So I don't know about you guys, but I'm loving the fact that Broadway musicals are suddenly making a resurge on to film. biggrin First Chicago, which was a huge box office hit, then Phantom, Rent and now The Producers. Its an odd change from the last 10 years where big screen film musicals were practically non-existent. What do you think? Good/Bad? Are they being done justice on screen and how you think this trend will affect the theatre district? Oh Oh! And which musical do you guys want to see made into a movie next, if at all??

Chicago was the best MADE one so far... but I never liked Chicago and therefore I didn't really like the movie. So I said Rent. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than Phantom.

First, has anyone noticed that in the commercials for the Producers, there aren't any musical numbers? Shouldn't that tip people off that it's gonna suck?
Unfortunately, all of the movie versions of those shows changed stuff. Chicago left out one big thing, but it is the best of the movies. I hate to admit it, but Phantom of the Opera is better than Rent. Movies, I mean. The play Rent is better than Phantom of the Opera.

Oh I love it. Phantom is my absolute favorite, followed by Chicago. I'm not particularly fond of Rents music, but I do plan to see the movie simply because its a musical on screen, and thereby deserves my support. I think one reason I love the whole broadway to hollywood thing is because even though I absolutely LOVE musicals, but dont really get to see them, and putting them in movies not only adds effects you dont get in shows, it just plain makes it more possible to see. I would LOVE to see Wicked done as a movie. I havent been able to see it, but I love the music, and would do the uber happy dance if it were a movie. And I'm not sure how great it would be as a movie, but I have always adored Miss Saigon, and would love to see it as a movie too.

Personally my favorite musical to be made into a moive by Hollywood was Guys and Dolls, but you are talking about more modern movies xp Chicago is the best on out of all the movies you listed, followed by Phantom of the Opera and finally Rent.

I thougth Chicago was over sexed up... In comparison to say Cabaret... And Phantom was not done justice. Screw Rent in the ear and sideways.

I think Chicago was better made because it was technically not taken off of the stage...I mean, whenever it hits a musical number it cuts over to a filmed stage. While it's actually my third favorite musical of the ones you named, I still think it trumps the other two...sorry guys. Plus I love Rob Marshall! Can't wait to see Memoirs of a Geisha...

I love it, I wrote an article about it for my newspaper. I think its good because it makes these awesome musicals available to more people, including myself, who don't have access to them otherwise. I think Rent is my favorite one to be done thusfar, but Phantom and Chicago were both really good. I didn't really like the cut to stage thing in Chicago, I'd rather it just be a musical the whole way through. Phantom probably translate to film the best of the three I just like Rent better.

I think making Chicago a film was a great idea, and structurally it worked really well, and they were able to keep all but one of he numbers in, I think. That's why it got all thse Oscars.
The movie of Rent was pretty good, but the musical is obviously soooo much better. It's sad that they changed so much of the singing into sspeech and had to replace the Snow song with that weird commencment scene (seriously, what was UP with that confused ) Still, it was gritty enough, and they didn't sugar it up or anything stupid like that.
I haven't seen the POTO movie yet, but I really want to. And The Producers looks like it's going to be reeeeally good. mrgreen

Out of curiousity, does anyone know of any other Broadway musical movies in the making (with the exception of Producers)?

Sunset Boulvard is a go the last time I heard. They cast Glen Close in it. I heard rumors of a Bombay Dreams movie. God I hope not. And there are ongoing whispers about a remake of Hairspray with the music (kinda like Producers did). Only, there is serious talk of John Travolta playing Edna o.O?

There's rumors of Wicked going to the bigscreen too. I'm not quite sure if that's a good thing or not yet though. Some of the stuff I've heard makes me want to crawl in a corner and die (like Britney Spears playing Glinda) but it'd be good if they could do it soon and have the original cast in it. Though the chances of that are kind of slim confused

I think Rent was wonderful. It's a tie between Rent and Chicago for my favorite musical to movie. I hated PoTO. I don't know why so many people like it. MAybe I don't like it cuz Andrew Lloyd Webber just doesn't do anything for me. I loved rent b/c it was like the musical. They did an awesome job with it in my opinion.

I voted for rent, but chicago is a close second. I just loved everything about chicago. But rent=my life (not in the literal sense. I mean, I'm very obsessed with it.) Wilson Jermaine Heredia was so amazing He was just...amazing. And everyone else, I loved them. THe Mimi coming to life scene couldve been better, and hte santa fe set was cheesy..u know, with roger up iun the mountains...+but i think if it wasnt for the cheesy santa fe set, nobody would have stopped crying for like...ever.
chicago was sup[er. i loved how everyone's story was turned into a musical number. that was so much fun to watch and creative. I loved richard gere-who knew he could sing and dance? I didn't. I just love the attitude of the whole musical. It's jsut...amazing.
(how many times have i said amazing? sorry.))
phantom was good too, but like, it was less than what I expected of it. (and im pretty easy to please) first of all, they completely changed hte ending. I did like the beginning auction/chandelier scene, that waws very good. well come to think of it the ending wasnt too bad, but i miss the monkey dancing!!! (i saw the show before the movie). And I didn't think thsat the singers were the best. Gerard wasnt the one singing (someone else idk who was dubbing) emmy rossum has a very good voice, and i think she did a great job, but her voice wasnt trained to sing opera, but her overall appearence is what i imagined christine to look like so it was pretty good.
that is all.
