Renna was not having a very good day. It had all started that morning when she awoke to find her freshly rinsed tunic stained with dirt and mud. Apparently, someone had been stumbling around to their hammock the night before and managed to knock it on to the ground. The girl did not have many clothes, and with all her family back at the Hold, she had to borrow from one of the kitchen girls -- who offered her a dress. A dress, if one could even deign to call it that. The light tan bit of garb was more of something to sneeze on than an actual outfit. It was low-cut to the point of indecency in Renna's eyes and was floor-length with full, billowing sleeves. Of course, the young Candidate was a head taller than the kitchen girl, and so the gown more or less fell a bit above her ankles.

The kitchen girl told her it had been a gift from some boy who used to court her, but it hadn't fit her in ages. In fact, Renna could keep it! How lucky... Sure, Renna probably should have been grateful, but she felt ridiculous. Renna only wore dresses when her mother commanded it -- wasn't choosing her own clothing supposed to be a benefit to leaving the nest? At any rate, the young Candidate was wearing the thing, but kept on her riding boots and brown fitted vest. The vest helped to cover her bust line, though it did make the whole outfit a bit hotter.

On top of that, Renna had managed to piss off the kitchen girls during tuber-peeling duties. One of them, a squat girl with beefy arms, was complaining about how some boy was ignoring her, prattling on for candlemark after candlemark about how she could not possibly understand why he wouldn't want her. And so, frustrated, Renna had finally said, "Perhaps he gets tired of watching your fat gob flap open and closed all the time." It had been such an innocent comment. Really, why did they get so mad?

The girls had the last laugh. At break, they switched out Renna's blade for a freshly sharpened one, and the stubborn brunette had spent the last half of her day cutting her fingers to ribbons. She looked down at her sore and bleeding hands, pacing down the hall without looking. She'd have to find someone with numbweed -- and quickly too. All the bits of cloth wrapped around her hands had started to soak with red spots.

Oh, shards, this really was not her day.

When one person is going down a hall without looking, it's almost guaranteed that around the corner, there is someone else going down a hall without looking, and so with that....there will always be a collision of the two parties.

"Ack!" was all Annelie was able to croak before her book flew from her hands, and the green flit that had been riding on her shoulder shot up into the air and started skreeing swears.

"Oh dear, I'm so sorry! I wasn't paying attention -- I'm so sorry, are you alright, are you hurt?" she sputtered, blinking wildly. She was startled, but still on her feet and, upon finally registering what her eyes were seeing, much better off than the poor girl she had run into.

"Oh no, y-your hands!"

Oh, great -- even better. Now she had collided with someone. Cursing under her breath, Renna straightened up, agressively shoving at the too-small dress. "I'm fine," she barked, practically spitting. Taking a moment to breathe, Renna exhaled sharply, quickly reconsidering the vitriol she had just spewed. "I mean, it's fine," she said, tone softening dramatically. "I've just had... well, shards, I've just had an awful day." Cursing in front of a queenrider was probably not the most appropriate thing to do, but Renna had only just registered that she had been rude. The girl hadn't quite realized who she was talking to yet.

When the fellow-collider mentioned her hands, Renna dropped her eyes to them, fighting the urge to hide them behind her back. "Oh, these..." she said, half-contemplating creating a grand lie about how she had come to receive the marks. Perhaps she had fought off a wherry from a sleeping baby? Saved a flit's life at the expense of her hands? No... she was too frustrated for it. "The kitchen girls just... they just think they're too funny, you know, and they decided to get back at me for something dim I said. I didn't even think it was too mean, but I suppose you can't go around telling people they have fat gobs all the time. Eventually one of them is going to slip you a sharp blade, or what have you. I don't know. I... I just... I don't always say the right thing." Poor Annelie was getting uncharacteristically unloaded on by the young Candidate. Typically, Renna was not one to divulge like this, but it was just that kind of day when you would complain to anyone within ear shot.

Sighing again, Renna finally met eyes with Annelie -- and then immediately froze. Wha... what... oh no. Oh no. Gold dragons were exceptionally rare, and so all goldriders held a kind of celebrity status where everyone knows their name, their dragon's name, perhaps their weyrmate of choice. Renna knew that this was Annelie. And she knew that she rode gold Yansanth.

Oh, dear. Renna had practically tackled a queenrider.

"Annelie?" Renna said, a bit of anxiety flaring up in her eyes. "Sorry, so sorry! I did not mean to... I didn't mean to... oh, shards, I cursed and tackled you and oh, by Faranth, I am so sorry." It was Renna's dream to be a rider, and in her eyes, pissing off a queenrider could somehow jepordize that... right? RIGHT? Looking as much of a mess as she felt, Renna fought the urge to vomit, grovel, and run away simultaneously.

Annelie couldn't suppress a fear-related recoil at the girl's initial bark -- it was practically instinct -- but when her tone softened, the young Queenrider blinked and relaxed her previously tensed body. She looked from the taller girl's face to her hands, then back again to her face, and was about to open her mouth to speak, but closed it a half-second later when the Horrible Day story started to be unloaded.

Above their heads, Gnattie the green flit squawked about in annoyance for a minute or so before landing back on Annelie's shoulder. It was there was she tried to hiss at the speaking girl, but the queenrider wasn't going to have any of it, and the disgruntled flit was pushed off her perch with a seemingly absentminded swat from her owner's hand.

As Renna spoke on, Annelie listened intently (and didn't care to watch Gnattie fly down to the ground to sit guard at her heels), her face growing concerned and saddened in the process. The kitchens... that was a tough environment for anyone, even those who has been doing chores around there for their whole lives.

For the second time in the past several minutes, Annelie opened her mouth to speak, again trying to give some words of understanding.

...But she was unable to, once more, when the sudden spewing of apologies came forth. Ohhh...Annelie really, really didn't like this repercussion to being a queenrider.

"Please. ..P-Please, it's alright," she said, finally just throwing out words. With her face still expressing that of concern, she extended a hand in some not-physically-touching gesture of ...comfort? as she shook her head.

"Listen --listen, please. You really don't need to apologize, it's alright, it's okay, it's fine..."

Oh, shards, oh sharding shardy shards and shells, oh, SHARDS.

Renna's internal monologue at that moment was not fit for someone her junior to listen to, and she certainly was going to try (as hard as she could!) to clean up her language in front of a sparkly, sparkly Queenrider. The girl eased a bit to see Annelie's reaction. She had heard horror stories about other Queenriders, namely Favan, and she really did not want to get off on the wrong foot with one of them. This girl -- a young Queenrider, too -- didn't seem to harbor any haughtiness or self-righteousness that was commonly associated with the position. How nice.

Her eyes flickered briefly to the not-so-nice flit, but she largely ignored it. The girl was far too concerned with the potentially terrible impression she had just made on Annelie. Who knew -- Annelie might end up being the Senior Queenrider by the time Renna Impressed! These were things to consider, and to fret about... At the thought, Renna smiled, embarrassment evident in the clenching of her teeth.

"Oh, shards," she said, already breaking her internal promise to be more aware of her language. "I'm... well, I was not looking where I was going." Renna spread her fingers wide as a sign of her exasperation, but the motion sent a jolt of pain through both hands. "Shells!" she cursed, gingerly cupping one hand with the other. "Annelie... you wouldn't happen to have any numbweed, would you?" They kept some in the kitchen, but Renna had been too proud to go use any. She did not want the kitchen girls to get any more satisfaction out of the situation than they already were.

"I wasn't either..." Annelie quipped softly, getting her words in before the girl went on. She then looked down at the wrapped hands, and her eyebrows arched downwards and the corners of her mouth twitched when Renna spread and then suddenly cupped them.

Annelie put her own hands together near her chest and glanced up at the girl. "Numbweed? ...No, I'm affraid I don't," she said, and shook her head. Even though she was a queenrider, she still kept to many habits from before her Impressing, but carrying numbweed was not one that carried over.

Tentatively, she unfolded her own hands and extended them towards Renna's. "M-may I?" she asked, flickering her eyes back up at the girl.

The corners of Renna's mouth dip downward at the Queenrider's lack of numbweed. Oh drat, she really hoped Annelie might have some. Riders tended to have it on them and some of the hard laborers too. At least that had been her experience. Renna didn't carry it on her usually. It was not often that she did things that were likely to cause wounds. Well, except today apparently. Renna tucked her lips to one corner of her mouth, contemplating what to do. She thought vaguely of checking with Ichta. The tentative girl seemed like the type to carry it on her just in case. Or perhaps Moira... she always seemed prepared for everything. Maybe a rider she'd met?

The young Candidate did not have much time to ponder further on this as the Queenrider began to speak again. She eyed Annelie's outstretched hands, not at all aware of what on all of Pern the girl was about to do. Still, she was a Queenrider; it was the least that Renna could do to put a little trust in her. The girl did not hesitate. She extended her haphazardly bandaged hands to Annelie, flickering her gaze from the pale red spots back to the Queenrider's eyes. It was strange to meet a tentative Queenrider, but also quite wonderful. Renna had this image in her mind of a powerful, domineering and yet wonderfully graceful Queenrider, an angelic, almost unreal person -- as if they all fit into that same mold. It comforted the girl to feel, well, a bit kindred with Annelie.

While Annelie was technically a rider, she and Yansanth didn't fly together as often as other bondeds, and so most scrapes and bruises came from other, more smaller means. That...and numbweed just smelled too bad for her to want to carry it around anymore. But Annelie was unaware of these thoughts, and continued what she was doing.

As the girl offered up her hands, the young woman gingerly took one in her own and gently removed enough of the wrapping to look underneath at the damage. Judging by the splotches of red on the cloth, she had expected there to be at least part of a finger missing! But thankfully, she saw nothing of the kind, and the cuts weren't... okay, actually, they were still rather bad, and the grimace on her face expressed that clearly enough.

"You were peeling potatoes...right? When they slipped you a sharp knife, I mean..." she asked softly as she carefully looked at the other hand. She had seen cuts on fingers like this many a time. ...AKA: she had suffered the same experience many a time in her short life.

Standing off to the side of one hallway, Renna froze completely, letting Annelie look her hands over. The young Candidate was not particularly physically affectionate and so most physical contact made her nose prickle. On the inside, she was shifting on her feet back and forth, glancing about awkwardly, but on the outside, she tried to stand perfectly still. "Kitchen girls can be nasty sometimes," she said, watching carefully as Annelie peeled the paper away. "Yeah, I spend my whole day with the tubers. Sometimes they let me do other stuff, which is nice." She started to shrug, but stopped, afraid it might hurt. She'd rinsed her hands a few times, but she still felt like there were bits of peel and juices in the cuts.

Renna opened her mouth to speak, but shut it again. No, no, she scolded herself. She needed to let the Queenrider lead the conversation.

"They can be," she agreed softly, nodding her head in an almost absent-minded fashion as she peeked at the hand. It didn't take much experience in the kitchens to realize that.

A minute or so later, Annelie removed her own hands from the girl's and looked up at her. Head slightly tilted, and brows sloped in their current worry, the young woman gave a small sigh and pushed out her words.

"I...I really think you should see a Healer," she began quietly, her words precise, though her tone rather hesitant. "Numbweed'll take the pain away... but what if you get an infection?"

Honestly, Renna had done moderately well until that point with appeasing the kitchen girls. She had a nasty streak in her that could whirl insults just as good as the next foul-mouthed tunnelsnake. Of course... she didn't want a Queenrider knowing that. It would be best to appear as much of a lady as Annelie seemed to be. Of course, Renna was cursing in a too-small dress with hands that were slashed to ribbons, and Annelie was all but glistening next to her. Yeeeeah...

"I like the kitchen work just fine, and usually the girls are great," she began, nose prickling at the feeling of air moving over her cuts. Where the heck was a breeze coming from anyway? "It's just... I don't know... not my day." She smiled, trying to look every bit as pleasant as she assumed Annelie must be.

When the Queenrider took her hands away, Renna grimaced again, curling her hands back toward her body. She tried to put the makeshift bandages back in place, making a series of eeks and ooh-oohs as she did. Oh, shards, she wouldn't be able to hold a knife for weeks. What work might they give her that wouldn't require the use of her hands? "I'm going to be useless in the kitchen," she said, voice lifting in a whine. "They'll have me chasing down tunnelsnakes or picking numbweed or mucking out stables, I know it." Most Candidates who attempted to switch from their assigned chores tended to get moved to the worst of the bunch. Renna refused to share that fate! Perhaps a Healer would be a wise choice...

"Maybe I should see a Healer," she said at last, exhaling so sharply that she tossed her bangs in the air a bit. "I'm... not sure... where to go though. I haven't been here too terribly long, just since right after the last Hatching." Actually, the time she had spent here should be enough to know where to track down a Healer, but Renna was more consumed with watching the dragons in the Bowl and reading in the library. She hadn't really taken it upon herself to get terribly well-acquainted with the less traveled parts of the Weyr. She hoped Annelie wouldn't think her a fool for that.

Listening quietly, Annelie gave no change in expression or mood when the girl took on a whining and some-what self-pitying air. She did, though, think about making a comment about how she could still work in the kitchens and wouldn't be forced to muck-out stalls since that took more hand-work than peeling potatoes...But, in the end, she refrained, and just gave a sad little smile and a nod. Seeing a Healer was definitely the right choice of action.

"Oh. It's just..." she began, then trailed off and let her eyes wander to the side as she moved into a silent train of thought. A small "uhhm" left her lips, and she glanced around a bit more as if hesitant about something. Oh Faranth.

"It's -- I'll show you." The infirmary wasn't a place she really liked to go -- there were too many people that were willing to take notice and ask her questions -- but she couldn't just give the girl directions and hope she got there.

With a small, truthfully sincere smile, she stepped to the side, picked up her fallen book, and moved in a gesture to tell Renna to come along.

"Y-you were lucky to miss that," she suddenly commented, "the last Hatching, that is."

Renna perked up when Annelie offered to guide her. Well, how about that? A Queenrider giving her a tour to the infirmary! If she were being honest with her mother about why she was at Ista in the first place, it was the kind of thing Renna would write home about -- perhaps she could tell her Grandfather? He would find it exciting...

"Thanks so much, Annelie," she said, following alongside the older girl. "I still get turned around here." Stumbling awkwardly over the skirt of her borrowed dress, Renna held her hands in front of her like a healer about to enter a sterile environment, elbows bent, hands carefully held in front of her chest.

Glancing about the hallway, Renna felt spectacular walking alongside a Queenrider. That had to give her some status... right? Who is that girl walking with the Queenrider? She imagined all the things those around her might be thinking, how her face might suddenly stick out to them. She was still a girl; daydreaming was practically an occupation! "Yes, I heard about the last Hatching. I know it was bad, but... I would have liked to be there, at any Hatching really. I've... I, well, I haven't spent much time around dragons. And to have a gold on the Sands... I mean, I'm sure you know better than anyone what it is like." She smiled, light catching in her dark eyes. Annelie really was making her feel wonderful, improving the wherryhole of a day she'd had.

"I'm Renna, by the way. I know you're... well, everyone knows you, right?" She laughed, half-awkward, half-awed. "Annelie the Queenrider." Renna backed off the adulation then, realizing just how, well, desperate she had to seem. The girl was absolutely in amazement at a face-to-face interaction with a Queenrider, but she still had her pride to think of! Trying to subdue her smile, Renna relaxed her wrists, focusing on anything but the pain.
