Tribble churred warily from her new perch. For some reason the firelizard couldn’t figure out, the humans---La and Cordel----had made quite a big fuss over putting a broom-thing over the door to Cordel’s office. Humans were just strange creatures, really… right now, that fact worried her. Anxiety whirled yellow in her eyes, a clear indication of the firelizard’s feelings. She churred again and uneasily sidled down the broomstick.

If Cordel had to name his biggest problem----you know, besides a virtually non-existent social life, a habit of drinking dinner, and an abrasive manner----he’d say it was his way of winding himself up. Sometimes, he just unwound, all at once. Annoyance was pretty much his basic mood; it’s what he was, nearly all the time. But this was more extreme… the Healer glared at the files in front of him, as if hoping that the mere force of his stare would either cause the files to burst into flames or, failing that, at least correct whatever was wrong with the patient.

Although in these cases, what was wrong with the patient was the owner. “Deadglows… b*****d sons of tunnelsnakes,” he muttered under his breath. “Can you believe this, Tribble? Some deadglow gets a hold of a firelizard and decides that makes them qualified to act as a dragonhealer! I’m not sure I can correct the damage they’ve done here…”

Idiots! Why didn’t they just take the poor thing to a proper dragonhealer? His temper simmered quietly, probably producing at least five servings of rage and anger. Some small core of himself knew the reason why, though. There simply weren’t many dragonhealers. They didn’t get hurt often, really. And people just didn’t sharding well think about things. They just did things. La was a great girl and all, of course, but... there just weren't enough dragonhealers for the firelizards.

It was be impossible to deny that Liniyie had not heard the gossip running circles amongst the candidates, his time spent among boys who chattered like girls a little more then tiresome as of late, and it would also be entirely impossible to deny that the young man had hardly been interested what most of the gossip pertained too. He was not interested in who would be flying whom, who went to the new Weyr and why, or who was doing things behind the backs of those in charge. He mostly kept to himself during the times of idle chatter, nodding now and then when his name was brought in to give his opinion, though there was one bit of gossip he couldn't really ignore.

Someone had mentioned that a Healer - more specifically a Dragonhealer - was looking for an Apprentice. Details on for what purpose were pretty vague, which disappointed Liniyie when he actually tried to press for more information from the usual wells that spouted around, and soon the youth found himself in a position he'd rather not be in. He had the choice of asking around until gossip of him being nosy reached the ears of the person he was asking about in the first place . . . or he could actually do to them straight away and get confirmation then and there. It never hurt to ask - the Master at the hall were always harping about people needing to ask more instead of assuming, so he figured mustering up the courage to do so wouldn't hurt.

. . . . or so he said to himself, but as he found himself getting close to the office of a certain Cordel and felt his stomach drop to his boots, he was having second thoughts. This man wasn't known for his superior skills in terms of social nature, or so Liniyie had heard and grasped.

It...I'm just asking. It's not like anything bad can happen, I can't be sent away from the Weyr for just asking.

Which was true, since he was a candidate who'd been searched out, so he couldn't be sent back to the Halls for nothing. Not that going back would dampen his dreams of being a Dragonhealer, it would probably only help in some way or another. Having a Master closer to home would be better though, so he mustered whatever nerve he could find and stepped towards the entrance. . . before he stubbed his toe on the back of his own foot, and cursed. Loudly.

“I swear, if one more idiot hurts their own firelizard with this sort of stupidity, I’ll stake them out for thread myself…” Cordel muttered, unaware of the sneaky little Candidate creeping closer to the door. That is, until he heard the curse just outside of it. With a heavy sigh, the man closed his eyes and counted, very slowly, to ten. He wasn’t sure why he always did this. In theory, it allowed all the anger to flow out or something but, in practice, it just allowed it to build up more. Delaying the inevitable made it no less inevitable.

Tribble trilled again, slightly more shrilly this time. The firelizard did not like this and did her best to warn the other person away. Cordel needed quiet time right now. Or, failing that, La to chase him out of the Infirmary with a broom. But maybe another person being there would be a good thing? She made another quiet noise, one that actually got Cordel’s attention.

“Tribble, sweetheart, don’t play with the broom,” the Healer said, keeping his voice calm with extreme effort. “Come down from there… there’s a good girl.” At least the green had some sort of calming influence on the Healer, mostly because it was impossible to stay too angry in the face of the skittish little darling. Finally, the man opened the door and glared at the boy. “Yes? I assume you came here for a reason and not to just curse outside my door?”

Liniyie actually to look up from where he was squatting when he was approached, his hands rubbing the toes of his stinging foot with an effort to quell the pain down, and his face blanched when he found the person he'd been looking for standing over him. Looking displeased. What a surprise.

Shards. Just...shards.

"I came because I had some questions I wanted to ask you."

The words spilled past Liniyie's mouth before going past his brain, sort of unfiltered with little to no regard about his situation. He quickly shook his head and got to his feet, tapping the heel of his boot on the floor to give room to the toes that still protested in pain against his sudden actions. He was able to ignore most of this, and he did his best to straighten up despite the state he'd already presented himself in.

"Shards, that's not what I meant to say. That is, I mean . . ."

He didn't know exactly what he'd meant to say either, and with each passing moment he fumbled for something he felt himself getting smaller and smaller in this man's eyes. He had to think of something, and quickly.

"Ihadheard you werelookingforanapprentiance for dragonhealing andIwonderedifit was true."

It came out quickly, his actual purpose for being there, and it sounded more like he was slurring a sentence instead of asking. Liniyie slapped himself inside over and over, but the damage had already been done. All he could do now was look the man straight in the eye when he was told to get out and go do something else, but at least he had done what he'd set out to do.

“Questions.” Cordel repeated the word flatly, clearly thinking that it wasn’t a strong reason to bother a Master rank Healer. There were plenty of other people who he could ask! But… once Cordel got his temper under control a little, he was in a better state to notice the little things, namely the fact that the boy was clearly terrified. If he was this scared and still thought to come and ask questions of someone who was not exactly pleasant on even the best of days, it had to be important.

Tribble did her part and curled around Cordel’s neck, like an extremely fancy and alive necklace. Oh, and one that nibbled on his ear every few seconds, no matter how often Cordel pushed her away.

“Take your time, lad. I’ve got some free time.” Well, not really; there were some files to be filed and that sort of thing. But those things could wait, especially since the kid was injured or something. If Cordel let him wander off just because he was in a bad mood, he’d be in an even worse mood later. Sometimes, he hated having to be the good one. “…Pardon? Did you say something, or was that just a cough?” he said after the boy babbled about something.

The word ‘dragon’ had appeared in it. Beyond that, Cordel couldn’t really tell. “Well, come into my office and I’ll take a look at your throat and foot and see if anything can be done. You’re a Candidate, I’m guessing?” It seemed like everyone between the ages of 10 and 21 was a Candidate. Shame, since some of them had some real potential… he was honestly lucky to have gotten La and would be lucky if he found anyone else willing to work under him.

"Ah, my foot is, I am . . ."

Liniyie started to talk, but he quickly shook his mouth into silence and simply gave a nod to indicate his response to Cordel's questioning of him. He knew he foot was fine, even someone as low in rank as he in terms of Healer craft knew about stubbed toes being nothing more then a pain for a good while, but it puzzled him as to why this man was asking about his throat. He felt fine, he wasn't sick even from that swim outdoors a little while ago, but maybe this Master had heard something in his voice that even he hadn't noticed? That would be pretty impressive, even to someone not as easily impressed by people as Liniyie.

"To answer correctly, yes I am a Candidate, but I was an Apprentice at the Healer Hall before I was searched to this Weyr. My name is Liniyie."

The Apprentice turned Candidate finally gave his proper regards, his head tilted slightly with an acknowledging bow one would give a Master of a Craft. When he looked back up his face was still pale, his skin still slightly clammy with nerves, but the initial fear of being before this other man had seemed to vanish from his system. Liniyie was the type to not fret for too long, since over-thinking was better kept to practice instead of actual interactions, and as he calmed himself with deep breaths he was still on edge . . .but only a bit.

It was after he'd calmed himself down more that the youth finally noticed the flitt attached to the older man's neck, his eyes moving to her quickly and almost reacting with complete awe. He'd seen many a firelizard before, true, but each time they still filled him with a giddish wonder that seemed to belittle him into a child. This certain firelizard was no exception, her green coloring glorious in his eyes.

"She's stunning, if I may say so."

It was odd how he couldn't even ask the man a question, but when complimenting a dragon or a firelizard he found no shortage of courage.

Bowing wasn’t something Cordel had a lot of experience with, except towards Queens. It certainly wasn’t a gesture extended towards him much. Maybe it was the fact that he mostly hung around with La, W’ten, and K’em… none of them were particularly given to such things. He blinked in mild surprise as Liniyie suddenly bent over and he vaguely wondered if the boy had dropped something. Well, he straightened up soon enough, so…

OH! That was a bow! Right. Cordel cleared his throat awkwardly and said, carefully, “You don’t have to do that. I’m not used to people actually noticing the rank. My own Apprentice ignores it.” There was an injection of annoyance in that statement, but not much. It was an unconventional Apprenticeship, but he rather enjoyed it. “As you probably know already, I’m Healer Cordel. And this little lady is Tribble. Don’t mind her; she’s harmless.”

Well, unless a person happened to be a piece of fish or wherry. Then Tribble would be all over that.

Cordel finally smiled at the compliment towards his firelizard; the man didn’t have a whole lot of luxuries in his life, let alone things he felt genuine pride in, but the flit was definitely one of them. “Thank you. She’s very special to me. Anyway, what did you come to see me about, exactly? I can’t help unless I know everything,” he pointed out as he grabbed a blank file so he could write down the information.

Now that Cordel was calming down, Tribble felt a bit better about exploring this new person. Hesitantly, she slunk down the man’s arm and onto the table. She skittered to the end of the table and stood up on her hind legs so she could get a better look at this strange boy who had wandered in. Not many people came just for fun, Tribble knew. She churred curiously before looking back at Cordel and then to Liniyie again.

Liniyie was watching Tribble move around more so then listening to Cordel, probably not a good idea considering he'd actually come to see the man more than the firelizard on the table, but it couldn't be helped that he found such small creatures fascinating to watch. Of course, he liked watching the much larger and slightly more useful versions of these small beasts as well, but for now he would focus on what was before him. Seeing a flit like this was probably the closest he would ever get to anything with wings, so Liniyie had to pick and choose.

"You've actually already answered my question, in a way. I . . .I had been hearing some gossip amongst the Candidates, mostly the ones who had come from the Hall with me, that you were looking for an Apprentice, but if I'm not mistaken you've said you already have one, so . . . ."

The youth did his best to not look disappointed, which wasn't too hard either considering everything he'd heard was all gossip and not really confirmed. While he knew that many Masters often took on more then one Apprentice in order to teach, he wasn't so sure the man before him was of that type. Liniyie knew next to nothing about him other then 'He's a Master healer' or 'He likes to drink' or 'Guy's kinda . . . mean', so it was in his won best interests to not jump to any conclusions over anything. After all, at least Cordel had sat down with him to talk.

While Liniyie watched Tribble, Cordel watched him. At the Hall, Tribble had gotten plenty of attention. Firelizards weren’t exactly common in the Northern Continent, even now. But here in the Weyr, they were far more common. A Green like Tribble might get a few curious glances----or, to be more precise, the moving lump inside of Cordel’s shirt would get a few curious glances----but not many people showed a genuine interest in her. And that got Cordel’s interest, for the time being.

After all, he was avoiding paperwork. Just about anything was more interesting than paperwork. Finally, all of the pieces slotted neatly into place or at the very least didn’t need to be mashed in. Ah. Cordel drummed his fingers against the table for a bit, trying to find the right words for the situation. Truth was, he was looking for an Apprentice. The boy seemed a bit bloodless, but he had actually come here to talk. That spoke well of him. Cordel had no time or patience for some shy and retiring kid; being a Healer meant never buckling under pressure.

“Yes, I have an Apprentice. And I am looking for another one. Judging by your interest in Tribble here, you’re talking about a dragonhealing Apprenticeship, right? Well, just as well that you’ve been to the Hall then. A lot of dragonhealing involves healing people too, or at least knowing how to handle them.”

So, he wasn’t exactly saying ‘no’… not yet, anyway.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:52 pm

Liniyie's head snapped away from looking at Tribble, where his gaze had drifted yet again due to the silence, and his cheeks flushed a bit red to know he was being rude when clearly he may have something going for him. Even if it was just a little bit of hope, the youth knew now he would have to choose his words carefully lest he speak like a deadglow and get tossed back out.

Not that he would have minded, since this whole experience let him get so close to a firelizard like this. For a guy like himself, this was a day not to forget any time soon.

"I'd like to focus on Dragonhealing, yes, but as you're saying I do believe taking care of humans is just as important. The bond between a Dragon and a Rider, their mental health towards one another, can often be soured if one or the other is injured and causes worry. Extreme worry can cause more damage to the body then a physical wound, so it's better if a Healer can treat both patients to prevent such a thing."

He really wasn't thinking too hard on what to say, instead following the path of not filtering between his brain and his mouth, as he figured once again he had nothing to lose but a bit to gain if things went smoothly. He did know a good deal about fatigue from his days at the hall, watching weary riders sick with worry when a dragon took injured, or the same course of watching a Dragon grow dull in hue day after day while their Rider stayed in a place out of their reach. He honestly hadn't seen much of that in terms of Riders and Dragons, since few came to Hall during the times he actually was allowed out and around others, but he'd seen his fair share with the firelizards. The bonds were the same, after all.

"I...I really have no problems dealing with people in situations I can handle, but I need to learn to have more confidence in situations beyond my control - to know that I can find a way to take back that power and get things right."

Cordel arched an eyebrow at the words that came tumbling out of Liniyie’s mouth, one after the other. It was a bit like watching an avalanche; it all started with just one small word, but then it seemed like it would never stop and perhaps, after it did, it might bury a few small valleys of conversation. Faranth’s ichor, it really sounded like the kid had eaten the very handbook on dragonhealing, or at least the first chapter of it. Cordel wasn’t exactly impressed; it didn’t take much skill to repeat what one had read, but it did take actual interest to commit it to memory. Well, he could make due with that. It was better than the alternative.

Besides, Liniyie was pretty much agreeing with Cordel’s own theory about the mind and body connection. One affected the other, just like a dragon and rider. Or firelizard and owner.

“Well, I’ll take you on as a probationary Apprentice for the time being. You’ll have to meet Lanakirene of Green Isonth at some point; she’s my current Apprentice and a very smart girl. You’ll find that my idea of an Apprenticeship is a little unconventional. If that bothers you, you might as well leave now, because it won’t be any different. And you’ll learn that a Healer is never in control of any situation. The best you can hope for is simply not being buried.”

“Now… Candidate lessons end in the early afternoon, right? I don’t expect you to put your Apprenticeship ahead of that, but I do expect you to check in after lessons. Mostly, you’ll just be seeing me or La work with firelizards at first. Now, are you ready for your first lesson?” Cordel didn’t believe in slowly working up to things, at least not often. He preferred the dive-right-in-and-see-who-drowned method of teaching.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:13 pm

Liniyie blanced, but swallowed himself inward to keep his face calm and cool. This was not what he had expected, at all, so to act like a wherry running around all a fool would only hurt himself from where he'd somehow managed to get.

"Yes, sir."

At the mention of Candidate lessons, and any other thing, the youth had wanted to say he still valued being an Apprentice over being Searched. In all honesty it had taken a good deal of coaxing from some of the others at the Hall to get the boy to come to Ista, mostly talks about how a Dragonhealer with their own dragon would be too amazing for words, so he'd come along with the vague hopes that one day he'd be a Rider. It was a good pillow dream at most, what with the dozens and dozens of others sharing rooms and lessons, leaving Liniyie to think he'd be better off with a firelizard. . . should one ever come his way. Which he doubted.

"Of course, and by your leave then."

“And there’s no need to call me ‘sir’. My name’s Cordel. I promise you, I’ll answer to that name. If you try calling ‘sir’ in the Infirmary, you’ll just get everyone else’s attention instead of mine.” Well, now for a little test… the Healer glanced around the room, searching for something to start with. Something easy, but still something that would give Liniyie a bit of a jolt. For La, it had been helping Menalia hatch, but this case was different. Everyone was different, after all, and Liniyie seemed a bit more flighty than the girl.

Eventually, Cordel’s blue eyes settled on one thing. He grinned. Perfect… “Try picking her up,” he said, waving a hand at Tribble. “Don’t worry; she’s very gentle and doesn’t bite. I simply want to make sure you can pick up a firelizard properly without harming them. If you do anything wrong, I’ll stop you.”

Tribble churred, looking mildly worried at all of this. Her wings fluttered against the air, but she stayed on the desk, eyeing both males carefully. There was a distinct hint that she would, at any sudden movements, leap into the air. Or sudden noises, for that matter. She was simply naturally nervy.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 23, 2009 10:04 pm

" . . . . "

For a moment, Liniyie sat silent looking down at Tribble, before he raised his eyes back up towards the man on the other side of the table. He didn't like being tested in ways were passing and failing could be done through different means, but he had a feeling that this is what Cordel meant when he said his way of teaching was 'unconventional'. Slowly a thin smile crept across his lips, and an expression of accepting the challenge drew to his eyes. Pass or fail, he'd get to touch a firelizard somehow. That was a bonus.

When the smile stayed on his face for a few more moments it slowly relaxed, his eyes taking back their gentle looks of interest that they had when looking at the flit before. He'd been watching her, he really had, so some things had had been noticing. She had come near him, yet kept more than enough distnace between them to easily retreat back to her master, so it meant that she was curious yet still quite cautious. She was verbal with her emotions, her little churrip clear indication, which to Liniyie meant she could be overly nervous and would probably bolt if he did something without thinking.

Normally he would not even think about touching another person's flit without their permission, or even having them hold it first, but it seemed like Cordel had given a go-ahead, so he started to move. He softly rubbed the tips of his fingers together, creating a small sound that wasn't too sudden or too loud, but at enough to garner attention should the firelizard look over to him. He was glad for once that he'd had his hands above the table and not in his lap, so their movements could be done slowly and without too many jerky motions.

" . . . .hello there."

He felt stupid, being tested like this, even though he'd made himself accept the challange. Still, talking to the firelizard was no different from talking to anything else - he had to speak clearly and without any fear or hesitation in his voice. His tone was calm, his feelings were calm. If he did this right he should be able to get her to move closer to him, enough that she would either climb on him of her own accord or let him at least touch her, but he felt he wouldn't be nearly that lucky.

". . . .if it's alright with you, I would like to touch you. You seem a bit too flighty for me to reach for without any warning."

Still, he paused the motion of his fingers when his hand drew closer to the Green, perhaps only a few inches away from the base of her legs. He wouldn't move his arm anymore.

Oh, the test wasn’t so simple as pass or fail. The only way Liniyie would outrightly fail was if he refused to even attempt to pick up Tribble. Cordel had no use for a dragonhealer who refused to deal with firelizards and neither would anyone else. He also had no use for an Apprentice who didn’t follow orders or at the very least treated them as polite suggestions.

Right now, he simply waited. Patience wasn’t something he was usually good at, but with this, he could wait. And watch.

At the soft noises, Tribble chirruped and tilted her head to one side. Something was happening, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was. Not quite yet. With an anxious chitter, she glanced over at Cordel, trying to gain some confidence from his presence. It didn’t work, since Liniyie spoke right when she wasn’t looking at him. Startled, the firelizard flared her wings and, for a moment, looked as if she would launch herself off the desk. She didn’t care for this… and he was moving closer too! She cautiously backed away from the hands, making sure to keep them well within sight. Oh, no! She wasn’t going to be easily fooled into looking another way!

Once he finally stopped moving, Tribble calmed down a bit or at least she folded her wings daintily. After he failed to move---or explode, or burst into flames, or whatever she was so convinced he might do if she dared look away from him----she even plucked up enough courage to sniff his fingers.

Eventually, Cordel felt moved to speak. “She’s not the type to jump into a stranger’s hands, Liniyie,” he said, sounding almost kind. Maybe that’s just because he was talking about his firelizard; most owners were afflicted with a curious inability to notice their own pet’s problems and issues. Instead of being problems, they were adorable quirks.
