It was the second day of school. Many students were still trying to adjust to the earlier wake up time and went to class groggy or pumped with caffeine in an attempt to wake themselves up. However, due to Ellie's summer schedule, she didn't even feel remotely burdened by her new schedule. As she prepared for her first class of the day, she set her things at her desk and began to make rounds inside the classroom. The girl had a spring in her step which many lacked at that time in the morning.

As a general observation, she knew guys tended to take this part of the "back to school" process worse than girls. Where she'd usually seek out boys to talk to, since they were easier to understand, she instead seeked out a possible girl to talk to. Ellie mentally noted how she did not plan on making a habit out of this. However, it wouldn't do her any good to talk to a guy who's face was planted firmly into the surface of his desk. With a smile brightening up the features on her face, she looked for someone who seemed interesting. Or at least someone who seemed more awake than the majority of the class.

Tallulah Cowden, yes, that Tallulah Cowden, our lady of the perpetual damp hair, had been up since 6:15. Already this morning she had eaten a healthy breakfast, swam laps with the swim team, and gone over her notes on last night's chapters from The Scarlet Letter. Her overly large brown eyes were alert and awake and wide in a way that utterly defied the early hour of the morning.

Like the good student she was, she was copying down her schedule for the day into her planner. It was a small, blue book with stars in the corners of the pages. She was writing in a coppery gel pen that seemed utterly incongruous with her otherwise serious, scholarly demeanor, and the color of the pen matched the clip keeping her wet hair out of her eyes.

Tallulah was one of only two students in the room who actually looked ready for class.

She pursed her lips, dotted a final 'i' - something about history notecards - and capped the pen. She blew on the page, pressed her hand to make certain the ink was dry, and closed the book.

She looked around the room in a way that was vaguely reminiscent of a meerkat surveying its surroundings, and sighed. Homeroom was the single most worthless fifteen minutes of the school day.

It came across as no surprise that the only one awake was the infamous Tallulah. Ellie had never had a class with her before, however, this girl's reputation was well known throughout the grade level. She had heard this girl was a busy body aiming to be top of the class.

Rather casually, she made her way over to her fellow classmate. With a bit of a cheeky grin, she teased the girl slightly with a harmless "I see yer hard at work already!" Ellie's golden eyes glanced down and just barely caught sight of what Tallulah had been working on. If it weren't for her prior knowledge to this girl's schedule, she might have been a bit more surprised.

Her eyes once again surveyed the classroom, double checking that the teacher hadn't arrived yet. "...so..." she started off "...what's up?"

Tallulah put her book back into her back in one practiced motion. She looked up at the blonde girl, narrowed her eyes, and asked, "Do I know you?"

She looked familiar, but one could never be sure. People transfered to and from Meadowview all the time, and at the start of the school year especially. Needless to say, the question went unanswered for the moment. She looked around for the teacher, but saw not even the faintest indication that she even planned to make an appearance this class period.

"The sooner the bell rings and classes begin, the better," she said pleasantly. "Don't you think?"

With a big grin, Ellie shrugged her shoulders. "Dunno, we're in the same grade and I've been at the school for a while. However, I ain't in yer head, so I can't answer that one." One more casual glance around the room, then she added in "I just felt like talkin' to someone who wasn't a zombie." It was blunt, but the truth. She leaned onto the girl's desk slightly with her arms, carefully trying to avoid anything set on the surface of the desk.

Figuring she should be polite, she shifted herself slightly and offered out her hand in greeting "...and if ya don't know me, name's Ellie Spectre!" At least this time, she wasn't covered in oil drippings, so there should be no problem in getting this girl to shake hands, right?

Tallulah shook the proffered hand. "Tallulah Cowden," she answered, offering the girl a slight smile. Well, she certainly seemed... enthusiastic? Well, you couldn't begrudge her for trying. She looked around the class and laughed a little bit.

"I agree," she nodded. "This place is pretty dead."

At the next desk over, a boy was snoring softly. Every time he exhaled, his bangs puffed up. It was almost like something out of a cartoon. Her smiled widened.

"School of the living dead," said Tallulah wryly. "They're not hungry for knowledge - just brains."

Being a bit boyish for a girl, when Tallulah offered her own hand, Ellie's hand grasped onto it firmly. After all, a proper handshake meant you put some feeling into it. It also spoke of your own character. Far too many times, girls hand limp noodle handshakes, and it was pathetic!

"Nice t'officially meetcha!" Though Ellie was completely awake, she only just noticed the girl's wet hair. It meant one of two things: she either took a shower and didn't dry her hair, or she was on some sort of team that used the pool in the morning. With her prior knowledge, she would be willing to bet money on the second option.

Upon the mention of the Zombie-school, Ellie's brows perked up. "Oh! Sounds like it could be an awesome video game! I do know there is a comic called 'Highschool of the Dead.' Never read it, but I heard about it from one of my friends." Holding out both her thumb and pointer finger, she then pretended her fingers were some sort of gun and shot it off at the boy sitting next to Tallulah.

"Pow!"

"Pow," echoed Tallulah, a bit lamely. While she was certainly awake at this hour, Ellie seemed downright wired. She wondered how much caffeine she had had so far today, but elected not to actually ask.

The prospect of doing anything productive with homeroom seemed to be getting further away by the second. Though, to be truthful, Tallulah was not exactly sure what else she had left to be done. She had arguably over-prepared for today and could think of nothing else to improve on.

In lieu of better things to do, she decided to give this thing called 'socializing' a try.

"You like comics?" she asked.

The boy at the next desk did not move, or otherwise acknowledge, that he had just been shot by a zombie hunter with an overactive imagination.

"Oh no! I used to read them like crazy as a kid, but I grew out of comics. Got better things t'do with mah time!" She pointed her "gun" at a couple other students and let out a few of "pew, pew, pew!" sounds.

Fortunately, there was no teacher still, so Ellie could get away with goofing off a bit. "Naw, I prefer quality time with my car." That would have sounded cool to anyone who didn't know her. However, she meant the half-broken hunk of metal in her garage.

Being relatively polite, she put down her shooting hand and looked back to Tallulah. "So, what sorts of things'er you into?" Ellie could only imagine school activities, but she kept that tucked away in her mind only. Who knew, maybe the busy-bee would surprise her?

"I swim," said Tallulah, as if the wet hair and jacket that said 'Meadowview Swim and Dive' on the back were not enough of an indication. "I volunteer at the animal shelter and the food bank," she continued, and was aware this made her sound like a goody two shoes but there was really nothing to do to excuse the truth.

"I'm in the Model UN," she added. "We meet mondays. I'm Finland."

It hadn't been her original choice, but she had gradually come to love her little chunk of Scandinavia.

"Do you drive?" she asked. Clearly this earned some admiration in Tallulah's eyes. Between SAT prep courses and athletic competitions, she had not gotten around to taking driver's ed. Other than that, though, this girl seemed silly, and if it weren't for the fact that this was homeroom and pointless, Tallulah would not otherwise have paid her much attention.

With a chuckle, Ellie pointed out the obvious: "Damn, you keep busy!" Mentally, she was making note that these were probably all preparations for getting into college.

Maybe I should so some stuff like that? she couldn't help but ponder for a moment. However, she shook her head, causing her long strands of hair to sway a bit. College could be nice, but it was nowhere near what she wanted to do in the future.

Once more, her golden eyes licked the room before returning their polite glance to Tallulah. Still no teacher. Maybe the teacher was late? She managed to catch the question directed at her mid-thought. She smirked a bit. "Yeah, I do." Learner's permit was good enough for now, right? It would probably be a couple more months until she got her license, but it didn't mean she couldn't practice.

"...wonder when the teacher's gonna get 'ere...?"

"Good question," said Tallulah with a frown. It wasn't as if homeroom teachers actually did anything, but it still did not reflect particularly well if they were absent. Teachers were supposed to set a good example, and this was anything but.

She glanced at the clock.

"The bell ought to ring soon," she sighed, and hoisted her bag onto her shoulder. "What class have you got next, Ellie?"

It was only the second day of school, so the blonde was still working on figuring out her schedule. Opening up her hand, and almost seeming to count on her fingers, she mentally ready off her schedule one finger at a time.

"...Um... oh! Math class is next fer me!" she finally chimed off after her mental quiz of her full schedule. Ellie wasn't one of those girls who couldn't do math. In fact, Math was easier for her than writing, so it was somewhat convenient her first real class of the day was something she could handle without as much effort. After answering the question, she then returned it to sender with "How 'bout you?"

Her eyes finally drifted up to the clock and found that it was indeed 1 minute until the bell was going to ring. Maybe after an answer, it would be a good idea to head back to her desk.

"Oh," nodded Tallulah, who had memorized her schedule, "so do I."

She offered Ellie a sheepish smile - she wasn't so good at this friendly thing, but this year was trying to get better at it.

"Maybe we should walk together?" she suggested.

The bell rang.

Ellie's shoulders rolled into a shrug. "Eh... I suppose. Always nice t'have someone who's awake t'talk to."

With that, she silently excused herself to sit down at her desk for a moment. It seemed their teacher had been running late, and entered the classroom just as Ellie went to sit down. With class now in "session," the two would have to wait until they were dismissed to walk to math class together. However, Ellie would keep her promise and waited for Tallulah (if she waited) to head to the next class together.
