Time had passed since the little wayward pup had been rescued from her plight; she had returned to the sea and her family, and had told them all of her adventures. Jaile had held on to great hope that she would see her friend again, sooner than later, and though she always hoped. . . . it had yet to happen.

As a pup she had tried to explore the forest, always yearning to catch some glimpse of the black and white coated male. Yes, she knew that he lived for night but there could always be a chance he was up late. The days turned in to weeks, and weeks in to months, and life moved on without a seconds hesitation. Her cries to the darkness in hopes of hearing a reply became less frequent with age. It wasn't that she didn't want to meet her hero, but it was foolish to hang on to to such hope. . .

Especially when the likelihood of meeting Sly grew less and less. Though she yearned for her friend, and his memory stayed near and dear to her heart, life did move on. The wolf grew up, losing the innocence of her puphood and becoming an active member in her small ocean-side pack. She traded clumsiness for grace and her excitable nature for something more relaxed and easy going; she was growing up, and though she did think of the black and white male from time to time, wondering where he might be and what he might be experiencing . . . she had come to accept the fact that the spirits desired to keep them apart.

Rekindling their friendship just wasn't meant to be. . . at least not any time soon, as far as the female were concerned. Jaile wasn't the sort to lose all hope. . . but it did occur to her that even if she did run in to him, there was a good chance he'd have long since forgotten about her. Who knew where his paws had taken him, where his travels had lead. . . .

Unfortunately for Jaile, though she yearned for travel, she had yet to walk away from her family. She felt obligated to stay, to help her mother and father in whatever way possible. Though she loved the ocean, she often travelled the woods and dreamed about disappearing on some sort of adventure. . . of being swept away and really getting to taste life. But something held her back, told her to wait. . . .

For what, Jaile could hardly compute. But with every passing day she grew more anxious to roam.

The late summer evening was no different. With the stars twinkling over head, the wolfess trotted out of the woods and in to a small clearing. The tall grasses were still soft, not quite ready to dry up and die though fall and autumn were already in the air. The evenings were cooler and a touch of colour was beginning to paint the trees of the woods. Jaile had taken a few days to travel away from her pack, to enjoy the last days of summer. Crickets sang out, and the sky was fast turning from rich purple and blue in to the black of night.

It was good to be alone. . . Good to let her thoughts wander, good to step away from her pack and simply be.

Sly had grown with the seasons, and once he was on the brink of adulthood his mother had taken his puppyhood pelt from him and told him to go out into the world to find another. It had been a long search, a chore he disliked, but one that he soon after came to love. It was often that he boasted of the tale finding the giant raccoon high in a tree and forcing the creature down to battle. Most would call him a liar, except that his mother had carefully skinned the giant raccoon and proudly set the skin back on her sons back. All the world would know of his prowess and ability, even those in the sea, or those in the sky were prey to her shadow son.

The pride had slowly worn away though until others could once again tolerate him. It was the tricky nature of his that never faded, he still enjoyed hiding in the dark only to pop out and startle the unsuspecting. Responsibility was like a foul curse word to him, why would he want to burden himself when the world was so pleasant as it was? Then sometimes in the bright noon he would stick his nose out of his den and remember her...Jaile his little damsel in distress. Though he hadn't been so large himself, but it was easy to remember her gentle words. She had called him her hero and her friend, and he hadn't made a friend since.

Often he traveled towards the ocean only to stop at the forests edge and peer out into the open stretches of sparse trees and sandy dunes, and the wide vast ocean beyond. The shadows were so few that he felt no desire to continue out. Somedays he would though, despite it all, for faintly on the wind he remembered her voice and longed to see her again. No doubt she had forgotten him, after all heros didn't live forever.

He wandered slowly as the sun set and smiled as the stars appeared, his bright green eyes scanned around him and he slipped into the bushes around a clearing. He heard the sound of another, a soft trot, probably a fox...he couldn't wait to leap out and terrify it. He waited until the sound stopped, for the fox to adjust itself and sit in peace, and then he leapt out with a fierce snapping of his teeth.

Lost within the comfort of her thoughts, enjoying the gentle summer breeze and serenade of night times song she hardly realized that another lurked within the nearby woods. Unfortunately for Jaile, though a rather confident she-wolf, she was occasionally a bit jumpy and easily startled.

Alas, she was easy prey for the shadow wolf.

All of a sudden, the calm of the evening disappeared as something quite large leapt out from the shadows. There was a snapping of teeth, a flash of white against the night and Jaile couldn't help but yelp in fear. Like a flash she jerked backwards, eyes wide with fright from the monster before her. Her tail was partially raised, her hackles raised and every tuft of fur standing straight up on her coat. Her own snarl, quite foreign to the lady, appeared as she bared her fangs. . . But despite her aggressive appearance, her ears were flattened against her head, proving the terror that she felt.

Step by step, she began a retreat, unsure what danger lurked before her. The male was large, much bigger than she, and quite unfamiliar. His coat was mostly black, with but a touch of white around his green eyes. Deep down, a part of the wolfess found something strangely familiar . . . .but her surprise and fear of the unknown were currently overwhelming any competent thought she might have had. The darkness of night didn't help and so focused on his face (in case he dare make move to attack) she didn't notice the pelt covering his shoulders.

All Sly was, at the moment, was a potential predator. . . And all Jaile wanted to do was make a hasty retreat.

Sly froze and stepped back, alright...this was strange, for starters it wasn't a fox at all. The delicate trotting sound had been a female, and not just any female. Sly stared openly now his head tilting as his green eyes flickered over each feature, the orange tipped ears, the eyes, the smooth black marks on her coat.

"Jaile?" His voice was wary now and he stepped forward wondering if it wasn't all just a dream. He had never dreamed of her grown though, he had known she must be as grown as he...but she was...breathtaking. A flash from his past, a pleasant surprise.

"Is that really...you?" His voice was wondering now even as his tail began to wag.

The snarl in her throat instantly froze and her eyes widened with surprise. Her flattened ears sprung up and pressed forward as recognition began to stir amongst her being. Who was it who knew her name. . .? Who was it who - - - -

Oh, by the spirits, it couldn't be! It absolutely, positively couldn't be! The white markings that donned his face were now made incredibly familiar; shadows of past took form in to a shape and being that had saved her so long ago. Rising fully from her defensive stance, the fur settling upon her back and her own wag swiftly wagging, Jaile's expression turned from one of curiosity in to a radiant smile.

It was him!

Now that she could give Sly a proper look, it was indeed the pup from her past though he had certainly grown! He was much larger than she would have imagined, and much more handsome too, but it was fitting for the wolf. Though a shadowed figure of night, he was still every bit as much the hero she remembered.

"SLY! Oh, oh is it really you!?" She breathed, excitement taking hold of her as she pounced forward, not at all afraid any longer. Laughter rang out, her delight quite apparent as she resisted pouncing him in a most puppish manner. No, she was a lady. . sort of. Growing in to one, at any rate. Besides, his own excitement might not match up to her own and she didn't want to smother her friend the very instant they were reunited!

((Sorry for the short post. >: I just woke up. . . brain isn't functioning properly atm. ))

Sly didn't care much for manners, a fact probably made most obvious by how he had leapt out to terrify her. He pounced forward now and flung his paws around her to bring them both into a tumbling hug. "Jaile! I never thought I would really see you again..." He nuzzled her happily.

What a reunion, and one that was quite a long time coming at that! "Your not still lost?" He asked with a soft chuckle amusement dancing in his bright green eyes. It was as if no time had passed at all, and they were once again simply friends as close as the day they had met.

The black mass of her friend pounced forward and tackled her in a hug! The joy at being reunited only intensified as they rolled to a stop, a tangle of fur and delight. Licking happily at his face, her tail still wagging crazily, any fear of a need to be 'proper' with him was completely displaced. No, it was true that it was as if no time had passed at all, despite their growth and maturity. "I . . . I'd go out looking, especially when I was younger. But as time passed and I saw no hide nor hair of you I lost hope. . . I longed to find you someday but the reality just didn't seem possible."

Reaching up, she pawed ever so lightly at his face as he teased her. "Surprisingly enough, I actually could find my way home out here. But I suppose I could always request some assistance, for old times sake," she giggled gently, tossing her green eyed companion a good natured wink.

Savoring the moment, Jaile couldn't keep the smile from her features. She was absolutely beaming up at her friend, and she didn't dare want to risk losing him to time once again. Now that they'd reunited and grown up. . .well. . . .with luck he wasn't just briefly passing through. "How have you been though? Well, I hope?" She yearned to know of his life, of his adventures, of what he'd been up to all this time. . .

Her life was ridiculously boring in comparison, she was sure. A quiet life wit hher family and not much else besides. . . Surely Sly had some grand tales to speak of! He had always seemed terribly mysterious in Jaile's puppish mind, and she had yet to lose such an idea.

"I'll escort you home! That way I can visit you more often..." He looked at her hopefully then smiled as she winked pawing at her muzzle. "You've barely changed at all." Except that she was even more beautiful then he remembered, she still looked like she needed protecting though. At least in his eyes, perhaps he would always see her that way, his damsel in distress.

"I've been alive and well..." He twisted slowly trying to show off the huge raccoon pelt that almost covered his back. He had long ago stopped boasting of the tale, but he hoped Jaile would ask him about it so he could, well not show off, he just wanted her to be impressed.

Jaile giggled and gave a fervent nod, quite happy to have an escort. For old times sake, it would do her heart good knowing that she might not have to go years without seeing her dear friend again. If he could trace her back to her pack lands, then there was a shot he might visit. . . or at least approach near enough that she'd know of his presence and could better seek him out! Ooooh, he mother and siblings would be so very pleased~! She had spoken fondly of her ebony protector and to finally be reunited was bliss.

"I would be most honored," she added, dipping her head in a most formal bow. Strange, the pair of them. With the mysterious pelted wolf and his antics next to the gentle lady Jaile and all her properness. She wasn't really a lady but she did like to do right and was a bit of a dreamer; while Sly was able to move throughout the world as he pleased, Jaile had yet to be free of her chains. She loved her pack, her family, but she didn't realize that there could be a life of something more. . . And while Sly preferred to be carefree and footloose, Jaile knew her responsibilities.

"Oh, I'm quite glad to hear," she cooed, eyes bright despite the shadows of night around them. "And it certainly shows!" She complimented, noting his thick fur and size. He was indeed quite healthy . . . "And you've a new pelt, I see!" Trotting closer, the wolfess walked around her friend, giving the giant pelt an appreciated look. "And where did you find this one. . .?" She questioned, giving the dead creature a little sniff before turning back to her friend. "It had to be one giant racoon to fit you. . ." Whether he found out, fought it, or had it gifted it mattered now. There was already a great admiration colouring her body language; she was quite proud of her friend, and his strength and heroics (be they only in her minds eye or not) would never waver.

He couldn't quite hold himself then, he tipped his muzzle in return his body relaxed at last, calm. It was strange the soothing effect she had on him, why run around like mad when he was so content right here in this time and place beside her. He moved to lead them both out of the clearing no longer concerned about the lack of shadows, this time she was right beside him and he would find the place she called home.

His chest puffed a bit with pride then and he grinned his green eyes sparkling. "Found him myself, he was hiding up in a tree a very tall tree!" He added and smirked his voice deeper now. "I tracked him though, and waited, and waited, and finally I started to shake the tree, I braced my paws on it and leapt and leapt. The beast was huge and he chattered at me with such anger, he threw leaves at me too! Finally he tried to jump to another tree, and missed! I was on him then, but I couldn't tear him up or the pelt would be ruined. He was large and his teeth were fierce but finally I pinned him on his back and got him by the belly..." He lifted his head and smiled his fangs flashing in a smile.

Jaile followed her friend, still floating on cloud nine. Here she was, reunited with the shadowed male finally at last. After all these years, after thinking him long gone and without a memory of her here he was. . . . Standing before her. . . .

And it was good. The femme couldn't be more content and all she wished was that the night slowed so she might be able to spend more time catching up with Sly. There was so much to learn about, so much about him she still didn't know. . . . Having been gifted only one evening with him so many years ago, it wouldn't be fair to let this time go by so swiftly.

Sly spoke of his tail and Jaile couldn't help but be impressed. She eyed the pelt that rested upon his broad shoulders and knew that it had to have been quite the battle. A raccoon that large was hardly imaginable and, as he stated, to kill it without destroying the pelt would be quite a feat. Her tail wagged, the wolfess allowing it to brush against his own as she grinned. "Well that is quite the story! To kill it so neatly and leave no marks upon it. . . . I'm just sorry I missed such a scene." Peeking up at her friend, she added lightly, "Quite the tracker and hunter you are, discovering such a creature." Her praise was genuine and she couldn't help but smile proudly up at her friend.

Yes, Jaile could hunt, but it wasn't her strongest suit. She was more of a nurturing sort, supportive to her mother and her siblings; she could track a rabbit or small game easy enough but anything her size or larger wasn't easy for the petite femme to bring down.

As the two walked out of the clearing and back in to the woods, Jaile did hesitate. She knew how to get home, exactly how long it would be but she refused to let this time slip by so swiftly. "Do you mind if we perhaps take a slight detour? I know of a lake, not far. . . I'm sorry," she apologized, dipping her head. "I just feel a bit parched from my stroll." It wasn't exactly a lie, a drink would do her good and give her reason to avoid returning to her pack lands so soon.

But at least she could show him the beach, give him view of the ocean. . . . It wasn't terribly far a journey, especially now that they were both adults and full grown.

Sly grinned at her praise and felt a swell of satisfaction, had he been this pleased with his mothers praise? No this was different, Jaile's opinion meant a lot to him she was his first friends, his best friend, his only friend. Family you were dealt, but friends you chose.

"What have you been up to though? Is your pack well? Were you alright...I...I spent so many nights hoping you were..." He finally murmured softly his green eyes sparkling with honesty.

He paused as she hesitated and looked at her curiously before grinning. "Of course I don't mind, a drink sounds nice." He smirked at the thought of splashing her with the water as well. Sometimes he just couldn't control his devious and sly stray thoughts, though they were never born of malice he often had trouble realizing when they might pose danger or harm.

The wolfess felt relief when the ebony one agreed to a drink. Just a few extra moments, in case they parted ways for just as long. Though she sincerely hoped she might see him before the seasons changed and years flew by, there was no guarantee this meeting was more than a one night affair. . . . . Best cherish the moment, right?

Leading him through the foliage, the wolfess felt a warmth enter her heart as he admitted he thought of her. Maybe it wasn't often or frequently (thoug he did claim many a night) but it was better than being lost to his memory. She was glad she meant a little to the dark, pelted stranger for he truly was the world to Jaile. Being in a small pack with few members, she didn't know many outside of her family and cousins. Sly had been her savior, her hero, and her friend . . . . and even if it had only been one night, it was a night she never would forget.

"I'm afraid I haven't been up to much. Our pack hasn't changed since we were pups, and I . . . I live a pretty simple life." Her ears flattened some as her gaze clouded, distancing herself as she thought about her life. "I'm afraid I'm not nearly as bold or adventurous as you. . . Life's routine, you know? I help take care of my family, my siblings and cousins but. . . ." She shook her head and forced a smile, eyes lighting as she remember WHO she was with. "It's not bad. Just . . . plain." Boring, in other words. But Jaile didn't have a reason or the heart to leave. . . .

The world was too big for a simple wolfess like she. She wasn't afraid, but she did play on the side of caution. Maybe a little too much. "I'm quite sure you've done enough adventuring for us both; perhaps you can tell me more stories sometime." Her eyes brightened and she nudged his shoulder playfully with her nose as she passed, taking the lead to maneuver them to a small pond. She trotted delicately through the underbrush, small compared to the pelted Sly but proud of her natural grace.

It wasn't much but it was something. . . . She was no radiant beauty queen, she wasn't exotic like Kaia or harbor the swirled coat of her cousin. . . But at least she was agile when need be, and light on her paws. It was her one vanity, if the young wolfess could ever be considered vain.

((Feel free to get them to a pond/pool/whatever if you wish. Otherwise I'll bring them to it in my next post. <3 ))

Sly smiled as they found a slow moving stream and leaped over it and back before laying down beside Jaile with a slight grin. He couldn't help his enthusiasm especially with her finally near again.

"Of course I'll tell you more, I have to keep having adventures to tell you though, I'll come visit you more now that I've found you again." He promised happily before dipping his muzzle into the water and lapping it up.

She didn't sound plain to him, she sounded caring, her family was so like and yet so different from his own. Own dwelling in the light and the other in the darkness, he wondered if her mother had any special talents, or if her father did? He had spent his puphood playing with shadows and rolling around the piles of furs his mother had lined their den with. Did she feel close to her siblings the way he felt close to his own? Now that they were grown he ached at the knowledge that they were slowly drifting apart.

Trying to pull himself from somber thoughts he sprang to his paws and grinned splashing his leg into the water before bringing it up as quickly to splash Jaile with a chuckle.

The young wolf padded up to the waters edge, content with her friend. It was so nice to see him alive and well! He'd grown in to quite the handsome wolf and certainly looked quite the intimidating sight, especially with the pelt lining his shoulders! Jaile certainly wouldn't want to cross him while angry. . . though she wasn't one to desire confrontation period.

"Oh, I do hope you will," she spoke, words sounding much more wistful than she'd intended to let on. "You were missed and I'd hate to lose sight of you for years on end. . . " Who knew what might happen in such a span of time? There were still dangers out there, from two-legged things to wolves with evil hearts and souls. Though she was confident her friend could get out of any jam he might find himself within there was no guarantee of his safety. Or that trouble wouldn't find him!

But best not to think of such things. Lowering her head, the brown and orange tipped wolfess drank. So intent was she she flicked an ear his way when he sprang to his paws, but jerked back at the splash. Unfortunately for her, she wasn't fast enough and got a face full of water! "Hey!" She protested, though a smile was quick to line her features as she retreated a step from her friend and shook the water from her eyes and nose.

"You've asked for it now!" She warned, leaping at him and giving a playful snap of her jaws. Like she was some sort of threat. . . really. . . . It was laughable! Regardless, she'd take on her friend. . . if he wanted splashes, she could certainly oblige!
