The hatching was over. It had been quite tumultuous, rather dramatic, and very traumatic. Daeluin had witness her first death. She had been witness to a torrent of witless, senseless violence that left her both shocked and disgusted. There had been few redeeming qualities about the hatching. The fact that she had been left standing was rather soothing, actually. Daeluin didn't know if she could handle a hatchling dragon if that is how violent and overly-emotional they were. The young woman had been having some serious doubts about candidacy, after being subject to all that had happened.

Her life at home, within the trading caravan, had always been peaceful. Sure, there had been a shouting match between traders over a deal, or a fist fight between young, teenage boys for reasons unknown (raging hormones, anyone?) but Daeluin had never seen such malicious actions as she had recently. It was quite a shock. Still slightly traumatized, Daeluin passed through her day in a semi-daze. Since she was no longer technically a candidate, she lacked the strict regimen of chores the candidatemaster had implemented. Instead, Daeluin had most of the day to herself.

Around midafternoon, with the sun high in the sky, Daeluin made her way out to the Weyrbowl. She clutched her thick sweater tightly around her upper body. Despite the sun, the air had a crisp bite to it. Over one arm hung a picnic basket, with Daeluin's simple lunch contained inside. A couple sandwiches, some fruit, and some roasted vegetables. Nothing spectacular, but the dark-skinned woman's stomach growled eagerly nonetheless. A blanket held in her other hand makes for a good sitting area; Daeluin first sets the basket of food down, then spreads the blanket, with a flick in the air to remove wrinkles, on the ground. With everything in place, the former candidate settles herself down to sit and quietly eat her lunch.

Eating, bathing and oiling complete, Redfith's skin shined in the sun. Zia on the other hand was covered in oil and sand scrubbed from the hatchling's hide. The newly made rider decided a walk would be good for the pair, they would be able to be social with anyone they met, and it gave Zia the chance to work out her sore muscles, sleeping in the Weyrling barrack was going to take some getting used to.

"You're all clean and so beautiful, Redfith."

There are dragons more beautiful than me.

"I don't think so, love. You're the most beautiful of them all," She spoke with bias of course. "Look, when you are bigger you'll eat over there," Zia spoke aloud, mentally speaking was something the young woman was not used to. Wherries mulled around their pen as the dark haired girl spoke.

They walked along the lake shore, Zia shivered as a light breeze swept past her. We can go inside if you are cold, Mine.

"I'm not too cold, do not worry," Zia nodded and patted the green's side, "Just should have brought a sweater along with me."

Look, Mine! Over there is a person, she is all alone, can we say hello?

Zia laughed, her dragon wanted to meet and greet just about everyone the pair had come into contact with. Redfith picked up her pace and charged toward the girl, her posture relaxed, full belly causing her to waddle.

Though it was in plain view, Daeluin tried to avoid looking at the feeding pen while she was eating. The sight of a dragon feeding did not unsettle the young woman, it was just something that she'd rather not watch while she, herself, was eating. Instead, Daeluin watched the goings-on in the Weyrbowl. There were a multitude of people out and about, crossing the Bowl on their way to complete a chore or errand. Some were simply taking a leisurely stroll out in the brisk air. Daeluin inhaled deeply. Despite the chill in the air, it felt good to take a deep breath of such cold, clean air. She smiled with content around a bite of a wherry-and-some-sort-of-vegetable sandwich. It tasted alright, especially with that sweet, but tangy, sauce drizzled on it.

The cooks here were good.

While chewing slowly, Lulu found her attention drawn to a strolling weyrling pair. She vaguely recognized the girl, and her green. She was one of the dragonets that had stood out in the clutch, for not being violent. The green was a pretty little thing, dark green with lighter green dappling over her backside, including the tops of her wings. Daeluin smiled, and offered them a friendly wave while hoping she wasn't being too forward.

Zia raised her hand and waved vigorously, "Mind if we join you? Redfith here's very interested in keeping you company." She could feel the dragon's excitement through their mental connection.

I do not like to see people without friends.

It doesn't mean she doesn't have friends if she is sitting alone. Maybe, she wants to be alone. Zia corrected Redfith kindly.

Redfith stopped at the edge of the blanket and Zia stood a foot or so behind her, not wanting to interrupt the girl's day much more than they already had.

Why would she want to be alone?

Some people are not social all of the time, some line to spend time doing solitary things.

Before coming to the Weyr, Daeluin had never really wanted for friends. Within the caravan had been a multitude of people, ranging in age from infancy to the elderly. She had always had friendly company! But since coming to the Weyr, she found her life rather... quiet. It had been a welcome change the first few days- and certainly now, after the traumatic hatching. Some time alone to reflect in quiet peace was just what Daeluin wanted.

But she certainly didn't mind the company Zia and her green were offering! As she had recalled a few moments ago, the green weyrling was one of the few from the hatching that had not been so viciously violent. Daeluin was rather eager to meet the amiable weyrling. Her rider seemed equally friendly, as well. Lulu returned the rider's smile and beckoned them over with a wave.

"Oh, no! I don't mind at all! In fact, I'd really love some company," the young woman admitted, setting aside her sandwich and patting the space on the blanket beside her. There was ample room for both girls, and the young dragon.

"Sorry to interrupt your lunch," Zia grinned and sat beside the other young woman, "My name is Zia, this is Redfith."

She seems very nice, she will be a nice friend, Redfith's eyes swirled a slow emerald green that matched her hide. She rounded behind her rider and flopped down between the other woman and hers. Her nose poked at the basket curiously.

"I think I saw you on the Sands," Zia's memory sometimes left something to be desired she had a very hard time recalling faces and names, but this woman looked familiar to her, "Have we stood together before?"

Zia tugged her braid, habit she was trying to kick, realizing what she was doing she tucked her hands in her lap and looked up at Daeluin.

"Really, no need to apologize! You aren't interrupting a very exciting lunch, anyway," Daeluin hastily assured the other girl, the smile offered gentle and reassuring. "I'm Daeluin," she began, sticking out her hand to be shaken, "but like all my friends and family, you can call me Lulu."

Inspecting Redfith quickly, Lulu couldn't tell where the dragon's eyes were; they were the same color as her hide, and just about blended in! Daeluin dredged up some knowledge of dragons and their eye color, she remembered that green was good. Did it mean they were happy? She wasn't sure, but judging by the way the weyrling flopped down so casually between the two girls, Daeluin assumed her to be at ease. Which helped put her at ease!

Daeluin nodded emphatically, and lifted the sandwich back up to take a bite. She made some sort of affirmative noise around chewing. "Yes, you saw me on the sands," she confirmed Zia's memory. "But, we've never stood together before. It was my first time on the sands, and the first time I've ever lived in a Weyr. Or a Hold. Or a Hall," she went on to explain with a grin and a giggle. With her free hand, Lulu reached back to twirl a long strand of hair around her fingers idly. "I never got to say it, but, congrats on Redfith finding you! She is gorgeous, and seems like an absolute sweetheart," she gushed.

A Wild Firelizard Appears!

User Image

Perhaps Lulu could remember what the color yellow meant. Not for Redfith's sake, but for that of another green, dragonic creature. The firelizard glided down and stumbled over to the trio.

She seemed intimidated by Redfith's presence, but she was more hungry than scared. It was no wonder considering two visible ribs poked from her sides. She was small for a green, so perhaps that was to blame for her unhealthy weight. Too many wild firelizards, not enough food to go around; the runt was pushed out.

Flapping her wings, she dared to near Zia and stared longingly at the sandwich.

Daeluin was both shocked and excited by the new arrival to their lunch party. The small green earned herself a frown; she was much too thin! She must have lots of competition for food out in the wild. Daeluin had heard stories of a booming firelizard population, and this underfed green was proof.

Seeing as how Daeluin was the only one holding any sort of food, she wondered what about Zia had the firelizard so interested. She seemed hungry, so why was she looking at Zia? She wasn't holding any food. Feeling a pang of sympathy for the green, Daeluin did two things. She first ripped off a chunk of her own sandwich and held it out for the green, hoping that the piece she tore off was more roasted wherry than vegetable! The second action by Daeluin was a gesture to the picnic basket, close to both she and Zia. "There's another sandwich in there," she said softly and slowly, not wanting to startle the poor, hungry little thing. "Maybe she's already made up her mind, and she wants you? Grab it, and try and feed her!" Daeluin encouraged, while still waggling the enticing chunk of meat and bread in her own hand.
