She couldn’t really hear much at first, the distinct cracking of the egg shell still reverberated about her small skull. With ears laid back and coat still sticky, Oceana didn’t move from where she dropped from her enclosure. Eyes closed tightly, the smells of her new world came to her first. It was a salty smell, with the mix of water? Bizarre, could there be such a thing? Other things touched the young filly’s nose, the sweet scent of flowers that she had heard her mother talking about even before her hatching. Oceana took a few breaths inhaling the smells even more, letting them give her the courage to open her ears and listen.

Slowly and quite stiffly, her ears slipped away from his slick coat and twitched upright, already the sounds of the ocean filled them. Or what she thought was running water, splashing against something nearby. An ear twitching slightly and pitched off to one side, as the twitter of a small bird caught its attention. That was something she didn’t hear before, it was always to roar of water and her mother’s sweet voice. Prompting herself to raise her lids, Oceana’s eyes popped open, everything was blurry at best before her vision started to clear. Everything looked strange to her, so large and so intimidating. Ears flattening themselves back again, she tried to curl up in a tight little ball as the shadows shifted. An autumn breeze ruffled the branches over head.

The branches as they rustled, bare limbs shaking, scratched across each other. Some almost seemed to be reaching out, like they wanted to snatch up the small blue spotted filly. Eyes shifting around, Oceana looked for something familiar, something that sounded reassuring. The salty breeze was warm against her back, as she stumbled to try and stand, minding not to crush anything by accident. As she stood, a swarm of butterflies rose from the ground around her in an array of colors. Head spinning a bit she plopped back onto her rump. Eyes widening, she watched as the butterflies spiraled, twisting and turning until they settled down again around her. Wow, that was just it, wow. Trying again, but more carefully, Oceana finally managed to get to her hooves, though her knees knocked together under her own weight.

Why did everything seem so different? So heavy? Taking a step forwards, she nearly ran into a tree, who’s limbs scratched the ground whenever the winds blew. A sharp gasp escaped the young filly’s mouth as she caught herself in time, things out here seemed more dangerous then she had first thought. Taking a few seconds to gain her balance, Oceana headed towards the familiar roar of the crashing water. Around her, the subtle movements of other creatures stirred her imagination, what could they have been? Would they eat her? Or could they be her friends? Oh it was so tempting to change course away from the crashing sound to follow the sounds of something else, but something within her head told her to keep going. There was something ahead that she just had to see.

The trees started to part, the air becoming more clear and the sounds of water louder. The hard packed ground was replaced with sand that made her already unsteady steps worse. It wasn‘t long before Oceana found herself laying on her belly, nose planted in the ground. Pulling her head from the sand, she spat out the grainy stuff and sneezed it from her nostrils. Laying before her was the ocean, the salty breezes wafted around her, filling her being with their song. Above, sea bound birds circled high and long on the thermals. Craning her neck, she looked out over the clear blue waters that stretched as far as her young eyes could see. But what laid out there? Could the horizon simply just drop into nothing? A yearning feeling started to build, she wanted to know, wanted to learn what was really out there. Beyond her home and the horizon.

Nerissa returned to the nest, accompanied by her day-old eldest. The foal never ceased to fascinate her - so like her, and yet so like the father as well! She hoped her daughter had inherited her wit and not Nova's temper. As they approached the nest, Nerissa couldn't help but notice that there were now more eggshell fragments, lighter than the ones already scattered about.

Did another of my children hatch, or did something come along and break the egg open? Wondered a panicked Nerissa, as she sniffed at the flat pieces. Her second foal was nowhere to be seen!

Oddly enough, Nesaea seemed better attuned to her sister than her mother was. When nearing the nest she was hit by this wave of elation, and trotted a little faster than she normally did, almost walking full-length in front of her mother. As Nerissa stooped to inspect the egg fragments, Nesaea let out a happy squeal and charged forward through the trees. She ran into her little sister nose-to-tail, then backed up, shaking her head.

Oceana was so far gone in her imagination that she didn't hear her sister race up behind her. But she did squeal and fall forwards, front hooves splashing into the shallows of the waves. Turning quick, her sides heaving a little, Oceana looked back at the filly that had run into her. She certainly looked like her, the colors and patterns were different of course. Tilting her head to one side Oceana watched her older sister.

"Sister?" she asked, though was there really any need to? "Where's Momma?" She had forgotten that when she hatched, she had left the nest sight.

Looking back towards where she had come from, Oceana tilted her head once again watching the trees. Not knowing what to expect to come from them next. Their mother. Something more scary? That was something that she didn't want to see, the scary something. Glancing back to her sister, Oceana smiled turning back to the seas. A longing look back on her face as she wanted to go so badly, to explore. Sadly, she wasn't old enough and the seas would surely be the death of her at this age.

"I wonder what's out there...'

"Sister!" Came the reply, accompanied with a firm nod. "Momma coming soon."

Nesaea headed next to her lighter sibling, so that the water just touched their legs as the waves lapped at the shore. She stretched her neck forward, squinting at the horizon.

"'Ma told me there are AI'LENNs far over the water. She hatched on one!" She cheerfully informed her sister, eager to share what she knew. Oh, they were going to have such fun together - Nesaea finally had a playmate who was her size and wouldn't turn everything they both saw into a long, boring lesson!

Nerissa, meanwhile, heard the high-pitched voices of her children and left her nest for the beach. As she neared them she glanced up and down the beach, and even towards the horizon, checking for any living creatures who would dare threaten the well-being of her foals. Once she deemed their surroundings safe, the mare finally went up to them and absentmindedly nuzzled her second daughter.

So like Nova, and not enough like me. And if her behaviour after hatching is any indicator - empty-headed and a daydreamer to boot. Pity.

Well, at least Nesaea has a companion.

"Welcome to the world, daughter," she murmured lovingly... but certainly not as much as when she first greeted the elder. "Why don't you tell me your name?"

Oceana watched her sister as she joined her looking out over the waters. Pale yellow eyes diverted themselves back to the rolling waves that seemed to capture her attention more then anything else. Wow, there were other things out there? Oceana wanted to see what was on these... What where they again? Ai'lenns? The word made even her mind stumble, there had to be another name for them, sure.

"Really? That's so cool, maybe someday we can go and explore them? I know I want to, what adventures could be had." Oh yes, Oceana was itching to do some exploring, well that was when her ears twitched to someone else approaching from behind.

Turning around, she beheld a mare, that looked much like her sister, so that was mother? Deep down she knew that already without thinking about it. This one was her mother, their mother and the bonds were strong, Oceana had felt that even when she was still within her egg. A smile brightening her face as she nuzzled her mother back.

"Oceana, I'm Oceana." She nodded giving a small glance back towards the water. "Sister says there are AI'LENNs out there. I do wonder what lives on them, if anything." Most of it being thinking out loud, much too much of a daydreamer.

Oceana... not a bad name at all, honouring her grandmother too.

Nerissa felt marginally kinder towards the hatchling for her choice of name, and decided to answer nicely rather than tell her off for thinking aloud. She shrugged lightly over the water at an island she couldn't see, yet knew was there.

"There's nothing much to them. They are barren, lonely places - all rocks and sand. They're surrounded by the sea. No way off or on unless you can swim, or have wings. When you're both old enough we'll all swim over." She turned to allow Oceana to suckle if she wanted to - newborns tended to be hungry after struggling to break free from the egg.

"For now, though, the tide is not something you should face."

"Awww!" Pouted Nesaea at her mother's judgement - she had hoped the requests of two foals combined would be enough to sway that stance at least! But she knew not to push it, or she would face another of Momma's freezing, sarcastic tirades.

Instead, she moved slightly further away from the waves, walking oddly so her hoofprints formed a straight line... then, taking care where she stepped and dragged her hooves, Nesaea began to draw a flower.

Oceana turned her gaze away from the waves before her to her mother. A pout formed from her lips, but such a thing wouldn't sway anyone. She wasn't good with the 'sad eyes', eve for just being out of the egg. She didn't really want to wait to grow up to head off and see i these masses within the seas were what her mother proclaimed them to be. Something else that tore her away from the waves was the sudden growl of her stomach. Apparently Oceana had forgotten the hunger she had since... Well she didn't know about it until now actually..

Glancing from her sister to her mother again as food was presented to her in the motion of her mother shifting positions. Well she was hungry now, and food was being offered, leaping... Well not really 'leaping', she came forward to suckle. The warm milk quenching her thirst as the growling in her belly slowly stopped, behind her, her tail twitched happily. After a while, Ocean pulled away from her mother and looked over towards her sister.

"Oooo, that's looking pretty sister." She pipped up, licking the milk from her lips before heading over towards the drawing, but ends up tripping over a buried rock and landing face first in the sand. Not again... she though pulling her head from the sand, coughing and sputtering sand about. "Stupid legs." She muttered out loud.

"Ohhhh..." said Nesaea, feeling sadder than ever. Her flower, so close to completion, and so wonderfully perfectly nicely symmetrical, had been mussed to oblivion by Oceana's fall.

Nerissa scowled heavily - she cared not whether Oceana had done it intentionally or not, but the fact was that her favourite had been working at something and the younger had undone all of it. Also, teats sore from feeding three foals did not put this mare in the best of moods.

"Don't blame your legs when you're the one who's clumsy," she admonished sharply.

"Ma! She din't mean to. We draw 'nuther one together." The little foal flattened her ears against her skull at her mother's sharp words. Why was she being so mean to her hatchling sister? Nesaea herself hadn't been much better when she first broke free from her egg.

Hmm. Since Oceana couldn't walk too good, she'd have to use another way to draw. Closing her eyes so the sand wouldn't get in them, Nesaea dug her baby horn into the sand and drew a shallow petal.

With a wide grin, she looked towards her sister expectantly, some damp sand clinging to her horn.

"Your turn!"

Her mother's words cut like sharp stones, leaping to her hooves, she all but coward behind her sister. She feared her mother at the moment, feared her wrath just for tripping over something and saying her legs were stupid for letting her fall. Her had low and ears fallen back to her skull, Oceana watched her mother before she was left standing alone. Looking towards Nesaea as she drew a petal in the sand, her head tilting a little when it was announced that it was her turn. Standing a little confused she finally realized what was being asked and smiled.

"Kay." Oceana nodded stepping carefully over towards the single petal that was drawn out.

Lowering her head, as she had seen her sister do, she carefully, though not expertly drew a petal beside the other. Minding her footing, Oceana finished the petal and stepped back. Wet sand still clinging to her own stub of a horn, she grinned back to Nesaea, giving a 'your turn' look. She wasn't looking to speak too much anymore, she didn't wish for her mother to lash again, even with Nesaea there too, it seemed that her mother didn't much... She didn't know, but with the first lashing, she was in for a struggle...

With little more than a toss of her head and a loud "hrrrmph" through her nose, Nerissa set off down the beach, leaving the two foals alone. If Nesaea wanted to defend her sister, so be it. Meanwhile... she had something better to do than berate Oceana: hunt for herself, to provide both of them milk.

It was Nesaea's turn again - she lowered her horn and confidently drew the next petal, quietly satisfied that she and her sister were spending time together in peace.

Momma's too mean to Oceana, she thought. Us foals gotta stick together! I'll just have to defend her whenever I can...

"Yours!" She exclaimed cheerfully, very much looking forward to their finished flower and many more days of playing together.
