Of the rising number in murders, none was so surprising as that of a prominent St.Eva millionaire, Nicholas Corey. His body was found drowned and floating in the shallow waters of the public fountain in a generally safe part of the city, his wallet still with him.

At the same time, it wasn't so surprising. The answer was rather obvious and sitting in the front row, a widow's veil shading her tearless eyes.

The funeral was full, full of friends, and whoever had the morbid curiosity to come watch as Corey's widow laid the man to rest. His family had been something of an icon to St.Eva for generations. The Corey's part of the initial establishment. With the passing of Nicholas, so passed the last of the Coreys.

Roxanna curled her hand around the lace handkerchief as the priest went on about the fate of murderers and the exaltation of the innocent, noting more than a few looks in her direction. She let out a soft noise, standing up and tried to excuse herself quietly. "I need a moment," she whispered as she pushed by a few people, making her way outside of the building.

"feeling guilty?" A sharp voice whispered back as she passed by. Roxanna bristled slightly but ignored the question. She recognized the voice of Nick's mistress well enough. She passed by without comment.

Mrs. Klaus was one of the curious onlookers, though she had left her daughter Rebecca at home. "Not a place for nice little girls," she had said.

So... there was the infamous Roxanna, who'd been involved in one scandal after another since her arrival in St. Eva. She was always in the tabloids. Mrs. Klaus nodded to herself in satisfaction. Last month, the Enquirer had an article about how her husband tried to kill her for being such a treacherous witch, and how she'd escaped with the help of aliens. They even had pictures! That was the best thing about the Enquirer--they always had evidence. You could trust that.

Well. Witches always get what's coming to them--the stake!

It wasn't the kinda day outside for a funeral. You know, in the movies, it's always dreary and rainy outside. Today though, the sun shone brightly in a clear sky, bird chirping, while a gentle breeze kept the temperature at a comfortable level.

"Yeah, there shouldn't be a funeral today," Olivia Craw mumbled to no one in particular, lighting her second cigarette since she had joined the small crowd gathered just outside of where they would lay Nicholas Corey to rest.

Not being one to judge someone she had never met, Olivia came to the cemetery out of boredom; just a spectator watching the spectators. Things had been strange lately. Stranger than usual...

She blew a smoke ring towards the blue sky above her, "Everything's been odd lately."

Marcus Shipp was a friend of Nicholas Corey, and, by proxy, his wife. He stood at the front of the gathering, head held low, his bodyguard, Lou, holding the same pose behind him.

He noted Roxanna's passing, and excused himself, motioning to Lou to hold their spot while he followed her, staying a distance behind.

Marcus heard the snide comment from a woman he had never met before.
"Excuse me? Is there a problem, miss?" Marcus said, stepping out into their line of sight, resting his hands in pockets.

Roxanna turned to face him. She stood at a diminutive 1/2 an inch below five feet. "Marcus Shipp," She acknowledged with a slight nod to her chin. "No, there is no problem. Other than my wish for a bit of air. Thank you for the concern."

"Are you truly going to buy that?" The woman who had spoken earlier fixed her gaze on Marcus. She was pretty, but the expression on her face sharpened her features a tad too much.

Mrs. Klaus turned to Olivia with a sharp nod, overhearing the mutter. "More odd every day!" she agreed, quoting the Enquirer. "But you know, the signs are always there. There are always signs, but no one listens, you see. It's all very important, but no one listens. If they're not blind to it, they're the ones covering it all up. It's soo tragic."

Staring blankly into the crowd, Olivia nodded, "Tragic, I guess. You wonder if some deserved it, but with how many people just up and getting whacked lately..." a pause to take a quick drag of her cigarette, "Could be just a dude killing people to get his jollies off, could be something bigger...dunno."

Marcus shot the mistress a hard look, before turning back to Roxanna.
"Come with me. You don't need to deal with harlots like her."

Roxanna tilted her head slightly, a slight suspicion in her eyes. "Why should I come with you, Marcus Shipp?"

"back to the service, Roxanna. That is what I meant."

Roxanna closed her eyes briefly. She could feel the crowds watching, a good number of them judging, and her back stiffened a slight bit. Her dark eyes opened and she gave Marcus a short nod, gently placing her hand on his arm. "Yes, back to the service, Marcus Shipp."

As they moved back, the priest was nearing his end words. He gave a brief prayer for St.Eva and its citizens and those who Nicholas left behind, then a cellist began to play as the crowds were directed around and the casket began to lower.

Roxanna watched closely, and made a visible shudder, though it was more for the sound of the cello than for Nicholas. But, being Nick's favorite instrument, it couldn't have not been played at the funeral.

Marcus' guard made his way to them, looming behind Marcus and Roxanna, head held low as Nicholas was laid to rest. Marcus cast Roxanna a glance.
"Are you going to be okay? I can always have the Guard see to your needs."

"The Guard is better fit for those who can't help themselves, Marcus Shipp. I thank you for your concern, but there is no need." She turned her eyes from the casket, with Nicholas gone, it was going to be difficult knowing who to trust. Though Marcus seemed kind enough, there were few people who offered kindness without strings, and Roxanna felt a certain wariness.

The stub of her missing finger stung slightly, reminding her that it would be good to find some water and soon. Too many cats were on the loose, some of them probably in the crowd, if not at her side.

"The Guard is meant to help people, period. In a city plauged with seemingly random murders, and there's a lot of people who want to see you in the ground next to Nicholas for something you didn't do... Well, you're going to need a friend. One that can back you up."
