Hey, so I'm trying to make homemade flash diffusers.

Any suggestions towards the best material for a homemade diffuser?

I usually use my internal flash unit on my Canon Rebel XSi.

I tried cutting up a white film canister, but my external flash was too big for it. Hahahaha.

Use a napkin or piece of paper smile you can even use colored pieces of paper like gels for different lighting colors!

Do I just cover the flash with a napkin/piece of paper?
Or do I create some...cone...or...something?

I usually just tape it right over the flash but you could try cones too smile it's paper so it's cheap to play. My fav diffusion comes from one square of toilet paper over my $100 external Sony flash ^_^

You could also tape a piece of vellum or tracing paper over the flash.
