User ImageI was abandoned.

On a snowy eve a young angeni gave birth to three foals. Blood stained the pure snow and painful howls where heard in the inky blackness which was the night. As the foals where placed in there baskets it became clear that one of them was not breathing. Its eyes opened ever so slightly to reveal blank eyes. So the young one was placed in its safe haven. Then left in the snow which soon piled up. The grieving parents left with the others. However this proved to be a horrible mistake.

As the hours past and the snow kept piling the basket warmed up fast. The young body inside coughed again and again liquid coming from its mouth. A sick like texture that was thick and almost clear. Her body was still sticky from the liquids from her mother. By some miracle the foal was alive but left in the world all on her own. Without any help it would not make it through the night.

By some luck. She was saved by another angel who took the little basket in. Caring for it as if she was her own. Many weeks after this gift was given to the filly. It was time for her to meet the person who has saved her life.

The spring was in full bloom and the flowers of all different colours started to pop up everywhere in the land. The lush green grass grew long and glittered with the morning due. The sky was pained a soft blue with a few fluffy white clouds gracefully floating. The sun brightly shone and was warm against skin of every creature. Birds flying. Mice scurrying and the pitter patter of spring foals that where running about with there parents. These lands where amazing. A prefect balance where all the creatures lived in peace. That's how it looked at least. Although past this valley. There where evils that you would only believe when you stared them in the eye.

What was this place? Well it was a safe place where new mothers took care of baskets, a nice peaceful place which many came to, even if they did not communicate there numbers made it perfect to take care of the very young until they where strong enough to go home with there parents. It was well known in the lands. The Birthing Lands, it was called by many. The village was not too far and humans came to check on young ones and put them in baskets. They where a kind people.

The now stronger foal in the basket was breathing calmly coming out of her dream world and opening her black eyes. Today was going to be the day where she would leave her small cell and see the wide world she is apart of. To see the face behind the voice which she knew very well and kept close to her heart. Still too young to understand feelings and speak words. She was helpless and would need her savour for many more months before she was big enough to take care of herself. She stretched kicking the sides of her basket. All that was in her way was the lid which she gently pushed against with her nose. For one so young... it was a struggle.

She rested her head back down on the soft floor of the basket, taking a small breathe she would have to wake up some more before she greeted the morning, she needed to learn how to use her legs. She moved them slightly trying to push herself off of them to get out. When she had the hang of it. She would push at the lid again.

The mare had discovered the abandoned basket near the end of winter. It had been cold, snow had half-covered the black-rimmed and golden sanctuary, but the spirits seemed to have known well what they were doing. Though the angeni couldn't possibly understand whom might have lost such a precious thing, she watched guard and played keeper of the basket just in case a worried mother or father reappeared. Kaiya had sent her ward, Galahad, out to search and question those whom might know to whom the little foal belonged to. . . .

But alas, no one knew much of anything.

Hours turned to days and it was quite apparent that no one would come and claim the little one. Though it was quite unexpected, though she was rather surprised at the turn of events there was no way she could just leave. She thought of finding a surrogate mother for the little surprise inside, but after praying and meditating, Kaiya decided that the spirits had chosen her to care for the little one. . . If another mother was to be in this little foals life, than another would have been directed towards the basket and not the angeni.

So it was with great pride and tender care that Kaiya fully allowed the basket to become her own. She cared for it, unknowing of what lay peacefully inside; she spoke to the little one, sang it lullabyes and songs that her own parents had sung to her. Galahad cared for it too, giving Kaiya temporary reprieve should her services be called elsewhere but for now, the angel of Redemption was on a slight leave of absense; with a foal in her care, she couldn't risk harming herself by seeking out the most deadly and vicious of soquili. But those in the area whom needed a shoulder to lean on or someone to heal them were in great company.

Winter turned to spring and this day was a carbon copy of the next. The little sanctuary was bursting with new life, and both Galahad and Kaiya knew that it wouldn't be long before the little one within decided it was time to emerge. It was a great mystery on who or what lay inside. . . The angeni knew not the foals gender nor its race; but regardless, one could not say that the little one lacked in love.

Curled up protectively beside the basket, one wing half-draped over it, Kaiya's ears flicked forward as she felt movement within. Galahad had left earlier, his healing abilities being requested by a local family whose own young one had a bit of a rough and tumble beginning. She was sure he would return soon, but this little one might not wait.

Smiling, her own heart racing with both intrigue and excitement, the angel cooed encouragement. "Come along now, little one. There is much to see, to explore. . . " The angel leaned down and gentle brushed her nose against the side of the basket, allowing the little one to open the lid only when comfortable. Kaiya didn't want to rush this moment, even if she could hardly wait to dote upon and see her little son or daughter fully.

The foal took opened its black eyes and looked up once again at the rum, the skin around them was tender and soft. Her fragile body did not feel completely hers at the moment. She was still getting her footing right. However still keeled she raised her head. A nose became visible off of the edge of the basket and as she pushed more, the lid soon fell off the top. Still she laid in her cosy little bed.

First she felt the warm sun, and took her first proper breathe of fresh air. Her eyes jolted close at the light as she squinted and put her head in-between her legs to shield them. However slowly they once again started to open to look around at the world. It was full of colours but like any young foal she could not look to far. After a certain point it was just blurry. However she looked up to see a figure a large one of many colours. As she stretched her neck to get a closer look the basket tipped making the foal slide out till she was by the mares side resting against it. Hey black voids fully open and her many wings motionless against her side. They here as dead as her legs. She was still too weak to let them support her but with a few hours of encouragement she was sure to be running and playing like the best of them.

She put her head on the warm fur. Little neighing noises coming from her mouth. The mares skin soft to touch and comforting putting a smile on the little ones face. She yawned and made a cute little squeaking noise as she did so. Her eyes looking at the mares with looks of curiosity and longing she needed someone in this world every foal did. Even more so she needed a mother. Someone to love her. As this mare was her first sight out of the basket. Instinct said that she was this mother. Her face rubbed along her side. Words yet to be spoken by one so young. But her feelings for her did not need words to tell. She already loved the mare.

Kaiya found herself holding her breath as the top of the basket moved. Though the young one had a rough beginning, being abandoned in the dead of winter, the Angeni knew with certainty that things would be much better. There was always hope on the horizon, no matter how dark the night seemed. . . . Dawn came every morning without fail, such were the ways of blessings and hope. . . and whatever small one lay within the baskets embrace, Kaiya knew too that there was much hope and goodness on the way.

Sitting up straighter, duo-coloured gaze brightened as a tip of a nose could be spotted. It was pale, very pale, and already Kaiya was tickled pink with joy. Now what about the rest of the little foal. . . .and was it a colt or a filly? Thankfully, after a little more encouragement, the foal pushed off the lid of the basket, exposing the small one curled up within.

Kaiya herself was genuintely surprised at the young one within. It was . . .it was an angeni! Pure blooded or not, it made no difference to the mare, but she just couldn't believe that one of her own kin could have abandoned a basket. There had been no stains of blood or signs of battle; nothing when she'd found the snow covered basket to suggest much of anything! Oh, how the spirits knew well what they were doing!

Kaiya's features were broad as she smiled affectionately down at the little one. Dark wings and hints of gold striping her ebony locks, the little one was the most precious creature she had laid eyes upon. Oh, what a blessing in her life. . . . what a true and utter blessing!

Remembering to breathe, the angeni watched as the pale filly looked around. Her ebony gaze was most unusual, but quite striking against her coat of snow. Yes, everything about the little one was perfect, absolutely perfect and Kaiya wouldn't see it any other way. She did start slightly as the weight of the basket shifted and the little one came sliding out. Thankfully, Terentia (for that was the name she had decided upon had the little one been female) didn't seem upset or much to notice.

In fact, it only brought the little baby closer to her side. Duel wings spread and wrapped delicately and protectively around the the young one. Her daughter, her kin albeit not by blood. But who needed blood when it was the heart that mattered the most? Though she had loved before, Kaiya knew that this sort of love was irreplaceable and something one had to experience to fully understand.

"There you are, my Terentia sweet. . . " She cooed, leaning down to gently nuzzle the yawning filly. Her downy fur was soft and sweet. She had yet to rise though, and Kaiya worried that perhaps something wasn't entirely right. . . Ah, but time would tell and her love would never waver or lessen. No, it could only grow.

"Welcome to the world. . ."

Terentia's head moved back slightly as the mares huge one came down to meet her but as soon as there noses touched she felt a relief come over her. She could even say she was happy. Letting out another soft squeak she leant and nuzzled her new mommy's face closing her eyes her ears to attention. Then she started to lick her check. Tasting the oils in the mares fur. I guess all young ones learn with there mouths and Kaiya was no exception to that rule. Her black voids opened once again to see the mare.

Her head then looked out to the valley and she pulled one of her stick like legs from underneath her, her front two 'twigs' pushed upwards, she tried to bring the back to up but four legs, where two too many for the filly to handle and in the most ungraceful way she fell backwards onto her hide so she was sat much like a little puppy with her front legs straight and standing and her back ones spread in opposite directions either side of her. Her ears darted back and her eyes widened. Looking back at her legs she blinked and curled her head in wonder. Then her wings flapped a little. So many limbs.... she was not sure where she started and ended and where her mother began. Even little tasks like standing where epic for the baby.

The day was so warm it was the perfect day for her to come out of the basket, it was beautiful and the colours and noises where making the little one happy. She was curious and with everything she heard her eyes darted to meet it. Everything was so new and shiny! after spending so long in her dark home... this was a world beyond imagination.

Kaiya couldn't help but beam, her duo toned gaze softening at the sight of her beloved little filly. It still amazed her that it was what looked to be a pure angeni before her, amazed her that the spirits had entrusted Kaiya to her care. But now that they were properly introduced, now that she finally met her precious daughter, everything could and would change. Oh, yes, she would still stay devoted to her task at hand, her need to save the lost. . . .

But right now, such a thing would be temporarily displaced. Right now it was all about raising this young one and seeing her grow strong and wise; her joy was not her own any longer, it was up to Galahad and she to rear this young one until she was strong enough to find her own path, to choose her own life. She would always have a place with Kaiya, of course, but the mare also understood that life frequently called and beckoned. Just as she had chosen to dedicate her life to saving the damned, she knew that this little one, her little Terentia, would someday make choices all her own.

"Ah, my beautiful Terentia," she murmured, gaze full of affection for the ebony eyed mared. "They are something to get used to, aren't they?" She chuckled, reaching down to affectionately lip at her daughters mane while she sat, gazing in awe at the day. "But you'll soon master them, I promise." Lifting her own wing which had still been delicately held protectively above the filly, she encouraged, "Perhaps you should try again?"

Galahad would be tickled pink upon his arrival, that Kaiya was certain. Her young ward had been nothing but a studious and kind apprentice; he had also helped heal those in need and her own wounds when situations grew grim. He was, in a way, much like a son to the mare . . .even if he still thought fondly of his own family. Galahad and Terentia were the only family the angeni had, at the moment. . . . . Raiju and Shyam were still unknown, unfound, and she knew not if either might remember her. And Sirian was long since grown, living his own life.

How time had changed things. . . . But, as her ebony eyed sweet heart proved, change wasn't necessarily always for the worst.

Terentia nodded her head back and forth watching the mares mouth move however the words she was saying where not registering with her at all. They just made he chuckle happy to finally have some contact with another. Soon however her attention went back to the twiggy things connected to her. She gained a determined look before she started to move her back legs. One of her mind ones pressed against the ground her other one joining it pushing her hind into the air.

Then she looked to her front ones propping up one before the other. Soon her back straightened and the filly was stood. Shaking. However firm on her legs. She then realised she was a little stuck. She felt unbalance so would not move her legs they where stuck to the ground like no other. She looked at the world feeling a lot taller than she was when she laid on the ground. Looking through the lands she saw other foals playing and she saw other families like her own.

She looked back at her mare and by observation she thought this mare was like the others. That she was her mother. That could be possible because they looked slightly like each other. Unless she was told she would never think any different. She smiled at the mare. As if to say thank you for being there.

Kaiya observed her daughter with a soft smile. Though she had been around foals before, this was the first time she'd been able to experience the joy of a newborn. Furthermore, she had never been with a foal that was hers - certainly she hadn't given birth to Terentia but it mattered little - this filly was hers . . .a gift from the spirits and nothing would ever shake that view.

Silver and gold gaze watched patiently as the little one began to push itself to its legs. Fascinating how quickly she was learning, how she was already learning how to stand and would soon begin to walk. The moments were already slipping away and yet the little filly was only just with her. . . . "That's it," she encouraged, cooing softly. "You'll be prancing in no time," she nodded, watching as the pale filly began finally righted herself fully.

She stood there, unmoving, but it was still an accomplishment. Kaiya's head-wings fluttered in joy, as did her un-bandaged set. "That's my girl," she softly cheered, eyes sparkling and the pride in both her voice and appearance very obvious. She loved Galahad, and certainly was proud in his accomplishment. . . .but there was something ever so different. This was her daughter, and the angeni of Redemption couldn't help but feel that every moment had to be doubly cherished. Foals weren't foals for long, unfortuantely, and Kaiya didn't want to miss a thing. She especially didn't want the little one to ever doubt her endless love or care. . . .

Ever so softly, Kaiya leaned over and gently nuzzled the little filly's cheek and neck with her nose. She was quite an affectionate mare, and it wasn't often she had an excuse to cuddle or coo over something so sweet.

Terentia's little hooves stuck in the ground like little anchors, she was so unbalanced with her wings and her new legs, she knew the moment she tried to move she would fall over, everything was still so new, catching her attention. She knew she was doing something right, her mother was praising her. She smiled widely and closed her eyes enjoying it as she was nuzzled. She went back down to the ground her legs tired already, she buried her head into her mothers side, her wings flapping all over the place, almost dopey, since she did not really know what to do with them. She looked out across the field for a moment, a butterfly was on a flower nearby. She put out her head, trying to lick it. However it flew away before she got the chance, she looked at it confused, wondering where it went. How it went, what just happened.

She looked back at her mother a little clueless. Wondering why it ran away from her. Her attention span was short and was now back on her mother. She lent over her shoulder, grabbing a strand of Kaiya's hair in her mouth, not chewing just keeping it there like she was holding onto her. Her eyes looking up into hers. Her stomach a little empty, it let out a small rumble.

Kaiya watched the little filly, reminded of her long since grown son Sirian. Of course he had been older than Terentia when she'd stumbled across him and that horrid scene. . . . but he had still been young, fragile. Just like Terentia. . . Part of Kaiya wondered who on earth had left the foal in such a state, but she knew it was fate to stumble across it and save it from the frigid winter.

Perhaps they were preparing her. . . rewarding her for a job well done. Or perhaps they were telling her to pause, enjoy life and remember it wasn't all work and no play. Regardless the spirits reasons, Kaiya couldn't help but beam down at the little one as she tried to chase the butterfly. Gold and silver gaze looked up as the creature flew. "Butterfly." She stated, looking back at her daughter. Chuckling at the look of confusion she added, "You'll fly someday soon, Little One. Just like the butterfly."

Kaiya lifted one of her faded bandaged wings as Terentia buried herself against her side. She let her feathers affectionate caress the little filly before smiling as her hair was caught. Pale ears swiveled softly as she caught the sound of a hungry tummy. Hmm. Grass would have to suffice. . . "Here." Leaning forward to give her one final nuzzle, Kaiya lowered her head and picked at the green grasses, chewing and swallowing. She looked up at Terentia before picking up some tender shoots and setting them at the little ones hooves. Hopefully the ebony-eyed filly would mimic her actions. "Food."
