Eiry awoke with a very strange feeling.
He moved his fingers through his minty hair, swallowed the taste of morning from his mouth, and rubbed his eyes. Eiry awoke to the cold morning air, when the sun had barely woken up itself to open its own great golden eye in the east. The sun was merely blinking now, still hidden by the trees and melting an ooze of peach into the cold of the blue sky.
Eiry lifted himself from his twin-sized bed, and glanced around sleepily. He had pushed his blankets off his bed again.
His room is more of a garage than anything. It was the place he worked on many of his ideas and crafts, his tricks. Book cases lined his bed frame against the wall, and everywhere else was cork board, filled with scribblings of poetry and blue prints for tricky machines and plans. Paper and books even cluttered around the floor in piles, curling into the corners. Things of importance, like the shiny things he found in the attic or acquired from elsewhere, hung from nets in the corner of his room, a strange dream catcher of knickknacks and trinkets. Even his dresser was covered in paper and books, lanterns, and half-finished personal projects of mischief. In the farthest corner of his bedroom, stacked against the door that led to the conjoining patio with Rivener's room was a stack of three cardboard boxes that Eiry often played in. It was the willowisp's paradise.
The strange feeling came again, this time more strongly. It was a stretching sensation, a weird expanding in his chest like a balloon that pushed at everything in his body a way that it wasn't meant to be pushed. Eiry leaned forward in his bed and held his chest for a moment with his grey hand, squeezing his eyes tight.
"Nnmh..."
When the feeling dulled finally, Eiry opened his eyes and breathed. He gave a pump to his ethereal wings, picked himself up from the bed and floated out, but the feeling came again, even stronger. Eiry dropped to the floor and held his chest again. When he was able to open his eyes he looked down at his chest, as if to see the problem when he noticed something else more disturbing than the feeling.
He was intangible.
Eiry blinked. He wasn't willing himself intangible, but there he was, slightly translucent....And getting more by the second. It looked like he was fading. He could see through himself now, and he was getting fainter, and fainter. Worry seized him and Eiry, his eyes locked on his disappearing hand, gave a shrill scream.
"RIIIVVEENNEEEEEEERRRR!!!!"

The Scorpion usually slept rather late, waking only around mid-morning at the earliest. Staying up all hours feeding on starlight, moonlight, and black velvet skies made it rather difficult to will oneself out of warm blankets when the sun had only just begun to rise. Today, however, Rivener found himself bolting upright in his bed when the very first rays of light streamed in around the heavy curtains. He could almost think he'd only dreamed it, a chilling nightmare, if only the screaming wasn't still audible.
Eiry was screeching for him!
Panicking, not for a moment thinking that this might be a trick, Riv flung his covers aside and dashed out onto his balcony, throwing open Eiry's door and appearing in a flying explosion of cardboard boxes. Wide, wild red eyes sought out their likeness, finding them on the floor. "Eiry! What's... EIRY!" After a moment, the last vestiges of sleep fled Rivener's mind and he processed more clearly what he saw. His brother was intangible, fading, and for once it didn't seem like the minty frei was enjoying this at all! Leathery wings flapping frantically, sending papers and schematics fluttering away, Rivener lowered to his brother's side. "Holy ********, Eiry, what do I do? What do I do? Should I call Isi? Aphi? Dr Kyou or Dr Tsu? Someone else? What's going on?!"
Calm down, it's obvious the boy can't answer you, a small logical part of Riv's brain told him. Don't panic or you'll just make him panic worse. Taking a deep breath, Rivener closed his eyes for a moment and tried to collect himself. "Are you in pain?" He asked, a question that Eiry WOULD be able to answer.

Eiry stopped screeching when finally Rivener appeared in his bedroom, knocking over his tower of cardboard boxes. He was still clutching his chest from what Rivener could still see of him, a translucent form of Eiry, rather like a jellyfish. He tried to flap his ethereal wings, which were flickering like a dying flame, but they spluttered weakly in reply. He reached out for Rivener, wanting to hold onto his brother, but his hand passed straight through him. Panicked by this discovery as well as mirroring Rivener's own panic twice over, the quickly disappearing raevan panted and started to wail more, trying to reply to all the questions.
Though, when he spoke, it sounded like he were behind a wall, underneath the earth or screaming through a mouthful of stuffed cotton.
"Rivener! Brother! Brother, no idea have I! I-I...! My chest, everywhere, feels strange, brother, it hurts like...! Brother, I don't want to fade away! I can't make it stop!" Eiry bleated helplessly to his brother, "No will am I using in this! It's just...Brother, help! I don't want to disappear!"

Rivener was trying to remain calm but his face was betraying him. Dark eyebrows were knotted up in anguished concern and the red eyes flashed with fear. Hearing Eiry wailing like that, sounding from so far, begging for help and complaining that it hurt and felt strange... It broke Riv's heart! Even that pale hand that had reached for him only to pass through, leaving cold in its wake that spread all through the Sigel's blood...
"It's okay, Eiry, shh. Just stay calm, we can figure this out. We can f-figure... We can figure this out." Rivener didn't know what to say. There was nothing he could do! There was nothing ANYONE could do! And as much as the Scorpion wanted to exclaim that he'd never let anything happen to his little brother, this WAS happening.
Desperate for something, anything at all to inspire him, Rivener straightened a little and glanced around quickly. He hoped something would jump out at him, Look here, this will work! or Hey, a schematic for turning disappearing bodies into solids! But no, there were only books and lanterns and drawings of machines designed to tip glasses of water onto people.
The Scorpion's gaze then landed on the poster of the constellations that he'd gotten Eiry once. He gasped, recalling something he'd heard last night while he listened to the stars talking... Fading swirls will not be lost. A test before a gift. Swirls fading! The stars knew this would happen, and they said it was alright? It was a-... a test?
Turning his gaze back down to Eiry, Riv lay next to his brother and smiled as encouragingly as he could, trying not to look worried (even though he still very much was). Riv had been right about Xiu, so maybe he could believe he'd be right about this too. "It's gonna be alright, Eiry. This is going to pass. Just calm down, take deep breaths. It's just a test, Eiry, the stars told me so. You'll be okay."

Whatever words Rivener was rambling at him, Eiry could hardly hear them anymore. His vision was fading, closing in upon him like a distinct fog as he balefully held his brother in his sight. Eiry, weakening so that he laid upon his side on the ground, tried to stabilize his breathing. It was hard though, to even do that. With each passing moment there was less and less of him and there was less that he could see and hear. The youngest of the Delaran family gulped, and he curled his hands onto his chest, trying to push the feeling away. His wings had flickered away, like little flames they were against his back, like little will o wisp flames floating out on the marshes around their house.
Eiry strained his hearing. Rivener was saying something about it being okay...That it was going to pass. That was just the sort of thing that anyone would tell anybody as the jaws of inescapable fate closed about them. Eiry wanted to believe those words, but too many stories ended shortly after those comforting phrases.
A mere outline now, Eiry breathed faster, gasping as the world disappeared around him and as he disappeared from the world around Rivener. His cheek pressed against the cold floorboards, Eiry tried to keep his eyes on his brother's.
"Brother," he mouthed, his words strange hums of sound, "I'm so scared."
A moment later, Eiry broke the gaze with his brother, looking about his disappearing form, and screamed, but his scream wasn't to be heard.
Eirdirsceol had disappeared.

Rivener panicked. Things weren't getting better. Eiry wasn't coming back to reality. His voice was strange and far, his wings were gone... Had Rivener been wrong about the star-speak? Had it been talking about something else, someone else? Just as the Sigel was starting to doubt himself the most, Eiry faded clear out of existence.
Rivener gasped and sat bolt upright again, like he had in his bed this morning. This time it wasn't a scream that had prompted it, but a complete silence. Complete until Riv chose to break it, tears springing to his eyes and clawed fingers scratching chunks out of the hardwood floor, trying to get underneath as though it was hiding the minty frei. "EIRY! EEIIIIIRRRYYYYYYY~!!!!!!"
Sobbing, the Scorpion curled up on the floor, clutching at his head. He should have gotten Isi! He should have called doctor Tsu! Now Eiry was GONE and Rivener let it happen! He was RIGHT THERE, and he LET IT HAPPEN! The scream Rivener let out, at the top of his lungs, was easily heard throughout the entire house.

Isi startled from his bed, promptly falling out of it with a jerk of his legs and a scramble of his arms. Half asleep still, for he, like Rivener, was also not a morning person, Isi pushed himself up from the floor, hitting his head against his night stand.
"Ach! DAMN IT!" he shouted and he, wobbling, got himself onto his feet and ran out of his bedroom without his crutches, rubbing into wall corners and door frames as he did so. He heard Rivener scream. Not like any scream that he heard before. It wasn't a "Eiry just woke Rivener up with a bucket of cold water scream", neither was it a "Eiry snuck into Rivener's bed and surprised him when he woke" scream. It was something else that required immediate attention.
As he spun around the corner to the stairwell, the combination of Isi's bleary sight and his weak legs resulted in a trip, and a noisy tumble down the third flight of stairs. Thankfully, he was quite used to falling down the stairs (which happened increasingly often when Aphismet wasn't home) so he had managed to save himself from anything that hurt more than a few bruises.
"I hate these stairs! I hate ALL ******** stairs!" Isi growled aloud. He used the nearby wall to get himself up onto his feet and he rushed to Rivener's bedroom. It was to his surprise that Rivener wasn't in his bedroom at all. The door to the patio was open though, which meant that the scorpion raevan was in Eiry's room. Isi began stumbling in that direction when he heard more steps on the stairwell behind him.

Aphismet startled awake as well at Rivener's scream. It was a horrible sound, and one that, just as Isi thought, required immediate attention. Frowning, Aphi got to his feet and yanked on a t-shirt, rushing to his door. It was about this time he heard the dreadful tumble down the stairs, the sound always sending a mild heart attack through the chef. Thankfully, Isikoro grumbled up a storm at the bottom of the flight of steps, announcing that he was for the most part okay. Taking the stairs two at a time, Aphismet soon found himself on the landing near Isi as the boy pushed open the door to Eiry's room.
It was a mess in here, more so than usual. The balcony doors were open, boxes and paper flung everywhere, and Rivener was crumbled to the floor with bits of said floor ripped up all around. "Riv-" Aphi began, hurrying forward.
The Scorpion's head twisted around to spot the two humans and in a rare display of neediness Rivener flung himself against Aphi, clutching at the man tightly as tears rolled down the Sigel's face. When he spoke, Rivener's voice was hitching and loud, as Riv found it hard to sob, breathe, and talk all at once. "Eiry! He disappeared! Fading! Stars said a test, but-... it's not okay! He's gone! I let it happen, I'm so sorry! I thought it was okay! He just went away, right in front of me! Eiryyyyy!" Sobbing harder, Rivener buried his head in Aphi's shoulder.
The white-haired chef froze in complete shock as Rivener lunged at him, sobbing. Only after the Scorpion finished his short-of-breath rant did Aphismet think to lift his arms, wrapping them around his ward with a confused and highly concerned frown. "Wh-wha-..."

Grumpier than usual, Isi rubbed the back of his head where he had caught it with the flat of a stair step, "Jesus ******** christ, Rivener, Eiry probably just went through the floor again! He's probably on the first level or something. It's probably just another one of his god damned tricks again. Or maybe you were dreaming or something, Rivener." Bringing his arm down so that he could lean himself in the doorway, Isi pulled up his pajama pants that had slipped a bit in the mad rush to the second story. He glanced around his ward's room and it didn't look like anything had really changed. the blankets were on the floor, again, and Isi gave another angry grumble and stommped over to heft them back onto the bed.
"He always pushes off all his blankets and never bothers to pick them up again," he mumbled. Then he turned around, and looking at Rivener as he pressed tight to Aphi, Isi rubbed some of the sleep from his grey eyes. He spoke up again, "It's probably just a nightmare. I'll go find that rotten bag of mischief. He must be getting into your eggs again, Aphi, if he's up this early in the morning."
Isi hobbled back over to the doorway.

Rivener was too upset to argue about it with Isi. He certainly didn't want to hear himself yell that it was NOT a trick, that Eiry was NOT on the second floor. All Riv did was hang onto Aphi as though he'd disappear next, and hope to GOD that it was all a trick.
Aphismet, for one, put much more stock into Rivener's reaction than Isikoro did. The Scorpion was a proud sort, and he'd never break down like this unless something was horribly wrong. If there was a chance this was a trick, Riv would have acted much like Isi at the moment. If Riv had only had a nightmare, he never would have let anyone know, rather keeping it to himself to save his "cool" image. Aphi knew his Raevan well enough that he realized Rivener really thought he saw Eiry disappear in a way that was not normal...
"R-right, Isi, you go look for him and I'll take Riv back to his own room."
Carefully guiding the sobbing Scorpion, Aphismet walked out of Eiry's chambers and headed for Riv's. Once they were in there, Riv was slowly escorted to his own bed. "Rivener... what happened, really? Why are you so sure this isn't a trick?"
Riv sniffled and tried to gather himself to speak, frowning in concentration. He suddenly realized he was being a weakling and he needed to stop that. Clearing his throat, trying to play it off like he hadn't just been sobbing and clutching onto his guardian like a big baby, Riv tried to talk again. His voice was quiet and carefully controlled. "You should have heard him. He wasn't acting like any other time he went intangible. He was fading. And his voice was further and further away. And he was begging me to stop it, to help him. He said it hurt, and that he was scared. I told him it would b-be okay..." Riv's control was slipping the more he spoke, and it was about here that he broke down again, hiding in his bed with shoulders jumping from the sobs.

Isi gave a grumble and disappeared downstairs, hobbling and using the wall for support. As he descended the next flight of stairs, though, he made sure to clutch onto the hand rails. It took him some time to make it to the first floor, but as he checked around, opening doors and peering into rooms, Isi called out, "Eiry...Eiry. Eiiryyy...Eiry! Eiry, where are you? Come out, now. I said NOW, Eiry!"
He made his way into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door. The egg carton hadn't been disturbed and none of the other food-based occupants were out of place. Eiry hadn't been through the fridge. Isi mused for a few quiet moments, glanced over either of his shoulders, almost convinced that Eiry was going to pop out at him at any moment. When the minty ball of joy didn't appear, Isi pulled his mouth into a deep frown, slammed the egg carton back into the fridge and started checking the cabinets of the kitchen.
"He didn't get into the kitchen, Aph! I'm going to check outside!" Isi called upstairs, hoping that the chef would hear him. He finished checking all the cabinets and proceeded to look outside. He slid the backyard door open and stumbled across the grass towards the basement window. The still hadn't figured out how to get into the basement, but there was a small window that he could shout through. Perhaps Eiry was in there.
He bent down onto his knees and accidentally covered his knees with mud. Isi cursed vehemently to himself and leaned to the small window, pushing open as much as he could. "EIRY! Eiry, are you in there? Come on out here, I want to talk with you!"
But there was no reply.
Isi furrowed his brows, waited for a while, repeated his demands into the window and received nothing else but silence once again.
He got up and went to the tree house. He climbed up as much as could, shouted in the hollow of the house and disturbed Eiry's many pets that resided there, but he could still find no Eiry. Isi marched along the edges of their lawn, called out to the marshes. No minty raevan there. Isi visited his willow tree, no Eiry there either.
Tired, his legs trembling from the effort of walking without his crutches, Isi made his way to the porch and sat down. It was then that the doors to the Delaran house started opening and shutting, slamming loudly. Isi furrowed his brows, and tried to pull himself up from the ground.
"Aphi....Apphii!!" Isi's voice raised itself in a shout, getting louder with each time, "APHI!!"
And it was at that time, too, that things in Rivener's bedroom started falling from the shelves and desks. Rivener's paint flung itself to the ground and brushes flew into the air. Then the doors on the second floor started flinging themselves open and shut.

Aphismet could say nothing, placing a hand on Riv's back and rubbing softly, hoping the action was offering some kind of comfort to the Sigel. Sometime during all this, Aphi heard Isi call out from below that he was going to go look outside for the minty frei.
Rivener's sobs were slowing and he was mostly now hiding to cover up his embarrassed blush. That and preventing Aphismet from asking more questions. The pair remained as is, status quo, for the entire time Isi was out searching desperately for his Raevan.
Suddenly there was a horrible racket from downstairs, and both men sat upright in the bed (the third time this morning for Rivener, who couldn't take much more of these heart-thumping surprises), staring at the door. From outside Rivener's open balcony door the pair could hear Isikoro calling nervously for Aphi. Rivener glanced at the chef with a concerned frown, pointing at the balcony. "GO LOOK!" he said, although he hadn't really needed to.
Aphismet was on his feet and half-way to the balcony door when the racket from downstairs was explained in a very clear fashion. The door Aphi was running towards slammed shut and open again, as did Rivener's bedroom door, and as did every other door in the house from what the chef could tell! "What's going on!?" He asked, frowning, lifting an arm and dodging the books flinging off Rivener's shelves.
Rivener got up and hurried to Aphismet's side, keeping his wings open wide and deflecting as many projectiles as he could. It was hurting his wings a little when something hit the leather and pulled at it too much, but otherwise Rivener's strength and stamina was serving him well: he was a meat shield. "Duck, under the bed!" Riv suggested, ignoring his own puffy red eyes and focusing instead on being protective.
Before he could follow that order, Aphismet leaned closer to the balcony door and tried to yell out when it was open: "STAY OUTSIDE, ISI! DON'T COME IN!! GET AWAY FROM THE HOUSE!!" Once his warning was given, Aphi ducked as instructed, quickly followed by the Sigel. The two would wait out the chaos from under here.

Isi watched nervously from the porch as the doors opened and closed slamming themselves. He could hear all the cabinets inside shutting and opening. It sounded like thunder within the house. Isi tried to get up, but his legs were too weak to stand on their own now. He wanted to ignore Aphi's warning and jump in through the door, but he knew well enough that he couldn't do that now, not until he had rested for a bit.
"Aphi!!" Isi called again, his voice caught between frustration and worry, as he leaned back against the railing"APHI! WHAT'S GOING ON?!" Even though he was sure Aphi didn't know what was going on, he asked the question anyways. But it would be hard to hear him over all this racket.
The clanging doors continued on their raging percussion in the house for a few moments before. Then they all stopped.
But moments later, noise exploded from within the house again. This time, though, it was from the attic. Things were getting knocked to the floor and it sounded like a violent thunderstorm had just exploded in the upper floor.
...And there was a faint screeching from the attic.

Aphismet and Rivener had indeed not heard Isi's frantic question clearly, the slamming doors dulling it to a dull hum from outside. Both men were starting to get jittery as the cacophony continued, uninterrupted, for longer than either of them cared to count.
Then just like that, as suddenly as it had begun, everything stopped. Rivener looked at Aphismet and the chef did the same, eyes meeting in an unspoken question: Is it over? Rivener tentatively moved to leave the protective cover of his bed, but before he'd even crawled out an inch the noise began upstairs. Rivener froze, eyes wide, glancing at Aphismet again to ask if they should just stay down here when he heard it: a screeching!
With a gasp, Rivener snapped his head back around and screamed in reply. "EIRY!" ******** everything else, Rivener had to get up there NOW! With incredible strength the Scorpion shoved the bed clear off himself, sending the mattress falling over a few feet away. Riv was "on his feet" and rushing out the door a split second after, shouldering his way past doors regarless of if they were slamming or not. The attic door itself was knocked half off its hinges as Rivener burst into the attic, frantic red eyes looking around through the myriad of flying, falling objects. "EIRY!" he called again.
Aphismet flinched and covered his head when the mattress flew away. He only had time to peek up and see Riv zoom towards the stairs. Gritting his teeth, wondering what the hell was going on, Aphi got to his feet and hurried out to the balcony. "It's in the attic, now, Isi! Something was screaming, Rivener took off-... I'm coming to get you!" The chef ran inside and flew down the stairs as fast as he could, rounding the corner to the back door and flinging it open, reaching for his brother. "Come on, we have to go see!" The chef offered his back: it would take too long for Isi to hobble back up there.
