Name: Rafferty
Age: 20
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: Smithcraft; Wrighting
Rank: Journeyman
History: Born into a family of Smithcrafters and Minecrafters, Rafferty knew where he was going in life from a young age. Being teased for his ugly face throughout childhood and for his slight stutter, Raff was encouraged early on to keep his mouth shut, his head down, and to do good work. And that's what he's always done.
Born in High Telgar Hold, the boy met and apprenticed with a younger, future engineer, Camryn, who didn't seem to notice that he was ugly, and instead listened to his stuttering, and occasionally good, ideas, he attached himself [platonicly] to her side and did most of the hard, general work for the girl, once it was proven that she knew how to do it.
The two went different paths in their craft, Rafferty clearly a Wrighter with his knack for fixing everyday objects and Camryn into Engineering with her bright intellect and logic, still, they obtained journeyman status at the same time, and when decided to pursue Candidacy at High Reaches Weyr, he decided to relocate and begin his journeyman work.
His daily life is spent wandering throughout the Weyr and heeding calls of "Rafferty!" whenever heard, as well as entertaining the youth of the Weyr and their nonhuman companions.
Appearance: Despite the generally average and occasionally good-looking members of his immediate family, Rafferty is rather unfortunate in the fact that he is not considered either of those things. Far from it, the young man is quite ugly. His face, that is. With a big, hawkish nose, small black eyes, various scars and a generally unpleasing bone structure, Raff isn't grotesque, but no one could feel honest about saying he's any form of handsome. His appearance lends to the assumption that he's rather simple, as his face is the open, unpretentious ugly of the guiless and dim-witted. A strong jaw, and good square teeth show that while he is ugly, it's purely natural and Rafferty is quite healthy.
The rest of his freckled, suntanned body, however much it may lend itself to the 'dumb brute' stereotype, is on his side. Exceedingly tall and broad shouldered, the intimidatingly large, 6'3, well-muscled young man looks the part of a good mason. In fact, if not for his slender, long fingers and the skill they contain, he would probably spend his days hauling blocks of stone from one place to the other.
Rafferty does not wear flashy clothes, and can mostly be found in well-worn clothing befitting his craft, though they are always clean and well-cared for as are all of his meager belongings. It is, however, clear that clothing is not what he spends his marks on.
Personality: Not the brightest crayon in the box, Rafferty is still far from the dullest. The young man is not stupid, but is simply not clever. He acts with his heart and rarely changes his mind once he's decided upon something, if it involves other people or social interactions. Rafferty avoids trouble and therefore also leadership, and the gentle giant prefers to make people happy.
When he finds those that don't mind his ugly face or slow manner of speaking, Rafferty is incredibly loyal and eager to please, in his own slow way. Animals of all kinds, as well as children tend to like Raff for his low, rumbling laugh and pockets full of treats, as well as his patient mannerisms and equally slow temper.
Though pleasant enough [to hear, not look at], Rafferty seems to have no real skills other than avoiding trouble and attention, until someone puts something broken into his startlingly elegant hands. The long fingers fly over the object quickly, and it seems they have an intelligence of their own as he squints at the problem, focusing intently to examine the object and fix it.
Lacking the anger traditionally associated with large men or attractive men, Rafferty is viewed with a mixture of affection and slight pity among the kitchen staff and is therefore supplied with treats in return for his services. It is well known that the muscular journeyman is a trustworthy person to leave both younglings and messages with, and he is often saddled with various responsibilities, just by being around at the right [or wrong] time, a task which he holds up to admirably. He is not the type to seek out responsibility, but accomplishes his tasks well when it is put upon him.
Rafferty likes, and respects, women and has had his fair share of experience with them due to his agreeable personality and fit body [as some of them say, one can't see his face in the dark, but they sure can hear his low, smooth baritone and body], and may even have fathered a child or two, though this is unconfirmed, and there aren't any weyrbrats running about with his ugly mug.
