All right, so this is my first year of marching. We have a great drill, a great band, a great set of music. We nail it and try our best and make it through our first competition.
Well, this past week we went to State Qualifier. We are one out of three 5A bands. So after everyone is finished, we gather on the field to see the scores. After 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A groups' scores are announced, we finally arrive at 5A.
"With a score of 43.5....
[insertourbandnamehere]"
At our previous competition we scored a 58. The whole band was devastated. We won 3rd place, and we aren't going to the State competition. Our director ranted and read off the judges' comments and gave us a summary of what they were and whatnot.
The judges were biased towards us. That's all I can say. And I am not saying this because we're not going to State, I'm serious. My director has a friend that was sitting with the judges when the smaller bands were out (made of about 13 or so people) and they laughed at them.
So here's what I ask: Has anyone ever been unfairly scored? Or maybe the score you heard wasn't what you thought it would be?
Or has anything similar to this happened?

We all thought we got ripped off at state last year. It was one of the best times we had played our show, and then we get yet another excellent. meanwhile, a band that did far worst got a superior with distinction. We didn't get any captions either. Everyone in the crowd said we did better then most of the bands out there. We deserved a superior, but lall we got was an excellent. They hadposters for each band at the festival which there is always a small competition to be the first to grab, and on oursthe seniors wrote "superior" over half of our name. Our BD hung it on the wall and now uses it as a lecture tool>.>
"We didn't get a superior last year because...." And he goes on and on about things we did wrong at that pointXD It varies epending on what happened.

oh yes! our band was badly scored by a judge once. Apparently, he had one of the 4A bands score hgiher than one of the 6A bands (ha! that's a laugh) i can't remember off the top of my head what the score was, but it was lower than what we deserved. even our BD thought so. After the awards were given out, our BD went to the judge that gave us the low score and had a little "chat" with him. Really he chewed off that judges ears! XD on the bus, we were chanting "belski is what? RED HOT! belski is what? RED HOT! belski is R E D with a little bit of H O T oh baby R E D with an H O T red hot red hot red hot! UGH!" 3nodding we still made it to champs. though

At state finals this year we were ripped off now! State really likes doing that>.> Our bd said it was te best time we performed it, but yet our score was the lowest of all season!
We got 8th place out of 10. We deserved 5 or over. Now why did we get 8th? The judges were biased, according to I think it was the drumline instructor. Our town has a different style then the state capital, where we performed. Therefore, we got a lower score because our technique was different. On the judges tapes, the judges were commenting on our style, telling us we should do it their way instead of the way we have done it all year. In our town, we never hear that. Outside of our town, we do. And you know what else? The 1st place school was the worst there. Something I noticed: The closer the school was to the stadium we were at, the beter cscore they got. Hm, very suspicious>.>
Ad then the 5th place band(whose show was ironically called "the 5"XD) Were basically pit and guard, with I think 3 woodwinds, and they looked realy cool, all these visuas and such, but when they played, plug your ears and hope you die! The pit was fine, the guard was occasionally off but overall fine, but the winds...ew. Their visuals were awesome, which is pretty much our guess on what they were scored on, but is it really fair to judge a band on their visuals? Yes, visuals are a large part of it, but it should not make or break our score. Marching band is a collaboration of sounding and looking cool, not looking cool and pretending you sound cool. It is called marching band not marching dance.
