Alexis felt neither here nor there about English. On one hand he enjoyed the fictitious stories and poems they read every now and then. They were so inspirational when he found himself staring at a musical block. He couldn't count the number of songs that had been birthed after a second reading of The Most Dangerous Game or a Shakespearean sonnet. But, on the other hand...well.

He tapped his pen nonchalantly against his paper, looking over his writing assignment. Sure, his print was very neat and orderly, every letter sat on the line like it should, and they weren't cramped together...but nothing compared to the beauty of his calligraphy. All this writing...if only he could do it with his quill! If only he could do everything with his quill...but no.

A soft sigh escaped Alexis' lips and he shoved up his glasses forlornly. He could never do calligraphy anywhere outside the private confines of he room. Despite his large stature, he carried himself quite poorly. If he even let a breath of his hobby out to anyone in this school they would murder him alive...but not before terribly humiliating him first. And that was a strong enough driving force to keep him from writing a single word in calligraphy...

Alexis glanced to his left and right. Both students were working vigorously so...maybe a couple of words in calligraphy wouldn't hurt...

His pen scratched thick lines into the paper to give the letters a semblance of quill ink. Alexis Brecht the top of the paper read in beautiful, curling letters.

English class was perhaps one of the few classes that Howl was willing to let his creative juices flow publicly. At least, in these surroundings. Casually leaning against his hand and glancing towards a wall where a window should have been, the transfer student couldn't help but feel a bit stifled in this facility.

It was here that Howl seemed to have a different feel. Certainly, the structure still seemed the same as most of the other classes (though everything was much more lax than P.E.). Yet, what was written on paper was typically between himself and the teacher. Unless they needed to do peer editing or anything, but he'd get over that hurdle when the time came. It was in this class that his creativity could flow.

When it came to writing, Howl found it rather enjoyable. Returning his eyes back to his paper, he thoughtfully finished off his last written thoughts for the assignment, seeming to etch the letters skillfully in a rather elegant script. It wasn't quite calligraphy, but it was a much fancier version of cursive. Now that he was finished, he sat back in his chair, his posture still upright and proper. One of those advantages with finishing his work early meant he could indulge himself slightly in one of his other hobbies: People-watching.

The first stop his eyes took was on their teacher. However, there seemed to be little to nothing interesting going on there. Making certain to flip his paper over for now, he then began to look at the other students in front of him. Unknown to Alexis, Howl noticed the strange posture which this other boy seemed to be taking. And such was intriguing. Someone who shifted posture in such a fashion usually was hiding something and hoping the change in posture would serve as a shield. Silently, the feminine lad continued to watch Alexis, curious as to what would happen next from his current viewpoint.

After getting his name out, Alexis couldn't stop there. He had teased the creative beast in his head, and now it wouldn't sit idly by. Where he himself was very passive and shy, his creativity was aggressive in the way it forced itself through Alexis' limbs, almost like it was its own person.

Of course, that's not to say he wasn't totally in control of his creative id. Rather than write more words in English, he chose to write the toughest looking German words that he could think of. Kontaktfreudig! Verantwortungsbewusst! Geistreich! They just meant adventurous, responsible, and witty, but hopefully they sounded tough enough that, should anyone catch a glimpse, it would be assumed he was writing swear words.

Alexis sat upright to crack his spine and observe his work, the smallest of smiles tugging at the corner of his lips, but only for a second as he realized that the teacher might make the same assumption that he wished his nosy classmates would make. Pushing up his glasses in mild irritation, Alexis tore the page our and set it on one side of his desk as he set to work copying the assignment onto another sheet of paper, completely forgetting to hide his "shameful" hobby.

If only Howl could see the front side of this other student, then he could have seen more exact emotions. From where he sat, the new transfer student could only hypothesize what sorts of emotions were running through this boy's mind as his body moved. For a while, the boy remained slightly huddled over his work. Then the boy's posture suddenly rose and straightened up, the faint popping sounds of the boy's spine reaching his ears. The sound of paper ripping soon followed, which the teal-haired lad found extremely strange. Even stranger, Howl could see from where he sat that the boy set the paper to the side of the desk where Howl's teal eyes could see.

Initially, the temptation to attempt looking at this boy's paper didn't even phase Howl. Instead, he raised a hand to smooth out the earrings that usually would be dangling from his ears. His fingers were greeted by air, which momentarily puzzled him.

Oh, it is so hard to break such simple habits he mentally mused, remembering why his dangling earrings were no longer in their proper spots. Silly school dress codes reducing him to wearing mere clear studs. He brushed his hair back slightly with the backside of his hand. Returning to his only sense of entertainment for the hour, the lad seemed to think deeply about the possibilities. The other student was writing again, but seemed to move his head back and forth. It seemed like he was rewriting whatever it was on the previous piece of paper.

Most certainly, he must have wrote something on the paper which would not be appropriate to turn in. Or perhaps he drew a picture, and was afraid that the drawings were not good or would earn the scorn of his fellow classmates. Once more Howl's hand went up to reach for the non-existant gems that were supposed to be hanging from his ears, and once more he grabbed onto nothing. Mentally debating between the two possibilities, the lad's eyes casually attempted to take a glance at the paper, but found he was just too far to actually see the content. It didn't seem like there were any pictures, but he couldn't be 100% certain at this distance.

The professor glanced up at the clock and announced that there were five minutes left to complete the assignment. Poor Alexis seized so hard that his desk screeched an inch back and the paper he had been copying from fluttered to the ground, sliding across the dirty linoleum to Howl's foot.

A cold sweat broke out across the boy's pale face and he peeked up from his new paper to the teacher who was staring squarely at him. Blue eyes dart to the paper and then back to the professor and back to the paper again. Alexis didn't dare to move any other part of his body. "S-sir..." he stuttered quietly. The teacher waved a hand, allowing him to leave his seat to fetch his paper.

Alexis promptly stood up from his seat, the chair slamming into the desk behind him. "Th' ******** bro?!" the boy behind him hissed, wiping the drool off the side of his mouth and promptly falling back asleep before he could stutter out an apology.

"Dumb dumb DUMB. This was a dumb idea!" he thought angrily at himself as he slouchily made his way over to his escaped paper, mumbling an apology to Howl's foot as he picked up the piece of paper and returned to his desk to scrawl out the last paragraph onto his new paper, his script showing his frustration as letters turned jagged and became squashed together.

Though Howl did enjoy observing people, he was not necessarily an extremely nosy person. It was not in his nature. However, his curiosity snagged along the smooth edges of the other student's paper.

And then fate struck. The poor boy's paper seemed to have a mind of its own, for it just up and found its way to Howl's feet. At first, the long-haired lad looked at the paper. He had finished his work, so there would be no problem in picking up the paper and handing it back to the boy with a smile, right? Leaning over in a graceful motion, he picked up the paper between his fingers, casually glancing and noticing the whole reason for this boy's uncertain mannerisms.

Even though this "Alexis" seemed to find his use of script to be an embarrassment, Howl could not help but smile and appreciate the penciled in elegance. He held out this boy's paper.

"Here you go, Alexis." was all he'd dare to whisper at the moment. This would not be the end of the situation for Howl though. Already in his mind, he was planning to approach this boy about his lettering. Howl smiled kindly to the other student, but his smile also seemed to contain a small bit of excitement to it as well.

"Pass your papers forward," the teacher said in a loud, clear voice to wake up the students that had inevitably fallen asleep. Alexis couldn't help but catch the bored, tired tone in the voice and wonder just how many of the teachers here actually wanted to be here. After all, which of these boys actually wanted to be in this school? He had lost count of the number of times he had heard grumblings about being in a "sausage-fest" school and the lack of basic freedoms. Alexis didn't mind the "sausage-fest" as they called it, but the militaristic treatment...that he could do without.

"HEY f*****t," the kid behind him hissed and smacked a handful of papers across the back of his head. Apparently he'd been trying to get his attention for a good two minutes.

"The students. I could deal without them too," he thought angrily and snatched the papers, adding his rewritten one to the pile and passing them forward. The other paper he hurriedly crumpled up and shoved it into a pocket of his backpack. He hadn't gotten a good look at the boy his old paper fluttered to, but if he was anything like the guy behind him (and the odds were that he was) he would give him s**t about it the moment the bell rang. Alexis glanced up at the clock, 15 seconds. Fifteen seconds for yet another jab at his sexuality. Urrrgh.

When the bell rang, Howl rather promptly placed a hand on the other boy's shoulder.

"Alexis, was it? I could not help but notice the script you wrote on that paper you just put in your pocket." He was up front and rather polite about the situation. He slowed down slightly and eventually stopped just outside of the classroom.

"Do you practice calligraphy in your spare time?" he asked calmly, but with a voice that still seemed completely interested.

Alexis had tried desperately to bolt out of the classroom the moment the bell rang. Unfortunately so did the rest of the class, and they were far more adept at rudely shoving their way through their peers than he was and ended up being one of the last ones to step through the door. And despite knowing what was going to happen before it did, the boy still went as stiff as a corpse the moment he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Y-yes..." he muttered dejectedly in response to the first question, his head hanging down like a timid puppy. When Howl mentioned the paper he let out a soft, tired sigh and mentally braced himself. "Here it comes. I'm a f**, I'm a girl, I'm a little f** girl that wears daisy dukes."

"Isn't there someone else you could torture," he said, practically whimpering as he shifted uneasily. Alexis was so caught up in the worst-case scenario he didn't even notice that Howl was being a perfect gentleman, and actually sounded interested in the hobby he found so embarrassing.

Before the lad had accused Howl of bad intents, the long haired boy kindly stated "It shows that you have spent much time practicing your letters."

And then came the accusation.

"Torture?" Having no ulterior motive or plans of teasing, Howl couldn't help but sound surprised. "Oh no, my dear lad, I just wanted to know how much time you spent practicing. I know I practice each evening about an hour with my lettering." He smiled quite kindly again, hoping the boy understood he was in the presence of a fellow calligraphy-goer.

"OH! OHHH!!!" Alexis practically yelled in Howl's face and stumbled back from the sheer shock of his compliment (which took a long time for him to process due to the unexpectedness of it, his brain had simply denied that it had been said before reality forced its way in). "OH. OH G-GOD. I'M S-SO S-SORRY." The poor boy was so embarrassed his face was akin to a cherry, and he couldn't stop screaming at Howl, no matter how many times he cleared his throat to try and force himself to speak in a normal tone.

Not only had this boy been kind to him, but he also practiced calligraphy with far more regularity (and far less shame) than he did. And what did Alexis do? He accused him of torturing him. And then screamed in his face. He really had to stop doing that.

It took several minutes, but Alexis finally calmed his nerves enough to talk in a normal tone of voice. "Y-you...you p-practice every d-d-day? In...in the open?" He dared to finally glance at Howl and his pupils went wide with surprise.

He was GORGEOUS. If Alexis didn't know better he would've mistaken Howl for a girl...and what a girl Howl would have made!

"Wait. Why am I thinking this?!"

Alexis turned beet red and realized that all the f** remarks, while offensive, seemed to make sense.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 06, 2009 3:15 pm

All of the screaming had managed to get some saliva spattered on his face. Howl sighed and wiped it away with a single gesture. So it would seem this school was filled with either improper young men who found delight in the harassment of others, or improper young men who were too timid to stand up for themselves. And though this boy did speak up, at the same time he was classified as the second grouping in Howl's mind.

To answer the boy's question, he said in a clear voice "I practice in my dorm each evening. Though I suppose my writing in a class like this could be considered extra practice." He never really considered it such, but one could technically consider any use of script to be practice for calligraphy.

He did notice the strange color that Alexis' face had turned and commented "Are you feeling okay, sir? Your face is all flushed." Without permission, the effeminate lad placed a hand on the boy's forehead as well as his own.

Of course, a couple boys in the hallway couldn't help but cough out rather loudly "FAGS!" Howl didn't even dignify their remark with a reaction of any sort.

"Oh god he noticed," Alexis thought in terror, cursing his inability to regulate his own blood flow. He kept telling himself that, eventually, he'd have gotten enough social interaction that he would stop doing these things: screaming, stuttering, blushing, falling over himself (which he hadn't done yet! Huzzah!). But each and every time he met someone knew his reactions were woefully predictable. "I-I'M F-FINE," he yelled (again) and tried to take a few steps back, but the loud remark from the other boys caused him to trip over his own feet and take a tumble into the lockers behind him. So much for avoiding the falling thing. "Owww," he groaned and shoved his glasses back up his nose after checking the back of his head for blood.

Alexis looked back at Howl, deeply ashamed. "S-sorry...I'm...I'm n-new...and n-not v-very good with...w-well...those types." Or any type of person really, but he wasn't going to say that. Howl on the other hand...he was so unfazed! They'd screamed out f** and he'd just stood there...like nothing had happened! And the fact he did calligraphy every day...and was so open about it! "He must be a god..." Alexis thought, completely dumbfounded by how Howl got around in the world.

"I'm...I'm Alexis," he finally introduced himself, holding out a hand, though he didn't (well, couldn't) make eye contact with him, "Alexis Brecht. A-and I have to ask..." the boy looked around the hallway and then whispered: "Y-you...you do calligraphy i-in front of y-your...roommate...?"
PostPosted: Tue Oct 06, 2009 3:55 pm

Withdrawing his hand as a few more spatters of spit managed to find their way to his face, Howl couldn't help but sigh slightly. This boy needed to learn about volume control. Using the hand that had been feeling Alexis' forehead for a temperature, he wiped away the saliva.

"I suppose you speak the truth, my friend. I could not feel a temperature..."

And that was when the boy backed up into the lockers. Shaking his head slightly, he stepped up to where the boy tumbled and stood there. He was concerned, but at the same time wanted to maintain his refined air. So instead of kneeling over like a worried mother and fawning over the dear, he simply asked "Are you okay?"

For some reason, this boy reminded him a lot of Simon from his P.E. class, with how flustered he seemed to get over the slightest things. Spines apparently did not grow on trees in this place. When the boy offered his hand for a shake, Howl gripped onto it firmly, but still light enough to be considered polite.

"Yes, I know, Alexis. I did pick up your paper." He offered a polite chuckle before continuing on. "My name is Howl Wickham, and like you, I am also new to this school. I do practice my calligraphy in front of my roommate, if he happens to be around when I practice. However, Franz is so busy doing different activities all over the school, I sometimes won't see him until just before lights out." He nodded his head and smiled at the boy.

"Y-yeah, I'm fine," he said quietly, sheepishly rubbing the back of his head as the pain sat in. "It uh...it happens quite a bit s-so I'm used to it." Alexis let out a sheepish laugh, though it got cut short as he realized what he'd admitted to. Interestingly enough, however, despite his feeble (and embarrassing) demeanor his own handshake was just as firm as Howl's. Somewhere, deep deep down inside of Alexis, there was a man.

"H-Howl Wickam...that's an interesting name. Though," Alexis looked around, paranoid for eavesdroppers, "what's even more interesting is that you...you're so...so open a-about...h-how," he adjusted his glasses nervously and finally made eye contact with Howl. "You don't hide it?" he finally came out with the question.
