Recently, one of my friends was caught in his bed having sex with his girlfriend by his father. The the girlfriend that his parents didn't know about, who he's been dating for over a year now. Granted, he's at the end of high school age, so it's not such a big deal having a serious girlfriend. Still, I think it's...a rather bad way to make an introduction to the girlfriend. (Trust issues aside and all.)

So, when and how do you think is best to introduce your new significant others to your parents, especially if you come from a fairly conservative background? I know it's difficult to talk to most parents about this sort of thing regardless of how open they are, but still, don't you think it's worth it? Or is this something only my socially inept friends deal with? sweatdrop

Personally, I think it's fine to wait a bit after you start dating, but if it's a fairly serious relationship, then the parents should know, even if it's going to be a bit uncomfortable for a while. Then again, my parents have been pretty nice about the dating thing, but even then, I still think something like this is important and should be talked about. Thoughts?

I think you said it quite well. Relations should be known about. If they aren't there could be trust issues rased, and parental disaproval can be a powerful force for the end of a relationship.

That's why I wish my boyfriend's parents knew about me... He plans to just randomly be like "brb, going to Ohio to see my girlfriend," one day, but that's not what I want my first impression with them to be!

I wasn't even supposed to date until I was 16, but I still told my parents about the guy I started dating at 13. They were pissed, but at least they knew. We dated for like 4 years, and my parents never did stop hating him... XD

Even though my parents don't know that Alex and I are in a relationship, they at least know who he is and seem to like him well enough, so it won't be as hard to eventually tell them that we're more than just friends... XP

I care a lot about having my parents' approval, so of course I think kids should always tell their parents about who they're dating.

I think it depends on the situation. I didn't tell my mom at all about my first boyfriend (who at the time was my best friend and my mom thought he was gay) just because I knew she'd disapprove and she didn't like me hanging out with him as just friends anyway. Actually, I keep my love life in general a secret or on the down low. My mom and what not still know virtually nothing about my fiance, but I think that's because I live so far away.

I think that you should tell your parents about any relationship, but it's not mandatory. Sometimes there are just some things that aren't their business. All it ends with in the subject of dating is your father decapitating a rat to prove his point <-- true story with a square nosed shovel.

.........
The question that bothers me, though, is:

When the hell do you tell your parents you fell in love with someone over the internet?
@.@

Talk to them on the phone a lot. My parents knew him and when I started talking to him on the phone every night it was kinda obvious.

Then again, I have very lenient parents.

My mom doesn't care so as long as he's good looking.
My dad will never approve.
He's already told me xD

I never told my parents about my 2 boyfriends I had but I'm not one for serious relationships though so this probably doesn't really apply to me.
If I did find a guy I was truly committed to, I would defiantly feed him to the lions introduce him to the family.

That's why I figured my parents would catch on. I don't usually talk on the phone much, so it's probably obvious that I at least like him more than I like most people... XD

I've never had any talk of that sort with my mother.
I'm in a serious and long-term relationship though, but I think she trusts me to make the right decisions, which I have and will continue to do.

Also, to put my opinion out there, if your friend was immature enough to hide the details about his girlfriend from his parents for so long, then I'm not sure he's capable of a 'serious' relationship.

Huh. This is a good point - perhaps he isn't; his parents aren't the type to behead squirrels or anything. (Or, in his girlfriend's case, her parents are in the process of trying to get her excommunicated.)

I guess not all parents have that much say in your significant other either.
