Soooo, I haven't been to the doctor yet, but I'm fairly sure I'm developing type two diabetes. Both of my parents have it, and not having a job for 3-4 months, I did a lot of nothing, so I gained a bit of weight. Now that I'm out and about and active again, I find myself getting tired more easily, getting weak/nauseous/dizzy when I don't eat "on time" (every 3 1/2-4 hours), which then relives it's self when I do eat or drink something sugary. I've also been extremely thirsty lately, but I honestly chalked that up to the fact it's summer until I started feeling sick when I don't eat. That's what really got me thinking. I'm gonna go get tested soon.

Growing up, I was always taught that diabetes was some horrible disease and you can't eat any sweets and it wrecks your life. Obviously I don't see it the same way anymore, but it's still a frightening concept. I'm a pretty healthy person and I've never had anything really wrong with me health-wise (mentally is a different story).

So for those in the guild that do have diabetes, how do you manage?

EEK, I hope I don't have it, cause that sounds like what's been happening to me lately. My summer job consists of biking around all day. (I average 50km a day.) I would eat constantly, but really healthy. I'm a bit of a health junkie, so lots of whole wheat breads, grains, nuts, veggies, fruits etc. And drank AT LEAST 2L of water a day. (and our territory is lots of farm land so having to urinate frequently was not pleasant lol) Anyways. That ended 2 weeks ago. I almost stopped activity all together the first couple days. Then I went camping, and, didn't do much cardio but was active swimming and paddling etc. Still I gradually ate less and less healthy as I ran out of my own food and started eating what my mother buys (pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs etc.) Then with being back in school, I haven't been able to eat constantly like I'm use to, and besides walking 4 blocks to my school, I don't exercise at all. As a result I've been EXTREMELY tired, I feel like I never get enough sleep even when I do. I have full meals, but after 2-3 hours of not eating I feel like my body is sucking the nutrients from my bones.

My mother chalks it up to me not eating enough meat and just offers me more junk food. But when I eat heavy foods like that I get even more tired. I'm thinking more, it's something my body is not use to. I'm obviously not getting enough exercise, as I managed to gain 3lbs even though I haven't been eating as much or all that unhealthy. Also I haven't been grazing throughout the day like my body is use to so my metabolism might be a bit shocked right now.

I'm planning (well see if I manage it) on getting on my elliptical at least 2 mornings during the week. And I'm trying to convince my mother to buy me certain healthy snacks. Like today I had a 3 bean salad and I made myself a chicken wrap with cheese, lettuce and red pepper hummus. I had a peach. some grapes, and walnuts to snack on. But then supper was McDonnalds gonk And all this talk about food has made me hungry again.

Anyways, as for if you have it. One of the guys on my mountain bike/camping trip had diabetes. And if he hadn't told us, I never would have known. (It is a good idea to tell people, in the event you pass out, although unlikely, so they know why and what to do.)

im also usually tired alot and get dizzy easily, but thats because of my abnormaly low blood pressure. i usually eat alot of red meat and salt and that helps me a bit.
you should go to the doctor and get it checked out. its amazing isnt it? we take out pets to the vet at the drop of a hat and care alot about their nutrition, but when it comes to our own health we put off going to the doctor

Oh ya, I have that too, low bp. Not dangerously or abnormally low, but pretty much at the bottom of the acceptable line. Not high enough to give blood sometimes.

I'm prediabetic. But, I have a HUGE sweet tooth, so it never works out well. and I really need like pounds upon pounds of motivation to get me going to do something, and I usually get it done unless the drive fades down.

the problem is that I like to run. I like the feeling, and I would love to just run until the end of the earth if my lungs didn't start to hurt and I got acid reflux (reflex?). I get excercise asthma, so it's no wonder that I don't exceed in gym class. Even biking the two miles to Wal-mart is enough to make me taste the acid. s**t, as I type this, I drink Mountain Dew and wear furry slippers and complain of the cold xD (it's 60 degrees. this is the worst ending of summer evar ;-; )

Hahaha, I'm wearing my massive bear slippers, sweat pants, sweater/hoodie. Drinking hot tea. I had agility with Cowboy in the rain this morning. I can't seem to get warm lol. It's 14 degrees celcius here. Probably due to my low bp, I am pretty much ALWAYS cold. Yet I love skiing. Here's me in June, with long sleeves lol.(next to me is my supervisor and douchebag ex boyfriend...)

I just noticed this topic! I happen to be an insulin dependent diabetic. (the issue of type 1 /type 2 is complicated in my case, I had insulin resistance before I got ill, but I developed pancreatitis and the damage left me diabetic)

Honestly, I wouldn't assume you have Diabetes from the symptoms you described. Feeling dizzy and sick from not eating and improving with food is usually LOW blood sugar not high blood sugar. Yes, diabetics experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) but generally that is diabetics on treatment (too much medication or insulin without food, or too much exercise) An untreated diabetic's sugar is going to be too high rather than too low.

I'm not saying not to get tested. It's a good idea to keep an eye on your sugar anyway, especially if your parents are both diabetics. When you get the blood test scripts from the doctor, don't let them just prescribe a fasting blood sugar, you want an a1c or a glucose tolerance test. In the mean time, if you are really worried, borrow a meter from one of your parents. use a new lancet. take your sugar in the AM after a 8 hour fast, and see how the numbers look. Also, take your sugar when you start to feel "sick" from not eating, see if you are high or low.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks everyone.

@deranged: I will let you know what happens when I get tested and I will follow your advice about the tests. As for testing my blood on my own, my dad doesn't live with us and my mom bought a meter but never bought any strips because she "can't afford" them. I have to make an appointment soon but I've been working so much it's ridiculous. I guess feeling sick could also be because I've been more active, but I used to work 14 hour days and I never felt sick then.

I know strips can be expensive if you don't have health coverage, but testing your blood is SO important and there are usually programs to get things like test strips. Does she qualify for medicare/medicaid? You can also order test strips on-line for cheaper then you can get them in the pharmacy. Maybe you could suggest this to your mom. I don't mean to sound preachy, it's just so important for a diabetic to check their sugar and too many people just ignore it. Good luck.

We have health insurance where all doctor(/dentist/eyedoctor) visits are free (no copay) and prescriptions are usually $1-$2, so I don't know why she would have to pay for the strips. I'll talk to her about ordering them online. Sometimes I think she was lying about it for sympathy, to tell the truth. Unless she's just afraid of jabbing herself everyday or something. I have yet to go for a visit because I have to send them my stubs and everything to see if I'm still eligible for my insurance. I know I am, but you know how people are. Always gotta refigure things when you get a different income. You don't sound at all preachy, I've got a lot of diabetic relatives and they're all so a**l about their testing and everything I expected my mom to be the same way.
