It had been so long since his childhood. It was odd that as a deep crimson male aquatic Katorai uncurled from his rocken bed, that he thought of his childhood. He knew he had a friend but he could barely remember what that friend looked like and he had long since forgotten the gender of his friend. He knew that Bingly should know but the Katorai did not have the heart to ask his best friend and former protector.
But this morning Bennet found his mind slipping into the past. He sighed and moved out into the open water his long ears flicking as his golden eyes scanned the caves and small rock holes for this friend. "Where could that fat little guy hide?" asked the toned and thin Katorai male. He ran a hand over his hips as he felt someone coming closer. He waited until the last minute and turn catching the plump little octopus of matching color as Bingly tried a sneak attack. "OH no you don't my friend...I know when your getting close!" he laughed and gave the bulbous part of the octopus's head a friendly kiss as the tentacles started to wrap around his wrist in a return of affection.

It had been a long time since Higoi had been back to this area - such a long time, in fact, that she didn't even remember it. Since that storm had washed her away from her home when she had been so young, she had been searching for it, for the friends that she had been stolen away from ... but now she had been gone so long that she had grown all the way to an adult. She couldn't remember what her friends looked like, or their names, but she remembered that they were dear to her heart, and so, once the storm had abated and she had recovered her strength, she had set off in search of them.
She hadn't any idea what direction to go in, and she had been so young at the time and wouldn't have even known how to tell the directions, even if she had known which direction to take, and so she had wandered the land and the sea, rivers, ponds, hills and forests, searching for the friends that she missed so much.
A life alone had taught her much. But it had also made her unused to the sound of voices ... and so, when one day she was swimming along and heard voices, she didn't know what to make of them, and she swam into some seaweed at the bottom of the river and hid, waiting to see who would appear, and what would happen.

Bennet laughed and moved his hand down allowing the now much smaller octopus cling to his wrist. He still remembered when he was almost smaller than hid deep red friend. He laughed slightly at the thought of having worried if he would ever grow bigger than the great octopus.
The two mostly aquatic Katorai hardly ever ventured out of the water and currently they were living within a bay at the mouth of a large semi salt river. Bingly often stayed in the more salt waters even when Bennet would venture up the river a bit to try and find something new to play with. "You are such a punk now a days my friend." he said softly. His voice was warm and soothing with a slight burble to his words. He still had a childish tone to his words and though he had not seen much of life he seemed to great it with the energy and curiosity of a child. "Okay you sit and look in these rock tunnels and I will go up river....maybe I can get us something special to eat today." he said and placed the octopus near a large half buried hole before started to swim towards the river.

Higoi swallowed nervously as she heard someone approaching and pressed herself closer to the bottom of the riverbed. In all her time gone, she had never seen another living soul, so when the dark katorai appeared in the water above her, she didn't know how to react. On the one hand, there was something about him that seemed ... familiar somehow, though she couldn't say how or why. But on the other hand, she didn't recognize him at all. She had always been shy, but after so much time alone, she was discovering that she was actually afraid of the presence of others ... despite the fact that she was searching so desperately for her friends.
That was what clinched it in her mind, the fact that this katorai couldn't be the one that she was looking for. He was alone ... and just about the only thing she could remember about her old friend was that he had never been alone. There had been someone else who had never, ever, left his side.
That decided it. She would wait down on the bottom of the river until he was gone, and then she would continue on her search.

Bennet swam past the hiding bright female. It was amazing that he did not see her bright white and red body. But clearly not all of the brain cells were firing within this adult Katorai. He just swam past her without a second look.
But the female was not completely unobserved. From the rock he was placed on Bingly was able to see something bright move down closer to the river bottom. Man if Bennet was so daft as to not see the white and red thing, it what other fun things had the simple minded Katorai missed?
After his friend moved off Bingly moved towards the bright moving object.

Higoi didn't see the octopus coming towards her. She was trying to keep in the plants that lined the bottom of the river so that she could continue to search for her long lost friend without having to talk to someone she didn't know. Her focus was in front of her, not what was coming around her.

Bingly memory was very good. And it helped that he had not seen another in these waters that had the familar red and white pattern. He gave his best attempt at a smile and nodded. This adult was the small child he helped look after so long ago. He moved closer and then gently placed a tentacle on her hand. It was the only thing he thought he could do without scarring her. After all he could not talk to her....should would not be able to hear the small bits of noise he could make nor understand him.

Higoi had no idea Bingly was coming towards her, so when he placed a tentacle on her hand she squealed loudly and jerked her hand away, her eyes filled with fear as she swam backwards away from him. "Who - who are you?" she asked fearfully.
But then she got a better look at him. Alone, the katorai had not jogged her memory ... but this little fellow ... something about him seemed ... familiar ...

Bingly raised up his two front tentacles in a 'calm down I wont hurt you manner'. He tired to make his eyes smile or his actions less 'frightening'. Though he was not fully sure. He slowly tilted his head wondering how to let her know that he was familiar with her.
Then the idea hit him. He motioned for her to wait then the octopus moved over to grab some weeds and started to work them together into a bed and then curled up on it and made the motions of holding two imaginary people with him. Maybe she would catch on maybe not but at least he was trying.

Higoi watched the strange little creature as he wove a bed out of the weeds, and suddenly she saw a flashback in her mind. She had once slept on a bed made of weeds ... She closed her eyes to remember. And there had been ... a little burgundy fellow there, too ... had he had this many arms? She ... couldn't ... quite remember ...
She opened her eyes and kept watching the little octopus, waiting to see if any other memories would be unlocked.

Bingly watched as the adult female shut her eyes. She had not grown up as strong as he thought she would have. But then again she had been a shy little guppy like child. He blew bubbles in a sigh and when she reopened her eyes he sat there looking up at her. He had no idea how else to jog her mind. They had not had that much time to get to know each other or do anything. He could not even remember what games they had played. She had been torn from the group within a few days from her joining him and Bennet.

Higoi kept watching the little octopus, her eyes thoughtful. She was beginning to remember now, bits and pieces ... but the other katorai, then, was that the one she had just seen? She turned around and floated up a few feet so that she could see him again. She still didn't recognize him, not really, but she watched him as he swam, trying to remember - remember if it was him, and if so, what his name was ...

Bingly watched her swim up and look back at Bennet. He swam up and hovered by her shoulder looking in the direction as well. He then snaked his tentacle around her shoulder and pulled her forward a bit in a lets follow manner to get her to go after his swimming friend. He knew it had to be the little one he had taken care of. She had the same look and seemed to remember...if not he might be in trouble. With out his body guard Bennet Bingly might not stand a chance of not becoming the koi's new meal.

Higoi was a little startled to feel the tentacle slipping around her shoulder, and she gasped slightly in surprise; but then she felt something different ... a strange sense of familiarity ... She blinked back tears. These had to be her missing friends, they had to be!
She swam forward slowly, towards the katorai that was swimming in the opposite direction, following after him - perhaps not as quickly as she could have, but she was very, very nervous.
