Okay, so in the last thread we got most of the character introductions out of the way. That was what I was aiming for.

So now, I'm starting a new thread, where we can get a basic plotline rolling.

So, without further ado...

Last time, on X-Men Evolution...

We were introduced to people both new and old, and one of them decided to pay an uninvited visit to the Institute. A week has passes since this incursion, and the staff is still a bit on edge...

Meanwhile, the members of the Brotherhood were plotting to cause some mischief. What kind of trouble are they going to get up to?

Find out on the next season of X-Men: Evolution!

X-23 had lain low for a few days as the mansion's security had gone up after her visit. As it turned out, the students she'd startled had decided to tell their teachers that they'd heard something. And of all the possible choices, it had been Weapon X that they'd sent to try and find her. Luckily, she'd covered her trail once she'd come to herself, and he hadn't been able to track her. For two days she had argued with herself over whether she should attack him as he was searching for her, or not, but in the end, she decided to bide her time and watch him work. All in all, it had been quite informative, for though she'd been compared to the man all her life, she had never seen him in action. He was indeed as formidable a hunter as she was and she had to keep on the move in order to elude him. If she didn't hate him so very much, she might have come to respect him after those hours of observation, but she did hate him, and it bugged her that they were as similar as she'd always been told.

After a few days he'd stopped his search and as the week passed things at the mansion calmed down a bit. From what few tidbits she could gather, it seemed as if the teachers were still a little on edge, but since it had been a week with no sign of her, they were beginning to relax. It was almost time for another look around, and hopefully, this time she'd be the only one awake in the small hours of the morning.

******

Rogue's week had been rather busy. She'd had to show a couple of the new kids around the school and the mansion, she'd had three tests, a pop quiz in biology, and as if that wasn't enough, Logan had decided that the intruder meant more training sessions. Granted, the upside to the intruder was that Mr. McCoy had conducted the sessions at the beginning of the week while Logan was out searching, but still, it wasn't fun having training every day and sometimes twice a day for a week instead of the usual every other day schedule. Things were getting back to normal now and the week ahead looked to be no big deal, for which Rogue was thankful.

It was lunchtime and Rogue was on her way to the cafeteria. She was starving because she'd skipped breakfast in order to sleep a little extra. She passed her locker and remembered that she needed to re-read her Shakespearean Sonnets for English because she hadn't been able to concentrate when she'd originally read them. 'Stupid horror flick,' she thought to herself as she remembered the reason for her lack of concentration. She sighed as she pulled the book out of her locker, shut it, and continued to lunch.

Fortunately, Maxis's unique biology meant that he wasn't quite as wiped out as Rogue following the few days of intense training sessions. That wasn't to say that he wasn't tired, but he was able to recover faster than most. And at least he found the physical activity to be fun. It was the normal classes that seemed to tire him out the most. Something about sitting in a classroom for a few hours at a time tended to leave him feeling physically drained. "Ugh... Class over... lunch time... lunch good," he mumbled to himself, dragging his half-asleep form to his locker. Now that he was out of the classroom and moving about a bit, he began to feel a little bit better. Getting something to eat would probably revive him the rest of the way.

He grumbled when he opened his locker to find that he'd forgotten his lunch back at the mansion. This would mean that he'd have to get something from the cafeteria. Not that the food was terrible bad, but it wasn't terribly good, either. It was simply terrible mediocre. Ah, well. What is there to be done? he thought to himself, as he shut his locker once more. Off to the cafeteria, then.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abraham, meanwhile, wasn't feeling quite as drained from his classes. Mostly because he was about two weeks ahead of the rest of the class, and so had pretty much a free period before lunch. What he was, was terribly hungry. Maybe as a result of overtaxing his powers a bit during the training sessions, Abe's appetite seemed to have double in the past few days. And once class let out, it took nearly all of his self-control to keep from simply 'streaming his way to the cafeteria. Unfortunately, he would have to settle for moving along with the rest of the crowd, which to him, seemed like it was moving at a snail's pace.

"Oh, come on... I'm gonna start eating you guys if you don't speed it up a bit!" he exclaimed, struggling to get past the gaggle of people that always seemed to block the halls right after class let out. Finally, the herd started to thin out, allowing Abe to move at more than a crawl. He passed a couple familiar faces on his way, sending greetings to all. "Hey, Max," he said, passing by his reptillian comrade, whose normally scaly appearance was currently being concealed by an image inducer, essentially a portable hologram generator. Maxis nodded and waved lightly in response. Man, that kid needs to work on his people skills, Abe thought to himself, as he continued on to the cafeteria.

At the wall beside the gate of the X-Mansion, a harmless-looking, albeit huge spider crawled innocently atop the structure, pausing momentarily before turning toward the outside of the wall and wriggling its two front legs in a strange manner. Immediately a pale hand reached up and grabbed the top of the wall, and with a final heave, Owen hoisted himself atop the wall in an undignified scramble. Smiling at the spider, he lowered his hand and waited while the tiny conspirator climbed up his arm and into his hair before once again lowering himself to the ground on the inside of the wall.

The past several days had eaten at him as he had gone about his routine; stealing the occasional snack from gas stations, hiding from strangers and policemen when they noticed him breaking their silly rules, and avoiding people in general as he wandered around the church like the ghost that so many thought him to be. But the more he had thought about it, the more he had wished that he had gone ahead and taken a look at the enormous house, just a quick look inside the windows, if only to remember what could have been. Last night, he had decided that on the morrow he would make another attempt. His weaver friend was less than enthusiastic, but had come anyway to ensure that he would not be hurt in his foolish human endeavor.

Thus was he here now, creeping along the wall at first, and then from tree to tree, trying his best to remain out of sight to anyone that might be watching from the windows as the house steadily became nearer. Unfortunately, one thing he had failed to learn about in all his time spent stealing things from stores and stations (and the main reason he was discovered so often) was that he was completely unaware of the existence of the small cameras hidden behind reflective surfaces in the stores, their single eye peering down every aisle. Likewise he failed to notice that as he crept along in what he thought was a stealthy manner, he paid no attention to the small boxes with single eyes that were mounted in various places on the mansion and on the grounds, several slowly turning to follow him. As far as he knew, nobody knew that he was here, and if his luck held, he would leave the same way, and no one would be the wiser.

Kira walked through the new hallways of the new school she had been enrolled in. Since her family had done a lot of hopping around she was used to being the new kid and had quickly made a few acquientences with some of the other students, but no one she felt terribly relaxed with this soon. She made it to her locker before lunch and put her books away, almost forgetting the assignments she needed to catch up with the rest of her class along with her bagged lunch.

She managed to make it to the cafeteria, plop down in one of the circular tables, open her homework, and pull out a sandwich before indulging in a little self pity. My body hurts She streched herself as best she could, but the last week under Mr. Logan and Dr. McCoy had not been kind. It wasn't that she was out of shape, she just didn't have any muscle, at all. Her head also throbbed dully as it had for the past week. She had never used her powers so consistently before, though she had been promised that the longer she worked with them, the better her head would feel. "I wonder if anyone else is around..." She mummled before turning back to the folder of worksheets in front of her.

"Young man, there are easier ways to get to into the grounds."

To Owen, it would have seemed that the voice was coming from just beside him, though it would be impossible to tell which side it was, and even if he were to look, he would find no-one else there. It was the telepathic voice of one Charles Xavier, the headmaster of the institute whose grounds the young mutant was currently venturing across. Of course, the mansion itself had cameras and other security equipment scattered about the grounds, which is how Xavier was able to so easily detect the boy. Not that his powers couldn't have detected him anyways, but Xavier wasn't really in the habit of peeking into people's minds without permission. Communication was fine, but anything further, and Xavier was reluctant to do so.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once he'd finally made his way to the cafeteria, Maxis scanned the room for a familiar face or two. He was still a bit uneasy around strangers, and he wasn't about to go sit at a random table and have to endure the stares that would follow. As another side-effect of his uneasiness, most of the student body, or at least the "popular" section, regarded Maxis as "that weird kid" and thus, the majority of the populace followed suit. Which suited him just fine, as it meant he wouldn't be forced to talk to anyone.

Pretty much the only friends he had were the people from Xavier's, and that was more because he pretty much lived with most of 'em. As his eyes scanned the room, he finally located a familiar face. "Hey, Kira. You mind if I sit with you?" he asked as he walked over to the table that she'd spread some of her school things on. He paused, waiting for a response before he'd set his hoody or something down on the seat, to "reserve" it before going to get his food.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abe, on the other hand, had much more freedom with where he was able to sit. Maybe as a result of his considerably more outgoing personality, Abraham was welcomed into most social circles with open arms. He was just atheletic enough to fit in with the sports groups, and just smart enough to mingle with the "nerds". In the end, though, he just ended up searching for someone else from Xavier's. He just felt more at home with these people, probably for a reason similar to Maxis, that being that he lived with most of 'em.

Kira looked up from her work and smiled when Maxis showed up. "Please do. I don't know if I can process much more gossip today. I only just got here and already I know the top 25 guys and girls to date, as well as all the 'creepers' to avoid." She laughed to herself, happy to be around a friendly face.

She turned her attention back to her worksheets to let Maxis grab some food, and worked on a trickey geometry proof. She munched on her sandwich and gazed around the room. A few of the girls in her class gave her odd looks at her choice of lunchmate and didn't try to hide them. She locked eyes and waved her fingers with a huge smile. Yep, no matter where you go, schools never change, she thought happily.

When Rogue finally made it to the cafeteria, she glanced around, and found a table that hadn't been taken yet. She plunked her lunch and her textbook on the table and took a seat. Opening the book to the section on sonnets, she began reading. Absentmindedly, she pulled out a PB and J sandwich and ate as she read. For once, she was lucky and the assigned sonnets weren't too difficult to make sense of. This allowed her to only need to go over them once, instead of three or four times, like she did with some of them.

Her lack of company didn't bother her, she was far to used to it to care. Occasionally, she'd sit with Kurt, or Maxis, or any number of the others, but for the most part she kept to herself while at school. A friend would have been nice, but she was one of the only, quote, unquote, goths, at the school, and she didn't always get along with the others. It was one of the unfortunate side effects of going to a small school like Bayville high.

The voice seemed to come from just beside him, making Owen start and causing a hiss of irritation from the small passenger nestled inside his hair. He looked right and left rapidly, but saw no one. Rather than put his mind at ease, he felt himself on the verge of panic; he had definitely heard someone, but how had they been able to sneak up to him, speak to him, and then vanish so completely? Had it been a ghost? Was this place haunted? Or was there something even more sinister lurking on the grounds of this place?

Stepping back from where he had been previously going, he crouched down under a tree and hugged his knees to his chest, listening to his heart as it slowly began to resume a normal rhythm. What ails you? came a sizzling hiss from the top of his left ear. Barely moving his lips, Owen hissed in reply, "I heard someone; did you see anything?" Thr response was clearly hinted with confusion. No one was heard, no one was there. Only us. Owen sighed in frustration; he believed his friend, but he had most definitely heard something. He seriously doubted he could have imagined a voice referring to him as 'young man'. He had always been called much more unsavory things in the past.

The thought of a ghost came back to his mind, and he remembered just then that so many thought that was precisely what he was; perhaps that was why he alone had heard the voice. Then again..... Shaking his head in irritation, Owen remained hunched beneath the tree, keeping his eyes open and slowly moving back and forth, looking for any sign of vapor or mist or anything at all that would indicate the presence of the speaker, and speaking quietly rather than calling, remembering at least that he was an intruder. "H-hello? Are you a ghost?"

"I assure you, I am no ghost, specter or apparition. My name is Charles Xavier, the proprieter and headmaster of this institute," Xavier explained to the understandably bewhildered youth. "And if you wanted to explore the grounds, all you had to do was go to the front gate," he added, a slight "chuckle" to the telepathic message.

"But, since you're already here, do feel free to come in, if you wish. I'll send someone to the front door to meet you, if you so desire.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abraham continued to scan the room for a seat, before spotting Rogue sitting off by herself. "Hey, Rogue! Mind if I sit here?" he asked, sidling up to the table, and grinning his usual wide grin.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Thanks," Maxis replied, setting down his hoodie on the seat. "I'll be right back, I'm just gonna go get some food," he added, moving across the cafeteria towards the lunch counter. The line-up was starting to thin out a bit, which was fine for him, because it meant he wouldn't have to wait very long for his lunch.

Owen stood perfectly still, still not entirely sure if the voice was telling the truth. If this Charles Xavier wasn't a ghost, then how was he doing this, speaking to him? It wasn't aloud, or Weaver would have heard it too instead of sitting nonplussed on his head. He still wasn't entirely sure just where he was; apparently this wasn't a house after all. An institute, Mister Xavier had said. To him that meant that the place must be veritably swarming with people, like a decorative anthill.

He found himself grinning inwardly at the thought of going through the front gate like a regular person, unaware that Charles could hear his thoughts as well as if he spoke them aloud. Right, the front gate, like I know somebody here. Then I guess you'd like me to just go up to the door and ASK for something to eat or to look at all your nice stuff. Get real, man.

His inward smile vanished at the offer to actually come inside. Didn't this guy see who he was? His type didn't just walk into places like this like they belonged! He heard a small sound from his hair, the tone noticably dry. What does Imaginary Human say to you now? Too honestly surprised to insist that he wasn't imagining Charles, he replied right away. "He wants me to come to the door. Ow!" He felt a tiny leg p***k his scalp. You are mad. If you go, they will call shield-men! To his small friend, shield-men were police; she had seen the small sheilds they held aloft when they announced themselves, though she had remarked to Owen before that she saw little use for such puny armor in comparison to their hulking frames.

"Don't worry," Owen hissed back, "I know what I'm doing. Remember what we can do. And this place is so big; if anything happens, we can hide anywhere in there." And if they catch you first? came the less-than-convinced reply. For an answer, Owen looked down at his wrists, which were criss-crossed by scars, one thick one wrapping itself all the way around; souvenirs from a time where he had been cuffed by a cop after being caught lifting a wallet; he had rubbed his wrists until they had bled, using the slickness to slip out. So much blood....but he had survived. He always did. "It'll be alright," Owen said, and he carefully got up from his hiding place and walked toward the door to the mansion, peering about as though expecting to be jumped every time he passed a tree or a bush.

Rogue was reading through her last sonnet, when a familiar voice hailed her. She looked up to find Abe asking if he could sit. "You can if ya want, it's still a free country ain't it?" she asked, rhetorically. Her answer might have been a little sarcastic, but sarcasm was a habit she'd long since formed, and it served it's purpose. As things stood, she didn't mind his company, and if she had she'd have told him he wasn't welcome.

Rogue turned back to her book just long enough to finish the sonnet. Her reading for English now accomplished, she shut the book and placed it in her bag. She then turned her attention to Abe, and her half eaten sandwich. "So. What brings you to my corner of the cafeteria? You need to catch up on your sonnets too?"

"Nah, I'm good. I just figured you could use some company, sitting out here all by your lonesome," Abe replied, sitting down across from her. "So, which one were you looking over?" he asked, obviously talking about the sonnets that Rogue had just been perusing.

--------------------------------------------------------------

"Actually, I WOULD like you to simply go up to the door and ask for something to eat, if you're hungry," Charles replied to the last "comment". "I've sent someone to meet you at the door. All you have to do is knock," he added, smiling kindly even though he knew Owen wouldn't be able to see it.

Rogue gave Abe a wry grin at his answer. "Well, then thanks I guess. It's not every day people ask to join me. Usually it's the other way around if anything." She ducked her head and took a hasty bite out of her sandwich. It wasn't every day that she admitted things like that either, truth be told. And she had to acknowledge that it was nice to have someone sitting with her of their own volition for once. Not that the other Xavier kids disliked her company or anything like that, they were all rather nice, but it always made her feel a little better when things like this happened. It somehow reaffirmed that she was part of the gang, and outward attitude aside, she rather liked the feeling of belonging.

Rogue had just taken yet another bite, when Abe asked which Sonnet she'd been looking at. She grimaced apologetically and hastily swallowed her food. "Um, well the assignment was for 75-79, but you caught me on the last one. It's all about Shakespeare's muse and how other poets have been called upon to write about the muse instead of just him and how they don't do the muse justice by inventing things, and that the muse should be the one thanked instead of the one doing the thanking. Normal Shakespeare, drama."

((Yes! LIVE! 8D))

What the Hell-? Owen blinked and stopped in his tracks, eyes wide. What now? came the dry hiss from deep within his white hair. Barely hissing out of the corner of his mouth, Owen replied, "This guy just....read my mind or something." He heard a sound like tiny crackling leaves; Weaver's laughter. You are just jumpy. Humans do not read minds; they only pretend.

Far from being convinced, Owen nodded anyway. "Well, I suppose it don't matter, does it? But he actually encouraged me to go up and ask for something to eat at the door." More hissy laughter, and Owen even smiled a little. "This guy must never have been outside here." His smile faded a little. "But he said he sent someone to the door; there's no turning back now, unless we want to be chased, and then caught trying to scale a wall." He felt Weaver shift her tiny body uncomfortably in his hair. "Hey, don't worry; I'll be careful. And I have you with me, after all. Just hide as deep as you can in my hair and only come out when it starts looking bad, okay?" Hearing Weaver's small sound of reluctant compliance, Owen steeled himself and walked up to the door, still casting uneasy glances to the right and left, wary of any trickery or shadowy figures lurking in the bushes.

It felt like a year had passed before he reached the door, and even then he spent what seemed like forever staring up at the intimidating slabs of wood. Finally he reached out his hand and ventured a timid knock, half-hoping that no one would answer and he could make a beeline back to the wall and away from this place with the strange man who could read his mind.
