Today was a rather gray and cloudy day, and one of the few left before the Candidates would be set to their various chores and tasks about the Weyr. Gyl was currently lurking along the twisting corridors of the Weyr, giving passerby a pleasant smile as a means of greeting. He reached one particularly large corridor and halted, listening to the sound of pattering rain on the stone outside. Gyl moved over to a spot more out of others' ways and leaned against the wall, the melody of the rain clearly audible in this rather cavernous passageway. Gylren had always liked the rain, and now it was no different. A small ledge carved into the wall served as a surprisingly comfortable bench, and the reedy Candidate just sat down and watched others go about their duties.

His arms full of jars going from the larder to the infirmary, Bashir made his way through the Weyr. He was moving as quickly as he dared, considering the fragile nature of his burden. The jars weren't glass, but pottery, and fairly heavy, which also contributed to his speedy movement. There were another four loads of jars to transport before he was free to go to supper, and the golden-skinned young man was ravenous. Another reason for him to rush. Perhaps if he hadn't been in such a hurry, he might have had more time to notice Gylren, and not be startled by him to the point where he nearly dropped his load.
"Ah," he exclaimed, biting back the curses that came to the tip of his tongue at his reaction to Gylren. He shouldn't have been that startled by seeing a face where he didn't expect to. High Reaches wasn't exactly overflowing with people, but it was still crowded enough that some work had to go into finding a place to be completely alone. He should be used to seeing people where he didn't expect to see them. It wasn't as though Gylren was a particularly fearsome figure.
Performing an impromptu juggling act to recover his equilibrium with the jars, Bashir wondered if Gylren would bestir himself to be helpful, or whether he would keep up with his people watching. Bashir wasn't much of a people watcher, though he'd heard it touted as an amusing activity and given it a fair try. There were other things he'd rather do with his time. The implied idleness bothered him on a very basic level, and he could never ignore it completely.
"Busy?" he asked in a neutral tone.

Gyl smiled softly and shook his head, standing up and making a motion to inquire if maybe Bashir needed help with his load. He had obviously surprised the young man, and Gyl kinda felt bad about that. He had never liked surprising people, and he was thus inclined to lend his aid to Bashir--and anyway, it was just a nice thing to do.

Bashir was glad when Gylren made the offer to help him. His question about his busy-ness had been one of those that helped him form opinions of people. If Gylren had said that he was, it would have been a mark against him, since those who have time to watch people can't be too busy. His offer of assistance was not only welcome, but somewhat heartening. It was the right thing to do, if one viewed the world in such terms. Bashir didn't.
He agreed, "Thank you. Help would be appreciated. I think I overestimated my abilities when I was picking things up."
Using the seat Gylren had just vacated as a temporary shelf, Bashir rearranged the jars he was carrying, leaving a few behind for Gylren to carry if he chose. Bashir was still carrying the bulk of the jars, but even lightening his load by a few jars was a relief. His arms were well-muscled, but it was a long way from the larder to the infirmary. The brief respite was also welcome.
"I don't know how you find time to watch people," Bashir said good-naturedly as he set of toward the infirmary. "Oh. I'm taking these to the infirmary, by the way. I probably ought to have mentioned that."
