The day was gray with gloom as a young mare was out hunting. Her head low to the ground, gold colored eyes watching the undergrowth for mice. She was hungry and she hadn't seen anything all day, or even the day before. The pale colored mare, who's wings fluttered a little at her shoulders sighed, this was getting no where. Raising her head back up, a rainbow socked foreleg stomped in frustration. There just had to be something around that she could eat, mice were all that she knew to hunt. Larger creatures didn't look easy to catch, and dead things were just gross.

"I know," She told her stomach as it growled quite loudly. "I will find us something to eat soon." She looked around again, feathered tail swaying some. "I hope." Though at this moment it seemed hopeless as her stomach growled once again.

Keela had been lying hidden in the shadows for a nap, and woke up at the sound of the approaching mare. However, she had no inclination to move just yet and stay still where she was, mostly hidden from sight. She had to chuckle however when the colorful mare addressed her loudly growling stomach. "I'm going to guess you don't eat grass and plants then, for there is plenty of the stuff around," she remarked with a light smirk as she stood up and shook herself off. "Having trouble with the hunt?" Generally others were scared off by her appearance when they first saw her, and it wouldn't surprise Keela in the least if this mare were to react the same way. After all, no other Kirin that she had come across yet had taloned front feet and a sharp beak. The wings and tail feathers were a bit unusual as well. Still, on occasion when the mood struck her she'd approach others just for the heck of it.

A voice spooked the young mare, true she had thought she had thought she were alone, but now she wasn't so sure. Head turning a little in the direction of the voice, a strange winged mare with a beak? Tilting her head somewhat to the side, she just stared, a strange sight indeed. But still, her mother had taught her one thing, that not everyone was going to look like the other. She was something of that meaning, well on the inside anyways. She looked normal on the outside, but inside she felt different, really different from her family.

"Grass doesn't settle with my stomach too well. I only eat that if my stomach is upset." Itzel admitted softly. "So you can say that I'm having hunting problems." She looked away a little, taking her gaze off the strange mare before her. She wasn't scared, Itzel was too hungry for that. "To tell the truth, I don't know how to hunt. Rest of my family are grass eaters, besides eating the occasional meat or something like that. I... I don't like grass in the least, fruit either." She felt ashamed of herself at this point, she was talking too much as it was...

Keela had to admit, she was somewhat impressed that the mare hadn't acted out in anyway. The staring was a bit irritating, but that was to be expected. "Not fruit?" she replied in mild surprise. True, she agreed whole-heartedly on green in general being foul stuff, but fruit she had always thought to be fairly decent. "Well, that's understandable I guess. Nothing beats the taste of meat- fresh or rotting. Not knowing how to hunt though could be a bit of a problem."

She looked the other mare over critically for a moment. She certainly didn't appear to be as well-equipped for killing as she was herself, but that horn could still easily pierce through any intended prey. "Hm, do those wings of yours work?" Keela asked curiously, still trying to imagine how the butterfly mare might go about hunting.

Itzel watched the strange mare look her over, it was true that she didn't much care for fruit, but maybe she would eat one now and again, but it was rare. Craning her head around as the beaked mare looked at her wings, this causing her to flutter them a little. They did work, but not too well, she was faster running then flying...

"They do work, but not that well." She surmised as the wings settled. "I'm faster running then I am flying." She looked away, "Which doesn't help me with hunting, the most I can catch is Mice and that's only about a quarter of the time I find one." Pitiful. "I suppose your wings help you hunt, huh?" Kind of out in the open, but it tickled her curious bone to wonder why her own wings were being questioned. "Like you hunt from up there?" Her head turned towards the branches over head, past them was the sky.

Itzel wasn't too thrilled about hunting from the air. Her wings let her flutter at atleast the tree tops, but higher then that was out of her reach. Shaking her head, dreds swinging in the motion before she stopped. Stepping away from the strange mare, Itzel half turned to look her over. She had noticed the beak and feathered wings, but she hadn't noticed that the forehooves were replaced with talons? Ok... That was just too strange, she had heard of such things happening, but never like this. Oh there was so much she had to learn...

"Sometimes I do," she replied, looking up briefly at the sky as well. "If I'm hunting avians anyway. That clearly wouldn't work for you though." Keela brought her attention back down to the mare before her. "Well then, I would say that your best bet for steady meals would be fishing, but those can be tough even for experienced hunters to catch sometimes. If you want something bigger than mice, I would go either with hares, foxes, or deer. All swift creatures, but they can't put up as much of a fight as some others. There's also reptiles and insects for more viable options."

As she rambled on about the variety of available meat choices, she felt a small rumble in her own stomach. Heh, guess it has been a few days, hasn't it, she thought to herself. Well, if I'm going to catch something for myself I may as well show this clueless one the ropes. "Would you like to look for some food with me? I could at least show you the basics."

Watching the raven colored mare some, Itzel wondered just how she hunted. She had watched Lions and things hunt, but didn't seem to have a knack for it. Though the thoughts of fishing didn't seem to be the best thing, Itzel had a thing for water and it wasn't a good thing. After the storm she and her sister had been caught in... Itzel had a strong hate for water. As other things were listed off, she hadn't really thought of anything else besides mice.

"Well I haven't really thought much about those things. Though my cousin fishes, I might see her about learning that skill... But I still don't know, fish do seem to have many small bones after all." She paused a moment to think about it all. When she was asked about going to look for food with the strange mare, Itzel just about jumped at the chance, but refrained. "Sure, I do need to learn, or I'm always going to be hungry."

(This is elf, I'm just too lazy to switch accounts atm.)

"The bones are not difficult to pick through if one is careful," Keela replied simply, already walking off into another part of the forest, simply expecting the other mare to follow. "In any case, the basis of hunting is to catch your prey off guard, so let us be silent for now. Try not to step on any twigs if it can be helped."

The two traveled in silence for quite some time, the raven mare able to walk oddly silently even with her strange bird-like front feet. As they neared another clearing however, she suddenly froze in place, eyes staring straight ahead. Hm, a doe. Normally, such flighty animals were not her first choice of prey, but this little excursion was mainly for the benefit of the mare behind her, whom she doubted would ever be hunting any of the fierce creatures she normally took on. Can't do an aerial attack, cause that wouldn't do her any good. Guess I'll have to go the old-fashioned way then. Looking back at her companion, Keela gave her a look that told her to both stay quiet and keep a close watch before she slowly and quietly began to stalk around to another part of the brush that was closer to the target.

Head lowering a little, her ears falling back, that seemed to be what someone else had said. She still wasn't too sure about the while thing with the bones. Shaking her head to clear those thoughts, she looked up as the raven colored mare started forward, more quietly then she could that was for sure, but Itzel did try her best not to step on every little twig and sprig. Stopping back behind the Keela and craned her neck around to see what they were after.

Itzel had opened her mouth and taken a breath to ask something, but the look she had given. It was the certain look that she often got from herself in the back of her mind. She hated it, but quite was something that she was good at, but in motion... That was another thing. Butterfly wings fluttering a little at her shoulders, the pale mare moved with the raven colored mare, though she stuck out more then ever. Bright coloring and things like that weren't the best for hiding.

I can do this. I can do this. Itzel repeated mentally to herself. I can hunt like anyone else. I can... Looking down she nearly stepped on a small twig that would have surely snapped, she stepped over it to only step on another with a hind hoof. Oh no... She looked up alarmed, hoping no one heard the small snap.

Sure enough, the doe had heard the twig snap clear as day and her muscles tensed in preparation to spring. Keela was faster though. With practiced agility, she leapt through the air at her prey and used her body weight to knock the deer over just as it had started to flee. (She would have normally latched onto it with her talons instead, but she kept in mind that whatever she did needed to be able to be copied by Itzel in the future.) The doe scrambled frantically to get up, but the mare kept pressed down against the ground with her weight as she swiftly rammed her horn down through the other's neck in order to kill it.

"And that is why twigs are a pain for predators," the raven mare said with a dark chuckle as she pulled back, watching the doe gurgle in vain for air. Out of pity for the creature she used her beak to severe it's spinal cord and end it's misery. "Takes a lot of practice at first, but it gets easier to do with time. Well, come get some while it's still warm." Keela was so used to hunting larger animals that it didn't even occur to her how horrific that scene might have actually appeared to others. For her it was simply the way things were.

ears falling back, she froze watching the raven mare leap out at the deer. Pale eyes wide as she saw, almost frame by frame, the horn gouging out the deer's throat before its neck being snapped. So that's how it's done? She thought to herself, almost too afraid to approach. Wings fluttering a little, she almost turned and bolted on the spot, but her stomach and the scent of blood and fresh meat called to her stomach.

"Yes, coming" She answered coming from the bushes and sniffed at the carcass. "That looked a lot easier then I could ever manage."

Looking up for a moment, she bent down to cut away the skin a little to get at the meat underneath. The body was still warm, the blood having only stopped for a few moments and hadn't settled. Tearing out mouthful after mouthful, she let the warm meat slip down her throat after a few chews. Blood streaking down her chin, her neck and a little splatter on her legs, it seemed that the pale mare was indeed hungry...

"You'll develop your own hunting style with time," Keela replied, watching with mild satisfaction as the butterfly mare feasted. The blood made a much starker contrast on her fur than it did on her own. Almost eerie really.

Her stomach growled softly, reminding her of her hunger. Since she had already pierced the prey's neck anyway, she decided to start her feat at the throat. The esophagus was a little chewy, but it was softer than some other organs still, and it had a decent flavor.

With the two of them eating together, it didn't take very long to polish off most of the deer, leaving naught but a mess of blood and carcass. "Interested in trying some brain?" the raven mare asked casually as she prepared to break open the skull. "It's tough to get to, but it's a good chunk of meat."

She had gorged far too much, at some point her stomach had said enough, but she kept eating. Now she felt like she were fat and possibly looked like she was going to have eggs like some other pregnant mare. Pulling her head away from the carcass, Itzel lapped at the blood that dripped from her muzzle. Pale eyes didn't seem as pale as they had once been, but the brightness faded back to their normal paleness.

"Brain?" Head tilting a little, she stepped over what was left of the deer and stood on the other side of the raven mare. "Why not? I've almost eaten a bit of everything else." Giving a bloodied grin, she looked down at the deer's head, peering at the glassed over eyes, again feeling a pang of guilt, but she was full again... Well maybe there was a little room left for a sample of brain... Though the thought made her want to lose what she had eaten...

Keela pecked lightly around the skull a bit, feeling for a weak point. Once she located one, she pulled he head back momentarily before ramming down with her horn. The action was successful in both piercing and cracking the skull open. "You have no idea how badly I damaged my horn the first couple of times I tried that," she said with a slight chuckle while she clawed the flesh away with her foot. "The very first time I tried it with my beak. Big mistake." With the skin now out of the way, the mare worked to pull apart the pieces of fracture skull so that they could get to the meat inside. "It's not very big, but that's probably a good thing. The rest was pretty filling anyway."

Itzel wiped her mouth off on the grass, though it did little more then smear the blood around even worse. She would have to wash her face off in a stream or something when she was done eating. Stepping over to be beside the raven mare once more, Itzel peered down as the skull was cracked open and pulled away. Taking note not to use her horn when cracking one open, well not so much that, but recklessly at least. Nodding she glanced at the spongy looking chunk of meat that Keela had called the brain. She wondered if she ate it, would she gain things that the deer knew? Memories? Things like that puzzled her, but she shook them off.

"So that's how you get to the brain huh? Simple enough I suppose." It wasn't like she hadn't 'eaten' brain before, just that mice didn't have a very 'big' brain to begin with...

Reaching down, she grasped a hold of the brain and tugged it free. With a slice of her horn, she cut what there was in half. A fair portion to both of them, though her stomach was going to make her regret all this. Itzel ate her half of the meat. It was a strange bit of meat, spongy at best, but slipped down nicely. NOW she was full. Over full actually, Itzel didn't know if she were going to be able to eat anything for at least a month or so. Giving an almost dream like expression she stepped backwards a couple paces and sat down.

"That was good, I don't think I can eat anything else for at least a month." She grinned, closing her eyes to shake away the sudden sleepiness that was over coming her.
