What's the difference between myth and religion? This gets some interesting answers so I thought I'd throw it out.

Oh and I tried to be as all inclusive with the poll as I could, if anyone has an objection about it, please let me know.

Myths are less preachy and are generally more interesting to hear about.
Hmm...Listening to someone talk about the legend of big foot and the loch ness monster......Or sitting listening to people preach about how great and powerful such and such is and why you should feel bad for not worshipping him.

I choose the first option.

i agree with hawk the wise. i am satanist, but i would get soooo bored if someone tried preaching to me about it for more than six and a half seconds.

and would you please include satanist in the pole if possible please?

I say nothing... but as an atheist my views are colored. I see no true difference between the two.

Your poll is severaly flawed.

Pagan is the term for those non-Abrahamic, those who do not follow Christianity, Islam or Judaism. Some might also count Bahai'i into that group. So, both Wicca (without the n) and Hinduism is a pagan religion. To create a name for those pagans who practice magic and worships god/gods without a clear name for what they are doing, call them ecclectic neo-pagans.

jacobyshaddix23: Satanism is a neo-pagan religion.

And to answer tyour question; a myth in more of a story of god/gods/whatever, while a religion is a religion with ceremonies and dogma.

I think there is a difference between religion and myths. Religion is generally a set of beliefs in a certain thing, person, or idea, and usually has a group of people devoted to or following it. A myth is a story generated to explain something, normally about right and wrong, the creation of the world, how the world tick, ect. Myths are found all the time in religion, but myths can exist that are not connected to any religion. That's how I see the difference, anyway. If there is a religion out there, and I mean a true, recognized religion, that does not have a single myth related to it, I would sincerely like to know about it. 3nodding Thanks!

Hm... Anyone else find the results of the poll intriguing? They're not what you'd expect when you consider the percentages in the world in general, and the U.S.A. particularly.

Anyways, myth versus religion. Here's my answer brought to you courtesy of dictionary.com.

myth- a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, esp. one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature

religion- a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs

A legend is a lie attaining the dignity of age.

I forget who said that, but I'm not with that. There was probably a basis to most myths - dinosaurs were thought to be dragons.

Religion... religion is a way to the truth. Oh sure, science tells us how, but religion can tell us why. And there are a lot of things that can't be explained by science but are explained via religion.

Anyway, I'm something akin to being a witch, pagan, wiccan and even pastafarianism. I'd probably be closest to Paganism, although I use elements and sigils from other things.

actaully science explains how and why

legends are usually over embeleshed stories

myths are stories that dont have allot of proof that everyone is going to accept about religion that help explain ideas and events from a religious view (for example greek myths were used to explain the stories of the gods and there powers etc)

you might want to put other as an option on youre poll sense youre poll just scratches the surface when it comes to the horde of religions there are

myths are more interesting and religion is confusing

true, but its only confusing if you dont need a religion, for those of us who need a religion or like the one we currently have, its far from confusing
but thats just me biggrin

Myths are generally pagan stories from a pagan religion that belonged to an entire country or empire. Religion is a set of beliefs, where myths stem from.

actually the first part is false
christainity has hundreds of myths so tis not just polythiectic cultures that have them cool

and not all myths were nation, empire etc wide, some were local ones that stayed that way while others spread
