling things like this, interracting like this....he was an instrument...given a life he didn't know how to live.

Surviving was a much better term for what he was doing at the moment.

"I apologize for not introducing myself further or inquiring to whom you were...I was not expecting to meet anyone today; further more the mare in question's father." Dipping his head lightly in a form of further apology, Shadow felt his ears slide back against his head as as his heart beat a little less erratically for the time being.

"Assumptions are wrong, I know them to be; they get you killed in the field of battle. But it is not something I can ignore...if there is good in him, the evil in his intentions bock it completely out of sight. I know only despair will come out of this conclusion...more than just...my own." He was going to lose her, it was apparent that this beast of a stallion would have nothing to do with him and eventually drive her away from him. After all, he was just a friend and there was a million more where he came from who knew how to be one.

Sighing curtly, he cast a look over his shoulder as if by some miracle, she would come galloping into sight.

Yet that wasn't the case, as Bairn spoke up and asked an interesting and stupidly obvious question....one which never even crossed his mind. What was he going to do about it? Obviously he couldn't come to grips with allowing the stallion to have his way with Abattie....

"I......" Shadow began, the words slipping from his mind as it left his mouth open and silent as the inner workings of his mind battled with his emotions. "I....don't think I can do anything....sir. She thinks the world of this stallion....why would she listen to someone as hapless as me? Is it so wrong to let my notions of this stallion known to her and tell her what not to do with her life? What if she won't listen, and I really lose her forever..."

Why did his heart ache at the mere mention of never seeing Abattie again? It was as if demons were clawing at his very soul, cackling to see him lose another one precious to him.....

Maria.....Abattie......why did he keep failing?

Hmm. The older stallion chuckled softly to himself as he listened to Shadow speak. He had to give it to the guy, though, regardless if he seemed rather ignorant of basic emotions...Bairn had to admit he'd been there, done that too. When Astia first came into his life he wasn't ready to feel anything but those feelings came anyways. He needed all the advice he could get from his family before he was willing to admit to her how he felt.

So he supposed being short with the guy wasn't the smartest approach. "Then don't worry about admitting anything just yet." He stated, nodding his head. He wasn't big on emotions...he never had been. His daughter was the expert in that department...she would be better suited to show him what he was feeling anyways.

"Oh, it's alright. Consider it a positive that you ran into me. I know my daughter and perhaps I can help. She loves her Papa...she'll listen to me." Bairn laughed, feeling proud. He'd be able to save his daughter from the clutches of someone who was apparently 'evil', and give her over to the stallion who cared for her. He'd be a hero! Haha!

But she's old enough to take care of herself. His mate's voice rang into his ears, nagging at him to leave her be. It was...not necessarily the right thing to do, but it was the sensible one. All Bairn had for proof of this stallion's intentions were the words of a stranger. That was all.

"Listen. If she considers you her friend, she'd be willing to have a chat with you about her current situation. You think this stallion is capable of hurting her? Then I would try your best to tell her. The worst she could do is not believe you...but then, at least the thought of that is in her mind. She might get mad but she wouldn't ignore what you said."

Bairn watched him as he struggled with words. Shadow seemed to be at a loss, and Bairn didn't really know what else to say. The stallion didn't want to hurt his friend, but he didn't want to lose her. Bairn didn't want to be the over-bearing father...

Oh well...

"If you don't do anything, I will. Tell me where they are and I will drag her by her tail all the way home, if I have to."
PostPosted: Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:49 am

"My....Friend..." Shadow echoed, drifting off in mind and sight as he could vividly see Maria...how she put everything on the line to teach him not how to survive, but how to live. Life had no prior meaning than to fight when ordered to fight and to stand down when he was done...but Maria had changed that. The young girl had died on his account, a loss which still rocked him to the core.

What are you waiting for Shadow? You never were hesitant to jump into battle... The mental image of Maria seemed confused to him, as his own image bitterly shook his head. I am no longer that stallion...I have no orders to rely on otherwise. Besides...what if what I am doing isn't the right path? He couldn't lose her.

He wouldn't lose her.

Shadow...when matters of the heart are concerned, there is no right or wrong way to feel since no two people feel the same at times. Someone else might be happy for Abattie....but to you...when your whole world is endangered of course you would be feeling this haunting confusion and rage. You don't have to be anyone but yourself now...

Closing his eyes as he could feel the painful clenching of his heart in his chest at the memory, he lost his only prior friend to his inability to not think for himself...Shadow was determined not to do it again.

"No..." He began, opening his eyes and looking up to Bairn who had all but prepared to go fetch his daughter himself from the dangerous stallion. While this would have been a perfectly acceptable course of action for many it would only serve as another reminder that he did nothing to change the course of his life...he was free yet still acted as if he was living in chains. He wasn't...Maria was to thank for that.

And Abattie for teaching him how to feel again.

"I cannot stand and let you do that, sir. Something needs to be said...and it needs to be said by me. Its no longer the crush....and even though the whole ordeal is more confusing than sensible I want her to know how I feel...about her." He could lose her....but he refused to let her go without telling her such, and thanking her if she was to run off into the sunset with this b*****d.

"....And if he's done anything to her, I will end him." A cold look crossed his face, battle worn and confident...while he could very well not be successful in his threat of death if she was harmed he would give it all, life included to keep her from harm.

The young stallion seemed to be in the middle of an inner struggle with his thoughts, so Bairn stood there quietly, watching Shadow as his facial expressions changed from moment to moment. Whatever was going on inside the young stallion's mind was enough to make any normal and sane stallion cringe, most likely. It appeared as though one side of him was arguing, or at least trying to reason with the other and Bairn liked simple. Yes, simple. Inner struggles were sometimes pointless nowadays.

"Alright, I won't do anything. But if you need any help, I'm willing to do whatever it takes to protect my daughter if her life was in danger. I'm not saying you can't, I mean you're probably fully capable of protecting her, but it's a father's duty." The old stallion smiled, he really didn't mind it if the stallion wanted to go out and do things himself, but Bairn would probably end up following him in the distance anyways. It was after all, like he said: a father's duty.

"Good to hear. But I suggest you talk to her first. See what happens."
PostPosted: Thu Apr 19, 2012 5:46 pm

Help....he'd never been able to accept someone like that before; not before coming here anyways. He'd received such immeasurable help from Abattie, and now was offered the same of her father. It allowed a ghost of a smile to curl on his lips, it was wonderful to see family before him - not in the sense they were perfect; but the bonds he could see from father to daughter ran deep.

He had imagined such a future and himself in Bairn's position, but had to keep himself in check as he knew he may very well never be able to sire any foals of his own.

Not that it really matters, I have my duty.

"I shall take your suggestion in the utmost regard, Bairn." Shadow spoke solemnly, fully intending to do just that...talk. See if he could prove to the mare who already taught him so much just how well he was paying attention on his lessons of feelings. "I'll talk to her...and if these words and feelings I've acquired in our short time together can't suffice...I will come for you."

He had a feeling, this was something he was simply meant to do himself.

Something in the wind caused the stallion to perk his ears and his head to snap to the side; he could have sworn he heard something...something whispering to run. He looked confused for a moment, a moment of forlorn when he could have been certain it almost sounded like Maria...

But there it was.

That absolutely dreadful weight in his stomach.

I can't shake this feeling that I have, I sense there's something in the wind; That feels like tragedy's at hoof....

Looking back to Bairn with that serious soldier look appearing on his face he dipped his head down low and spoke out with a sense of urgency in his tone. "Thank you for your wisdom...I will be in touch but I must depart now."

There was not a moment to waste, as Shadow fell into old behaviors of heading off to battle he reared back and took off the way he came; he still had to backtrack to where they had been previously...and then he would have to dauntingly track the mare down again. The stallion hoped she hadn't gone too far, that everything was alright and that he was simply being psychotic as he was told he often came across as. Hooves pounded the ground as he nearly soared across the lands, intent on finding her.

Intent to protect what was his, be it friend or that nagging feeling welling up inside of him.
