Hey there, and welcome to Souls Manifest’s Country Creation Contest! Though Navywolf, Head RP Manager, has created the world of Tarallus and developed many of its details, there is still one large part that has yet to be finished: countries! Seeing as there are so many that Navy can’t exactly come up with them all herself, she had decided to let YOU, the members of Souls Manifest, develop the countries of the world!

In this contest, there are a select number of countries available for development. You will be filling out a form about a country of your own creation. The countries that Navy believes fit the world best will be the ones that win. And your prize? Your country exists, of course, and is available for roleplay within the realm!

As with all contests, there are rules you must follow.

The Rules

1. Some countries have guidelines that you MUST follow. Some will have certain city names or features in them. Others have certain cultures or traditions that must be included. These things will be noted in the list of countries.
2. All parts of the form must be filled out; for example, you CANNOT leave the “current ruler” or “name” part empty. Fill this out as a form; feel free to just use bullet-points. All winning countries will require the creators to write a few good paragraphs including the information in the country form, for the info thread.
3. As with all events, no guilting others into not entering their ideas for a country.
4. Navy and Mal DO have the right to combine ideas from different countries as we see fit; both creators will be given credit.
5. You may either work alone or in pairs.
6. All countries must be based off of a country in our world. You MAY combine our world’s countries if it makes sense; for example, Norway and Sweden can be combined to form one large country.
7. You may create as many countries as you wish!
8. You may only participate if you have a Daeling (character without daemon), a Daemling and up (Daemling to True Form/Inner Manifestation), OR you have hung around the shop and shown yourself at least a week in advance. I don’t want people adding their ideas to the shop, then leaving.

The Country Selection

Eurlak
[[Click for Map]]

There are twelve countries in Eurlak, and two “mini-countries,” islands off the coast of larger countries that have their own somewhat different cultures. TEN countries and TWO “mini-countries” are available for creation. Countries #8-#10 are basically free-choice; they are smaller, and so can fit just about anywhere.

As the island of city #1 (a.k.a. Jaradin!) is very important, Navy will be doing this country herself, as well as the island next to it. These two countries are NOT a part of the contest; do not try for them, as you will be ignored.

Countries
#1 – Located around city #4, on the river. Second most important country of Eurlak and world; stopping place for all cultures and ethnicities before continuing on to Jaradin. Encompasses almost all of river from Sea of Aldera to mountains. Likely equivalent in our world is France; most other European countries will work, however.
#2 – Located around city #3; contains source of main river, perhaps some mountains. Most popular port for getting to Jaradin. Likely equivalent Germany; most other European countries will work, however.
#3 – Located around southern mountain range in Eurlak. No major cities; mainly small villages and towns. Any equivalent.
#4 – Located around city #5 (note: this city MUST be named Roma). Surrounded by Sea of Aldera on three sides, mountains on fourth. Equivalent MUST be Italy. “Host” country of mini-country #1.
#5 – Located around city #7. Includes part of south mountain range. Equivalent MUST be Greece. “Host” country of mini-country #2.
#6 – Located around city #9. Extends from south mountain range to north range, may include part of north range. MUST touch Valkan Sea. Likely equivalent Romania, Hungary, or Russia; must be something similar to/in the vicinity of those countries.
#7 – Located around cities #10 and #11. Northernmost peninsula; extends from Northern Ocean to end of north mountain range. Likely equivalent Norway/Sweden; I would prefer this to be a more primitive country, with some details similar to the Vikings or Middle Ages. This CAN be split into two countries, separated by the river.

#8 – Can be located anywhere; small country. Any equivalent.
#9 - Can be located anywhere; small country. Any equivalent.
#10 - Can be located anywhere; small country. Any equivalent.

Mini-Countries
#1 – Located on island of city #6; mini-country of country #4. MUST be similar to Italy or Sicily. If you create country #4, you MAY also help with this mini-country.
#2 – Located on island of city #8; mini-country of country #5. MUST be similar to Greece, Crete, or another major Greek island. If you create country #5, you MAY also help with this mini-country.

Otalin
[[World Map—No Region Map Yet!]]

There are six countries in Otalin; of these, FIVE are available for creation. There are no mini-countries.

Because of their twin-daemon characters, Mriae and StarrySeas have created the sixth country. As this one is based off of China, NO COUNTRIES may be mainly based off of China. You may, however, include small details of China in your countries. Please note that all but two of these countries are based off East Asia—think China, Japan, and India. The other two are based off the Middle East, like Iran and Turkey.

Countries
#1 – Far southeast of Otalin; bordered by lake and rivers. Has many ports on ocean and rivers. Mainly plains, no mountains. Possible equivalent India; any East Asian country will work.
#2 – West of lake; borders Eurlak’s Greek-related country. Small country. MUST be related to Turkey in our world.
#3 – North of lake; borders larger Otalin country to north and small Turkey-related country to west. Small country. MUST be related to a Middle East country. This country is responsible for naming the great lake of Otalin.
#4 – North of lake and small Middle East countries. Borders large river and Eurlak; does not include mountains. Plenty of forested land. North has an ice sheet stretching from mainland to islands and Svalbard beyond. Any equivalent.
#5 – South of large mountain range; bordered by ocean and mountains. Has many port cities on river and ocean. Can include Japan as equivalent; otherwise, any equivalent.

Afrikaanis
[[World Map—No Region Map Yet!]]

Afrikaanis has only ONE true country; however, countless tribes of natives inhabit the rest of the region, and there are a few simple settlement cities to be developed. The country, THREE cities, and TWO tribes are available for creation.

Countries
#1 – Encompasses peninsula, isthmus to Afrikaanis, beginning of river, and some mountains. Starting point of any explorers heading to Afrikaanis. Mainly a country of villages filled with adventurous families and settlements composed of trading posts and supply stores. MUST be related somewhat to either Egypt or Saudi Arabia; you will be working somewhat with Navy to get this country correct. You will be responsible for naming the main river, as well; MUST be similar to the “Nile.”

Cities/Settlements
#1 – Located on edge of desert on west shore; northernmost settlement city. Pick a country of Eurlak or Otalin to have claimed. Must be similar to this country.
#2 – Located on edge of desert on west shore; southernmost settlement city. Pick a country of Eurlak or Otalin to have claimed. Must be similar to this country.
#3 – Located on main river, south of country; not a part of this country. Must be similar, however.

Tribes
#1 – Inhabits area around main river; mostly a rainforest-dwelling people.
#2 – Inhabits desert/savanna area to west of river; a plains-dwelling people.

Overall, there are TWENTY different countries, tribes, and settlements to be created!

The Forms

The countries of each region and the tribes have different forms, as each has a different structure. Make sure you pick the right one!

Here is the basic format of what I want.

Your Name(s): Put your name or your group’s names here.
Country Number: Your country’s number.
Country Name: The name of you country.
Geography: Describe the country’s geography; rivers, mountains, etc. Anything on the map that is within the country MUST be named. Feel free to add smaller rivers and such to the country; just know that these must be small enough to not be so important that they must be on the map.

Based off of? The countries in our world that your country is based off of. Up to three; ONE country must be the major influence.
Describe the Culture: Simple: describe the culture of your country; their traditions, festivals, etc.

Capital City: The name of the capital city of the country.
Describe the City: What is this city like?
Other Major Cities: Ports or other large, important cities in the country.
Describe the Cities: What are these cities like?

Current Ruler: The name or names of the current ruler(s).
Describe the Government: How does this government work? Eurlak’s have kings and lords, Otalin’s emperors. Go more in-depth; maybe they have a parliament, or other type of government.

Main Income Sources: Do they prosper from fishing or logging? What about tourism and explorers? List the main sources of income.
Describe the Economy: Is the country wealthy, or are they scraping for enough money to eat? Describe how the economy and social classes work.

Brief History (optional): A brief history of your country. Completely optional, but it provides a nice touch. Note that for settlements this is REQUIRED.
Anything Else? Anything else important?

POPULATIN’ OTALIN, OH YES I AM!

Your Name(s): Scaramouche Fandango
Country Number: 5
Country Name: Nippon
Geography: The Nipponi are people of the foothills and plains, primarily, rather than the mountains, which they revere as the home of the gods. They have no word for the mountain range itself; they consider it bad luck to have the arrogance to name the gods' home themselves. Individual mountains may be named for gods, though, in order to attract a particular god to that mountain to bless the nearby villages, and some mountains are named for five or six gods! They have no major cities in the mountains; those are all situated in the plains, especially near the ocean and river. They call the river "Aimizu," or beloved water, for it runs wide and fairly slow near the cities, and it is a source of much food and wealth, as well as a means of travel. The ocean is Nipponno Omizu, big water of Nippon, and it, too, is revered as a sacred place.
Based off of? Japan
Describe the Culture: The Nipponi, as they call themselves, are a generally peaceful, agreeable people. They have a great emphasis on aesthetic pleasures, and why not? After all, are they not living in the most beautiful land on this planet? While Nippon is peaceful, they do have an excellent navy; after all, if there was an invasion, it would likely come from the sea. Both the sea and mountains are sacred; Nipponi mythology has it that the gods live in the mountains, and a sacred volcano is the gods' meeting place. A mountain festival is held every year, with pilgramages to to shrines at the foot of the mountains, where the people pray for the gods' blessing. Religion is very important to the Nipponi, but theirs is a loose, joyful religion with one main tenet: Honor the gods, and they will look kindly upon you. Children are dedicated to the gods in a New Years' Festival- this festival lasts for one week, with the New Year on the last day. It is on this day that children receive their official names- until that time, the family comes up with a special nickname for them. Each city or village has its own festival to commemorate its founding; this can last from just a day to almost two weeks, depending on the size of the city, and it means a day free from school for all children, increased wages for workers, and a visit from a member of the royal family- the Chrysanthemum Ruler herself visits the largest cities, while the tiny rural villages get a visit from perhaps a princess. There is also an Arts Month- a month where the arts are specially celebrated and artists are singled out from their communities as being personages of importance. The Nipponi see art as more than just a pretty thing- art tells the story of a people and of a community in a way that the history books cannot. Daily rituals and ceremonies include the Hedoran Tea Ceremony, a specific way to serve the afternoon tea, and the greeting of the ancestors, which is the memorializing of the recent and important dead each day at breakfast.

Capital City: Kojira
Describe the City: A bustling metropolis that seems to be one big arts district, Kojira is the largest and most famous of the Nipponi cities. It is the largest port city in the country, perhaps in all of Otalin (they haven't taken a census in years), but its wide streets and district-style organization make it difficult to get too terribly lost in. Famous for its beautiful red-roofed buildings (an ancient city ordinance dictates that all buildings must be built in the classic Nipponi architectural style and have red roofs), ornate courtyards, and of course, the grand ancient royal palace. Kojira is a very rich city; the cost of living here is quite high, so those who cannot afford it, such as those who clean the streets or work in its shops and restaurants, tend to live in the less-expensive nearby suburbs and commute on a short-range steam train. Kojira's public transportation system is the only one of its kind in the country; several small steam engines pull small (standing room only!) cars around the outskirts of the city in order to reach its various districts and suburbs.

Other Major Cities: Minya, Hedora, Rodan, and Kaijin are the largest non-capital port cities. Minya and Hedora are river cities; Rodan and Kaijin are on the ocean.
Describe the Cities: Minya is a port city on the river famous for its goldfish. A hobby among the Minyan elite is the breeding of fancy goldfish which sell for exorbitant sums. During the nine-day Minyan Founding Festival, three days are dedicated celebrating the fish. Minya is the sleepiest of the major cities; life seems to move slowly here, and good manners are a trademark of each resident. Hedora is known as the tea city; also located on the river in the south of Nippon, it is the warmest major city, and wonderful tea trees grow here. They have developed a ritual way to serve the tea with exaggerated movements and a kind of patience that even the well-mannered Minyans sometimes find exacting. Hedora is a city of wooden buildings and fragrant gardens; it, like Minya, is peaceful. Rodan, however, is not peaceful. Not at all. This loud, modern city fully embraces Eurlakian culture and even has many Eurlak-syle buildings and airship docks. Rodan is the youngest of the major cities, and was the first open to airships, as it was the first to have really tall buildings. It is said to be home to the best theatre in all of Nippon. Kaijin is a city of many shrines; it is dedicated to the gods of the sea and is the largest fishing city in the country. The buildings here are stone, and fairly utilitarian, and its founding festival only lasts a day, even though it is a large city. Kaijin people tend to be very practical and hard-working, and though the city is one of the wealthiest in Nippon, perhaps second only to Kojira, you probably wouldn't know it from how even the upper class refuses to lounge about.

Current Ruler: Rin Emiko, Chrysanthemum Empress. She is a kind, venerable old woman who loves her people and has done much for the lower classes, especially the farmers. Set to rule after her is her son, Rin Gamera, a man in his late thirties who is bookish and smart.
Describe the Government: The government is headed up by an emperor or empress, depending on the gender of the eldest child of the former emperor or empress. While the Chrysanthemum Ruler (the official title of the leader) has many advisors, they are believed to be descendants of the gods themselves, and thus, their word is law. However, their family is very important, for if they believe that the Chrysanthemum Ruler is behaving badly, public chastisement is quite a common occurrence. This, more than anything else, keeps the ruler in check!

Main Income Sources: Nippon's primary resources are its excellent rice farms, fisheries and forests, and so these are its chief exports. However, the Nipponi also export a lot of art. Between their wood block prints and their exotic theatrical stylings, traditional Nipponi artists do exceedingly well abroad. Tourism in the major cities, especially Rodan and Kojira, is also a source of income for the country.

Describe the Economy: Nippon is very much a self-sufficient country, as much of the land is used for farms. While not everybody has great excesses, nobody starves. The currency of Nippon is the yim, and paper money hasn't caught on. After all, paper has little worth, and just doesn't feel real. Coins, however, not only have an intrinsic value, but are also beautiful. A whole class of goverment-employed moneysmiths has cropped up, and they painstakingly carve and decorate coins to the exact specification of the Chrysanthemum Ruler. Yim coins are incredibly valuable, both at home for their relative rarity and abroad for their collectibility. A single yim coin can buy a week's worth of food in some places, so especially in rural areas, the barter system is still held in high regards here. Taxes can be paid with foodstuffs, especially rice and grains, and it is not uncommon for artists to have patrons who feed them in return for paintings, or for an author to chronicle a family history while living under that family's roof. There is a rough class system with the sustenance farmers and fishermen, 'untouchables' (people who take the dirtiest jobs, such as butcher or street cleaner) and the general urban poor at the very bottom, construction workers and other skilled laborers (like plantation-style farmers and commercial fishermen), architects, merchants, policemen, folk craftsmen, and unrefined artisans in the middle, successful actors and musicians holding a rank above them but below the upper class, which is comprised of successful painters, authors, and low nobility (some would call them the idle rich; they are relatives of the Chrysanthemum Rulers), and the top artists are considered the highest echelon of actual society, right below the palace staff and the Chrysanthemum Rulers themselves. Priests and other religious hold a special place in society; the state religion is akin to Shinto, and while the priests have no money or material possessions, they are never refused what they ask for. Most of the country are workers of the lower class; there are more farmers and fishermen than all kinds of artists combined. As seen from their class system, the arts are very important to the Nipponi; they have spent centuries refining them, and consider a nation's artistic values to be important when judging them for trade relations.

Brief History (optional): The history of Nippon is well-documented in the nation's art and theatre, but here's a brief summary: Long ago, before modern memory, there were just the gods. The Queen of the Gods, Nami, and her consort, Nagi, had many children, but Tseru and Sunoo liked the land of their parents and decided to stick around. Sunoo decided he liked the sea, and named it his domain, while his sister, Tseru, chose to remain on the land. Together, they created many animals from the various plants; Tseru took the buds of the willow and created the furry beasts, while Sunoo took seaweed and created eels, and used rough stones to create fish. Then, from these animals, the two pooled their resources and created Joto, the first Chrysanthemum Emperor, and his wife, Riki of the Sea. They prospered, and were happy, and they had many children, who took husbands and wives from other lands. While the native Nipponi were happy, their husbands and wives were not. They were not content with listening to Joto, and so they split into warring factions who fought for control. The Chrysanthemum Emperor was safe in his palace, however, for it was impenetrable, and after decades, when the husbands and wives were all warred out, he called for a treaty in his ancient age that would hopefully prevent all future warring. However, there were always squabbles for land. This bothered the Chrysanthemum Rulers, and eventually Kishi, the first Chrysanthemum Empress, came up with a way to bring this to a halt. She channeled her country's energy into creating works of beauty, not works of violence, and now all squabbling takes place on the canvas or on the stage as opposing nobles compete to commission the most works of beautiful art rather than hold the most land. Meanwhile, the land is in the capable hands of the farmers, loggers, and fishermen, who know how to work it to its best capacity. It has continued essentially this way until the modern era, in the reign of the Chrysanthemum Empress Emiko.
Anything Else? Sometimes it helps to think of Nippon as an expanded version of Tokyo (which is a small farming village) during the Edo and Meiji periods.

POPULATIN’ EURLAK, OH YES I AM!

Your Name(s): giftwrapped
Country Number: 7
Country Name: Scaandiva
Geography: Mainly a cold, mountainous country, the parts of Scaandiva that aren’t mountain and coastline are plains (in the west) and forest (in the east and north). The terrain is rocky, the ground little-suited to farming, and while the forests are massive and full of lumber and wildlife, that is somewhat changing with the economic progression of the country. The mountains prove treacherous but habitable to the hardiest of Scaandivan people, but overall, the majority of settlements are made in the plains and on the coastline. Scaandivan coastline completely lacks beaches: composed of rocky cliffs and fjords, it is beautiful but forbidding, often treacherous to ships. The coastal waters team with fish, and in general the country abounds with wildlife.

Though Scaandiva is admittedly cooler in climate than most of Eurlak, it has definite seasons, and is completely habitable. During the winter, there is very little light, with some of the northernmost portions of the country getting full days of darkness. Snow falls heavily during this time, and horrible snowstorms sweep both mountain and plain alike. The hardy Scaandivan people are adapted to such weather, but many visitors are taken by surprise. The summer, on the other hand, is pleasant. Sunlight is in abundance—and in the north, the sun never sets—and temperatures are pleasant, perhaps akin to early autumn in most other countries. This is berry and wildflower season, as well as birthing season for the herd animals—beauty is in abundance.

The primary wildlife of Scaandiva are ungulates—moose, reindeer, roe deer, mule deer, and musk ox—and their predators—wolves and lynx. There are also a great deal of songbirds in the area, as well as numerous interesting small mammals.

Based off of? Scandinavia as a whole: Norway/Sweden, with a bit of Finland
Describe the Culture: There are three main cultures in Scaandiva: that of the mountain Lappi people, that of the Sverig people, and that of the ruling Njorska people.

The Lappi people are a peaceful, unobtrusive group of natives. They are a nomadic, herding culture, focused on the cultivation and driving mostly of reindeer, though some will keep smaller herds of mule or roe deer and the mountain people often keep mountain goats. They aren’t formally organized, separating instead into large extended-family groups led by the eldest member—male or female doesn’t matter. They tend to avoid contact with the other people of Scaandiva, preferring instead to keep to themselves, and are fully self-sufficient, getting everything they need from the animals they herd. They have no interest in technological or economic advance, and though they are generally a peaceful people, they can fight like demons when confronted with the possibility of war or takeover. Their favoured building material for everything, from sleds to jewelry to weaponry, is bone.

The Sverig people are the closest thing Scaandiva’s probably ever going to have to a functioning society. Once an extremely warlike people, they have begun to mellow with age. Settling in cities and taking up farming more than fighting, they are as modern as you come in Scaandiva. It was the Sverigs who set up the University in Stockholm, and the Sverigs who pioneered most trade routes out of Scandiva. They are largely a farming people now, but they do keep organized militia and are willing to fight if it’s necessary. Their primary work is blacksmithing and forging, mostly tools but still weapons as well, and they have the greatest tendency toward art of any of the peoples of Scaandiva. They have a rich culture of poetry and historical stories, and their mythic culture is fascinating. However, they are nowadays subject mostly to the Church of the Authority.

The Njorska are the most primitive of the three people, in spite of the tribal culture of the Lappi’. A culture of soldiers and mercenaries, they are as yet largely unconverted to the Church and instead follow the old, polytheistic ways of their forefathers. They are nationalistic to the verge of xenophobia, tending to either shun all things that aren’t Scaandivan or absorb them in an attempt to make them Scaandivan. The current ruling-class, the Njorska have actually set Scaandivan development back a fair deal, nearly razing the university and all but destroying a large part of Sverig. That said, the Njorska are not an inherently evil people, and their primitive ways are just that: primitive, not openly malicious in any way. They tend to produce mostly arms and armour, and their army and navy are among of the strongest in Eurlak.

All Scaandivan people tend to be fair, with pale hair and lighter-coloured eyes. The Lappi people are the darkest of the three ethnicities, but that’s not saying much, as ‘darkest’ simply means ‘highest presence of brown hair and eyes’.

Capital City: Stockholm
Describe the City: The largest of the cities in Scaandiva and originally the capital of Sverig, Stockholm is the home of the ruling family and also the place with the greatest tendency toward advancement—and Sverigs. Built much the same as most medieval cities, it consists of a fairly small, fairly rude (by the standards of other countries in Eurlak) castle, surrounded by the bulk of the town. Trade flourishes in Stockholm, and those merchants willing to brave the peculiar political climate of Scaandiva come here to show off their wares. It is also home to Scaandiva’s only university—a college similar to Jaradin, with a significantly lesser focus on daemonology and greater focus on education—particularly world history and philosophy. This college is subject to the whims of the ruling-class, however, and currently isn’t much of anything at all. During the summer, when the sun barely sets, market-time is almost unending, and the summer festivals in Stockholm are something to be experienced.
Other Major Cities: Hammerung, Malmo, and Bergen
Describe the Cities: Hammerung in the north is similar to Stockholm, but smaller and more heavily populated with Njorska than Sverig. It also lacks a castle. It is a Northern trade town, and often the place where the Lappi bring their livestock and wares for trade during the summer. The market festivals there during the summer focus more on livestock than art, for the most part, but Hammerung is the other cultural center of Scaandiva. The smaller towns of Malmo and Bergen are more ethnicity-neutral than their two larger counterparts, and tend to be focused toward national, rather than international, trade.

Current Ruler: Njorska Konung Harald Haraldson
Describe the Government: Scaandiva directed by a ruler—the ruler is a monarch, and, regardless of gender, is called the Konung. The Konung is technically a hereditary title, going to the strongest child of the family (again, regardless of gender), but at least half the time the title passes in a slightly different way: usurpation. The ruling-class is extremely fluid, and anyone who can murder the Konung can (and does) proclaim him or herself Konung and rearrange the entire government. The privileged of the court of the Konung live in luxury, and rarely concern themselves with outside matters. For the most part, the rulers are responsible for rallying the country should it come under war, but not much else.

Laws are rarely made and policing rarely done, as the people tend to be fully able to do such things within themselves. Advisors are always used, and the eldest of them, loyal to the country rather than a particular Konung or ethnicity, are deeply respected. It is said that these advisors are the actual rulers of the country. The past several generations of rulers have been of Njorska descent, and it looks like it might stay that way for a while. As they are not currently in power, the Sverig people ignore the politics of Scaandiva.

Both the Njorska and Sverig people hate Kieva Rus.

Main Income Sources: Scaandiva is an exporting country, for the most part. Their main sources of income stem from the natural bounties of the land: lumber and fish are the two main exports, as are products derived from that (woodcarving, salt fish, etc). Reindeer (and occasionally other deer) and other somewhat rare northern livestock also fetch a pretty penny on the market, as do products such as wool and clothing made from said wool—the Lappi people produce brilliantly colourful blankets and clothing, all made from the incredibly warm wool of reindeer and mountain goats, that are favoured by explorers to the North.

Another main export of Scaandiva is war: the Njorska people, though they have begun to move with the times, are still super-efficient war machines, and their soldiers are renowned for their death-dealing.

Describe the Economy: Scaandiva has tenuous trade with a handful of Eurlak countries, but because of its tendency to take over anywhere that looks like it might be beneficial, most of these unions are heavily policed. For the most part, Scaandiva is forced to be self-sufficient, and because of this, it is economically and technologically behind most other countries in Eurlak. Technological advancement is a thing of mystery, and the industrial revolution might never come to this country if their government continues the way that previous Konungs have taken it.

Farming is rare in Scaandiva, generally restricted to small individual farms, and most of what grows are wild berries—blueberries and gooseberries in particular—and root vegetables, as well as certain species of incredibly hardy grain. These are never exported, except as strong alcohols—which are infinitely superior to the vodkas of Kieva Rus. The barter system is still relied upon heavily in Scaandiva, and it is only those in the capital who are able to use money to purchase anything.

Outside traders and merchants within Scaandiva are welcomed. Sverig is more interested in trade than the rest of the country, opening routes through the mountains and inland…though it’s begun to change a bit, since Sverig and Kieva Rus don’t get along well at all and that’s where most of the trade used to stem from.

Brief History (optional):

Once upon a time, around the beginning of the seventh century, the countries of Njornyn and Sverig were separate countries…if ‘countries’ is a proper word for them—it was more that there were two bodies of land, each with a separate ethnicity of people, separated by a river. Each was composed of a large number of smallish tribes, each tribe composed of a few families of violent, warlike people. The tribes settled in villages and eventually began to fight amongst each other—until they realized that they could cross the river and fight other tribes instead. This is largely how Scaandiva existed. Until they discovered organization, boats, and efficient travel in the eighth century.

Sverig was the country who got it right the quickest—uniting a goodly number of tribes under a single leader later called the Konung, it promptly attacked Njornyn and took over their lands. That victory under its belt, Sverig began to build boats and do similar to all the surrounding countries in Eurlak. It made it as far as Brittanica, got rather beaten up by the natives in Brittanica, and then went south, briefly beating on the people there, and then settling wherever settling could happen. At the same time, Sverig also moved both east and west—the Sverig marauders, who called themselves the Rus, might well have had a major hand in sparking the existence of Kieva Rus. And there are rumours that some Sverig explorers might have long ago made it to Kavata, though their records are somewhat hazy on this.

Of course, the fact that they had taken over Njornyn, which was full of a lot of very angry Njorska, meant that Sverig couldn’t spread itself too far for too long, and when other countries started fighting back, it withdrew and decided to return its focus to home—sometime around the twelfth century. After that, nothing much happened but a lot of infighting and a slight move toward civilization, which was often thwarted by the constant war between the Njorska and Sverig people. Eventually, though, roads were built, cities were established, a specific capital was arranged, and the two countries reluctantly became one, named Scaandiva. The fighting began to die down somewhat, technology got interesting, most of Sverig was converted to the Church of the Authority, and things seemed to be all right…

Until a secret Njorska army raised itself, stormed the capital Stockholm, and proceeded to kill the king and establish Njorska rule over Scaandiva, in about the mid seventeenth century. Unfortunately, this sparked massive civil war, which destroyed a great deal of the advancements that had been made and sent Scaandiva back quite some time. It hasn’t yet recovered, even in a hundred fifty years.

Anything Else? The Swedes are the dominant influence on all but the most recent Scaandivan culture, which is influenced by old Viking culture rather than anything in particular.

I tried to keep it Viking-ish, but as the Vikings were eighth to eleventh century, and we’re in the eighteenth culturally, there’s only so much one can do (up to a thousand years of time really changes the culture). Also, I’m collaborating with Tuatha De in relation to her Russia-equivalent.

POPULATIN’ EURLAK, OH YES I AM!

Your Name(s): Tuatha De
Country Number: 6
Country Name: Kieva Rus

Geography: Kieva Rus is a large country, covering a vaguely triangular area between the two major mountain ranges of Eurlak and the one in northern Otalin. It has a history of successfully repelling any attempted invasions from the Eurlak front, thanks in part to those mountains and in part to the brutal winters. The Otalin border is a little more vulnerable, at least geographically speaking.

Kieva Rus mostly consists of vast areas of fertile steppe to the south, with heavy forests to the north, with tundra only along the very furthest northern reaches. The large mountain ranges at each border host rich mineral resources, as well as effectively dividing Kieva Rus from its neighbors. While it boasts no major rivers, a dense network of small streams and ponds provide fresh water. Most of Kieva Rus has only two seasons, winter and summer, with autumn and spring only brief transitions between extremes of low and high temperatures.

With such a range of biomes, from coniferous and broad-leaf forests to grassland and even tundra, Kieva Rus has a wide variety of animals. The interior boasts numerous types of small mammals, ungulates, and predators thereof, as well as hundreds of species of birds. Kieva Rus is the home of the Przewalski’s Horse, one of the few undomesticated horse species. Dolphins and whales can be found off the northern coast, and tigers can be found in the far eastern regions. The brown bear is considered the symbol of Rus.

Based off of? Russia
Describe the Culture: The Kievan people tend to be practical, traditional, self-sufficient, and proud. They preserve their folklore and handicraft, even with culture from other parts of Eurlak beginning to slip in. Kievan fairy tales are renowned and treasured, taking ancient pagan beliefs and converting them into folklore that is sufficiently compatible with orthodox Church beliefs. The Kievan Orthodox Church of the Authority (generally just called either Kievan Orthodox or the Church) is very widely accepted, and has been the national religion for centuries. There is an extremely strong emphasis in the culture on submission to the Church, the Tsar, and the Authority.

Kievans are hardy folk, capable of weathering most extremes and continuing on with their lives. Their cuisine is hearty – black breads, pancakes, fish and poultry, soups and stews, often paired with beer or vodka. While Kievans have the unfair reputation of being stolid, serious folk, this isn’t true. Jokes and anecdotes are common, both light and black humor, as are puns playing off the richness of the Kievan language, and even potentially dangerous political satire can be found as an expression of the human spirit. Kieva Rus has also produced many truly stunning works of poetry, literature, and music.

Kieva Rus has had a history of… problems with various mentally unstable and deficient autocrats running the country. While he doesn’t seem crazy, precisely, lately Tsar Pyotr has been implementing some drastic changes to the nation. While many are hopeful that greater contact with the rest of Eurlak will bring days of prosperity, many traditionalists are resentful of the extreme steps. Somewhat alarmingly, these dissenters tend to be brutally silenced. Despite these problems, the Kievan people are ferociously loyal to Mother Rus, and will tolerate no insult to their country.

Capital City: Muscovy
Describe the City: Muscovy is not a port city, but it is positioned on a major road, serving as a trade route to other countries. It is a large and surprisingly metropolitan area, in stark contrast with the farms and forests that make up most of Kieva Rus. It has been sacked on numerous occasions in the past, and each time repaired and rebuilt better than before. It is known for its stunning cathedrals topped with distinctive onion domes, as well as its newly bustling trade; while Kieva Rus has no Magika-powered airships of its own, Muscovy has built an airship port in hopes of attracting more pilots from Eurlak.

Other Major Cities: Ra-Gorod, Vostok, St. Victorinus, Rossiysk
Describe the Cities:
-Ra-Gorod was the original capital of old Kieva Rus, back during the Golden Age, and many still consider it a symbol of all that Kieva Rus was and could still become. It was from Ra-Gorod that the princes of Kieva Rus pronounced their first written code of law; here where there were paved streets and a sewage system while many parts of Eurlak were still primitive. While parts of the city have become “modernized” (inasmuch as anything in Kieva Rus is modern) there are still many beautiful examples of old architecture dating back centuries. The oldest palaces and cathedrals in Rus are all here, showcasing the masterful woodwork and scores of small domes that characterized the masterful architecture of the time.
-Vostok is the major city farthest to the east, nearly in Otalin. If one is looking to hire Cossacks, this is generally the place to go – they patrol the Otalin border, and often congregate here.
-St. Victorinus is brand-new by the standards of cities, built under Pyotr’s reign in the western Eurlak style. Perilously close to border of Scaandiva, there are whispers that Pyotr intends to declare St. Victorinus the new official capital, though nothing has been made formal yet.
-Rossiysk is the largest port city on the Valkan sea, and as a result it acts as a gateway of sorts to the rest of Kieva Rus. While the rest of Kieva Rus has relatively few foreigners living there, Rossiysk is actually relatively liberal and cosmopolitan, welcoming traders and merchants from all countries.

Current Ruler: Tsar Pyotr I
Describe the Government: Mostly an autocracy under the Tsar, a position which is passed down by heredity in long dynasties. Kieva Rus has an… unfortunate history of mentally unstable tsars and vicious fights over succession. For ages, the nobility formed a representative assembly/advisory council called the Duma, but under Pyotr’s revolutionary changes, the Duma has been replaced with a new 10-person Senate. This has not gone over well with the nobility.

One might expect that with the numerous periods of instability in their past, Kieva Rus would have a weak government. In fact, quite the opposite is the case. The central bureaucracy is remarkably solid, having spent centuries functioning despite poor rulers, stupid rulers, mad rulers, foreign-controlled rulers, no rulers… They can pretty much take care of themselves. Regardless of who is in charge and what bullshit they are spouting, the Kievan government workers will keep plugging along, making sure that all the cogs in the machine keep turning.

Main Income Sources: Export of natural resources – timber, minerals, agricultural produce such as wheat, rye, oats, etc. Rus also has a few rare, precious mines for coal and metal ores remaining, though it is unknown how much longer these will last. The products of these mines are hoarded jealously, and only sold for exorbitant prices. They are also well-known for making the best vodka in the world. The BEST. Ignore what those damned Scaandivans say.
Describe the Economy: Kieva Rus, up until very recently, has retained a highly isolationist attitude. As a result, they are mostly self-sufficient, with the majority of the population being subsistence-level farmers. Serfdom is state-mandated. the ruling class, the bolyari, serve as landlords, but are required in return to serve in the military. The peasants work the land, frequently using the same methods as their ancestors without the aid of modern tools. Serfs are tied to their domiciles, and are not permitted to move from landlord to landlord. With access to both the Valkan Sea and the treacherous Northern Ocean, Kieva Rus also produces many talented sailors and fishermen, capable of navigating the hostile northern waters to pull in valuable Arctic fish and marine mammals.

Interestingly, while the relationship between the bolyari and the serfs is a fairly traditional and straightforward one, there is a third social class: the Cossacks. These military hosts, taking their name from the ancient ruler Cossik, act almost completely independently, roaming the more rural areas as police, protectors, and border guards. They are highly valued as soldiers. While most Cossacks are loyal to the Tsar, there are also rogue mercenary groups.

Brief History (optional): In the early 9th century, several tribes of eastern and northern Eurlak crossed the mountains and founded a new city, Ra-Gorod, under the rule of a man named Cossik. They gradually expanded their territory eastward and southward, until they controlled several major trade routes between Eurlak and Otalin. Kieva Rus was in a golden age during this period of a few centuries – literacy was high, the capital city had paving and a sewage system, the law system did not use capital punishment and gave property rights to women. However, like all golden ages, this one could not last. With the decline or destruction of several trade routes in the mid-13th century stripping Rus of its wealth and prosperity, and vicious infighting among family members of the ruling family hoping for a chance at succession, Kieva Rus eventually fell into near-ruin. However, this is where the history deviates from our world’s Russia. Where on our world, Kieva Rus expanded to include too many diverse ethnic groups and splintered into smaller regions and principalities, in this world Kieva Rus stayed at a moderate size. Halted by the mountains on one side and the borders of Otalinese states on the other, Kieva Rus never grew out of control. Thus, it never completely dissolved.

A massive invasion from one of Otalin’s nomadic tribes destroyed one of the eastern cities and wiped out a large part of Kieva Rus’ population. These Tartars held rule of Kieva Rus for several centuries. They were eventually repulsed, but with the ruling dynasty already flagging, this was time for a change. The capital city was switched from Ra-gorod to Muscovy. Revival of the Orthodox Church of the Authority ensued, and the age of tsars and autocracy began. One mentally unstable ruler was followed by a mentally deficient one. The last of Cossik’s dynasty was finally lost, resulting in a chaos of succession and false claims generally referred to as the “Time of Troubles.” Finally, the Kalamov dynasty took control and re-established order.

Tsar Pyotr I has only recently come to power. Unlike his predecessors, he is fascinated by the ways of western Eurlak, in particular some of the newer modernizations like factories and airships, that he feels could benefit Kieva Rus. He has visited a few of the western states, and seems to be interested in expanding Kieva Rus’ power and contact with the outside world. As of right now, it’s unclear what his ultimate goal is… The only thing that’s certain is, he has a plan, and he is laying the foundations for something big.

Anything Else? Done in partnership with Gift’s Scaandiva. Hope this is okay. :3

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

For Scaramouche Fandago's "Nippon":

Very nicely done! I like the thought you put into everything; it really makes the country come alive. My only "issues" have to do with the mountains, the monetary system, and the steam trains. As another country is largely in the mountains, this may cause some conflict between the two countries; however, this may make for some interesting events later on. Your country will likely envelop the foothills of the mountains, as Mriae's and StarrySeas' is in the mountains. Is that all right?
Secondly, the steam trains. There is not likely enough metal in the world for many of them; therefore, likely only the steam-producing parts will be metal, and the rest either stone or wood. You can either have them like this, or change them into large horse team-drawn wagons; whatever you wish.
Third, there is little metal money in this world; instead, Magika stone is used as currency for those wealthy enough to not have to trade. I'm not sure if you meant for the coins to be metal, but if you did, I think Magika stone would work well in its place, as it can still be carved and decorated. Even wooden coins would work, as there is a type of wood that is very hard, similar to metal and stone's hardness.
Otherwise, very nice! Nippon is yours!

For giftwrapped's "Scaandiva":

First off, I love the name; it goes well with the world's style.
Second, your reason for their delay in technological advancement was very convincing, and what I was looking for. I was somewhat questioning how far behind much of the rest of the world the country was for a while, wondering if it would work, when I read that section. Your reason was valid, and satisfied me; being a war and land-hungry country is a good reason they are so far behind.
I also like the history, especially how you incorporated the Vikings into it, as I wanted. The Sverig explorers perhaps making it to Kavata made me smile, and the civil war, on top of the worldwide Panic, also added to their slow technological development.
Overall, a very well thought out country, and an interesting subject for Jaradin's history classes!

For Tuatha De's "Kieva Rus":

I love how you mention the wide range of creatures within the country, as it being such a large one, it is bound to have many different species. I also find the rare metal mines very interesting and useful; perhaps Kieva Rus could play a part in something metal-related, or be a factor in the high price of metal objects. Tsar Pyotr's near obsession with Eurlak is also very interesting and could be useful for plots; the contrast between Kieva Rus's interest with the outside world and the snubbing of it that Scaandiva has was a smart addition. Basically, your country was wonderful, and could be very important in future plots and events, along with Scaandiva!

Essentially, all three of you recieve your country! Please turn the information in these forms into a series of paragraphs fit for an info thread and PM them to the mule with the title "[NAVY] Country Info". The thread will be up soon, with you three credited for your contributions, and the world now partway complete!
