What is a Weyrling?
A "Weyrling" is the name/title for dragonriders with newborn dragons or older dragons that have not made it to a wing yet or gained any other noteworthy rank (Weyrlingmaster, etc.)
A rider of a dragon that is fairly young (OOC: on the baby lines) are called a "Junior Weyrling" (or "Jr. Weyrling"). These Weyrlings have to follow very strict rules, but we'll get to that later.
The rider of a mostly grown or fully grown dragon without rank (OOC: adol/adult lines) are called a "Senior Weyrling" (or "Sr. Weyrling").
When a dragon is fully grown, and their rider obtains a recognized rank, they are then known by that rank. If a greenrider of an adult dragon joins a wing as a wingrider, they are no longer known as a Sr. Weyrling and are, you guessed it, ranked as "Wingrider".

How do I become a Weyrling?
YOU DON'T. YOU SUCK AND YOU'LL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING.
Well, it's pretty easy. First, you have to be a candidate (unless you're one of the lucky folks to Impress from the stands). See the Candidacy guide and all guides with information pertaining to your specific Weyr (High Reaches or Telgar).
Then, you need a dragon. Get to work and wait for a hatching. Maybe you'll get lucky and Impress.
How do I become a Sr. Weyrling?
Once you've got a dragon, it's pretty easy. Any dragon that grows to half/full size (OOC: the adol / adult lines) is automatically a Sr. Weyrling. Most dragons will go on to become Wingleaders, but it is possible for them to stay at this rank forever for multiple reasons (the dragon is unfit for a wing, the rider has pissed off the weyrleaders enough they'll never get higher ranks, etc). Additionally, older riders or riders who can no longer participate in a wing and have no other rank are demoted back down Sr. Weyrling rank.
How do I become a Wingrider?
Most adult Sr. Weyrlings are destined to become Wingriders. They don't have to do much of anything but behave, and OOC, you don't have to do anything at all. The Weyrleader will decide which rider goes to which wing, and once the decisions are finalized, the riders are now ranked as "Wingrider".
How do I become a Searchrider?
With Thread approaching and the Weyrs being understaffed in terms of dragons, searchrider positions are not available full time to anyone but those able to work but incapable of performing at another job. Examples: an older rider who still wants to work, a permanently injured / handicapped rider.
All dragons have the "ability" to search. However, they are not allowed to search for candidates in places not "owned" by the Weyr. A High Reaches dragon is not allowed to Search Igen Weyr, for example.
High Telgar Hold is shared between High Reaches and Telgar Weyr, and thus, both Weyrs are allowed to Search for people there.
All Searches candidates must be cleared by the Candidatemaster or whomever is filling in for their job.
When a Weyr has a clutch on the sands, the opposite Weyr is then forbidden to Search the Hold. Only the Weyr with the clutch may do so until the eggs hatch.
To become a Searchrider, you must be approved by the Weyrwoman/Weyrleader (and the staff OOC). Only five searchriders from each Weyr are allowed at a time. (Any more and the Lord Holder, who is already paying tithe to BOTH Weyrs, would be getting way too pissed for either Weyr's comfort.)
If need be, these searchriders will be rotated so everyone gets a chance.
Current HR Searchriders:
NOT SEARCHING
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Current Telgar Searchriders (Male only):
SEARCHING
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
How do I become a higher rank (such as Wingleader, Weyrlingmaster, etc.)?
Wingleader - Wingleaders will be bronzes or browns in most cases. A blue will be rare, and a green will probably never make it as a wingleader due to their low stamina. Wingleaders are decided by a combination of OOC and IC. OOC, you must be an active player in the game. IC, the rider must be a suitable wingleader and given the title by the Weyrleader. It is possible the Weyrleader will not give someone a Wingleader position who is suitable for it because of a personal, IC agenda. This is no way reflects OOC opinion of the players.
Weyrlingmasters - Weyrlingmasters may be available to players in the future, but it will be the far off future. For now, only NPCs fill in this job.
Weyrleader - A bronzerider's (or rarely brownrider's) dragon must fly the Weyrwoman's. More info in the future.
Weyrwoman - The old Weyrwoman must have died or stepped down, and the new Weyrwoman's gold must have been the first to Rise in the Weyr. More info in the future.

Life for a Jr. Weyrling (Baby Lines)
Congratulations, you're a dragonrider! Say goodbye to much of your social life. Weyrlings have little free time between attending lessons and caring for their dragon, who mostly eat, sleep and demand things. They need to be oiled regularly to keep their hide from peeling, and their dung must be shoveled by the Weyrling as they can not yet go between.
At this age, dragons eat daily, usually more than once. They are fed scraps of meat prepared and given to them by the Weyr's kitchens. The Weyrlings are allowed to take extra food for themselves within reason as well.
Jr. Weyrlings are not allowed to drink or engage in sexual activity at all. This will result in their young dragon becoming distraught and going between, where they get lost and die.
Depending on the dragon, Jr. Weyrlings may be accommodated by asking for assistance from candidates or workers. However, they themselves are still subject to chores similar to when they themselves were a candidate/worker. Free time may be used in any way the rider likes within the rules of Weyrlinghood.
Weyrlings can not be kicked out of a Weyr (unless their actions result in the death of their dragon in which case they are no longer really Weyrlings anyway), but they are expected to be respect to the higher ups. If not, their will be consequences, and these can range from something minor like latrine duty to never making it past Sr. Weyrling rank if they make the wrong people made.
Jr. Weyrlings live in what is called the "Weyrling Barracks" with the exception of goldriders; this is one giant room. There is a bed with hay for the dragons, and below it a bed for the rider. Weyrlings are assigned a certain "bunk". For goldriders, they are given an entire room to themselves that is linked to the larger one, but similar in nature to a weyr. They have a more extravagant bed and other luxuries other colors do not get. There are three goldrider rooms in total.
Life for a Sr. Weyrling (Adol Lines)
Dragons are now six months of age and are allowed to begin practicing gliding, and soon flying. (Dragons can fly before this, but are not allowed to due to risk of damaging muscles.)
Sr. Weyrlings are a bit more individualist than their Jr. Weyrling counterparts, because it depends on their dragon if they are allowed to drink or engage in sexual activity. Riders are expected to respect their dragons' wishes. In short, no means no.
Weyrling lessons continue for six more months.
At this age, Sr. Weyrlings are moved out of the barracks and into their own personal weyrs. They may share these with a single roommate or live with their dragon. A weyr contains a bed, a desk, personal belongs and a ledge for the dragon(s) to sleep.
Life for a Sr. Weyrling (Adult Lines)
Although not traditionally the age they are "set free", High Reaches and Telgar needs all the help they can get, and thus dragons are released into the world free of Weyrling lessons and restricts by one turn of age. Greens may rise at this age, and males may chase her; however, golds will not rise until they sexually mature at two turns.
What happens from here on out depends on the rider. They may go on to be a wingrider, impress the Weyrleader enough to get ranked higher or a number of other things.

The Tentative Weyrling Program
Lesson 1 Time Lasted: Months 1-2 Topic: Getting to Know Your Dragon You Should Know: Basic dragon care including how to properly bathe and oil your dragon, how much to feed your dragon; the rules of the Weyr (no drinking, no sex, and do not stray too far from your dragon); regulation hair cuts may or may not be done in this lesson Dragons Notes: Not used to being separated from their bondeds and will become distressed if they are left alone for too long; cannot hunt for themselves; cannot go Between; cannot fly; need lots of babying
Lesson 2 Time Lasted: Months 3-4 Topic: Desk Work/Beginning of Preparation for Flight (Ground work) You Should Know: Basic knowledge of Weyr history, all Weyrlings will be caught up on Harper-taught skills (reading, writing, arithmetic); physical "games" or sorts will begin for this period (tag, swimming, tug of war, relay, etc) to prepare for flight; ground drills Dragon Notes: Dragons are more independent and more aware of things besides Theirs; other lesson 1 notes still apply
Lesson 3: Time Lasted: Months 5-6 Topic: Ground Drills/Strap making You Should Know: Flight formations with practice on the ground as well as learning in the classroom; strap making and maintenance of leather; self defence (?); classroom lectures on riding gear and its maintenance Dragon Notes: Dragons are larger now and more tolerant (some of them XD); should be exercising often in order to prepare themselves for flight; lessons 1 notes still apply
Lesson 4: Time Lasted: Months 7-9 Topic: Flight (Solo glides)/Beginning to Hunt You Should Know: Knowledge of mating flights and their repercussions; dragons can begin to practice their gliding (without a rider on their back) and are expected to practice in their spare time; strap making continues; dragons may learn to hunt by themselves or be taught by an older dragon Dragon Notes: Lineart change (Sr. weyrling lines)! Dragons are now large enough to hunt for themselves, whether on the ground or with the help of short glides; they are not, however, large enough to carry passengers; the no sex rule has been lifted but it is not a free for all! Some dragons are more sensitive than others, so it is always expected that the rider will respect his or her dragon; riders are allowed to drink but discouraged from getting drunk
Lesson 5: Time Lasted: Month 10-12 Topic: Firestone and Flaming/Manned Flights You Should Know: Manned flights are now possible; riders will receive their own set of riding gear; chewing firestone to produce a flame (only under the supervision of the Weyrlingmaster!); flaming can be practiced in class on bits of rope; there will be in class lectures about firestone and flaming as well as multiple exposures to the firestone to show the Weyrlingmaster that the rider can pick good stone for his/her dragon; riding straps are now extremely important Dragon Notes: Weyrlings now have access to their own weyrs; can fly for short distances while carrying their rider; can fly on their own for longer distances; same rules about alcohol/relationships as lesson 4
Lesson 6: Time Lasted: Month 13-15 Topic: Going Between/Flight Formations You Should Know: Ground drills now apply to the air; practicing of flight formations and wing drills; firestone practice continues; dragons are taught how to jump Between, generally only from the bowl to the edge of the beach or to beyond the Star Stones; going Between will be practiced frequently to ensure that the riders are capable Dragon Notes: Weyrlings have more freedom, however they may not leave the Weyr without permission
Lesson 7: Time Lasted: Month 16-17 Topic: Flight Formations/Graduation You Should Know: Very practiced in formations as well as going Between while in formation; know how to make and maintain riding straps; going Between is practiced frequently by sending the pairs out on small deliveries and trips; nearly all training is done on the wing to ensure that the riders are ready for Threadfall; dragon and rider pairs are fully fledged Wingriders after their graduation and will be assigned a wing. Dragon Notes: Lineart change (adult lines)! Dragons are pretty well fully grown
