I'm sure you all know about Disney's The Princess and the Frog [release date December 11th, 2009], where the princess is (finally) black. Anywho! Has anyone noticed the skin colour of the prince? He's most certainly not black. What are your feelings on this? Do you think that Disney could be suggesting something with the white prince and black princess?

The prince isn't white. He's middle eastern. I think some people are taking disney a little too seriously. especially with this movie. Disney has been doing interacial relationships for the longest. Nobody remembers the Cinderella remake where brandy played cinderella with a phillapino prince and whoopi goldberg was his biological mother and a white man as his biological father. Disney has all females of every other race and most have white beau's. I dont see anything that disney snatched away.

I'm sorry. I should have specified. I'm talking about the animated Disney Princesses -- starting with the 1937 Snow White. I'm startled that it takes almost 3/4 of a century to make a black princess. Taking Disney a little seriously... if you say so, but think about how serious Disney is. Think about the lives of the little girls the movies impact. Cinderella, Snow White and Belle all posses and iconography, if you will. They almost serve as models for these little girls. From what I remember that wasn't a single black person in Snow White, Beauty & the Beast, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake... do I need to go on? The closest "we got" was Aladdin. So it kind of peeves me when we do finally get a black princess and she's seemingly shrouded out. Furthermore.. when has a Disney princess every married a black man and fallen "happily ever after" with him? Oh s**t.. they can't because they're never in the movies.
And no - I didn't forget Robert and Hammerstein's rendition of Cinderella (which I absolutely love and have the soundtrack of on my computer). But was it meant to be their redemption? Gonna throw in the blacks, the whites, and let's not forget the Asian prince to really mix it up? So with The Princess and the Frog, are they not doing the same thing? Why isn't ok for there to be a black prince for a "happily ever after"

That was said in another thread in the guild and I'm going to give the same answer. What your saying here about African Americans can be said for any other races that disney hasn't made a princes or princesses for yet. Hawaiians, hispanics, etc. Can you really say that sucks for those races. I'm not them so whatever. Yes the other princesses were very iconic and served as models for little girls. Did skin color matter to us then as little girls? no. It was the fact they had the content of character we had. The same personalities. Belle represented bookworms, Ariel represented girls with imaginations, pochontas represented girls with adventerous spirits, and each disney girl princess or non princess represented a certain type of character and different types of beauty. Thats why we bonded with them so well. Not because someone was the same color as us. Not all the time a person relates with or looks up to a cartoon character because they are the same color. Because that characters personality and taste dont represent everybody in their race. Disney has shown it could make other beautiful girls of color as well. It's good to show other races can have an happily ever after. Why should black people be the first people of color to be made first or shown first all the time?. African americans dont have to be the first to show this. Disney has even made a girl that is usually shown as a white girl heavily dark skin((Esmerelda)). yes it's nice that there is an african american princess and hopefully she will have little girls look up to her not only because of her being african american. But because she has a personality and spirit girls can relate to. Then later on in the years disney will show a black prince and do the same with other races and the same will happen with them. I'd rather have waited for this a long time and have it be just as legendary as the others. Then have disney force it out and it's horrible. I dont think disney is trying to say anything about black men not being kingdom worthy or anything like that. But disney watchers are alot of little girls not boys and so disney mostly targets girls. Maybe disney is going to show the hardships of both people of color and the problems they go through as an interracial relationship even though their both people of color through these two. I think we are taking on this cartoon too seriously. I know we want little African American girls through this princess to feel represented and have their beauty shown. And boys feel the same through a prince. But this character cant represent every little black girl. Same when disney makes their black prince. Someone will always find a problem. The same responsibility was given to storm and bishop people found problems with them.

Just looks like a Black Belle and he looks like Gaston. If anything I'm more insulted by the fact that they just look re-colored. Which is just damn lazy.
Also the story-line is laughable at best and my aunt was a part of the planning for this film. Let me tell you the first concept art would have made you cringe. Her lips looked like a frog and her hair was all pickninny like. Plus remember her initially her name was going to be "Manny" and she wasn't going to be a princess but a Chambermaid.
I don't know why people can't understand that Disney is a racist AND sexist company. They always have been and they clearly always will.
Yeah I won't be seeing it as I hardly watch any Disney films anyway.

Lol. He does look like Gaston a bit and she kinda does look like belle.
I do remember rumors initicial storyline. They were going for the whole rags to riches story like cinderella. Hmm the art was that bad huh? glad for the changes.
Trust me I agree disney is sexist and rascist. But since they brought marvel. I cant say anything bad or they might ruin god knows what. sweatdrop crying

As disney did ask a small number of Black people some in the Hollywood biz and some outside for their opinions on the art and story-line. Which is why the name was changed as well as the art. As remember this was BEFORE Obama and the election. It's funny because after Obama beat Hillary for the party ticket Disney no longer care for anyones opinion and just gave out free Disney store coupons for everyone who was a part of the panel. Which is why you see said changes again. Because my aunt said that everyone agree that the Prince had better be Black else something like this would come up. On the re-coloring part: I had the Little Mermaid coloring book way back for windows '95 and I would always make everyone Black. Plus most Disney Princess or females in general all look the same. I think Lilo the only one that breaks the pattern. Still it goes both ways. I mean why does she have to have Jungle fever or why can't they? Will a White Princess (though I'm unsure if we have any left) someday fall in love with a Black prince? Who knows? Cause Middle Eastern or not the prince in this movie looks white with Aladdin's tan. razz I'm sure this movie will be talked about all this year and next year. More so next year when people actually have a chance to see it.

If they got Oprah to do this movie. The changes must of been decent. Lol although he does look like gaston with aladdins tan.
I think the disney girls broke the mold. Because I do admit the famous six ((I think the princesses called)) do look like one girl with different hair colors and shades.
I knew arguements over the prince were going to happen when I saw a youtube video with just the art. Half of me hoped people wouldn't take it seriously. But I just knew alot of people were going to complain very highlyknowing the prince wasnt going to be African American as well.
Actually I knew this movie was going to get complaints period. Disney and the african american community always bump heads constantly. Alot of it is there fault because of their portrayls of black characters and art. But I'm glad they are listening to some sort of reason now.
I dont really like the term Jungle fever. But I do agree it can go both ways. I'm going to say a when disney makes a white princess will fall for a man of color. Which probably isn't too far behind from being made. Look for their first openly gay couple. Because thats going to come up very soon. Then disney will really get some flack.

xd I just took it that he was light skinned. Oh well, regardless, I'm definitely going to go see this movie. Judging from the previews, I think Disney did a classy job.

The prince isn't white, or Middle Eastern. His ethnicity is made-up (yeah, his name is Indian or whatever, but his ethnicity is still made up). However, when I first saw the prince, I thought he was just a light skinned black guy (I've seen black people in real life with his skin color and hair type).
Anyway, I'm not surprised. Anytime a movie features a black couple (black guy/black girl), it doesn't do as well as movies that feature white or mixed couples, so that's why movie makers tend to shy away from black girl/black guy main character couples in film.
However, I don't care that the prince isn't black. I'm just glad that the movie is 2D. I love hand-drawn animated movies more than 3D computer animated movies. I'm glad that Disney is finally going back to what works best.

I see nothing wrong with having a prince with a different ethnicity.
edit: I do see a problem. He's ugly.

Not that I'm 100% educated but from what I only read (not seen) the porn biz is pretty flipping racist.

Pretty Leaf I see nothing wrong with having a prince with a different ethnicity. edit: I do see a problem. He's ugly. Gaston mate. Gaston. None of the dudes on Beauty and the breast were handsome. Gez, Beast looked better as a Beast than human and I think I actually said that as a child too. yeah I said "ew mama now he really looks like a beast. He looks like one of the guys from New Kids on the Block" rofl Early 90's male fashion. OY

He's not white, he's has a middle eastern name, which would make this story very inaccurate. How many middle eastern people lived in old New Orleans? Most were French, Black, or Creole. I will still watch....
