Does drop tuning seem like away to get around having real talent? Or do you think it's just a nice trick on occasion?

It makes it easier when playing fast riffs, and if you do alot of picking instead of strumming. Plus it can get you lower notes than just an E.
I like downtuning every once in a while. Nothing wrong with it.

Ever try drop G? I did that on my 4 string (bass) once, GADG. Only thing crazier was (on the same bass) DGAE as opposed to EADG. Fun times. I'm often too lazy to do anything but drop D or some random tuning I make up on the spot by twisting the knows around and trying to make logical sense of it. I don't think there is anything wrong with drop tuning. Cool for that deep sound, love it for more metaly stuff. Can't go wrong with standard, though.

I don't care if others do it. I personally never use and and don't really plan on it in the near future, nor am I particularly interested in most of the popular bands that use it (read: this is COMPLETELY coincidental - some of the bands and styles of music i dont listen to happen to fall into the drop tuning category) The only tunings I use besides standard is open D and G for slide playing.

I'm with Ash on this one. I never really tune down more than one step anyway, and that's only to play "Yesterday" by The Beatles (One of my favorite songs).
I rarley down tune, but I tune to different things, including open G, open C and some other stuff, like DADGAD.
(And more than half the time I use a capo when I'm in one of those tunings anyway ^^)

When ever I drop the tune on my guitar I drop all the strings. I hate when people think they are playing just the coolest riff in the world when they are just jerking off the top two strings in drop d. I tend to like droping all of the strings not just my E to D. Drop tuning is no fun, downtuning is great. 3nodding

With the current band, I use standard tuning. I've used a lot of drop D before, but my favorite "drop" tuning has to be C. Listen to "Dramamine" by Sebadoh for a good example. Whereas drop D has a straightforward power-chord type sound, drop C adds a shitload of cryptic mystery.
Other than that, I used to try to mimic Sonic Youth's open tunings, but I decided that changing guitars for each song was kind of lame. I can play some Sonic Youth in standard tuning, and it sounds pretty close to the original - same intervals and everything. That's all I care about- if I know what key it's in I can improvise all over the song.
I also dig players like Leo Kottke and Ry Cooder, who do more traditional, but still unique, open tunings.

The lowest dropp tuning I've had was like a drop E flat or something.

Not a fan of drop tuning, not a fan of drop D tuning in particular.
I just like standard. Woo.

I'm a fan of standard tuning, and nothing else. I just stick with the familiar. I occasionally tune down to D, but only to play songs like Down With The Sickness or Outshined(god I love that song!).

i use drop tunings on occation. usually the most i do is play in down half step. but i've dabbled in derop d and even drop c down one whole step(CGCFGc). its sounds like u are almost playing a bass. its hard to be melodic in, but if u can pull somthing off, it sounds insanely cool.

I don't think there is anything wrong with drop tunings, unless there ridicoulessly dropped.I like tuning to drop D for heavier stuff, but my style is best with standard.
