WORLD TRAVELER EXTRAORDINAIRE

User Image

[Click for full, non-shooped image.]

Given Name: Riordan
Family Name: McBride (Aubrien)
Nicknames/Titles: Rio, Danny, House Aubrien's Second Son, "Professor"
Origin: Human

Eye Color: Bright blue
Hair Color: Bright blond
Skintone: Originally fair, now somewhat tanned from exposure to the outdoors.
Height: 5'9"
Build: Athletic, and a little lanky.
Apparent Age: 21

Personality: Riordan is friendly, egalitarian, and open-minded, the exact opposite of his tradition-bound family, and he's very happy to stay that way thank-you-very-much. Having spent the first part of his life with private tutors and the rest scouring the globe for new knowledge, he's cosmopolitan and well-educated, able to converse on almost anything at all, but he can be a little absent-minded and tends to forget social graces when wrapped up in the task at hand. Completely comfortable with spending months in a tent stalking a rare beast across a desert, Riordan is equally at home holed up in some dank ruins, waiting for the locals hemming him in to get bored and go away.

Somewhat quirky in his mannerisms even at the best of times, Riordan maintains the extremely polite manner and language drilled into him as a boy; he can seem like the quintessential absent-minded professor, albeit a little younger than most. Despite that, Riordan takes his duties seriously (self-appointed or otherwise) and would return home if he felt they really needed him... which, of course, they don't.

Likes: Incredibly spicy foods, Exploring new lands, re-visiting old lands that were once new, Examining strange creatures, Meeting new people and asking (too) many questions, Autumn weather with clear skies, people listening when he starts going on and on about something interesting, Leather couches (preferably black), Taking care of his impromptu family
Dislikes: Bland foods, Staying for long in small-to-medium rooms, Cold wet weather, Rattan furniture, People who stare at him, His parents' trying to make him go home and get married to a nice girl with huge dowries, When someone he cares about is upset and he can't seem to help them
Hobbies: Finding unusual things and carefully cataloguing them in his growing Codex Ex Miscellanea; Sketching then painting the illustrations; Climbing trees (cliffs, ect)
Fears: His own mortality (he tries not to think about it); Being forced to accept a mundane life (this keeps him up at night); The way it hurts when you care about other people (what if something happens to them?)
Talents: Surprisingly good artist; excellent conversationalist; a harmonica maestro; flips a mean flapjack; has a talent for taming wild animals.

Parent/s: Alastair and Caroline Aubrien, once of Durem, now of the Isle de Gambino; dealers in rare items.
Siblings: Elder Brother Corbenik Aubrien, currently in the process of becoming the head of Aubrien Speciality Trading Co.
Adopted Children: Liliandria, Suigintou, Shinku
Pets: See "Little Friends," below.

Sexual Preference: Unknown ("Who has time for that? ADVENTURE awaits!")
Relationship Status: Single
Significant Other: N/A
Rival/Archenemy: N/A
Nemesis: N/A

Background: Twenty-one years ago, Riordan was born into a well-to-do family of merchants, traders, and rare item hunters. Having made their fortune in the Marketplace several generations ago, capitalizing on an early start and several wise business decisions, the Aubrien line had long decided to retire to a life of leisure, relaxation, and respectability on the Isle de Gambino.

Riordan, from the age of seven, had no intention of settling down. Raised by tutors on numbers, dry facts, and Gaian history presented in the most staid manner possibly, Riordan was a clever, sunny child who spent most of his time staring out of windows and sunken deep in daydreams. He loved his parents, and his elder brother, but he had no intention of growing up like them: Responsible and boring, only leaving their mansion to make the short commute to the beach or the Bank or the shops, or possibly the family shore-side bungalow. He wanted a life of adventure, seeking strange creatures and meeting strange people, and from the time he was twelve Riordan did his best to wheedle his parents into making him a free agent, not Young Lord Of The Manor.

No dice.

So, at age seventeen, during a family trip to the shore, Riordan snagged a tour bus heading south, and from there took the train into Barton. Signing on with an Akean exploratory force under his mother's maiden name, Rio found his place amongst animals of all shapes and artifacts that often held minds of their own. Since then he has bid farewell to the Akeans and struck out on his own, constantly moving in order to avoid his parents' detection. It would be an embarrassing fiasco if Alastair and Caroline Aubrien were to drag their wayward son home by force, so for now they must tolerate Riordan's restlessness and take solace in the more dependable Corbenik, their oldest son.

Current Goals: Learn more things! Unearth new artifacts! Encounter strange beasts! And continue to avoid the retrieval-squads that his parents, every so often, send out after him. So, the usual for Riordan.

ENVIRONMENTAL TRAVELOGUE

Home

Welcome to Riordan's (temporary) home; if you're visiting, you've probably met him somewhere on his travels? He isn't in at the moment, and he's rarely in residence to tell the truth, but you're welcome to look around and see if anything's of interest. If you'd like to contact Riordan, or anyone in his care, please do leave a message with this parchment and pen. If this has something to do with contracting an expedition, it's too bad, but Riordan has temporarily suspended such contracts; he expects someone new to his little family, and for the time being he's staying put.

Well, he's mostly staying somewhere in town, anyway.

The residence itself consists of three rooms on the upper floor of a two-story inn, The Widow Jameson, which is run by a kindly old couple who lives downstairs. Currently the other rooms are empty and Riordan has the floor to himself, but he keeps all of his many "specimens" and souvenirs in his rooms - One is his bedroom, one is a storage-room, and the 'work' room if where you'll often find him at his desk, which overlooks the tidy village streets. Oddly-shaped parcels are stacked up everywhere, some of them dented and roughed up as though through travel, some ripped at the corners and spilling what look like sawdust or strange feathers or shimmering scales. Also in residence are a number of cages, boxes, compartments, and other items for keeping creatures in, although most at the moment are empty.

In addition, Riordan's small entourage has set up shop in two or three of the rooms, with one being prepared for his expected little guest.

History

Until recently, Riordan and his 'menagerie,' along with those under his care, were traveling in the far south of the world, beyond the edges of most modern maps. While traveling, Riordan generally utilizes a number of sturdy wagons and carts, forming a small wagon-train which usually doubles in size; due to his general unease with violence, Riordan has spent most of his ventures joining with other merchants, explorers, or others with business in the farther reaches of Gaia.

However, having collected his quota of information, Riordan has now retired to a small town similar to a slightly-steampunk/Victorian-ish settlement, north of Durem. Here he has settled in The Widow Johnson Inn, run by a kindly elder couple of Mr. and Mrs. Tremaine. During this season, very few tourists come to the township of Three Fords, so as a result Riordan has rented the entire top floor of the three-story inn; six rooms in all.

With his wagons stored safely in the local stables, Riordan has moved his inventory to the inn itself. Some of his less-hardy creature friends are inhabiting two rooms; two more rooms store supplies and gear, such as camping equipment and stores of food. One of the remaining rooms is Riordan's bedroom and study, where he spends most of his time transcribing his notes and mental observations into thick, leather-bound parchment tomes, and the last room is being prepared for someone new...

FRIENDS AND ALLIES

Albedo
Human/Mystic Cyborg
White-haired, violet-eyed, and rarely in one place for long, Albedo mirrors Rio's tendency to pack up and leave at the drop of a hat. The difference being, of course, that Riordan sets out to gain knowledge; Albedo, as a demon-hunter, puts what she knows to the test. Things are always slow during the summer months, so right now Albedo is relaxing while she can and gearing up for the coming dimming of bright summer light.

Delan
Human
Delan spends most of his time hanging around on the beaches of Gambino Island, surfing and sunning and mackin' on the ladies. To, admittedly, about a 50/50 chance of success, but he rarely seems discouraged anyway. His attention wavers, and as to what he does when he's not at the beach... Well, no-one's really sure what he does for a living, or where the money goes.

Lafayel
Primeval Pae'il
A highly-evolved example of his race, Lafayel is considered 'outcast' by his kind, having been lost early to that floating continent and adopted by a mysterious man. It seems that Lafayel has since been separated from his guardian, and now the Pae'il - clearly marked by his different upbringing, and unable to rejoin his fellows - wanders the face Gaia in search of that man. As Riordan has also seen much of the world, the quiet Pae'il considered him a great resource.

Yukio Tsuchiya
Human
Mysterious, dashing, and from a family of equal importance to the Aubrien line, Yukio is also the life-long rival of Corbenik, Riordan's older brother. Because of this, it's a little odd that Yukio gets along well with Riordan... But on the other hand, it's all the better to keep Riordan informed of what his family might try to get him back. They also share an interest in swordsmanship, so Rio has a chance to practice whenever Yukio passes by.

Leon & Luka
Human
New arrivals on the scene, these two brothers - twins, apparently - are less friends, or even acquaintances, than they are business partners. However, both the brothers and Riordan have profited from their partnership, as Luka and Leon handle the fighting while Riordan tracks down worthwhile finds. Leon is the taciturn type, and Luka is the sunny sociopath of the pair; both are expert marksman and carry laser rifles, and often disappear for up to months at a time with no explanation.

LITTLE FRIENDS

Chai
Tsuri
Riordan doesn't actually know where Chai came from; the Tsuri appeared amidst the rocks not far from Akea, and Riordan formed a bond with the Tsuri that meant he could not leave Chai behind. Seeming to possess great wisdom despite lacking the ability to speak, Chai has strong instincts which has saved both himself and Riordan on more than one occasion.

Arizona Sunset
Alicorn
Arizona Sunset was originally owned by a friend of Riordan's, a woman who went by the name of Hoshi; however, that friend went on a journey not long ago, somewhere where she could not bring her steed and friend. Arizona Sunset was entrusted to Riordan, who has cared for the sensitive, temperamental alicorn ever since.

Kai-Ten
Zondou
Kai-Ten is a rarity, for while his people sport amongst the balmy waters of the southern seas, Kai-Ten was nearly mauled to death by a shark. Riordan, among the first few humans on the islands, blamed his party for attracting the shark with their meal remnants, and was able to salvage Kai-ten's lower body; as a result the Zondou feels as though he owes the human his life. Therefore, the somewhat sarcastic (though non-English-speaking) Zondou travels with Kai-Ten. Of note: While most Zondou have Water abilities, Kai-Ten has fire-related abilities.

Eissien
Eissien
This sentient cloud is, as far as Riordan knows, the last of his kind. The Eissien, as it is recorded in Riordan's notes, was found in an isolated valley carved into the northern mountains known as the Icespike Range. Easily blown apart by strong winds, Eissien prefers to stay indoors if at all possible, unless the winds outdoors are relatively still. Damp, like directed mists, Eissien can leave wet marks against anything it brushes against.

Vella Rosa
Winged Serpent
Vella Rosa comes from the hot, humid jungles somewhere in the south, where she and her kind lived amongst the the leaves. Vella Rose was born a mutant of the winged serpents, her bright pink making her a target; when Riordan found her, the serpent was nearly dead after an attack that would have ended with her being devoured. Riordan nursed her back to health, and Vella Rose decided to go with him: The rest of the world couldn't be any worse than Vella.

Patrick
Winged Cat
Patrick was never so much 'found' by Riordan; while Rio was camping on the islets in the cold northern sea, this odd-looking cat sauntered into Riordan's tent and settled himself atop the radiator. Patrick has been with the impromptu caravan ever since, watching with unblinking eyes and always managing to find the warmest place to sleep.

CACHE OF PRECIOUS THINGS

User Image

This chain-whip is Riordan's primary method of attack and defense; he's come to use it as adeptly as any whip-wielding explorer, and his accuracy with it is so strong that he can put out a cigarette held between someone's lips without brushing their skin. Although it finds its primary use in defending against wild creatures who might not want to be calmed, Riordan is also fully capable of using it effectively against humans as well.

User Image

This incense-burner was given to Riordan as a gift after he visited a colleague in the far east of Gaia; said colleague happened to be the offspring of a dragon, and Riordan spent eight months sifting through ancient maps and scrawled entries to find a long-last clutch of eggs. Although Riordan wouldn't accept gold, his friend and contact pressed this burner on him. Its scented oil never runs out or goes bad, and the fresh, clean scent seems to help Riordan write.

User Image

This lamp belongs to Suigintou, another one of Riordan's children; the hovering light goes out, although in daylight it fades until it disappears altogether.

User Image

Similar to the lamp above, this lamp works in much the same way and truly differs only in the coloring. This lamp belongs to Shinku, the other 'adopted daughter' of Riordan.

User Image

When not chasing exotic creatures or excavating rare items, Riordan calms his mind through careful tending of bonsai trees. The above is an example of such, a miniature peach-tree which is one of Riordan's favorites, and Vella Rose can usually be found curled around it.

THE FIRST ADVENTURE

If you had asked Riordan McBride, sometimes Riordan Aubrien, if he'd ever be hollering for a wayward child as his wits-end nurses used to call for him... Well, Riordan would have thought that you were mental. Yet here he was, and he repeated his words several times (with a few variations) until a shifting of the taller grasses drew his attention.

"A-hem!"

Riordan cleared his throat meaningfully, and from the grasses emerged a sheepish-looking Bengal tiger, and astride his back was a tiny girl with striking violet hair. She was obviously trying to swallow a giggle, but her bright-gold eyes were dancing with amusement at putting one over on her guardian.

"Lili." Riordan said only that, and raised his eyebrow, and the young child's mood immediately dimmed; she wasn't bad-tempered, only high-spirited, and the remembrance of that softened Riordan's temper until he was relenting despite herself.

"Oh, well... Come here, Little Bright."

Liliandria brightened instantly, as though someone had flipped a switch, and hopped easily off of the tiger's back; the large cat settled down in the tall grass as if for a nap, and Riordan dismounted himself. For her part, the unicorn eyed the tiger with distrust before moving away to graze, and Lili - exuberant as always - grasped Riordan's leg with both small arms.

"I hid so well, right?" she asked, and Riordan couldn't help but laugh as he plucked a blade of grass from her hair.

"Very well, Lili, but I've told you before, right? You can't go wandering off alone like that-- It isn't safe."

Liliandria looked up, eyes bewildered. "But I took Rajah," she said, nodding matter-of-factly at the snoozing tiger. Riordan sighed, then tried another tack that might work a little better.

"Still, it's not very fair of you to go off on adventures without me, right?" And at this, which seemed to be a new thought, Liliandria actually paused to consider. "We could've come out together, and brought Patrick and Rosa and everyone."

"Wellllll... I guess you're right," conceded Lili, digging the toe of her shoe into the soft earth beneath them. "But you're almost always out now. So..."

And Riordan realized that yes, it was actually true. He loved Liliandria, no doubt about it: But crazy as it might seem, he actually did have other responsibilities these days. And while he did try to make sure she always had something fun to do... Well, if the rate at which people were complaining about her was any indication...

'I'm sorry, but she pulled some feathers out of Mili's wings, and--'

'I took 'er to Logan's an' she set all the fish free! I was only tradin' f'r a few secs!'

'I'm... I can't believe I'm banned from the Guild...'

And Rio, of course, had staunchly defended his little Wish, because, of course, Lili was just a little girl. Adventurous, and she still didn't realize that, well, sometimes you had to restrain yourself. She was just a child, after all.

Thoughtfully, Rio almost unconsciously bent over to hold Liliandria's hand... Partially because she was very affectionate, and Riordan figured that if she was anything like other children he might want to get the affection in before she grew up. And also it was to keep Lili from wandering off, as she was prone to do, while her guardian seized up a possible solution. It would keep Liliandria busy, give her something new to do, and possibly stop isolating Rio from the hapless friends he asked to baby-sit.

"Hey, Lili? Have you ever thought about going to camp?"

"Um... Dunno." Rocking back and forth on her heels, Liliandria looked up at her guardian, sunshine eyes interested.

"Is it fun... ?"

As it turned out, Lili was excited about the idea, once Riordan had explained it to her. In all honestly, Rio might have even felt a little disappointed: Most children Lily's age probably wouldn't have wanted to be left alone so early. 'They grow up so fast,' mused Riordan wistfully, or at least he planned on doing that as soon as he was able to catch a break. Right now, he and Liliandria were a little too busy for that kind of monologue.

They tried the standard locales first, but Lili had gotten bored almost immediately: She'd already played kickball and gone swimming before. The arts and crafts tent held her attention, despite her macrame wallet looking like it wouldn't hold much more than a sieve... But by then the camp director was already giving Riordan pamphlets for different camps, and Riordan ushered out a glue-sticky Lili with an appropriately defensive air.

Then... Ah, then. What followed was a whirlwind of camps, centers, and specialty sign-ups; they must have covered everything from Art to Zen Meditation, which Liliandria immediately lost interest in when she found out they wouldn't actually teach her to levitate or learn martial arts. Then they tried a martial arts camp, which worked out for a while - at least Lili couldn't get seriously hurt, or lost - until Liliandria again discovered that Hong Kong action movies had lied to her.

Soccer, baseball, swimming, and gymnastics were all out; Lili didn't yet understand the point of practicing things she wasn't particularly interested in. Anything that involved sitting still for extended periods of time were out as well. And, while Lili enjoyed 4H camp, Riordan himself was doubtful about the idea of putting her with easily-disturbed barnyard animals for the better part of the day.

At last, beside himself, Riordan sought help from a friend, who cheerfully recommended Camp Fireside. Riordan, puzzled, had scanned the brochure and looked up with a skeptical eye.

"Oh, don't worry," said Albedo, grinning. "It's not in the brochure, but I think she'll like it."

Well, it was worth a shot. And Riordan finally understood why Albedo had recommended it, when the counselor - almost offhandedly - remarked "Oh, and while you may have heard that we have ghosts wandering around here, don't worry. They're all pretty tame."

Lili's eyes lit up like twin stars, and Riordan smiled... although privately, he was a little concerned. After all, real ghosts... ?

Three days later, Riordan startled his other charges by laughing out loud at Lili's letter home, which was a serious list of her ghost-hunting activities, wound up with:

"... n plse send the bottles you catch srits wth; i want 2 bring em home 2 show u."
