It almost seemed redundant to patrol the far side of the Dhati territory, Skugga thought. The Mizimu scum hardly knew they existed, so why would they sneak around the Dhati territory - that was unknown to them - and attack the other side? But they had been told to patrol here, and Mazi kept her company today, so she wasn't complaining. It was hard to stay completely focused on the task at hand, however, and she might not be as vigilant as she should have been.

But who could blame her? Nothing had happened so far, and the only creature they had seen was some kind of bird in the distance. Staying silent and watchful seemed less and less important.

"This is really boring," she finally said, breaking the silence, "Why couldn't they have sent us to a stretch of the border where there's at least a chance for some action?"

She wouldn't have minded to meet the so called warrior she had encountered when skulking about near Mizimu lands. She was sure the two of them could have killed him easily and the thought made her smile.

Things were becoming more routine for him. Mazimwi was unsure of what was going on in the higher politics of the Dhati but he was too enveloped in his own personal problems. His meeting with Yuusa had shaken him slightly when he realized what he had done but Mazimwi had quickly snapped himself out of that mindset. They were in a war. There was no time for menial distractions.

"Be patient, Skugga." The lion was keeping his focus on the surroundings because you could never know what was going to happen on a simple patrol. Everything had been quiet for a long time and he knew the Dhati was incapable of staying out of the Mizimu's way.

"Who knows. Something interesting could happen tonight but only if you stop complaining." Playfully smirking at her, Mazimwi hoped that she would relax a bit. Things were getting rather boring though... A little action would be nice now but a lot more came with 'just a little action.'

It was strange for a Mizimu'Tungika Scryer to stray this far from home, but Skuld frequently wandered and usually found peace doing so. This time she hadn't found all the insights she had hoped she would, but nevertheless she needed to head back home. Both her niece and the veteran that had seen her off would probably hunt her down if she extended her trip, and she had promised to meet Skadi. She had stalled as much as she could now, any more and she would be late. She decided to take a shortcut and not go back the winding way she had walked to get here. Skuld didn't know this yet, but she would have cause to regret this decision later.

Taking some time off to read her bones outside of the Mizimu territory usually calmed her down and made her think more clearly, but this time was different. The new bone she had aquired... It was disturbing. When she tried to read using it, or sometimes even when she was carrying it, the Spirits showed her terrible things. The other explanation, and Skuld barely dared to think about it, was that she was going mad, and that the Spirits weren't responsible for showing her these visions.

Whatever the cause, the fact that the visions kept occurring made her even more sure that she needed to talk to Skadi about this. If the worst happened and she did go mad, she wanted to make sure that someone she trusted knew what to do.

"So that's the way it works, eh?" Skugga said and grinned as she rolled her eyes at Mazimwi, "Fine, fine, I'll stop."

She scouted in silence for a while, trying to stay vigilant. But since she didn't really expect anything exciting to happen it took a few heartbeats for her to register what she saw when a lion appeared in their line of vision. Mizimu. It didn't make sense, but there she was. Skugga had seen that bone mask before, and when she strained her ears she could hear the faint noise of metal she knew came from a strange looking bracelet and a short chain connected to it.

"She's Mizimu," Skugga hissed, and her face distorted in an angry snarl, "And she's of the heart. We should kill her."

Mazimwi grinned at her once more and scanned the horizons around them. There didn't seem to be anything in sight but the lands were very deceiving. Lions could be lurking everywhere... but with there luck, nothing interesting would happen tonight. They could be sparring right now but even they needed to rest sometimes.

Pausing for a moment, the lion felt a change in mood and realized that Skugga's demeanor changed. He stood to attention and looked around and noticed a dark colored lion in the distance. Mazimwi wasn't sure what to do. Skugga was already ready to attack but he didn't like attacking without provocation.

"Let's go see what she's up to..." Mazimwi waited to see what Skugga was going to do.

One of Skugga's ears twitched and she itched to attack, but Mazimwi's words calmed her as usual. Fine... She crouched down low and stalked closer to the Mizimu lioness moving with the same deliberation as a hunter stalking her prey. In Skuggas mind there was only one thing this old hag could be doing. Spying. Meddling. She walked around as if she owned this place, and it made her furious.

"Probably a spy," she whispered to Mazimwi, not taking her eyes from the erratically moving lioness. "Good thing we're here and can make sure she doesn't report back." Her tail twitched as the Mizimu hag changed directions once more and turned her back to them, starting to wander away.

Skugga wasn't too far off in her assumption, but the old lioness didn't act as if she was moving with a purpose. The "spy" herself was currently debating how to best use the news from Haini when she got back home. She had talked to some lower ranking friends in the Claw about his role in the Dhati, but she didn't know what they did with the information she relayed. She assumed they put it to good use and passed on the relevant bits to the higher ranking warriors and veterans.

Skuld debated spreading the news that many of the missing Sacrifices hadn't gone willingly a bit wider. It would do good for her pride members morale to know that their Sacrifices hadn't just abandoned them. Well... Some had abandoned them, or wanted to, but she didn't want to think about how she knew that. But now she was just stalling again and she knew it... She shifted the bones in her mouth, trying to decide on the best way home.

Mazimwi was much more calm than Skugga when they were dealing with Mizimu lions. He wasn't so hasty to try and kill them unnecessarily. He didn't criticize Skugga though; he knew that she was just getting anxious. Everybody was; it was bad for a group of restless lions to wait for something to happen. He continued to stalk her wondering what Skuld was doing so close to the Dhati lines.

This lioness looked tough but he felt that they could overpower her. She couldn't stand a chance against him; they had trained a lot and they were ready to take on anything. He whispered to her, "What do you want to do?" He wanted to let Skugga do whatever she wanted especially if it let her release some steam.

Instead of answering the question Skugga used one of their simpler signs. Attack. Dead Mizimu spies couldn't talk, and this old hag would make for good target practice as far as she was concerned. She leapt into action, quickly covering the distance to the dark lioness. She managed to jump and grab hold of her hind quarters, hoping to be able to get the other off balance quickly. Once on the ground she would be easy to take out.

Skuld was totally unprepared of the attack. Later on she would come to understand the subtle hints from the Spirits that she had seen in her bones. They had made little sense at the time, but she was sure there had been warnings before the attack. Warnings that she hadn't been able to understand at the time, but then the Spirits were rarely direct. She should have known better.

She did hear a noise behind her but before she could decide if she should turn back to look or not claws connected with her hindquarters. The claws hadn't made any serious damage but the sudden addition of another lioness weight made her stumble and it wouldn't take much for her to lose her footing completely.

Used to Skugga acting on impulse, Mazimwi followed after her and attempted to cover her not directly attacking the other lioness. At this point, he still had a conscious about killing other lions in cold blood even if they were part of the Mizimu. They didn't know why she was here and Mazimwi was always the more cautious of the two lions.

He watched Skugga tackle the lioness and he circled around the other side of Skuld. Even though he knew she wouldn't be able to take him, Mazimwi had to be sure. He would let Skugga have a little fun for now but he had no intention of letting Skugga kill today. Mazimwi watched Skuld carefully predicting her possible moves; it didn't seem like she wanted a fight but Skugga wasn't asking.

Skuld had never intended to get close enough to the Dhati rebels to be spotted, but she had apparently misjudged the extent of their territory and their patrols. The thought that she might meet hostile lions had crossed her mind, and her preferred course of action would be to try to bluff herself out of it. Claim she was just an old lioness passing by or that she was on their side, just ask her good friend Haini. But the lioness that attacked her was a vaguely familiar one, and she attacked with such ferocity that Skuld had little hope of talking her out of it.

"Why are you attacking me," she called, sounding more desperate and distressed than she liked, "I'm just a harmless old lioness passing by. I'm sorry if I've trespassed."

She rolled over on her back, trying to use her paws to protect the more vital parts of her body, and her claws to try to keep her attacker away.

"Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit," Skugga shouted, emphasizing each word with a pawstrike. "You're Mizimu-scum and we know it. It's time to pay."

It wasn't entirely clear what this old lioness was supposed to pay for, but right now she embodied everything Skugga hated about the Mizimu. She was everything bad that had ever happened, and every nasty twisted interpretation of the spirits that the Mizimu preached as truth. Skugga pounded and pounded with her paws, even going to the effort of pulling her claws in to make sure she didn't finish her enemy off too quickly.

"Get her mask," she growled and tried to hold down the squirming Scryer, "Not so cocky without her mask, I don't think."

A less impulsive lion, Mazimwi didn't doubt that the other lioness was Mizimu but he didn't want to attack her without provocation or something. He was less inclined to attack without thinking unlike Skugga. He didn't see any harm in letting Skugga take out her frustration and anger right now and he wasn't going to stop her... yet.

Crouching low, he was waiting to see if the lioness was going to attack back but so far she was just defending herself. "Don't get carried away Skugga." He called out to her watching Skugga swipe repeatedly and he was basically there to make sure Skugga didn't kill her. Moving over to the two lionesses, Mazimwi hesitated for a second but then swiped the mask off of Skuld's face making sure not to scratch her in the process.

The relentless attacks from Skugga were so vicious that Skuld failed to notice that the male was holding back and actually trying not to hurt her. And the Scryer didn't like being stripped of her mask very much at all judging by the hiss and the way she tried to claw at Mazimwis face. Unfortunately that impulsive move let down her guard, and made her even more vulnerable for attack from the purple lioness.

Skugga was beyond talking at this point, and the sounds she was making were limited to grunts and growls as she tried to pound the living daylight out of her foe. The attack on Mazimwi only served to enrage her further and she moved on from Skuld's body to her face, landing a lucky strike square on her jaw. This evil lioness embodied everything she hated about Mizimu and if she had her way she'd beat up the old hag until the entire Mizimu hurt.

Mazimwi backed up and frowned as he watched Skugga attack Skuld. She wasn't listening to him. Ironic considering he was supposed to be the brawn and her the brain. The lion waited a bit longer and then decided that this was going to far. Mizimu or not, he wasn't going to let Skugga have blood on her hands already.

Moving towards the two, Mazimwi made a decision and swiftly pushed Skugga aside and off of the other lioness. He looked at her decisively and said, "That's enough." Hopefully Skuld would be smart and run away while he distracted Skugga for a few moments.

Skugga responded to the sudden tackle with a guttural snarl halfway between an adult lions "back off, this is my prey" and a cubs whiny growl when a toy is taken away. She seemed to calm down when she realised it was just Mazi, however. Enough? Why? The b***h wasn’t dead yet. Oooh... The lioness slowly went from pout to grin as she realised what Mazimwi must have meant.

"I like your thinking," Skugga said with a dangerous grin, "Why give her an honourable death when we can leave her out here to rot?"

She emphasized her statement by kicking one of the bones that the old hag had dropped. The fight hadn't quenched her blood thirst, and she still itched to fight, but she was going to listen to Mazimwi. This rotten Mizimu lioness didn't deserve an honourable death in combat. She hissed in the general direction of her broken opponent and started to walk away, not caring that she stepped on and broke one of the brittle bones that lay scattered after the fight.

"Your Spirit will be lost out here," Skugga called over her shoulder. "Serves you right since your whole pride has turned from the Spirits."

--

No one messed with Skuld's bones. No one. But unfortunately she was in no shape to protect her precious diving tools, and in no shape to run when the abuse had finally stopped. She had thought she would die under the claws of the disgraced Sacrifice, but when she realised what these two rebels had planned for her she desperately wanted to survive, if only to spite them.

But her sudden will to live would only take her so far out here, and at the moment she wasn't even capable of moving. Skuld stayed put, eyes closed and hoped that the two wouldn't change their mind. The crack of brittle bone provoked a reaction, but moving her head sent stars flashing across her field of vision. That had been one of her bones, but Skuld found it hard to hang on any longer and she slowly slipped into darkness.
