Karin Maaka is the middle child in a family of vampires who immigrated to Japan two centuries earlier. Unlike the rest of her family, Karin does not feed on blood, she produces it. As a result, she is forced to bite others to expel the extra blood, lest she suffer exaggerated nose-bleeds. She also exhibits no normal vampire traits, and instead lives her life just as an ordinary teenage girl would. She can go outside during the day, attends high school, and follows the sleep pattern of normal humans. However, the general peacefulness of her life is disrupted with the arrival of a new transfer student, Kenta Usui.
Any time she goes near him her blood increases. At first she tries to avoid him but they are in the same class and work in the same restaurant. Kenta begins to think that there is something fishy about Karin and eventually he learns her secret. Karin's elder brother Ren tries to erase his memory but Anju, Karin's younger sister, stops him from doing so. She convinces their parents Henry and Calera to make Kenta their ally, because he can help Karin during the daylight. Karin and Kenta become friends, and as they spend more time with on another, fall in love, though they are slow to admit their feelings to one another.
A new girl begins working in the same restaurant that Karin and Kenta work in who is later revealed to be a half-human/half-vampire hybrid. But after a while this new girl tells Karin that there are an increasing number of vampires showing up in the city and that is the reason her family is having trouble finding blood. However though the new girl said it would be good to inform her family, Karin remained silent to her family about the problem. After awhile the girl working with Karin and Kenta mysteriously disappeared. What will happen to the Maaka's now that all the vampires are taking there blood? Will any who has been acquainted with the Maaka's show up and help them run these other vampires out of the city?

Other things you might want to know
She's half human/half vampire, which means she can go out in the sunlight and such but only has to drink blood once a month. But also being half vampire also has it's down side especially when other vampires come after her. She lost her right eye in a fight with her parents when she was younger. She left her home after loosing her eye. ( She wears a white rose patch over it). She is often teased and bullied at school because of her appearance and other things so she tends to get stressed out.

Rose walked through the school. This was her least favorite part of the day, lunch. She hated the noisy obnoxious kids, the jock that always 'accidently' bumped into her chair, sitting alone as she listened to people whisper about her. Inwardly she hoped that would change this year but seriously doubted it. She had managed to skip a grade, she got eccelent grades despite her disliking of school. She sighed as she entered the caffeteria. "Another year of annoying idiots." she said as she headed to her usual spot and sat down.

Hotaru walked odwn the hallway towards the noisy cafeteria of the school. She had just transfered to that school and had done it so suddenly she hadn't gotten her uniform yet but the current outfit she had on seemed to fit her perfectly. The odd looking girl had stopped and attracted the attention of anyone she passes by. She had mainly come here for one reason and that was to seem more like a normal normal teenager while she stayed in the city to watch over the vampire activity. Hotaru pushed open the cafeteria doors and quickly skanned the cafeteria for an empty table as she continued to walk. She found and empty table in a corner that didn't have all that much light hitting it. Hotaru walked around tables and people who had stopped to stare at the odd girl and eventually made it to the table and sat down, not bothering to get anything to eat since she didn't enjoy human food at all. She looked around the cafeteria again looking at everyone her eye went over, since her other eye was hidden under the white rose eyepatch she wore.

Rose hissed under her breath as the jock bumped into her chair then an odd girl sitting at the table next to her. She wanted so badly to just turn around and bite him. Not in the middle of school, everyone will see, she thought to herself.

Hotaru looked at the guy that had bumped into a girl sitting at the table next to her chairs and didn't seem to want to apologize. Hotaru watched the guy for a moment as she propped her legs up on the chair next to her "Don't you want to apologize? It's rude to bump into a girls chair and not apologize" she spoke out to the guy. Once again it seemed that the people near by stopped what they were doing upon her slightly childish voice.

Hotaru stood up and grabebd the jock by the back of his shirt and lifted him off the ground a bit "I thought I told you to apologize." she said ignoring what the girl had said about leaving him be. "If you don't want to apologize willingly, I'll force you to apologize sincerely."
