Ladies and gentlemen... or just good old punks:
Im trying to write a kickass horror story, with a bit of allan poe and lovecraft influence, and maybe a little of baudelaire, also, he. The thing is i need to learn more of the way people lived back then, and specially strange stories that somehow could be the common gossip (in europe mostly).
So, if anyone knows something interesting, like the name of a website with plenty historical info, ocultism "101", classic horror, books (ive been reading a few from the gutemberg project), movies, whatever, please be my guest, and post all the good stuff. And also, if you know or have the pic of a map of europe between 1800-1900, i would appreciate if you could pst it (in big size, so i can look all those small countries, and towns)
smile I can recommend some useful reference works from my personal library:
Descriptionary--this is an excellent "reverse dictionary", if you will, with a collection of entries divided by topics such as culture, mythology, architecture, medicine, and so forth. If you have a rough idea of what you're looking for, but not what it's called, a brief skim through the different entries (alphabetized within each category) will put you on the right track.
Encyclopedia Cthulhiana--if you're a Lovecraft fan (like me) or want inspirations from his weird works, you definitely want a copy of this useful book. It covers everything from Azathoth to Clark Ashton Smith, both within the Mythos and the various writers who helped contribute to it. Need to know which version of the Necronomicon had all the good parts cut out? (Answer: Golden Goblin Press edition), or what part Robert E. Howard played in Lovecraft's writings? (He was a penpal of HP's, and wrote several stories in the Mythos himself, including one that could be considered a hybrid of Conan and Cthulhu!)
How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy by Orson Scott Card--there are two books with the same title; the one by Card, author of
Ender's Game and about a hundred other novels, is the one you want. (The other version, written by some guy named Crawford Killian, is worthless; trust me, I've read both versions.)
I have a number of others in my own reference collection, but I'd have to go dig them up before I can give you titles. If anyone wants the complete list, feel free to PM me, nyao!
