Ban'ma was spending a relaxing day down by the watering hole. Ever since she'd spent that wonderful time with Achal, she couldn't find a good reason to leave. The area was lush with vegetation and shady trees with prey as wide as the eye could see. It was comforting to feel the breeze drift over her caucassian fur. She could spend an eternity here.

But then...Sighing, Ban'ma rolled over onto her back in the tall grasses and stared at the sky. Clouds, like the one's on Achal. Why was she so dead set on him? It wasn't like there wasn't other lions in the world. Bigger, better lions with fluffier manes and crowns. She could even mate a king! But then, what would Achal do?

Mingmei smoothed her ears back in the reflection of the watering hole. She dipped one paw back into the water to scrub her face clean. Her new burrow looked wonderful and seeing as it was at the base of a big tree, she could always find it. That was one thing about living here that bothered her. The grasses were too tall and it was so busy; too many scents jumbled up her senses and made it hard to find home again.

Once satisfied in her appearance, the air grabbed her load of reed stalks in her mouth and scuttled on home. The sun was going to set soon, plunging the world into darkness. Predators from way and wide would wake up with growling tummies, looking for stupid prey beasts to snair.

She'd rather not be dinner today, thank you very much.

So close to her tree the foliage was pressed down and when she popped through she found out why. A lioness!

Ban'ma raised her head lazily, lethargic eyes widening in a flash. "What kind of stupid hare are you?" She blurted out, rolling over onto her side to get a better look at the frozen creature. It was cute, regardless of it's gender. The patterns on it's fur were some kind of pretty. "Shug, if I were anyone else, you'd be in my belly right now."

Still, the lioness wasn't hungry and wasn't all that excited anyone. She was whiny and moody, damn it! Where was Achal? He was supposed to be having fun with her and talking about the weather like real boys. Ban'ma sighed and flopped back down in her spot, a cloud of ragweed floating up around her like snow. "Just take your food and go on. I'm in no mood to kill you." When the hare made no move, she shoved it away with her hind leg. "Get!"

"Not in the mood for a meal? I think the question is, what kind of lion are you?" Mei asked increigously(sp). She bent over to scoop her stalks back up, but something about this girl tugged at her heart strings. The hare steeled up her courage, dropped her food by the lionesses' tail and climbed up her leg to sit on her stomach. It wouldn't hurt to stick around just to hear the story on this one.

"Come on, buck up. Life can't be that hard." She shook the lionesses' chest with her forepaws and put on a comforting smile, though her ears were still pulled back. "A pretty little thing like you shouldn't be mopin' around. Only ugly girls do that." She grinned.

Ban'ma laughed, the faintest trace of a sparkle in her eyes. With her mane over her right eye and the 'mascara' around her eyes, she really did look like an uptown girl. "Ya, really ugly girl with big heads and fat legs." She scooted back so that her head could rest on a tree root and she could have a better look at Mei. "Say, why are you trying to cheer me up, anyway? First you insulted me and now your sitting on my tum. Surely you know that at any moment I can swoop down and gobble you up."

But she wouldn't and she knew it. This was the first person since Achal that she'd talked to and she didn't want to ******** it up.

Mei leaned back in surprise. "Well...I-I wa-was hoping that..." That if I made you happy you wouldn't eat me? The hare swallowed a lump in her throat and twirled her paws around each other nervously. The lioness was still staring at her wit those big, blue eyes. Those big, sad, lonely eyes. And Mei knew. "I wanted to help you. Everyone needs a friend, right?" She smiled comfortingly and settled back, her little tail flicking.

Her heart couldn't have been filled with more love if she had asked for it. Ban'ma's eyes filled with tears, the physical manifestation of all she'd been through as she scooped the hare up in her paws and held her close to her chest. "Oh, thank you, thank you so much!" She bawled, squeezing the poor creature tight. "I was alright- alright before he left and now it's like I have a hole in my chest." She hiccuped and looked down at Mei, her lip quivering. "It's the same as when my family died. I don't have anyone and everyone that meant something to me is gone. But he's not really gone, is he? You don't think he's dead? Please, tell me he's not dead!"

"WOH!" Mingmei pulled out of the deadly embrace and inhaled deeply, holding one paw out to keep the lioness away. That was way too much emotion all at once. She thought she'd be choked to death! "Just calm down and breath. I'm sure he's fine. Was he injured or sick when he left?" She waited for Ban'ma to shake her head, her own body rising and falling as the lioness took deep breaths. "There, see? He's fine. The boy's probably kicking it up somewhere in the savannah."

"Kicking it up?" Her voice broke and another flood of tears flowed out. "So, what does that mean? That he's having fun with other lionesses and hasn't thought about me at all?" Ban'ma felt like her heart was breaking for the lion she'd barely known. She tossed her head to the side dramatically, closing her eyes tight to the tears. "He's probably back with his family. He had one, you know. An adopted daughter and some sisters. Where the hell does that leave me?"

Mingmei was starting to believe that this lioness was less in emotional distress and more in denial for head trauma. Awkwardly, she looked around and noticed her family of hares staring at her, some with open mouths and others with buldging eyes. What kind of prey beast consoled a predator? "The stupid kind," she murmured, patting the woman's shoulder. "There, there. Come with me back to my den and I'll get you all fixed up. We'll find you...some place to sleep and when your rested up, you can go hunt. Far away. And not on the neighbors."

Ban'ma nodded and stood up, following the hares lead as the two made their way around the tree . It was a hard squeeze, but she managed to climb the tree, sleeping on a branch just above the entrance to Mingmei's home, happy for her new bff and ready for the new day.
