The Katan home was rather quiet this morning, servants wandering about to do their tasks, the large home as quiet as it usually was. Lee was busy sleeping, and intended to do so well into the morning, probably not about to wake until noon or so. Mr. Katan had gone off to work for the day, and wouldn't be home for a while. The lady of the house was no where in sight, either, being a long walk behind the grand home, in the stables the woman kept as one of her many hobbies. "What do you mean she's 'being difficult'? Isn't this sort of thing what I pay you for?" There seemed to be a bit of an argument between Mrs. Katan and a stable hand. "I understand, Madam, but we've been at it for a month now with no signs of improvement. Perhaps you should consider... selling her?" The woman laughed incredulously at the boy before glaring at him. She'd spent more money on this particular horse than any other in the stables, not at all ready to part with it. "No. Here's what I will consider. Firing you if you can't do your job. Get back to work. I want her ready for a show next weekend." And with that, she turned her attention to the being in question; a Lipizzaner horse, one she'd creatively named "Snowflake", and one who had yet to be broken. There wasn't much she could do with the animal, though, as it didn't seem to want her to touch it. Either it wasn't much for human contact or it could sense evil.

Rory had awoken early as usual for the boy. After making the bed, taking a shower, and dressing for the day in his usual jeans and t-shirt ensemble, he made his way through the house. Wandering lost for awhile and admiring the luxury the Katans lived in, he finally made his way downstairs and outside to the backyard. Never having been out back during the day, he was surprised to see a stable in the back and grinned.
Walking inside, he paused to admire a beautiful white horse, the like of which he'd never seen before. Stroking it's neck and murmuring to it as it nuzzled at him, he didn't notice Mrs. Katan and the stable hand talking. "Howway tha', lass. Who's a pretty girl, eh?" He chuckled as the horse lipped at his hand, looking for treats.

Mrs. Katan paused, slowly turning around at the sound of Rory's voice. Both she and the stable hand blinked, surprised to see the horse so... calm. "You... you're touching her...?" How was it that Rory could get the horse to behave and no one else here could? Everyone in the area seemed to be eying Rory, some with jealousy and some with admiration.

Rory looked back at his future mother-in-law, giving a shy sort of lopsided grin. "Horses just like me, ma'am. Always been good wi' them. Your girl here ain't a bad lassie, nae. She's just a wee shy." He continued stroking the horses neck, letting it nose at him while he spoke.

"Shy?" Mrs. Katan looked back at the stable hand, who gave her a slight shrug. She hadn't known horses could be shy. "Well no one here seems to be able to ride her. Whether it's shyness or not, I can't show her if she continues to show no improvement." She frowned, looking over the beautiful horse with displeasure.

"You want me t' take her fae a few laps around your corral? Maybe see how she rides?" Rory asked, leaning on the stall's door. "Wouldnae be any trouble. I do it e'eryday at home."

"If you think you can manage that, why not..." She almost felt like laughing in Rory's face, but, on the off chance he actually succeeded in his efforts, she didn't want to look like a fool. Still, she, along with everyone else around, gave the boy a doubtful look. Mrs. Katan didn't seem to have any hang ups about putting Rory to work, and was actually looking forward to seeing the boy get trampled by a horse.

The boy went over and got a bridle and horse blanket. Stepping into the stall and speaking didikai soothingly to the horse, he got her bridle on and put the horse blanket on her. After leading Snowflake out to the corral, he mounted her easily and clicked his tongue to get her moving. The horse sidestepped a bit, not quite trying to throw the boy, but not sure she wanted him on her back either. Rory shushed her and stroked her neck, calming her, then took her into a trot around the corral.

All eyes were on Rory, and all of them with wide with awe. The horse was actually cooperating. The stable hand seemed to be the only one not impressed, almost pouting when he saw that another had done his job so effortlessly. Mrs. Katan smirked over to Rory on the horse, just barely feeling a bit proud of her soon-to-be son-in-law when she saw the others' faces. He was good for something, at least.

Rory stopped the horse in the middle of the corral, getting her to rear up a few times and then jump. He trotted her around once again, then set her to a gallop before having her stop on a dime and do a small side shuffle dance. Satisfied the horse was fair in riding, he brought her around to the fence and looked down at Mrs. Katan. "An' what wis th' trouble you wis haen wi' her? She's a fine horse. I ain't ne'er ridden one like her afore. W' only hae Vanners and Thoroughbreds at Farstep an' a few Shires fae pullin th' vardos."

Mrs. Katan's jaw literally dropped -- a highly unusual action for a woman so composed -- as she witnessed the horse actually doing basic tricks. Her expression didn't change as Rory rode up with Snowflake, and her gaze moving from the horse to Rory and back again. "How did you... No one could even ride her until just now..." Surely this had to do with his "gift" he'd shown off at dinner the other night.

"I train horses fae a livin', ma'am. Not hard t' know how t' handle a horse," Rory said, patting Snowflake's neck with affection. "An' she be a good lass. You hae all these stable hands an' trainers. How come not a one o' them has ridden her?"

The stable hand folded his arms, clearly a bit offended. "It isn't for lack of trying..." Mrs. Katan shushed the boy, rolling her eyes at the group of people around her. "Because apparently they're all incompetent at what I pay them to do..." Perhaps that was the only problem; it wasn't that Rory was amazing, it was that everyone she'd hired just couldn't do their jobs. Never mind that they'd done perfectly fine work on the rest of the horses here...

Rory got down from the horse, ducking under her head to walk to the fence. "I cannae say on incompetence, ma'am. I ain't ne'er seen them wi' th' horses. There's nothin' wrong wi' this horse, though. I donnae know why she wonnae let anyone ride her."
