Áilleacht agus an Foraois Beithíoch
Beauty and the Woods(forest) Beast

.........

Once upon a time, in lands far away, there was a great forest. And hidden in this forest there was a castle surrounded by a beautiful garden. And in this garden there grew roses beyond compare.
But, in the castle, there lived a great and terrible beast who kept watch over the garden and all that grew within.

It came one day that a man should happen upon the castle of the beast of the forest. He was a timid man with trouble speaking clearly. The man saw the garden and thought to pick a rose for his daughter, for she was as lovely as any rose.

As he made to leave the garden, the poor man was stopped by a horrible sight. There before him was the woods beast. It towered over him, it surely had to be more than six feet tall! Covered in fur with a terrifying face that would scare most grown men and small children.

"What, pray tell," Said the beast in its terrible voice, "brings you to my garden and possess you to steal my roses?"

The poor man was terrified, and rightly so, for the beast was glaring at him with ill will and malice.
"P-p-p-pp-please, g-g-gg-ggood b-bb-bb-b-beast, i m-m-mmeant n-n-n-no harm. I-i-it is b-b-b-but one rose."
The poor man cried, falling to his knees.
"F-f-ff-for m-m-m-my dddaughter."

"You must work in the garden until the rose has been replaced." The beast rumbled in its great and horrible voice. "Failure to comply will be met with great anger!"

The poor man agreed to stay and work as a gardener.

"B-bb-bbbbut p-p-please, let m-m-mme f-f-f-first r-r-returen home s-s-so my dddaughter ddoes n-not c-c-come l-l-looking for me."

"So be it."

The poor man fled for his life. Once home he explained the situation to his daughter. His daughter sent him to bed for he was quite exhausted from so much fear and running.
She then packed a few things and went to talk to this beast. Surely he was over reacting about the flower and surely he could be reasoned with like any other man, or so she believed.

But the young woman had never dealt with a beast before, nor had she heard of anyone who had.

And so, not the least bit afraid, she set out into the woods that surrounded the beast's castle.

Not but a few steps had she taken when she came across a woman of religion.
"The beast must be a sinner to be turned into such a creature," said the woman as she shook her pray beads. "He would surely eat you up!"

The young woman only smiled and replied, "If the beast has allowed my father to come home, then surely he is good inside and cannot be as bad as you say."
Then went on her way into the forest.

Not but a few steps had she taken when she came across a fair maiden with locks of gold.
"The beast must be a grumpy fowl creature with a heart of stone," said the maiden as she danced about. "He would surely eat you up!"

The young woman only smiled and replied, "If the beast has a rose garden, then surely he has a love of flowers and cannot be as bad as you say." Then went on her way into the forest.

Not but a few steps had she taken when she came across a clumsy merchant.
"The beast must be very very scary indeed," said the merchant as he tripped over his own hair. "He would surely eat you up!"

The young woman only smiled and replied, "If the beast has been hiding in the wood, then surely he is more frightened that frightening and cannot be as bad as you say." Then went on her way into the forest.

As she continued the trees and brush became thicker, making it so she was unable to see what was up ahead. The young woman began to think she'd never reach the castle her father spoke of. But she couldn't turn back now not until she reached her goal.

Just when the forest looked its blackest the trees opened up, showing her a sight she could not have imagined, leaving her wide eyed in wonder.

There stood the castle, still a good walk away, surrounded as it was, by a gorgeous garden which she could barely begin to take in. Nothing so beautiful had she ever seen. It was sad that one should keep this all to ones self.

But the young woman had never dealt with a beast before, nor had she heard of anyone who had.
