First off, I would like to appologize for my very long absense from this wonderful guild.
real life has been keeping me very busy!

Ok, on to what this post is actually about...... steampunky places to visit!

Sloss Furnaces
The most wonderfully steampunk site I have ever come across has to be Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama. Sloss is an old iron furnace that is now out of commission, but is used to host lots of events and concerts and whatnot (most reacently a very tasty barbque festival). Being a lifelong resident of Alabama, it shames me that it took me so long to properly explore the furnaces.

It literally looks like some crazy mad scientists fortress or something... with rusty pipes going everywhere, dials and cranks attatched to everything, creepy leaky tunnels..... and most impressively, a massive generator room.

They also offer metal working classes... I have yet to go to one... but I would definitely like to!

fun pictures! X X

National Naval Aviation Museum
Overall just a really cool aviation museum, but if you look closely there are some nice steampunk elements too! One of my favorites is a skeleton of a dirigible hanging from the ceiling. Definitely a delightful museum for those of you interested in aviation.

These are all of the places I could think of, but I am sure there are other fellow guild mates that have visited other amazing places.... so feel free to let us know about them!

I must say- I'm thoroughly intrigued by Sloss, as I live in Georgia, only twenty minutes from the Alabama line- now once I cross, its a bit of a drive to birmingham, but still... I personally may visit one day. Looks to be a rather nice place for a picnic.

That furnace looks amazing. Imagine how impressive it looks in person.

A few years ago I went to the North Carolina museum of history. History museums tend to be good places to visit. One of the exhibits had old cars and carriages from the 1800s and old clothing and artifacts. And they had an exhibit with weapons and equipment from the Revolutionary war up to the War in Irag. I can't find pictures any where and they aren't on the site, but it was amazing. Too bad I didn't know what steampunk was then or I'd have dressed up to go.

I worked lawncare here for one summer, while they were stockin this museum. Its got some interesting old cars... but its not really that elaborate. It's hype is over the planitarium and the bloody dino fossils (which I find absolutely splendiferous, cause I love dinos)... but I thought it was cool that I got to set up the pedastles for the antique cars.

In Vancouver, BC there is Gastown - which has some nice antique stores and a steam powered clock. It is quite lovely. I remember thos awesome place in NYC as well, but I will have to be off my cell to research that further, as I won't be back home till Christmas.

In Britain, I find that many northern English towns and cities have very steampunkish buildings, filled to the brim with Victorian technology. One such town is Ironbridge, which I would recommend to any steampunker living north of Birmingham.

Manchester is so full of old factories and their ilk I can't think of any particular names. The inner city might as well be a dirty version of the Anachronism, though. Visit there and enjoy!

Any southerners in the guild would like to share some spots around London or the surrounding counties?

For those of the age of 21 and up, there's a wonderful bar in downtown L.A.
The Edison

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to go just yet, seeing as how I'm in Idaho. But from what I've heard and seen in videos and the site's tour it looks wonderful.

Here in Michigan ,that I know of we have Greenfield Village. It's a historical site. I don't remember much, but they have a working steam train AND a working steam paddle boat.

Also, the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk. The history of flight counts right? Great for plane enthusiasts, steampunks, 3rd graders, and nerdy 3rd graders who grow up to be steampunks.

Slightly off topic, if you go to the outer banks, climb jockeys ridge. It's a killer view.

Comatose, that was a spectacular tip...I now want to travel to the opposite coast just to eat at the Edison. Of course, as you stated, the age limit causes problems... But that means I've but two years to wait. Their site is spectacularly laid out, I must say.
