It seems that everyone has their own mini guidelines, favorite items and flow to a miss matched avatar. What, to you, makes a good miss matched outfit? What items really work? Is it totally mismatched or is there some form of organization? Is there different rules for cluttered or not? Please post your personal guidelines on this avatar style. Please try giving examples and really explaining it out.

Mismatching avatars.
There are two kinds I do. The difference lies in the colors.

Different colors:

For this one, I went with different colors. A tip would be to start at the head, then work your way down. Fill in multiple layers, like shirt, vest, skirt, shorts, socks, shoes. On this I chose not to use gloves or many head items or accessories. These colors, while different, blend. They are all bright, Easter-like colors (except on the feet, which I don't really like feet).

Closer colors:

On this one, I used dark-colors. Same thing, start at the head a work your way down. I used all grays, browns, etc, except for the face, because I usually always leave my avatars like that. The purple shirt is thrown in for relief of all the dark. The clover-tie thing adds some texture, as well as the vest and pants. Texture is good.

That's all, I guess. Remember, all that matters is that you like your avatar!

@ RLew: So it really is about colors using like colors and throwing in a distraction or like colors to create an over all look.

Well, you want the colors to be balanced out so you can have a flow. But, as in the second avatar, all dark-colored items looks yuck unless you really pull it off, and that's why I have the purple shirt. So colors are important, to provide flow and balance.

I have a question for anyone who is skilled in this mismatching style...would this qualify as one?

I made this a long time ago and just recently found it again.
I'm trying to put it in a category other than "Random"

To me non-matching is in groups.
You have your colours group, and your textures group.
Colours are either dull or bright. Also you stick to the colour groups of 'cool (Blues, Greens, ect...)' and 'warm (Reds, browns, etc...)' If I do a dull colour avatar I mostly add in one bright colour (Like Lew) to make it pop a bit more. Sometimes it is the same with Warm and Cool colours. You add in a tiny bit to make it pop.
With texture you pick if you want soft, round texture or lots of little lines and make it seem prickly and like there is a lot more on an outfit then there is.

It sort of matches to much XD Don't worry that is the problem I had when i first started. Just search through tektek for stuff that has that rough texture in the cool colours. Add lots of accessories and stuff.

I knew I didn't say enough there.
I'll do it in tekteks as it will be eaiser.
Good rough texture items are those that have detail. The more detail the better. See how the body is very prickly looking while the hat is soft and doesn't have that detail?
User Image
You can use items like the hat but you'd have to use a lot of head items that do have texture to make it match the texture of the body.
With the same hat but with detailed items above it:
User Image
I also added some things to the face.
It still isn't as detailed as the body but it is getting there.

For soft it is exactly the same.
Items with little detail are key. These can look really cool when you do lots of layers, but not detail.
The example is a little rushed as I have to get ready to go out but I hope you get the point:
User Image
It has a few layers but not detail, all the items are sort of blobs of colour. I am not too good with these but yeah i hope you see what I am talking about. Also this one sort of matches too XDD
Anywho I hope your not reading this with this on your face: @.@

Some other textures are Shiny and Stripes, shiny goes good with soft texture and stripes goes well with rough/prickly.

Hum that is really good info memo thanks for all of that. I don't know to me that looks a lot like a matching avatar just because of them being like colors (warms) spread all around the avatar and that's just how I match I guess ^^;

It is probably because I was focusing more on the texture then the colours. XD Also for the prickly one I was just looking through brown and noth other colours. But you are most welcome =)
