Trenches again, Mine? Shouldn't we have been pardoned by now?
"No, since you seemed more than happy to take a snap at the Green yesterday we're working out here again today."
L'pin wiped the underside of his chin with the back of his left hand, uncaring that a smear of dirt had decided to make residence there. Though the air outside may have been chill with the coming of the colder climates that often hugged Telgar the young rider was hot, sweating even, and he debated taking off the shirt that he wore in an effort to alleviate the stress he felt.
The original plan for the pair had been for L'pin and Shamth to take their spots amongst the wings and ride for a day, to learn the new flight patterns, only to run into a slight snag involving a very angry Greenrider. Although L'pin had done his best to call the other man a liar it hadn't blown over very well, thus landing the young man and his Blue another day helping the candidates dig outside to prepare for the cold.
She had it coming.
". . . . Not what I wanted to hear."
It wouldn't be very odd for any of the people outside to see him, L'pin becoming something of a common sight amongst those sent out for menial chores.

Running a hand through his hair, Xanthe flinched as he got his duties for the day spotting the one big one on the list; trench duty which would mean a long, hard day of digging nothing but endless holes.
Sighing he stepped out of the Wyer and looked around taking in the dragons with their riders doing different drills, other candidates working along side of the cavern workers as the day started and glancing at the ledges he took in the few dragons that where already there basking in the early morning sun.
Grabbing the equipment that he would need Xanthe headed towards the trenches, spotting a young man with his blue working along side the others. Blinking he stopped to watch wondering what he did to land him in the trenches… smirking Xanthe recalled stories of a boy and his blue spending a lot of time there maybe that was him.

Anyway, trench work is better than picking numbweed. You remember the time we had to go and do that? Shards, I sure do.
His hands would probably have another blister or two before the day would be over at the pace he worked, L'pin so used to swinging his shovel and pick that he hardly had to wait to shift between the two. It was messy work to do it the way he was, instead of having a partner break the ground for him and he simply shovel, or vise verse, but since no one would really dare to come near him (thanks Shamth!) he had to do it all on his own.
Someone is staring at you, Mine.
L'pin looked up as his dragon bespoke him, the blue having been usually silent this time around. It may have been because the rider was doing most of the talking between the pair, or that no one had bothered them in a while, so L'pin took Shamth's words to mind quickly and started to scan the area.
A bit away from him he noticed a young male candidate looking his way, and he quickly asked Shamth if that was the one he'd been referring to. The answer he received was a yes, leaving the rider to shrug it off.
"He's probably new to the duty system that has you and I out here, so don't worry about him too much. Chances are the others will tell him to leave us alone before he can even get to close."
We shall see.
A deep rumble of doubt echoed in the blue's throat, and he slowly shifted from the laying position he'd been comfortable in to that of a sitting one. It allowed Shamth a better view of this staring boy, and it also gave him a better sense of intimidation.

Watching as the dragon shifted into a laying position, Xanthe realized that he had been staring at the duo and turned away to start on his own work in the trenches. One of the other workers leaned over to him and started to go on about what a trouble maker the boy and his blue was and that it would be in his best interest to stay away from them.
Xanthe just eyed the worker and moved away from him putting him a bit closer to L’pin, he never did put much stock in gossip it always reminded him of a game he played as a child where one person whispers a word to the next and by the time in reached the end of the line it was usually far different then what it was meant to be.
He kept half an eye on the two suddenly curious about them while he worked on his own section. It didn’t take long for the sun to start burning the back of his neck, so pausing he dug out a clothe from his pocket and wrapped in around his neck to help protect it from the blazing sun.

He's getting closer.
"I said to leave him be."
But he's getting closer.
Shamth spread his wings quickly as the boy he'd been watching with sharp eyes seemed to be drawing closer to his despite the warnings a few other candidates apparently had been giving to him. The motion left a cool breeze that blew past L'pin and towards the boy, ruffling his hair should he turn in time to face it.
While L'pin kept telling the Blue that this boy clearly meant no harm, that there was no need to act a fool, Shamth was still wary. He didn't want L'pin to stop his work after all, since the sooner it was done the sooner they could return to the weyr and rest.
"That breeze felt good, thank you Shamth, but...you filled up my hole."
Sure enough a small patch of dirt had been blown back in by the motion, but not enough to really stall anything. L'pin looked around to see if anyone else was affected, and he called out to the youth nearest to him.
"Hey, you okay over there? Get anything in your eyes?"

It didn’t take Xanthe long to get caught up on his digging, he let his mind wonder as his body went through the actions; he pondered everything from what he hoped the cooks would put on for the evening meal, that he had to remember to take his clothing to get washed to wondering about the dragons and their riders. At this though he took another glance over at the two, it wasn’t often that he got to see a dragon up close; the adult dragons kind of freaked him out and the dragonets where often closed up with their riders in lessons.
He saw Shamth as he spread his wings and managed to turn his head away when he blow up the dirt avoiding getting anything in his eyes, shaking his head he reached up to brush the dirt out of his hair when he heard L’pin’s question.
“Yeah, I’m fine. You?”

"I'm always fine."
L'pin chuckled warily, and he reached over to place a hand against the massive Blue once more. Shamth's wings stayed furled, even slightly opening a bit more, but L'pin knew this mostly was just an act. His dragon may have been short with people, but not to this degree of actual upset.
"Did he ruin your work progress, or is everything okay on that end as well?"
He was only asking because he didn't want to have to dig someone else's hole out as an apology though it may be the case.
Why are you asking him? I ruined nothing.
Shamth sounded offended, almost daring to ask L'pin if he thought he'd blown the dirt back in on purpose. The very nerve!
Hush.
