my fiance and i are looking at houses so ill be moving out of my father's house sometime soon.
whats the best way to move with my fish? the furthest im willing to move is an hour away so lets go ahead and assume the worse and say im moving that far away, probably not but lets just assume for now. what would be the best way to transport my fish?
could i put each one in a tuppuware container?
should i bring all their old tank water so i dont have to wait weeks for my tank to recycle while my fish die?
should i not feed them the day before?

i cant leave them behind because my dad and sister know nothing of proper fish care.
i know my bettas could make the trip since most of them i got from stores that were far away. but im really worried about my new rams and my pleco. the guy at the stores said rams are delicate. i know i got them from a store an hour away but you could tell they werent feeling well at all during the trip home.
and im also worried about my pleco because well, its a pleco and is my favorite fish

Put them in bags or tupperware in a cooler. The cooler will keep the temps relatively stable and it'll be dark so they don't freak out too much. Keep a portion of your water, put like 1/3-1/2 of it in the cooler, or another cooler, or whatever. Keep your filter media wet and in the cooler because you don't want the bacteria getting too cold. Make sure to empty your tank when moving it so it doesn't crack. The filter media will make it so the tank doesn't have to recycle. If you want extra assurance, put your gravel or sand or whatever in another bag/tupperware with a little bit of water. The bacteria live on rough surfaces, not in the water.

Fish can survive a few days in a bag in the mail, so a few hours is nothing. I would make setting up the tank a first priority though. I bought new rams yesterday as well, the store was an hour away from my boyfriends house, and his house is 30 mins to 1 hr from mine, so I brought a cooler and put the bag in that. They survived the 2 hour trip, but they weren't looking too good in that bag and the water was gross. I suggest not feeding your fish for a day or two before the move.

thanks ^.^
how are your rams?
mine were quite happy to be in a tank again. they jumped out of the bag into the tank while i was opening the bag to let it float for a bit to get them used to the temps

Welcome! They're doing great. I dumped them in a bucket because the bag was too big to hold on my own and they pretty much swam right into my net without resistance to get them into the tank. They were definitely happy to be there. They also ate about half an hour later, so I take that as a good sign.

Glad to hear the fish made the trip in good health.

I'm going to have to remember this thread smile some very good advice, and I'm probably going to do some moving in a couple of years ^^.

i moved my fish twice within the last six months.. i'll certainly remember the cooler thing for next time!

i saved all the water in buckets and transported the fish in bags from the pet store.

what a hassle! but it's worth it :].

glad your move went well!
