Shani was not at home, she couldn't stay at home anymore. She had been living a quiet and sad life since the realization that Vikasini was actually gone. Her friend had confirmed it, Miki had escaped from a group of males that had taken Vika, their other friend and some other girls from the pride. It was terrifying news. It was scary that something like that could happen at all let alone so near home, and then there was the mystery of what happened to the girls when they were taken, what happened to Vikasini. Shani had wanted to be useful, to go and help look for them, but she wasn't able to leave. Enzi and Anya had convinced her to stay home but that left her with nothing to do but worry and think. She'd lost one of them, one of her daughters, her niece. One of the cubs that had been entrusted to her. What would her mother think if she was here? More seriously, what would Ghali think when she came home? If she came home. What if something happened to those who did go looking for her? Kubwa and Tetemeko had gone, even Wahabu had volunteered when he found out. He was Vika's cousin, had been close to her father, he wanted to help. And here was Shani, her aunt-mother and unable to really do anything but sit at home and worry. The guilt was getting to her, so she had gone off for a walk. Her steps were hurried and her path uncertain, she didn't know where she was going exactly. She just couldn't stay at the den.

Mahokha was usually oblivious to anything but what was going on around him, or happening directly to him. The only thing that mattered at the moment was his own dissatisfaction with his family and the realization that he would never be as loved as his sister, or his mother. It was almost as if their family had created a strange, backwards little world inside of the Pridelands where no one else noticed.

A sigh of frustration tore out of his maw, his bright eyes shutting as he shook his head and sent his blond mane flying. He had every right to be loved and treated with just as much respect as the girls, especially him. He had tried so hard to get his mother's attention his whole life, and for what?

He groaned softly beneath his breath, pushing himself up to his feet. He wouldn't stay here and be patronized by them any longer. If they wouldn't appreciate him, if this pride wouldn't recognize what was going on around them, then he would just leave. However, the moment he stepped out, a blur of brown happened to be walking by, and he bumped (more like collided) right into it. In a defensive motion, he stepped backwards, his mouth already in a scowl. "Watch it," he grunted, even without looking up from examining himself.

Too occupied with her own worries and unclear decision to wander away from home as quickly as she could, she was caught entirely off guard when she suddenly struck another lion. With a yelp of surprise, she backed off very quickly and looked, wide-eyed, to the lion that had run into her.

"I'm sorry," she responded quickly, flustered by the sudden run-in with someone. Her immediate thought was to the strange males that had taken Vikasini, but of course she was not outside the pride's lands yet and she was just being paranoid. Still, the surprise and the quickly suppressed thought was enough to have looking on with wide eyes.

"I didn't see you," she murmured. Shani started looking a little more calm, more normal as she calmed down from the shock. She didn't look entirely calm or exactly cheerful but it was a definite improvement. She didn't recognize the lion before her, she thought, but then there were just so many lions around the Pridelands.

His initial shock wore away and his irritation began to fade as he realized that she didn't really deserve him taking his anger out on her. She couldn't have known he was about to walk out, and although he wasn't in the best of moods, he certainly had no reason to treat her as if she were the cause of his anger - his mother, or his sister.

"No, it's alright," he corrected himself, his voice still a little strained with his irritation, although now it seemed to be more towards himself than her. He frowned and shook his head. "I'm sorry for running into you, I should have looked where I was going." For truthfully, he was the one barreling into her in his eagerness to finally make good on his decision of leaving.

As he glanced up at her, however, he noticed that she seemed a little.. off. Had his running into her really frightened her that badly? His brows drew down into a small 'v' shape and his frown deepened. "Are you alright?" He didn't know her name, nor could he recall seeing her, but that didn't mean much in these lands.

Shani smiled at him when he apologized, but it was difficult to maintain. She was surprised when he asked if she was alright, not realizing just how transparent she was being- but that's what it was to be a mother, wasn't it? She was worried and she couldn't imagine she would stop worrying until Vikasini was safe at home once again.

"I- I'll manage," she replied, trying to smile again. It wasn't a lie, it was an indication that she wasn't alright but was trying to deal with it. There was no point asking for help, for any information. Vikasini was not hiding from her family in the pridelands, she was somewhere else, somewhere far away. With nothing else to say and the distraction of running into someone else easily overcome, she turned to continue on her way.

"You're sure? I'm not really asking for my benefit, you know." He followed her with her eyes as she turned to leave, finding that despite trying to be nice, having his attempt to be so thrown in his face left a rather sour taste in his mouth. His words became a little edgier and the irritation seeped back in to not only them, but the look on his face and the stance of his body as well.

He sat down where he had been standing, trying to resist the urge to roll his eyes at what he would probably later simply pass off as another uppity Pridelander female, and began to check himself over for any stray grass or leaves sticking to his fur. The only residual issue with growing up with a female dominant family was that he was rather meticulous about his appearance - even now that he wanted nothing to do with them.

As she stepped away, she heard his words and she could almost feel his eyes roll. Even though they actually didn't. She was a mother, she could recognize certain tones, certain behaviors.. she felt another twinge of guilt added to her conscience and she stopped moving away. She didn't need to be rude, he had been rude at first but he had been a little kinder. She sighed and turned back around.

"I'm sorry," she apologized again, hesitating before continuing with some excuse for her behavior, "My daughter- she's missing, I'm worried. That's no reason to be rude, though, I'm sorry."

She offered a weak smile again.

He sighed as she turned around and spoke again, her words washing over him and effectively cleaning away every last bit of arrogance and irritation from his body, only to leave behind a hollow feeling of guilt. He paused with one paw raised for cleaning, bright eyes peering over it and up at her as he tried to make himself feel a little more confident speaking with her.

How was he supposed to know that the reason she was barreling through the pride had something to do with a kidnapped daughter? He wasn't psychic. Still, no amount of telling himself that it was okay to be an a*****e when he was ignorant made him feel like he truly allowed.

"No, no," he finally muttered, squinting his eyes up to look at the sun in an effort to avoid eye contact with her, "that's a perfectly fine reason to be rude." More reason than he usually had for being so, as far as he was concerned. He sighed and pushed himself back up to his feet, no longer concerned with his appearance for the time being. "I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be saying to that though," his shoulders rose and fell in a shrugging motion, his tail whipping behind him uncertainly, "I mean, do you need help or something?" Not that he wanted to spend the day, or more than a day, helping some stranger find a cub he didn't give a s**t about - but he did feel bad now for being such a jackass.

Shani was feeling a bit ridiculous, watching the male try to sort through what she had just said and how it changed perceptions. Truthfully, it wasn't a good excuse. She shouldn't even have been out and about, telling strangers anything. Her family wasn't the only one with a missing daughter.. but still, she had felt bad. She had been so hard on Enzi for being awkward with others and in reality, she as just as bad or worse off than he was. It certainly wasn't helping to improve her mood.

"No, no, I'm sorry," she apologized again, "I shouldn't have said anything. Family is looking for her, but I can't sit still. I'll just go now."

Bail. It was a good idea. She wouldn't necessarily be proud of it but she didn't have anybody to prove herself to, nobody harassing her to be more social. She could decide for herself.
