I'm going to a new school, and I'm supposed to bring my instrument on the first day, but ACCORDION IS NOT AN ACCEPTED INSTRUMENT THERE! DX
You have to play woodwinds or strings. Should I switch to recorder for the years I'm going there?

I agree! but, if they have strings maybe you should give the violin a try. Just because it's such a beautiful instrument. I played that when I was in 5th grade. When we moved the band here didn't have anything remotely close to an orchestra so I went with the clarinet. which in my opinion is really easy to learn. 3nodding

You play accordion? That's kickass! B] I'd say go with a stringed instrument or clarinet, or even saxophone. Saxophone also has similar fingerings to the recorder, but many people agree that it's easier to learn. Plus it's awesome. =D Recorder, though...I don't know if those are really used after elementary school. xd

Terra of the Lilies You play accordion? That's kickass! B] I totally agree! I am very jealous right now. We never used recorders in our band. We don't really have strings either. Just woodwinds, percussion and brass. Go with something like the flute or the sax (they have similar fingerings to each other, and I KNOW for a fact that the fingering for C on the recorder is pretty much, if not, exactly the same as it is on the sax. :]) Yep, clarinet would be a good choice too. Except for on the flute, if you has a cupid's bow upper lip, don't go with the flute.

Try playing the flute because the recorder is in the same key as the flute, which is C. The Clarinet, which I play, is in the key of Bb and all the saxes except the tenor, which is also in Bb, is in Eb. I would be adventurous though, try playing one of the string instruments they are hard to learn, but well worth it in the end.

saxopone is easiest. I learned it in about a day. If you can play the accordian, you can definitely play the saxophone
'cause I know for a fact recorders aren't accepted at my school crying , don't know about yours...

Thanks a million everyone! I've tried flute, I couldn't make a sound, but I passed out from hyperventilation.
I HAVE a clarinet that was my mom's when she was my age, so I'm going to get a new reed and try that. I also have a violin, but I got it on eBay and it sucks.

Ouch? Well the fingerings were the same as recorder, (or at least VERY similar) I found that out when I learned it. (At least most are the same) as in the general CDEFGABC but they'll be different when you get more advanced stuff, but you'll have learned well enough by then.

You play the friggan accordion! That is so amazing!
I would just sit down and figure out what you /want/ to play. If you have anyone cool in yer band, you can explain yer situation to them and they'll help you learn any instrument.

I would play saxophone, only because IMO its easy and fast to learn. similar to the recorder, easy to learn, easy to make a sound. especially if your starting out into the wonderful world of woodwinds 8D
