L= uke, (raito, after L's death)
M= Mello, or Mero, whatever
N= near
did anyone notice these three letters are, essentially, the middle 3?
and also, what happens after you die, as if you use a deathnote, you can go to neither heaven nor hell, the realm of the shinigami is neither, am i correct?
(i had to get rid of the first half of that title gonk )

I'd noticed the alphabet thing, though I don't really think it'll play a big part in the story~ It's more like a little easter egg for the readers :3 [I didn't know L's name was Luke o.o]
I read your second theory on another thread, and it sounds very plausible. The realm of the shinigami is pretty plain and there's nothing to do, so it really does seem like limbo... Eeek, what if Higuchi came back as a shinigami!? o.o

is fine... ninja i didnt think of dl-ing the whole series till i wet to that sub forum for scanlations, now i know what everyone is talking about surprised ninja
*coughcough* anyways... i thought about this... for like the entire last half of this week, also another, un serious question
if L is three different detectives... could he have a competitive bowling game with himself? *this is of course till after he dies* xp

Well if that were the case and humans who use the death note become shinigami, raito would just keep going even if he were to die.
