As many of you know, it is the end of August and school is back in session. I myself have left my home and kinsmen behind in search of a better education in Saint Augustine, Florida (oldest city in the USA, thankyouverymuch!). In my first day here, I have met many interesting people and I must confess to being one of the 'interesting' people about campus.
One particular fellow immediately noticed my goggles and commented that he liked my "cyber goggles." I thanked him and kindly informed him that they were not, in fact, cyberpunk but steampunk. This fellow proceeded to tell me that they were not steampunk because they were not metallic enough. Well! I kept my calm, remained visibly unruffled, and continued with polite sci-fi conversation.
How dare he, this guy who is fascinated by nanotechnology, who knows nothing of the old sci-fi (Wells and his companions) claim to know more about my subculture than me? It was hours ago and I still fume quietly over the matter. I readily admit that aside from my goggles I was in regular street clothes, but he was no more anachronistic than me.
Has this happened to anyone else? Have you ever been called out for not being steampunk enough?

One of my friends that I know, said that steampunk and classy dressing don't go together. I should have slapped him.

What blasphemy! My word, I suppose that some people lacking class find it in their fancy to assert their ignorance upon other members of society. Pah!

How awful! You did the good thing by telling him what they were and not getting visibly angry. I'm sorry he's being ignorant.

It's just since because of his ignorance, I'm sure he just likes to be right, nothing more. Still, it must have been very irking, you did the right thing by keeping a level appearance.
People shouldn't dictate about fashions that they evidently don't know enough about. Pah.

I commend you for keeping your cool after such a heinous comment! I personally would have found it near impossible to bite my tongue if someone told me that my attire was 'not steampunk enough'.
Bah. What rubbish. scream

Some people are just better off ignored. If he has nothing better to do than argue about the steampunk level of somebody's goggles then he really is a sad person.

Have I said how much I love you all? I dearly love you.
He has since redeemed himself by coming to me for advice on things to modify and how to go about modification. The balance is restored.

Dear, I would suggest that instead of being angry (though I offer my approval of not allowing it to show), you feel pity for the poor man. Such mistaken pretension must be an unfortunate personal trait of his, and one that will stand in the way of friendships for the rest of his life.
Also, be grateful that you've run into at least one fellow who knows of the culture at all. I have yet to meet even a single educated bystander, and, even more astoundingly, seem to be attending the one university in the world WITHOUT A SINGLE SCI-FI/FANTASY CLUB OR ORGANIZATION. It is unnerving, and incredibly depressing. (Nor does this town have a single comic book store. Therefore, this is not a town, but a village.)

Yay! I'm glad he's admitting that you may know more about such things, it can be hard to do so.
Also, I'm quite impressed with Iseult Afire's University, although a little depressed by it all. Not one such club? D: I hope it isn't all bad.

I personally love the place, and would not choose anywhere else. I'm just... well, screwed, so far as steampunk company goes.

blue_lutra How dare he, this guy who is fascinated by nanotechnology, who knows nothing of the old sci-fi (Wells and his companions) claim to know more about my subculture than me? It was hours ago and I still fume quietly over the matter. I readily admit that aside from my goggles I was in regular street clothes, but he was no more anachronistic than me. Has this happened to anyone else? Have you ever been called out for not being steampunk enough? Well, being as I'm on a very limited income, I can't afford to dress steampunk as I'd like to, nyao, so I can't say that it's happened to me. However, since I often wear a full cloak with capelet and top hat, both in black (with a lovely blue lining for my cloak and its capelet), I do get compliments on my unusual attire, as well as the poor benighted soul who requests that I pull a rabbit out of my topper--who I then take sweet revenge upon by informing them that I'm a mad scientist, not an illusionist, and watching them suddenly remember appointments elsewhere in a most alacritous fashion, nyao...
As a science fiction and fantasy aficionado since I was just a kitten, however, I often wince whenever I see run-of-the-mill fantasy compared to Prof. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or see just how woefully underinformed many people are about the "classics", such as vampire fans not ever having read Bram Stoker's Dracula, let alone Sheridan LeFanu's "Carmilla" or Dr. Polidori's "The Vampire", or SF fans who've never even heard of Robert Heinlein, let alone H.G. Wells! {wince}
It simply makes my fur bristle, nyao! >^_^<
