Okay, perhaps not sexism in the truly negative, rights-limiting way, but does chivalry violate the idea that men and women are equal? Being chivalrous is like a man holding the door open for a women, pulling out and pushing in her chair when she sits, etc. From Wikipedia: Quote: Chivalry[1] is a term related to the medieval institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love. The word is derived from the French word chevalier, indicating one who rides a horse (Fr. cheval). Today, the terms chivalry and chivalrous are used to describe courteous behavior, especially that of men towards women. Is chivalry just a way of being nice? Is it "fair" for a man to do these things for women? Why aren't women expected to do them for men and other women? What do you think?

On that definition, no. Because it's used to describe courteous behaviour, but not solely on men / women interactions.
In the standard usage in english however... that depends a lot on the person. I would doubt that most chivalrous men act on the idea that females cannot perform the act themselves.
Maybe it was the way they were raised, maybe they're just looking to score, changes from man to man, but I would doubt that in 90% of cases, it's sexist thoughts.

I don't think women deserve special treatment. I hold doors for anybody, regardless of their sex. If people wanna be courteous, awesome, but it shouldn't depend on the sex of the person.
Although I can understand preferential treatment for pregnant women/old people/people with their hands full... etc. But I don't think women are soooo inferior and weak that they can't possibly hold a door open themselves >.<

I know that for myself, it's a fair inbuilt reaction. Of course, I do it to males too, but not as often as females. 3nodding

I once held a door open for a female-unit at age 8 and got my head barked off by her. Apparently because I was doing it due to her sex she was calling me sexist... at eight years of age.
Never made that bloody mistake again...
...'tis also where I got my beliefs that men were the sexually abused party in our modern era.

A guy in my highschool english class did a speech on how "White Males" are the single most reviled group in modern times. Since everything you say is either racist or sexist.

Curse the ambiguity of the english language! You refers to white males per general. D:

In mid evil times the ideal chivalrous position was for a man to e courting an already married woman. Also the origins of the opening doors for women was that also in mid evil times property was always given to the first son, so the other sons would try to off him to get the property, the most popular way of doing it was by booby traps. Do you see what I'm getting at?

I deem it sexist, but not in a negative way. Anything that says the opposite gender should be treated well is a good thing.
