Mmm! Butterbeer sounds good!
  Totally!
  I'd rather have some firewhisky.

A well-known inn and a frequent haunt of Hogwarts students. It's warm and comfortable, is packed practically all the time, and is a great spot to drink butterbeer, although they also serve firewhisky, gillywater, mulled mead, red currant rum, and even cherry syrup and soda with ice and an umbrella.

Payton walked with Trista into the Three Broomsticks, the room seemed warmer and the tables were open. "How about we get the table by the window and try to play a quick game before heading back to school," he suggested while they moved over towards the table. When they reached their destination, he placed his bag on the hooks on the wall and then moved over to the other side and pulled out Trista's chair for her, "after you, madam," giving a kind bow. He normally didn't act like this, but with Trista, he didn't mind at all. Like it felt easy to do and what a gentleman should do for a lady.

Trista set her things with Payton's on one of the wall hooks, but kept her chess set under her arm. They went over to a table by the window, and Trista accepted Payton's friendly gesture, taking a seat as he pulled the chair out for her. She opened the box and set all the pieces out, making sure to be careful with them, for they were made of glass. Trista decided that she had wanted the clear glass pieces, and she aligned the pieces on her side of the board as they should be. She played around with some of the pieces as she waited for Payton to take his seat and set up his side as well.

Once Trista took her seat, Payton felt anxious to play against her. He moved over to the other side of the table and took as seat, his knees bouncing with excitement or was it nervousness. He looked across at Trista as she took out the pieces and began to place hers on the board. He took his darker pieces and began copying her, "for a moment there. I forgot where each piece go...I hope I don't forget how each piece moves," he joked at himself, feeling quite clumsy and slow in placing the pieces. "But one thing is for sure, I think you go first." He placed his last two castles on the board and then stretched out his hands in front of him, cracking his knuckles in slight intimidation. He grinned at his action and waited for Trista's move.

Trista laughed at Payton's slight jokes. She brought her left knight out to c3. She usually brought her knights out first, or moved her bishops into the playing field. she never really had a strategy except to just 'wing-it'.

Payton watched as Trista made her first move. It looked easier than he thought, as he stared at his side of the board. Not wanting to move a bigger piece, he moved his pawn to C5. "Okay...so I thought I'd start off small," he admitted and then looked around for someone to take their orders for some butterbeers.

((ooc: as a first move, how can you move your rook to C5? haha sorry. razz unless you meant pawn. i just wouldn't know how to move on that if we're playing a real game.))

Trista watched Payton make his move. When she saw him glancing around for a waiter, she let out a short yawn. "Oh my." Trista saw a woman with a notepad in her hand also glancing around at the tables. Trista raised her hand and gave a little wave towards the girl, requesting her assistance. When the woman arrived at the table, she asked what they'd like to have. Trista ordered a butterbeer for herself and asked Payton what he'd have.

ooc: I warned you ahead of time that I would lose. And I had to go online to remember the block letters and numbers.

Payton shook his head with a grin on his face as Trista called over a waitress, an act that he was trying to do but failed. After she ordered her butterbeer, he lifted his hand and said, "make that two and can we get a basket of nuts." The waitress noted their order and left, leaving them to go back to their game. "Now...which is the quickest way for me to lose?" he joked, seeing how he was still unsure at first on what type of strategy to go with. Maybe after a few rounds I'll get better, he thought while staring at his black pieces.

Trista moved her knight once again, making sure to stay out of the way of Payton's pieces. The waitress had taken their orders, and was soon back with their butterbeers and nuts. Trista thanked the woman kindly, and took a few sips from her drink. "So tell me about your family, Payton."

Payton watched carefully as Trista moved her knight. Their waitress came with their order as he grabbed a some nuts to snack on while thinking about Trista's question. "There's not much to say really. I'm an only child, my dad's a wand-less warlock and my mother's a witch with a wand. Basically, I'm a mutt from two sides of magic that shouldn't mix." His remark showing his dullness of his genealogy. He focused on her knight which stayed away from his pawn as he pulled out his other pawn in front of his castle to line up. "Sad to say really, I've formed a liking of both sides. It...how you put this, makes me more enlightened I should say."

Trista listened to Payton's story and nodded as he spoke. "I see. Both of my parents are muggles. They separated when I was just a child though." Trista turned to stare off out the window, thinking of her complicated past. She grabbed for a few nuts after Payton did, and munched them quietly as she planned her next move. She moved a pawn off to the right side of her board, keeping simple movements for the time being.

Payton some what felt sad for Trista, hearing that her parents separated. He had the same situation, but its not like he had a choice on his parents being separated. "I'm sorry about your parents. I only have my Mum, Dad died before I could even remember what he looks like. Maybe its a good thing," he said absentmindedly, looking down at the board. He dropped his nuts on the table and reached for his butterbeer. He took a gulp, not wanting to make himself feel down about his father. "I guess we do have one thing in common," he admitted and placed his glass down, "being an only child stinks." He gave off a chuckle and looked up at Trista, "ever wanted siblings?"

Trista lowered her head as Payton started talking of his father. "I'm sorry to hear that. I do have one sister though. She's younger than I am, and she lives with my mother. I usually visit them every so often, but I live with my father for the most part." Trista ate a few more nuts and took a few swigs from her mug of butterbeer.

"Oh," Payton stumbled, not knowing that Trista had a younger sister. I guess we're not a like, he corrected himself as he looked up to see Trista take a swing of her drink. "I bet its good to have a sibling, some one to talk too and such. Even your Dad..." He started to feel slightly down by the fact that Trista had a sibling and her Dad. He forced himself to grin as he grabbed the nuts on the table and shoved them into his mouth.

Payton chewed on the nuts, making his mouth even more saltier. "Well...I guess its your move before we end up staying here all night and get kicked out of the village and school over a game," he commented, wanting to change the subject into something that would take his mind off his family and hers for a while.

Trista lowered her head and stared into her lap, noticing that Payton seemed uncomfortable about the discussion. "At times," Trista agreed with Payton's statement and began to long for the chance to meet up with her sister and talk again. She reminded herself that she needed to start another letter to send back home.
Trista hadn't the excitement to be competitive in this game anymore, so she decided that she'd just make any old move. She pulled out another pawn and waited for Payton to make his next move.
