"Okay, the other day in school, a girl (who is really mean to me) started talking about the song the "Shalom, my friend" song. Then she said she better not because it's a Jewish song so I might cry.

Firstly, I have no clue why I'd cry from her singing that song. I know I can get stressed when I hear her talking mean stuff about me and stressed enough to cry, but singing that song- why? So, I hate it when people assume that, especially when it's a silly reason. Anyway, that's not the question because the other annoying thing is this part of her sentence:

Quote:
because it's a Jewish song

I do not believe it's a Jewish song. It may have one Hebrew word in it but that does not make it Jewish. Some people seem to forget that the word Shalom does not come from the religion. Some people seem to forget that Israel is not only Jews. Some people seem to forget that Jewish is not a language as well as a faith.

Anyway, can someone please confirm to me, whether or not (and I think it's a "not") "Shalom, my friend" is a Jewish song.

Oh, and also, in case you're wondering, no, I did not say anything in reply to her saying that I might cry because I don't like to starting moaning at people like her, who then pretend they never said it.

I believe that it's a Jewish song. The first word is 'Shalom,' for Pete's sake! I don't understand why her singing a Jewish song would make you cry, but it is a Jewish song.

It might be a Jewish song. I don't know it. But just having Hebrew in it doesn't make it one.

Just because a word is Hebrew does not mean it's said by a Jew, or spoken in a Jewish sense. It's just a language. Just like not everyone who speaks English is from Britain, or everyone who speaks Japanese is from Japan. Not everyone who speaks Hebrew is Jewish.

Language does not equal religion.

"Sri, thank you. 3nodding My point exactly. The Hebrew word doesn't make necessarily a Jewish song.

And, Lumanny, it wouldn't make me cry, which is why that part annoyed me too.

I can't honestly say I've heard of the song before, so I don't know if I can really tell you. But I'm guessing it's just like how some J-pop songs throw in English words. Does that mean it's an English song? No, not really. So it may just be like that.
