Ugh i get so sick of people saying that band aint a sport. we do the same exact thing as other sports....just more graceful and musical lol. we also get hurt even as often and as badly in band as the football players do. is there a debate in your school about whether band is a sport? also i wanna know what kind of injuries you or another band member in your band has gotten.

In my school, they say cheerleading is a sport when they don't even do half the running/pushups we do, but they say band is NOT a sport and it's just a club. Funny thing is that we get a P.E. credit for being in band.

ok now for the injuries!!! ok mine alone...
hit in the balls with my sax
spit my lip open several times (braces)
pulled muscles
broken ankle
sprained ankle
concussion from tuba and bass drum being in the wrong spot
carpal tunnel in my right wrist/thumb
passed out several times (one last week after we performed)
yesterday while running, pit left the heavy metal round thing on the ground (not a cymbol i forgot what it's called) and i broke my toe
and 2 broken ribs last year

Band is a sport! And its the best sport.
My injuries from my clarinet:

I stabbed my gum with my reed.
I once slammed my hand into my case and made it swell up.
Today I was walking around playing a F Major scale and tripped, and now my knees hurt really bad (I used them to catch me so that I didn't land on my instrument)
And some more that i can't think of right now.

I agree, it's definitely a sport.

Haha, injuries...I've gotten lots of those. Mostly stabbed in the gum, teeth, eye and ear often with my reed/mouth piece. My sax is out to get me. Oh, and not to mention the horrible neck sore I get from my neck strap. Also, marching backwards into trombones kinda sucks. (lmao) Being drummed on. (screw you Connor...) Oh, and the fact that I often hurt myself putting the case in my locker; I did that today, I had to get my friend to help me. Trust me, there are plenty more.

Just curious. How do you stab your ear with your mouthpiece and reed? i understand hitting your gum and teeth with it but not your eye and ear.

ummm actually only some forms of marching band is considered a sport, most traditional corp style schools in reality barly do anything. but when you bands that take after most HBCU(Historical Black College University) that style is really considered a sport due to the live energy. corp styles is more like walking with a striahgt leg and filling the horn up enough to be heard, HBCU or SHOW style is where you fill the horn up ALL the way with full energy and legs are at 90s

most high schools are not that style(mainly seen more in Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Baton rouge(Louisiana), Mississippi, Georiga, Florida Alabama
some major colleges that are this style if ya'll do not know what the style is!!
Florida A&M, Southern U. Prairie View A&M Texas Southern Texas college, Alabama A&M, alabama state, norfolk state, virgina state, University of arkansas @ pine bluff

this style really gets you going, in 3 months i went down from 180 to 150!!! and you pull muscles real easy with this style, become dehydrated. I've literaly cracked my reed in half playing so much with my overactive energy and cut my lip(DID NOT STOP ME FOR S***!!!) SO THOSE OF YA'LL IN CORP STYLES, STOP WHINING!!!!

Well, imho that's what differentiates it from a sport: the fact that it incorporates musical performance, and the emphasis on the visual aspect of the forms.

And I agree with SG862, it depends on the band how intense the marching is. i.e. ROLLSTEP IS FOR BABIES LOL jk please don't kill me

I mean, we all know band is challenging and fun and awesome, and it not being a sport doesn't make it any less so. So whatever, I'm fine with it either way.

at my school we get varsity lettering points because we compete with nationally known bands like broken arrow and because we almost get frost bite and kill ourselves....lol
injuries:
hit by trombone(like 6 times)
ran down by contra(friend chasing me)
hit in the head, toe, and collar bone by mellophone mouthpeice(don't march with that mouthpeice any more)
dropped big metal mello case on my foot(ouch)
got hit in the back of the head by trumpet
re re re screwed up my knees(for like the 20 millionth time)
re screwed up my wrist for the 2nd time
pulled muscles(mainly in neck)
and others i can't think of right now

I totally agree.

But the only injury I've ever experienced in band was when I gripped too far up my quad sticks and I did a rim shot with my index finger. It was so swollen.

Same here(Arizona) I took PE and marching band last year. Plus ^:30 morning rehearsals. I had band, PE, band everyday. AM rehearsal, 1st perid PE, 2nd period band. By the end of the seeason(since band camp) I had lost 30 lbs. Then I gained 60 during concert and summer stare So far I've lost 10 more. And at this very moment have decided to actually try and run my whole lap as fas as I can. Yeah, fat people dn't run weellxD

As for injuries:
One of our tubas gets hurt every year. I'm not sure about his freshamn year, but the year ebfore I came he had a neck brace on for some reason, last year he broke his toe and couldn't march, and so far this year he has only had a dislocated shoulder and knee ache.
As for me:
since I started MB last year, I have almost passed out 3 times. 2 times were this year.
I often stab myself with my clarinet. Roof of mouth, gum, teeth, chin, forhead, nose, earXD I almost got my eye once too
I'v never broken/sprained/fractured a bone. Last year I did however often have aching calves because MB is the most excersise I have ever gotten. I did dance, but it barely measures up.
Then on Monday rehearsal this weeek we were running back to our spots and all of a sudden the back of my knee felt like a knife was being stbbed into it. and that was when there was still an hour of rehearsal. Everyone was yelling at me because I could barely walk, let alone run to my spots. They were lucky I was marching>.> It hurt real bad, but I hate letting everyone down. I'll barely go out if I'm about to pass out. i only do if it is really bAd or someone makes me.

So, the first tiem i almost passed out was the day of state marching festival, and rehearsal was almost done but it was about noon. We were doing outdoor music rehearsal, just running through in concert arcs before marching on the field, and my stomach started hurting and I got real dizzy.I stopped playing and was just trying to remain standing when the BD came by and noticed I wasn't playing. He asked what was wrong and I said I felt like I was about to pass out. He told me to sit down and drink lots of water until i felt better.
Then for the first game of the year this year I started feelign the same way during warm ups, and the band parents had to come and take my jacket off and had me sit down with some water. I drank a whole water bottle wile I was sitting there. I'm pretty sure it was because I hadn't eaten anything all day. Well, I wasn't feeling better before they went on and it felt terrible watching them march on the field without me. I've made sure to eat before games since then.

You'd be surprised how hard corp style is, actually. "Barely do anything?" Have you seen the drill for some schools? Everyone in my band's show is almost constantly moving throughout the whole show (about ten minutes), and everyone has gigantic stepsizes and awkward moves. And jazz running, of course. So, please, don't tell me that my marching is easy unless you've actually done it.

As for injuries...our band is full of them. One flute player has a bad knee and ankle, another flute has had two sprained ankles (at the same time) and her knee is horrible, one of our mellos has tendinitis in her shoulder...so many. xd A friend of mine in guard got a concussion, and she broke her nose a week after while practicing. xd A lot of people almost pass out during band camp, too. I also murdered my knee last year from having gym and band in the same semester.
