So, you're in the delivery room, and your baby daughter is born. You've deliberated about this moment for months, and now that she's hear, you want everyone to hear you say her name for the first time:
Chaquetta Tinoyia [insert last name]
(silence)
Okay, that's cute for the first 13 years, but at 24, will her personal drive be enough to overcome the choice you made back then? Are certain names may be too 'black' for an employer to take seriously?

[Well...she can legally change her name at 18, right?
But let's say she doesn't want to go through the headache. If I was given that name, I would go by a nickname; I know plenty of people with "ethnic" names who go by nicknames on a permanent basis (I know a Concepcion who goes by Connie). And, OMG, I DO know a Chaquitta and a Conchita. gonk
Anyway, I think that in additon to going by a nickname, I would find myself always trying to "make up for" my name. I would dress professionally, speak properly, and present myself well. I would struggle with being pre-judged all the time by employers and banks and schools, and even by peers.
I don't know if names are "too black" to take seriously...I'll have to think of a response for that one.] we have SO many topics about names now...

i also submit for your perusal this article from ABCnews.com.
i have to comment, first, on the young woman quoted at the end. somehow, i don't think her name was the problem here. i think it was her lack of command of the English language.
I'm counting on you, Dragon lady, to keep the discussion going in my absence! You are the mod, anyway xd i've gotta put my young'ns to bed!
you're right. there are a lot of threads about names...

Hmm. People just want their kids to be unique and I've semi accepted that. The uniquer (is that even a word?) the name, the more independent they are, I guess.

I think the name would more be a reflection on the parents' "independence", since when a child grows up, s/he may or may not be the same way his/her parents were.
it's not that some of the names aren't nice, but they can actually affect the outcome in a number of places and situations, not the least of which may be a job interview or a call-back. I'd hate to think that Kenitra won't get the job she wanted because the recruiter looked at her name and shook her head. As much as we might not think that happens, it does.
I'm pretty sure it even happens to me.

thirdeyephilsophy that reminds me of the line from All Falls Down: "Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexis" [ evil ]
[That burns.] my friend, MKA, *laughsnort* That one Kanye West song reminds me of you! *goes on to sing* "...Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter 'A-Lexus.'" My friend keeps saying that around me and it makes me want to cut out her tongue.
...*ahem*...
I wouldn't really resort to violence, but damn, it's really annoying hearing that. "Lexus" and "Alexis" have nothing to do with each other. I've been hearing that "car" bullshit the whole length of my existance.
Gee, guess what my real name is... stare ]

Gee, guess what my real name is... stare ] Aww. I have a family friend named Alexis... and I think it's pretty. I never though about it in terms of a car... With All Falls Down, I thought it was funny, but I didn't automatically go to the conclusion that that's why they named her that...
