If you don't mind the camcorder style of filming, and you like scary movies, it was pretty sweet.

I doubt I'd find it scary. Everyone said Quarantine was scary, but I had seen it on the second day and laughed through the whole thing, if I had paid to see it I would have been pissed but I knew the manager so I got in for free. I wouldn't mind seen Paranormal Activities for free, but no way in hell would I pay to see a potentionally terrible movie.
I'm a very touch horror/scifi movie nerd/critic. I love them to death, but the average one is terribly ridiculous. They are my favorite kind of movies, though I can never pass up a GOOD drama, I love my horror and scifi films.

We don't get any of these films shown over here. sad They probably just come straight on DVD after 4-6 months. So I'll tell you then my opinion on those films you've mentioned. I'm sure I'll rent them one day, because I like my horror/splatter/gore/thriller/zombie/slasher/sci-fi movies. biggrin Does this mean I'm too boyish? I dislike dramas/romantic comedies/chick flicks in general, I'd rather watch like something with blood flying around or some psychological thriller.

The VAST majority of horror/sci-fi movies that come out these days are really terrible. That's part of why I was so surprised by this one. Stylistically, it's in the ballpark of The Blair Witch Project, so you could use that as a reasonable measuring stick before you by a movie ticket. PA is better than TBWP, though. As an aside, if you're the type who goes to horror movies just to laugh at how terrible they are regardless of actual quality and thus reinforce some deluded sense of courage and self worth by not being scared, you will of course not like it. And if you're not one of those people, I'm sure you know the type I'm talking about, and as such you know better than to go watch a horror movie with somebody who IS one of those.

There are at least two other movies I want to see right now, and both take priority over this one. If I have some free time (unlikely, since the midterm season is upon me), I'll give it a try. I won't be terribly disappointed if I miss it. I actually haven't seen a horror flick in theaters in a long time now, probably the reason Digi mentioned--there's almost nothing worth seeing. It's all either cheap "Boo" scares that get old after the second time or mindless gore.
@Mana: Au contraire. If only more girls were like that...

I don't go to those movies wanting to laugh, I'd prefer to actually get scarred or at least surprised, but no new horror movie has done that in at least 6 years. Actually all I look for in movies now is that they keep me entertained for a few hours, I gave up on the media showing any good movies in theatres any time soon, all the best movies just go straight to DVD.

Shadowlit Facade @Mana: Au contraire. If only more girls were like that... 4laugh But I don't have any male friends to watch movies like this with. So I only watch them with my brother and his friends. My female friends don't really think much of horror/splatter/thriller movies, so I rarely get to see them since I don't want to watch them alone and I don't live at home where my brother still lives.

Just watched it last night, I've got mixed feelings on it. It's so-so. I don't know, I'm not really big on the whole horror genre.

Sphere was a great movie, not the best acting, but it was very well done, for the most part at least.

So what then, by most estimations in here, is the "best" scary movie?

I didn't like Event Horizon, it was boring and blaah. Though it's been years since I saw it, I might have different opinions about it if I saw it now. Sphere was pretty good, but it was LONG and it moved slowly. Is it the film where they had this liquid that they could breathe in? They put mice in it as a demonstration. If so, that scene stuck with me. biggrin Was it that they had to go get some sphere from like the bottom of an ocean or something? Too lazy and tired to check IMDB.
And I don't think there's a THE BEST horror movie ever. There are lots of good ones but at least twice as many mediocre and crappy ones. There was a thread in The Stormbeard Guild not long ago about favourite horror films and I only listed films that made me go OH MY ******** GOD/HOLY s**t! I remember listing: Alien (saw it when I was really young and was really scared afterwards and slept curled up in a ball for weeks scared that an alien would come through my stomach D: ), Dead Birds (holy ********! crying ), Ju-On (the Japanese Grudge) and John Carpenter's The Thing (this I also saw when I was really young and heads flying off and all the creepy tentacle things freaked me out sad )

There was a good Sci-Fi movie that just came out in Australia called Moon. It isn't in the major cinemas, but it was better than any movie I've seen this year. It's about clones having their memories tampered in order to sustain free work for energy organizations on the moon, I may have just ruined it for you but you probably wouldn't be interested if I said "just watch it, be amazed". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/
